<strong>Judy</strong> <strong>Karwacki</strong> is an international tourism consultant with nearly 30 years of industry experience. Prior to starting<br />
<strong>www</strong>.smallplanet.travel, she held senior consulting positions with Deloitte, ARA <strong>Consulting</strong> and KPMG <strong>Consulting</strong>/<br />
Bearing Point. <strong>Judy</strong> also is the co-owner of <strong>www</strong>.jubileetravel.travel, a retail travel agency, for over 25 years.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong>’s project portfolio reaches from North America to the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Africa, Asia<br />
and the Middle East. Among others, <strong>Judy</strong> has worked on projects for US Agency for International Development,<br />
World Bank, Canadian International Development Agency, Organization of American States, Inter-American<br />
Development Bank, British High Commission, Conservation International, Asian Productivity Organization, The<br />
International Ecotourism Society and the International Institute for Peace through Tourism. She sits on Sustainable<br />
Travel International’s team of technical advisors for consulting projects, the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s<br />
indigenous tourism advisory committee, and the Educational Travel Community’s responsible tourism committee.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong> also is one of the consultants for Tourism BC's Community Tourism Foundations and Experiences BC program.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong> is passionate about sustainable tourism and authentic experiential travel. Her key interest is tourism that<br />
provides destinations, communities and companies with sustainable long-term economic and social benefits while<br />
protecting in their natural and cultural heritage. She specializes in sustainable agri-, horticultural, nature/eco-, birding,<br />
community and cultural tourism. <strong>Judy</strong> is considered an international expert in indigenous tourism, and has extensive<br />
project experience in Canada and around the world. She also is an emerging destinations tourism development<br />
specialist, and worked in some of the world’s poorest countries.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong>’s expertise includes tourism strategic planning, policy development, value chain analysis, product development<br />
and packaging, market assessment, international marketing, online marketing, stakeholder consultation and<br />
sustainable tourism best practices. She combines her education and professional experience in business strategy,<br />
management, operations, leadership, marketing, communications and sustainable development to assist her clients<br />
in transforming their strategy and operations for sustainable business advantage.<br />
Among others, <strong>Judy</strong> is currently leading a project for the Jamaica Ministry of Tourism to prepare a Community<br />
Tourism Policy and Strategy for the country. She is also leading a birding tourism development project for the<br />
Sustainable Tourism Department of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. In addition, she is the team lead for a needs<br />
assessment, capacity building and training project aimed at supporting Maya, Garifuna and Creole indigenous<br />
tourism development in Belize, that is an initiative of the Government of Belize’s Sustainable Tourism Program.<br />
In recent years, <strong>Judy</strong> has worked extensively in Guyana, SA. From 2006 to 2011, she acted as the principal tourism<br />
specialist for the Guyana Sustainable Tourism Initiative, a joint project of the USAID-Guyana Trade and Investment<br />
Support (GTIS) program and Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA). The project takes a market-responsive product<br />
development, marketing and communications approach that has taken Guyana from a virtual unknown to one of the<br />
hottest destinations for other birders and nature tourists from the UK and other countries.<br />
In 2009, <strong>Judy</strong> acted as the marketing specialist for the “Community Tourism Enterprise Development in the<br />
Rupununi” project, a Conservation International project that prepared a tourism development strategy for ten<br />
indigenous communities. In 2008 and 2009, <strong>Judy</strong> was project manager for an indigenous tourism capacity building<br />
initiative funded by CIDA, which included tourism training for ten Macushi villages. During this period, she also was<br />
project manager for an initiative for the British High Commission that was aimed at promoting environmental and<br />
social good practices in ecotourism operations.<br />
In 2009 and 2010, <strong>Judy</strong> was the tourism value chain expert on an USAID-funded tourism destination development<br />
project in Palestine which focuses on faith-based and experiential tourism. In 2011, she worked with the International<br />
Institute for Peace through Tourism on initiatives in Zambia centered around the IIPT 5 th African Conference. Other<br />
international assignments in recent years have taken <strong>Judy</strong> to Brazil, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica,<br />
Grenada, Barbados, Guatemala, Japan, Thailand and Fiji. She has also participated in several multi-year projects<br />
that spanned most countries in the Caribbean region.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong> has presented at sustainable tourism conferences and workshops around the world, including the Caribbean<br />
Sustainable Tourism Conference, Caribbean Tourism Summit, International Institute for Peace through Tourism<br />
Summits and Conferences (in Thailand, Jamaica and Zambia), Adventure Travel World Summit (in Vancouver, Brazil,<br />
Quebec and Mexico), Inter-American Institute for Cooperation On Agriculture (IICA) Agrotourism events, UN<br />
International Year of Ecotourism Summit, and The International Ecotourism Society events.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong> holds Masters’ degrees in Business Administration (MBA) and Political Studies (MA), a Bachelor’s degree in<br />

� Conservation International project to develop a ‘blueprint’ for sustainable indigenous tourism<br />

� Ktunaxa Nation of Canada and North Rupununi District Development Board partnership project for<br />
purpose of achieving development results through transfer of Canadian Aboriginal tourism knowledge<br />

2007, and involved a field trip to in Guyana and community meetings to define training program detailed<br />
concept and work plan. In 2008, Phase Two program included tourism basics training workshops for 32<br />
representatives from 10 North Rupununi Macushi villages, and product development assistance for six<br />
