A MESSAGE FROM David Acker , FACHE
P R E S I D E N T A N D C E O
With the completion of a major addition to the EJ Noble Building in Canton,
and the opening of our new Center for Cancer Care on our main
campus in Potsdam, 2011was certainly a watershed year for our Hospital, and
for our Hospital Foundation. In support of these projects, and other initiatives
to better serve our patients, 963 donors contributed more than $923,000 in
2011, the most in our Hospital’s history.
Especially in a time of economic uncertainty, the exceptional generosity of
local individuals, business and corporate leaders, physicians, and our own
employees reminds me daily of just how fortunate we are to be serving this
community.
From Alcoa contributing $40,000 toward the geo-thermal heating and cooling
of our new Center for Cancer Care, to the Kinney Drugs Foundation pledging
$100,000 to our campaign, I have been humbled and overwhelmed by the
support from every corner of our County.
Perhaps even more signifi cant are the hundreds of individual contributions
we receive – some representing considerable sacrifi ce made by the donor, in
support of our mission.
We accept these gifts with deep appreciation, and with a commitment to
be excellent stewards of what you have entrusted to us. On behalf of each
patient - each life we save, sustain, or improve – I thank you.
SPOTLIGHT ON Dr. Howard Gold
O N C O L O G I S T A N D H E M A T O L O G I S T
Dr. Howard Gold came to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with impressive credentials.
A graduate of Brandeis University, he earned his MD at Georgetown, and
completed his Residency and a Fellowship at Stanford. He was then offered the
opportunity to do a second fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, the
largest cancer research institution in the United States. U.S. News has ranked MD
Anderson the best cancer center in the country for 3 consecutive years. This begs
an obvious question, so I ask it. “Why here? Why us?”
“I get that one a lot,” he tells me. “In urban areas, oncologists typically see patients
in several offi ces and multiple hospitals. I was spending hours in my car each day,
getting to work and traveling between sites. I wanted to be in a small town, with
just one offi ce and one hospital. I’m looking for a balance between work and the
rest of my life. I wanted close proximity to the outdoors, the stimulation of a college
environment, and easy access to metropolitan areas like Montreal, Ottawa, and
Burlington. Also, I got to build my own program here – even having a say in the
design of the new center – which would never happen at a large urban facility.”
It may not hurt that he can walk to work now. You may have spotted him, walking
his two beagles around Potsdam.
About half of Dr. Gold’s patients see him for diseases of the blood (hematologic
disorders) such as lymphoma or leukemia. The other half see him for so-called “solid
tumors,” like breast, colon, and lung cancer. Dr. Gold is Board Certifi ed in both
Hematology and Oncology. Why those specialties? “I’m fascinated by cancer,”
he tells me, “and our ability to treat is rapidly changing. Also, unlike many specialists,
cancer doctors see the same patients quite often, so we’re able to form trusting,
meaningful relationships. It can be very diffi cult work, but I do really connect with
my patients, and that’s what I fi nd most fulfi lling.”
Like most doctors, achieving the balance between work and play can be a struggle.
In fact, Dr. Gold’s patients will attest that, mostly, he works. His attentiveness is
remarkable. He often calls patients in the early evening, well after offi cial offi ce
hours, or even on weekends, to discuss their progress, or just to check in.
That’s a level of personal attention you would not likely receive at a big city hospital
– even one ranked “best” in the country.
The Linda Richards Society
Linda Richards, America’s fi rst nurse,
was born in West Potsdam in 1841.
She was one of fi ve students enrolled
in the fi rst nurse-training program at
New England Hospital for Women
and Children. They worked 16 hours
a day, and slept in the wards along
with their patients. Pay was $1 per
week, with 3 hours time off every
14 days. Linda was the only student
to complete the program, and in
1873 she received the fi rst nursing
diploma issued in the United States.
Miss Richards went on to devote her
life to serving others, as a nurse and
nursing teacher.
In her honor, our Foundation created
the Linda Richards Society, which
recognizes those who help others
through their annual gifts to our
Hospital.
The Foster and French Society
Bequests from Henry Foster and Gilbert French created our Hospital in
1920, and today bequests continue to help us move forward.
Bequests are added to our Hospital’s long-term investments, where they
help secure the future of our Hospital and the health of our community.
Your bequest or planned gift is the “last, best way” to demonstrate your
values. Please consider including the Hospital Foundation in your estate
plans. We welcome you to contact our offi ce for more information.
Ways to Give
OUTRIGHT GIFTS: Cash, check, publicly-traded stock, credit card, or
online gifts are gratefully accepted. These gifts immediately “go to work”
for the Hospital.
The Annual Fund (also called the Linda Richards Society) supports
the purchase of new equipment and the expansion of programs and
services. Unless they request to be anonymous, all members of the Linda
Richards Society are included in this annual report and on a donor list,
which changes annually, near the main entrance to the Hospital.
Memorial Gifts are a unique way you can honor the memory of a special
person. Those for whom we have received more than $100 in memorial
donations are permanently listed in a display near the main entrance to
the Hospital.
