W hat can I say about Sussex County & the 

Sussex County Chamber of Commerce that 

hasn’t already been said? As I read past “Messages 

from the Chair” and try to compose something 

new and different it strikes me that so much of what 

has been said about Sussex County & the Sussex County 

Chamber of Commerce remains constant. As a 10+ year 

member of the chamber and 35+ year resident of Sussex 

County, I have witnessed more changes than I can remember. 

The area has grown and continues to be a wonderful 

place to live, raise a family and run a business. I know…I’ve 

done all three! 

After working & commuting out of the county for 

many years, I started my own business. Being a member of 

the chamber helped me to grow my business. From networking 

opportunities like the Business-to-Business Breakfasts 

to the fabulous Fall Business Expo, there are numerous 

opportunities to meet fellow chamber members and share ideas…and maybe even do a 

little business with them. 

Thanks to the involvement of Chamber president Tammie Horsfield, the Sussex 

County Chamber of Commerce is the Destination Marketing Organization for Sussex 

County. In addition to this magazine, a comprehensive Tourism Guide, and a visitororiented 

website, www.sussexskylands.com, a new Rails & Trails guide was recently 

published adding to the many tourism resources available to visitors and residents alike 

looking for something to do in Sussex County. 

I’d like to thank the Sussex County Board of Trustees for their support and the opportunity 

to serve as the Chairwoman of the Board.

as Performing Arts Center 

Owners Jonathan Peirce and 

Paul Larena have purchased 

The Newton Theatre at 234 

Spring Street with goals of returning 

the theatre to its original splendor 

and serving as one of Sussex 

County’s largest full-time Performing 

Arts Centers presenting 

concerts, comedy, theatre, dance 

and film. First opening its doors 

on May 15, 1924, the theatre has 

been a fixture on Newton’s Spring 

Street ever since - albeit with varying 

owners and periods of dormancy. 

The theatre’s grand opening is 

scheduled for September 9 and 

will compliment other venues 

currently operating in the county 

including the Sussex County Community 

College Performing Arts 

Center. Peirce promises an exciting 

opening night in the fall. “We want 

to open with a big bang,” he said, 

“And we will be doing that.” 

The Fall 2011 schedule will be 

announced in mid-July and will 

be posted on the Theatre’s website 

at www.TheNewtonTheatre. 

com. Tickets will be available at 

the website, via phone, or at the 

theatre box office. Peirce continued, 

“Newton is right on the edge 

of a renaissance similar to Morristown 

was a few short years ago, 

and we believe the Theatre can be 

an important component.” 

Newton Mayor Kristen Becker, 

owner of three businesses on 

Spring Street including Cheddar 

Alley, said there is a lot of interest 

in Sussex County in the kind of 

theater productions Peirce is talking 

about. “A lot of people go out 

of town for that kind of entertainment,” 

she said. “Now they can 

stay here which will help our businesses 

and eateries.” Noted Becker, 

“This could be a game changer for 

the street and town.”

The Renaissance of Downtown Newton 

Thorlabs 

New Corporate Headquarters 

in 

Downtown 

Newton 

Thorlabs, a New Jersey-based 

manufacturer and global leader in 

photonic tools and systems, celebrated 

the start of construction on its new 

corporate headquarters at the intersection 

of Sparta and Merriam Avenues with a 

groundbreaking ceremony on October 1, 

2010. Phase 1 of the construction, slated 

for completion in early 2012, will yield 

a new, three-story, 100,000 sq. ft. facility 

for the company’s manufacturing, R & D, 

and administrative offices. Future 

expansion on the site is also planned with 

the complex ultimately growing to 300,000 

square feet within 10 years. 

These few sentences, taken from a 

Thorlabs press release released the day of 

the groundbreaking, don’t relay the importance 

of that first shovel in the ground for 

this project or what a commitment from 

a company like this means to the Town of 

Newton and Sussex County. No hint of 

the years of negotiating, planning, courting 

or heartbreak is evident in those first 

words. Sounds like a romantic courtship 

doesn’t it? Well, in a way, it was. 

