Message from the MD
Dear Colleagues
This issue of SKD is one of the two that
will be published this year. We have
reduced the frequency of this magazine
from quarterly to half yearly for the
simple reason that we want to cut down
on our costs in these times of global
recession and local economic downturn.
This is not the only step taken by your
management to keep our ship on even
keel and weather the present storm.
A series of steps have been taken to
protect the interests of the company
and the employees so that together we
can sail through these uncharted waters
to attain success and maintain sustainability.
You will be happy to know that
the management has led from the front
and voluntarily given up many facilities
or curtailed existing facilities so that
together we can overcome present
difficulties.
The main aim of the top leadership is to
ensure that maximum jobs are saved
and the heartbreaking specter of
parting from colleagues is avoided. We
are perhaps among the few companies
that are still hiring for acutely required
manpower but all this can only continue
if the world and Pakistan can surmount
present difficulties within a reasonable

period of time.
I am confident that with our portfolio of
products, that represent environment
friendly technologies, we have much to
offer to Pakistan and achieve success
while at the same time remaining
committed to our ethical and moral
principles.
As you all know we have launched a
campaign, “Cash is King” and already
have the first two winners whose
pictures you will find in this issue. This
demonstrates the importance your
management attaches to positive cash
flow.
We believe that this is the life line of the
company. Profit in figures makes pretty
good reading but it cannot pay your
salaries or the suppliers bills. Cash in
hand is what really counts. Speaking of
suppliers, I must point out that our
suppliers are very lucky that they are
well looked after by our concerned
managers and paid promptly.
I would request not only our customers
but also our managers to treat Siemens
in the same manner and ensure prompt
payment for our supplies so that this
chain of prompt payments to our
suppliers and salaries to our staff can
continue, unhindered.
Another important aspect of success is
constant self evaluation and indeed
learning from the evaluation of others.
Criticism at the work place must be
welcomed not resented, and treated as
free advice that can help improve your
performance.
Successful people welcome criticism
and indeed challenge those around
them to find shortcomings in their
performance so they can perform even
better.
Only if there is no desire to improve will
there be resentment against healthy
criticism. I strongly think that mutual
evaluation, leading to improvements in
processes and attitudes can revolutionize
an organization.
A positive attitude towards criticism also
eliminates infighting which serves as a
cancer to destroy organizations.
As this publication also reaches policy
makers in the highest echelons of the
government I would like to point out
that the engineering industry in any
country forms the backbone of the
economy. Globally approx 60% of trade
is of engineering based goods and
services.
An engineering industry encouraged
could be the engine for turning around
the economy of the country and
become the driving force for the future
success of Pakistan. On the other hand
an overtaxed engineering industry can
slow down our growth and lead to
further more serious recession in the
country.
I am sure that the present government,
that reflects the aspiration of the
people, will act firmly to boost the
engineering industry and give it the due
importance it deserves.
In the end I again request all employees
to put their heads down and work
relentlessly to tide over these difficult
times.
Over the years I have seen the amazing
results produced by all of you and I am
sure that these difficult times will only
strengthen your resolve to reach even
greater heights, and like the true
fighters you have always been, win this
one with flying colors.