Gifts of Gratitude are a special way to say “thank you” to a physician,
nurse, or other health care provider, for taking care of you or a loved
one. We’ll be sure to let the honoree know about your thoughtful
donation!
Many companies match charitable gifts made by employees, retirees,
and directors. We encourage you to enquire whether your company will
do the same.
SPECIAL GIFTS: Gifts of $25,000 or more may be recognized by naming a
specifi c hospital room, department, or service, as appropriate.
PLANNED GIFTS: Any gift that you decide to give now, but that we do
not actually receive until some time in the future, is a “planned gift.” The
simplest to make, and by far the most common, is a bequest in your will.
If you already have a will in effect, a simple codicil may be added to
include the Hospital Foundation.
Other types of planned or deferred gifts may give you special income
and/or tax advantages. They can play a valuable role in strengthening
your own long-term fi nancial health, while enabling you to leave a lasting
legacy that would perhaps not otherwise be affordable. We would be
happy to work with you and your attorney or fi nancial advisor on a gift
from your IRA, a charitable gift annuity, trust, or gift of life insurance.
For more information on any of these ways to give, please contact the
Foundation.
SPOTLIGHT ON Dr. David Hauerstock
R A D I A T I O N O N C O L O G I S T
I
can’t help but notice the headless ceramic doctor that sits on
a high shelf above Dr. Hauerstock’s desk. “That’s Dr. Mel,” he
tells me. “He was given to me by a friend whose father, also a
physician, had it in his offi ce for years. He kind of watches over
me.”
David Hauerstock grew up in Montreal, and attended McGill
University there “forever.” He earned his Bachelor degree, Master
degree in Engineering, and his MD there, plus completing his
residency, before fi nally leaving Montreal for a fellowship at Beth
Israel in New York City. “There should be something named for
me at McGill,” he laughs, “I was there for so long.”
A great feature of the medical program at McGill is that they
rotate every student through every specialty, for at least a few
days. Dr. Hauerstock hadn’t even thought about Radiation
Oncology, but with his engineering background, it was a natural
fi t. “I’m good at the technical aspect, with the math, but I also
really like the patient contact.”
In fact, the bulk of his time, about three days per week, is spent
with his patients. The rest is reserved for the more high-tech side of
his profession: drawing up treatment plans and calibrating every
detail of the radiation therapy he’ll administer. “It’s the best of
both worlds,” he tells me.
So is Potsdam. “My wife actually spent weekends here in Potsdam
with a friend’s family when she was a teenager, so when I
mentioned a possible job opening here, she was pretty excited.
The technology and facility here are comparable to a big-city
hospital. It’s close enough for trips home to Montreal to see my
family. And I really like being in a small town. I have more time
with each of my patients.”
Both Dr. Hauerstock and “Dr. Mel” look pretty comfortable in their
new home.
SPOTLIGHT ON JUDY CHASE
H O S P I T A L B O A R D M E M B E R A N D E J N O B L E G U I L D P R E S I D E N T
To call Judy Chase a tireless volunteer for our Hospital is a bit of an
understatement. For 7 of the last 10 years, Judy has been President
of the EJ Noble Guild in Canton, including two years when she was both
President and Treasurer. She’s also been a Hospital Board member since
2003, and is currently Secretary of the Hospital Board.
“I think the Hospital is the greatest community asset we have. I’m
honored to serve. And the neat thing about a Board is that it brings
together people with different expertise and perspectives. It’s a very
dynamic group. I’ve been a dental hygienist for 34 years – although I
may not have the fi nance or management experience of some board
members – I have the community connections.”
Another understatement. It would appear that Judy Chase knows
everyone in Canton, and almost everyone in Potsdam, where she
grew up. Her husband Jerry is retired from the Postal Service, and their
children are grown, but Judy still works four days a week at Smile Care
Associates. In fact, she has to use personal time or vacation time to
attend some of the Hospital’s committee meetings and Board retreats.
Judy’s role as President of the EJ Noble Guild is also very timeconsuming.
Last year the all-volunteer group raised more than $43,000
for the Hospital, including $16,000 from their gala dinner-dance, which
benefi tted the new Center for Cancer Care. “Both of my parents had
cancer. They died, 16 years apart, in the same room on the Hospital’s
second fl oor. So although most of our Guild funds are used for projects
at the EJ Noble Building in Canton, it was really important to me that we
also contribute toward the cancer center.”
Where does she get the energy? “Well, I’m a Jazzerholic,” she laughs.
“I do Jazzercize 6 days a week. Last year a group of us from the
Guild walked a half-marathon in Ottawa. It was just so inspiring to be
surrounded by so many people who care about their health and fi tness.”
Inspiring. Kind of like how it feels to be around Judy Chase.
SPOTLIGHT ON Pam Rowe
S U R V I V O R , S U P P O R T G R O U P M E M B E R , F U N D - R A I S E R
Pam Rowe is wearing a pink-ribbon necklace that her husband gave
her on their 5th wedding anniversary. “We had been married less than
one year when I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she tells me. “So we
have a lot to celebrate.”