While Sussex County has always been 

home to Thorlabs corporate headquarters, 

a new suitor - neighboring Pennsylvania 

- was vying for its attention just as the company 

anticipated an expansion. It was up 

to state, county, local and business officials 

to work together to ensure the company 

stayed in the Sussex County rather than 

leave to take advantage of economic incentives 

offered across the Delaware River. 

The Town of Newton was a key community 

partner in Thorlabs’ redevelopment 

effort, contributing to the success of the 

project in the form of a $4M Redevelopment 

Area Bond and PILOT (Payment in 

Lieu of Taxes). This bond with Thorlabs, 

providing $4M in financing that is repaid 

over 30 years in lieu of property tax 

payments, was a bold event for a munici- 

pality, particularly given the uncertain 

economic times. 

The Federal Government’s AARA 

program helped Thorlabs secure $6.175M 

in low interest loans as part of its redevelopment 

financing structure. In addition, 

the County of Sussex allocated 100% of 

its Recovery Zone Facility Bonds to the 

Thorlabs redevelopment Project, another 

indication of the community’s desire 

to keep Thorlabs headquartered in the 

county. Lakeland Bank was also key player 

in providing funding for the project. 

“We had a very aggressive redevelopment 

team working together to make 

this project a reality,” explained Tom 

Russo, Newton’s Town Administrator 

and member of the group that spent 

“many hours, long into the night” 

discussing the project and ways to make 

it work. “Every time we thought the 

conversation was over and the deal lost,

table and we were up and running

visioning on the part of the parties 

involved to put this event together.”

Financing the Thorlabs Project. 

Mayor Kristen Becker, standing at the site of Thorlabs’ future three-story, 

100,000+ square-foot world headquarters, hinted at the effort involved 

in keeping the company on Sussex County soil, “After many years of planning, 

today we finally celebrate the much-anticipated arrival of a world-class company 

to our community.” 

The commitment to locate the new facility in Newton was also a decision 

Thorlabs founder and CEO Alex Cable undertook, fully realizing the financial 

premium associated with building such a facility in a downtown setting. The 

Thorlabs redevelopment project has required significant financial commitment 

from Thorlabs and its owner, requiring an investment upwards of $16M to make 

the facility a reality. Cable’s commitment to Newton is unique, and he looks 

forward to the company being a significant presence in Sussex County that will 

help revitalize and reenergize Newton.

Comprehensive 

Rail/Trail Guide 

The wind rustles the leaves as you 

walk the rail trail and for a minute 

you’d swear it was the sound of a long 

ago train whistle. Do the towering trees 

that grow along these miles of abandoned 

tracks hold the memory of that 

lonely sound? Or maybe it’s lodged in 

the wooden railroad ties scattered haphazardly 

in the underbrush beside the 

cinder footpath. Either way, the sound is 

soothing – a welcome salve to the hurriedness 

of our days. 

There is a vast network of these multi-use 

trails in Sussex County offering opportunities 

for walking, running, road and mountain 

biking, horseback riding, and bird 

watching. They are public access trails allowing 

residents and visitors alike to enjoy 

the beautiful, natural settings found along 

the paths. 

The Sussex County Chamber of Commerce, working 

with its Sussex County Trails Partnership Committee, 

combined the information about all of these trails into 

a comprehensive guide and map. 

Trails included on the map are 

Highlands Trail, Odgen Mine Rail 

Trail, Paulinskill Valley Rail Trail, and 

the Sussex Branch Rail Trail as well 

as municipal trails and the portion 

of the Appalachian Trail that runs 

through Sussex County. The publication 

was supported in part by 

a grant from the NJ Department 

of State, Division of Travel and 

Tourism, and Eastern Propane, 

Eastern Logistics and Landmark 

America Corporation.

In 1926, a local jeweler named Thomas Murray passed away and left 

behind $35,000 specifically for the purpose of establishing a hospital 

in Newton. A committee of caring Sussex County residents quickly 

formed, raised funds, and by 1932 Newton Memorial Hospital was 

founded. Its purpose was to provide quality healthcare without having 

to send the sick or injured on a train to hospitals as far away as Paterson.

other ways too: pursing green initiatives, healthier food choices, and energy conservation. 

