a) Public Sector Employees<br />

1357. The most common grounds for dismissals and suspensions alleged by<br />

public sector employees were: (i) absence from work; (ii) participation in<br />

demonstrations; and (iii) public display <strong>of</strong> opinions incompatible with <strong>the</strong><br />

internal regulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ministries involved.<br />

1358. Approximately 34% <strong>of</strong> dismissed public sector employees alleged<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y had not been subjected to investigations or o<strong>the</strong>rwise notified <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

potential dismissal prior to receiving notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir termination.<br />

1359. Of <strong>the</strong> public sector employees who were subjected to investigations,<br />

some reported having been questioned about <strong>the</strong> reasons for <strong>the</strong>ir absence,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir political affiliations, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y had participated in <strong>the</strong> demonstrations<br />

at <strong>the</strong> GCC Roundabout, which sect <strong>the</strong>y belonged to, and <strong>the</strong>ir opinions about<br />

<strong>the</strong> regime and/or high pr<strong>of</strong>ile religious or political figures. 680<br />

1360. Approximately 120 employees reported that <strong>the</strong>y were presented with<br />

photographs associating <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> demonstrations. 681 At least 95<br />