When it comes to breast cancer, Pam has been through it all. “I had
three different diagnostic tests done at CPH to detect the cancer –
mammography, stereotactic biopsy, and breast MRI. Then two surgeries,
two months of chemotherapy, two months of radiation therapy, and a
year of IV treatments with Herceptin. Now I take Tamoxifen, to reduce
my chance of recurrence.” Some of her care was provided at CPH, and
some at Fletcher Allen in Burlington. To say it was a long road is certainly
an understatement. “Now, with the doctors and services available at the
new Center for Cancer Care, I could have treatment here,” she tells me.
“But at the time, it required a lot of traveling.”
During the course of her treatment, Pam sought support from others with
similar experiences. The Hospital had just launched a new Breast Cancer
Support Group, and Pam and her friend Ellen were the fi rst participants.
Now, the group has about 20 members, and Pam still attends monthly.
“As I saw how everyone at CPH works together to ease the burden for
cancer patients, I wanted to help,” she tells me. “I work on the factory
fl oor at Alcoa, and they offer ‘Action Grants’ to projects involving 10 or
more employees.” So Pam rounded up her co-workers, and organized a
4-mile walk/run for breast cancer.
Now in its fourth year, with more than 100 participants, the walk has been
named in memory of Pam’s friend Ellen, who lost her cancer battle about
a year ago. “That was the fi rst member of our group to pass away,” she
tells me. “It was devastating. But you have to carry on.”
Pam does more than just “carry on.” And she runs much farther than her
own 4-miler. This fall she ran her fi rst post-cancer marathon. She fi nished
in 4 hours and 33 minutes. Something, indeed, to celebrate.
SPOTLIGHT ON Laura Fuller
R A D I A T I O N T H E R A P I S T
You’ve heard the expression that good things come in small packages?
Well, Laura Fuller proves it. She packs an inordinate share of knowledge,
humor, energy, and warmth into her less than 5-foot frame.
A Gouverneur native, Laura joined the Army after High School, served in
Germany as a supply specialist, and then as a Weapons Instructor in the Army
Reserves. Really? Yes, really. After her tour of duty, she attended classes at
JCC, but she wasn’t sure about a career path. One day she offered to drive
her uncle to a medical appointment at the Syracuse VA Hospital. She got
talking with a technologist there, who suggested that she might be well suited
to be a radiation therapist. It’s a job that involves technical skill, but also
requires a great bed-side manner. It was a perfect fi t.
“Radiation patients come for care daily, for weeks at a time,” she tells me, “so
we really get to have a relationship with each patient. And every patient is
unique, so I’m never bored.”
After three years of training, Laura worked at several radiation oncology
centers around New York State, before coming to Canton-Potsdam Hospital
six years ago. Now she’s one of two full-time radiation therapists at our new
Center for Cancer Care. “Working with the brand new linear accelerator is
exciting,” she says. “It’s top-of-the line, and we’re able to deliver radiation in
less time, with pinpoint accuracy.”
But the best thing about her job isn’t the brand new machine, or the beautiful
new facility she gets to work in. It’s the people. “My patients inspire me,” she
says. “Everyone has a story, and I feel privileged to be a part of their lives at
such a challenging time.”
Laura Fuller doesn’t just radiate her patients – she radiates compassion.
SPOTLIGHT ON Rita Gruda
S U R V I V O R A N D V O L U N T E E R
After 26 years spent working in multiple departments at Clarkson
University, Rita Gruda is certainly well-qualifi ed for her volunteer
duties at CPH. One day a week she works as a Greeter at Patient
Registration, and one day a week at our Center for Cancer Care. But
what really makes Rita shine as a volunteer is her own experience as a
cancer survivor.
“When I started working here, I asked the staff if it was okay to tell
patients and their families my own story. I think it helps give them hope,”
she tells me. “I’ve been cancer-free for seven years now, and it helps
patients to see that life does get back to normal afterwards.”
Rita received her care at our Warner Cancer Treatment Center. It was a
very special place, she tells me. “I remember at the time, everyone was
so warm and compassionate, that I actually enjoyed going there every
day. I told myself if I ever had the chance, I wanted to give something
back.”
So when Rita retired, she connected with our Volunteer Services
Department. Then the volunteer position in the Center for Cancer Care
opened up. It was a perfect fi t.
Rita’s presence at the Center is certainly reassuring to our patients. She
radiates health and fi tness, and defi nitely doesn’t look like the mother
of two grown sons, and grandmother of two more boys. “I love to
exercise,” she tells me. “I walk three miles a day outdoors or at the
Clarkson gym. It’s a good thing, because I also love to cook!” She
also likes reading, camping, and traveling with her husband, a retired
pharmacist.
“There is defi nitely life after cancer,” she says. We’re so grateful that Rita
(and more than a hundred other volunteers like her) shares a portion of