Most of the new programs have been initiated with a simple goal in mind: to make Sussex County a bet- 

ter, more livable area by enhancing community health through better land use, access to healthful food 

and places to enjoy recreation, and promoting a culture of sustainability. Some of the local initiatives are 

featured in the following pages. 

Sparta On Track

parta is the first municipality in Sussex 

County to be certified as a sustainable 

community by the statewide initiative 

Sustainable Jersey. It was one of 34 towns in 

the state to be recognized for earning bronze certification 

in sustainability by the organization. 

SUSTAINABLE JERSEY is a certification program for municipalities 

in New Jersey that want to go green, save money, and 

take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. 

The program “strives for a better tomorrow one community 

at a time” and encompasses three equal, interrelated components 

of sustainability: 

Prosperity – support your local economy and use 

community resources 

Planet – practice responsible environmental 

management and conservation 

People – embrace social equity and fairness

municipal building and the Department of Public Works 

facility. Sustainable Jersey has certified 67 municipalities 

in the state since it began in early 2009. Another 251 have 

registered to start the process toward certification. While 

Sparta is the first township in Sussex County to be certified, 

a number of other municipalities have begun the application 

process including the townships of Andover, Byram, Fredon, 

Hardyston, and Wantage. The Town of Newton is registered 

with the program as is Hopatcong, Stanhope, and Sussex 

Boro. 

The Sparta Green Team is currently working to achieve 

silver certification for the township. They’ve already taken 

steps to accumulate the 350 or more points required with 

the June launch of the Sparta Farmer’s Market, an initiative 

emphasizing the connection between healthful food options, 

a healthy diet and a healthy community. Mitch Morrison, a 

founding member of the Sparta Green Team and the Farmer’s 

Market, says Sustainable Jersey has done an “incredible job of 

putting together a framework for townships to move toward 

a sustainable future.”

The Sussex County Chamber of 

Commerce held its 2nd Annual 

Lean & Green Family Fest in May. 

The event was held outdoors under 

tents on the lower athletic fields of 

Sussex County Community College. 

Newton Medical Center was the 

Exclusive Platinum sponsor for the 

event. 

More than 40 health-oriented and ecofriendly 

businesses presenting a broad 

range of products and services complemented 

the event’s theme, “Journey 

to a Healthier Community.” Attendees 

explored the latest in alternative 

energy, wellness initiatives, fitness, 

natural foods, clean technology, green 

building, renewable energy, ecotourism, 

recycling, and hybrid transportation. 

“Essentially, we encouraged participation 

by any businesses, organization or 

individual who had anything to promote 

or sell that was healthy, green, local, 

earth-friendly, carbon reducing, 

conservation-minded, reusable, recyclable, 

organic, environmental, eco-friendly, 

natural, energy-efficient, or sustainable” 

said Tammie Horsfield, Sussex County 

Chamber President. “The Chamber 

supports the health and sustainabil- 

ity of our community. We created the 

Green & Lean Family Fest to support 

the businesses and organizations 

initiating new products and services 

that will make Sussex County a better, 

more livable area by enhancing community 

health and promoting a culture of 

sustainability.” 

Numerous free health screenings were 

coordinated by Newton Medical Center 

including blood glucose, depression, 

Dermascan (sun damage/ skin cancer 

risk), stroke, sleep apnea (provided 

by NJ Healthcare), and BMI and oral 

cancer screening presented by the 

Sussex County Cancer Coalition. Sussex 

County nursing students took blood 

pressure readings. 

“Newton Medical Center was excited 

to partner with the Sussex County 

Chamber of Commerce in promoting 

a healthy community through this 

event,” said Jim Furgeson, Marketing 

Manager for the hospital. “We celebrate 

all initiatives that will help us promote a 

healthier lifestyle for the communities 

we serve while protecting our environment.”

