<strong>Report</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inquiry</strong><br />

protesters near <strong>the</strong> deceased’s home. Three tear gas canisters were thrown<br />

outside <strong>the</strong> house. The deceased was in her room and <strong>the</strong> tear gas entered<br />

through <strong>the</strong> air conditioning vents. She could not move because she had a<br />

physical disability, namely paraplegia, so a relative carried her out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

room. The relative called SMC for an ambulance and was told that <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

only three ambulances and that he should call back in 20 minutes. He called<br />

back four times but was told that <strong>the</strong>re were still no ambulances available. At<br />

around 19:30, a person from SMC called and said that <strong>the</strong>re was an ambulance<br />

on <strong>the</strong> way. The ambulance arrived at about 19:50, at which point <strong>the</strong> medical<br />

staff informed <strong>the</strong> family that <strong>the</strong> deceased had passed away.<br />

Case No. 40 - Isa Ahmed Altaweel 539<br />

1059. On 31 July 2011, Isa Ahmed Altaweel was pronounced dead.<br />

1060. The <strong>Commission</strong> received information indicating that his death may<br />

have been caused by suffocation from tear gas inhalation after riot police fired<br />

tear gas in Sitra.<br />

Case No. 41 - Sayed Jawad Ahmed Hashim Marhoon 540<br />

1061. At 18:45 on 14 September 2011, Sayed Jawad Ahmed Hashim<br />

Marhoon was pronounced dead. The death certificate states that <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong><br />

death was acute chest syndrome as a consequence <strong>of</strong> sickle cell anaemia. The<br />

certificate also states that <strong>the</strong> deceased suffered from pneumonia.<br />

1062. The <strong>Commission</strong> received information that at 21:45 on 10 September<br />

2011, protests were taking place around <strong>the</strong> deceased’s house. Tear gas<br />

entered <strong>the</strong> house and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> room <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deceased. His relatives stated that<br />

<strong>the</strong> deceased began suffocating and experiencing head and chest pains. They<br />

took him to <strong>the</strong> second floor and he started shouting that he wanted to brea<strong>the</strong>.<br />

On 13 September 2011, his family called an ambulance after he was unable to<br />

brea<strong>the</strong> and was experiencing pains, and he died in <strong>the</strong> hospital <strong>the</strong> next day.<br />

Relatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deceased stated that he did not suffer from sickle cell<br />

anaemia.<br />

Case No. 42 - Jaafar Lutf Allah 541<br />

1063. On 30 September 2011, Jaafar Lutf Allah was pronounced dead.<br />

1064. The <strong>Bahrain</strong> Centre for Human Rights provided information to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Commission</strong> indicating that <strong>the</strong> deceased may have died from suffocation after<br />

inhaling tear gas fired by riot police in Abu Saiba. According to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong><br />

Centre for Human Rights, <strong>the</strong> deceased had a physical disability, namely<br />

paraplegia.<br />