Newest Initiative Encourages 

Healthy Schools 

in advocating for healthier eating, increased physical 

activity and healthy lifestyle knowledge, the Sussex 

County’s Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC) team 

recently recognized Sussex Wantage Regional School District 

as the local school most committed to making healthier 

choices for its students. The winner was chosen through 

a committee selection process with eleven Sussex County 

schools submitting self-nominations. 

In 2008, Sussex County was selected to become one of 

only 17 communities nationwide to be chosen for the 

Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Pioneering 

Healthier Communities (PHC) initiative. PHC is a community 

leadership strategy to facilitate active living and healthier 

eating through policy and environmental changes. Through 

this initiative, the Sussex County YMCA served as the 

convener and brought together the county’s strongest 

leaders in areas of healthcare, government, business, 

education and community service, and channeled their 

focus on policy and environment changes in places where 

our community lives, works and plays. 

Their efforts have led to opportunities for increased physical 

activity and healthy living to prevent chronic disease for all 

county residents. Highlights of the team’s work to make 

Sussex County a healthier place: 

♥ Developing a community action plan and progress reports, 

which have all been endorsed by the YMCA of the USA. 

♥ Sussex County Community College instituting a 

healthy campus policy. 

♥ County freeholders passed a resolution endorsing 

the work of the PHC team, encouraging all to support 

their efforts. 

♥ Both the New Jersey Department of Transportation 

and the North Jersey Transportation Plan Authority 

adopted a Complete Street Policy. Complete Streets 

refers to a balanced approach to transportation 

solutions that takes into account the needs of all 

roadway users: pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users 

and motorists. 

♥ Developed an innovative program called the Y First 

Program. Once limited to writing prescriptions for 

medications to treat patients for conditions such as 

high blood pressure and cholesterol, local physicians 

can now send their patients to the Y for a free eight 

week program including wellness coaching and exercise 

to influence behavior change towards a healthier 

lifestyle. Since the program’s inception late in 2009, 

physicians have referred approximately 300 patients 

to the Y with a prescription for exercise. 

♥ The PHC team partnered with the Sussex County 

Chamber of Commerce to actively support businesses 

in developing worksite wellness programs. The team 

developed a Healthiest Worksite Award that was 

presented at the Chamber of Commerce’s Quality 

in Business, Quality in Living Awards Dinner. 

The PHC team’s ultimate goal? 

To make Sussex County the healthiest county in New Jersey. 

Sussex Wantage 

School District 

Healthiest 

The Sussex Wantage School District’s demonstrated 

best practices in promoting healthier lifestyles has 

made them Sussex County’s school most committed to 

making healthier choices for its students. The award from 

Sussex County’s Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC) 

team was presented to the school at the YMCA’s Healthy 

Kids Day in April. Along with a banner to display at their 

school, a $1,000 grant from Newton Memorial Hospital 

was awarded to support the district’s continued healthy 

efforts. 

In their nomination application the school district 

described a variety of programming related to healthy 

eating and physical activity including a number of 

programs targeted towards the less athletically gifted. 

Available to students is a Recess Walk/Run initiative, the 

“Winter Olympics” and Jumping Jacks & Jills, an enrichment 

program held for one week in the summer where 

students work together in cooperative challenges and 

organized games for all skill levels. 

The Sussex Wantage School District application introduced 

TEAM Nutrition, a project dedicated to healthy eating 

activities. Team initiatives included the Chef for a Day 

project and vending machines that supply water and 

juice versus soda. There’s discussion of creating gardens 

for growing food at the school too. A strong health 

education curriculum for all grade levels supports 

programs conducted in and out of the classroom promoting 

healthier lifestyles early in school development.

SHERIFF IN TOWN 

Sheriff Mike 

Strada was elected and began a three-year 

term as Sussex County Sheriff on January 1st, 2011 – the first new 

Sheriff the county has had in more than twenty years. Strada is a veteran of 

Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm and served in both Iraq and Saudi 

Arabia. He holds an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice and worked in law enforcement 

before assuming the Sheriff’s post earlier this year. 

Responsible for operating the county jail and providing courthouse 

security, as well as emergency management and Homeland Security 

functions, Strada is the 70th sheriff in an office that was established 

in 1753, making it the first established law enforcement entity in the 

county, according to the sheriff office’s web site. 

Sussex County magazine sat down 

with the “new sheriff in town” 

Michael Strada. 

Sussex County Magazine: There were a 

number of individuals running for Sheriff in the last 

election. What set you apart as a candidate? 

Sheriff Michael Strada: I ran on two core principals; 

keeping Sussex County safe and doing so as efficiently 

as possible. 

Sussex County Magazine: You stated safety is a priority. 

What do you mean by doing so “efficiently?” 

Sheriff Michael Strada: I run the Sheriff’s Office as 

if it was a big business. I currently have 135 full time 

employees and 25 part-time employees with a budget 

of 15 million dollars. This year I have been able to trim 

approximately 650,000 dollars off the operating budget 

without laying off any employees. 

Sussex County Magazine: What services have been 

enhanced? 

Sheriff Michael Strada: I doubled the inmate work 

program enabling inmates to go out into the community 

and assist cash strapped towns in Sussex County. The 

inmates are painting municipal buildings 

and schools, firehouses, cleaning 

up trash and washing windows. 

Sussex County Magazine: Any other services 

the Sheriff’s department is providing? 

Sheriff Michael Strada: We now provide prisoner 

transportation for local municipalities. This saves towns 

thousands of dollars in police overtime because we now 

transport the prisoners from our correctional facility to 

municipal courts throughout the county. 

Sussex County Magazine: What challenges is your 

department facing? 

Sheriff Michael Strada: The biggest challenge we 

face is inmate healthcare which can cost up to a million 

dollars a year. By law we have to provide inmates with 

free health and dental care. I am looking to start 

bracelet monitoring in Sussex County. I would like to 

see the low level non-violent offenders with medical 

issues monitored on an electronic bracelet. By utilizing 

bracelet technology we do not have to absorb the 

medical costs. With the judge’s approval, I hope to 

have this program up and running for next year. By 

implementing this program we could save hundreds 

of thousands of tax dollars.

THE HISTORY OF 

MOUNTAIN CREEK 

The ski resort known as Mountain Creek began in the mid 1960’s. Called Great Gorge and located 

on the southern part of Hamburg Mountain, its 1,000+ ft. vertical drop made it the only major 

ski area within an hour of New York City and an instant success. 

Competitors soon followed, developing a ski area on the north side of the same mountain known 

as Vernon Valley Ski Area. Undercapitalized, it eventually landed in the hands of a group of Wall 

Street investors headed by Henry Neuwirth and Gene Mulvihill. 

The two ski areas competed for a few years but eventually recognized the advantages of 

joint operations and merged. Trails were connected making it possible to travel from one 

base area to the other -several miles away - and returning via a series of ski lifts and trails. 

At the same time Action Park was born - a unique water park built into the terrain 

on the side of the mountain at Vernon Valley, complete with waterslides and recreational 

attractions like racing speedboats, alpine slides and race cars. With its own 

marching band, professionally directed Broadway shows, festivals and an array of 

unique attractions, Action Park was immensely popular drawing crowds of nearly 

20,000 people on its busiest days. Today the site is home to Mountain Creek Waterpark 

offering 22 different rides, slides and attractions. 

In May of 2010 Mountain Creek Acquisition, LLC, headed by the same investors 

that control Crystal Springs, acquired all of the stock of Mountain Creek 

Resort, Inc., the owner of the ski area, related facilities and improvements 

and the associated real estate development. Previous owner Intrawest 

had invested over $100 million to improve the ski area adding new modern 

detachable high-speed ski lifts, the world’s largest, most elaborate 

snowmaking system and one of the best terrain parks in the country. 

Andrew Mulvihill, the newly installed President of Mountain Creek, 

said in a statement: “The combination of Crystal Springs’ world class 

golf courses and amenities, with the year-round recreational opportunities 

of Mountain Creek, will provide an unsurpassed leisure 

experience within an hour’s drive of Manhattan. The new owners of 

Mountain Creek are committed to improving the facility and making 

it a resort destination second to none.”

the ownership of Canadian-based resort conglomerate 

Intrawest for the past dozen years, during which 

time the resort invested significant capital. Upgrades

the new Mountain Creek Lodge 

will house and service all the functions of 

arriving, renting, dining and relaxing in 

a masterfully designed manner that follows

to The Appalachian in its scale and 

Adirondack-modern exterior style. It 

included major snowmaking improvements and

New Harmonies

As I go walking that freedom highway . . . 

This land was made for you and me. We 

hear Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your 

Land and we hum, whistle or sing along. 

Most of us know it because it’s an American song. It’s part 

of our roots, roots that make American the birthplace of 

more music than any place on earth. Clicking through the 

music channels is a sound jaunt through pop, hip-hop, jazz, 

blues, rock, county, and the lists goes. We swing low with 

our chariots, hammer with John Henry, and blow in the 

wind. The roots of American music are deep and wide. Old 

Protestant hymns from Britain and storied rhythms from 

Africa were altered, blended, revised, and reborn into folk, 

county, blues, and gospel. Add an Eastern European polka 

and a Native American chant, and you have quite a mix. 

The New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music 

exhibit is bringing this diverse and broad range of music 

to cities and towns across the United States. The traveling 

exhibit is part of the Museum on Main Street project, a 

partnership of the Smithsonian Institution, the Federation 

of State Humanities Councils, and state humanities 

councils nationwide. In New Jersey, six sites were chosen by 

the New Jersey Council for the Humanities to host the exhibition. 

All New Jersey venues will present the exhibition 

sometime this year, and the Sussex County Arts and Heritage 

Council in Newton, the only site north of Trenton, is 

the presenter from September 19 through 

October 30. 

Coinciding with the spirit of New Harmonies, 

Photos with a Beat, a show of 

photographs with musical themes, will be 

shown at the Arts Council from September 

3 to October 1, 2011, and All Woman 

Show, also a music themed exhibit that 

features artwork in all mediums created by 

women, will be on display form October 

8 to November 12, 2011. For the duration 

of the exhibit, concerts, shows, performances, 

and other music related events are 

scheduled throughout Sussex County. 

The New Harmonies exhibit consists of 

seven interactive listening stations where 

visitors to hear and learn about America’s 

musical past and present, from the Bay 

Psalm Book of 1610 to a Polish accordionist 

from 1998. 

Using the listening module The First 

Sounds: Sacred Songs, visitors hear and 

learn about gospel, spiritual, sacred music, 

and African and Native American music. 

From The Hills, Hollows And Plains: 

County Music has bluegrass, mountain, 

cowboy, western swing, the southern 

sound, and banjo. Can’t Be Satisfied: 

The Blues explores rural and urban blues, 

the harmonica, and even spoons. Other 

Sound, Other Songs features Zydeco, Teja-

no, Cajun, Klezmer, polkas and accordion. 

Odetta, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan are part 

of Come Gather Round People: The Roots 

Revival, which centers on music from the 

1960s, and includes powwow music and 

the Chicago blues. Woody Guthrie, Pete 

Seeger, and Aunt Molly Jackson can be 

heard in Stand Up and Sing Out, music 

that rallied people and sung for freedom. 

Originally composed of two main groups, 

British Isles and African slaves, American 

roots music evolved first into folk ballads, 

country, blues and gospel. Immigrants 

added their own musical traditions and 

jazz, bluegrass, rhythm and blues, rock and 

roll, rap evolved. As the process goes on 

and Middle East, Asian and South American 

are added who knows. It’s America. 

Other upcoming events at the Arts 

Council are Art is a Gift, a holiday exhibit 

and sale of small, affordable, original art, 

which runs from November 19, 2011 to 

January 07, 2012 and the annual Skylands 

Regional Juried Art Exhibit, which is held 

in the spring.
