Automatic Toxicity Test System for Drinking Water
Researchers from Siemens Corporate Technology have developed
a fully automatic system
to test drinking water for the
presence of toxic substances.
The lab demonstration model
can analyze water samples at
a rate of one every 15 minutes
and is sensitive to over 100
toxins, including insecticides
and chemical weapons. At the
heart of the system is a
biosensor that measures the
activity of special enzymes.
The signal is transmitted electrically, which means that the
system is fast, highly sensitive, and durable. Initial talks are
now being held to discuss the possibility of developing the
demonstration model into a marketable product.
At present, fish are often
used to monitor the quality
of drinking water. If behave
in unusual ways, the water is
subject to a thorough check.
Around once a week, lab
workers also carry out a
detailed analysis for toxins.
The Siemens system, by
contrast, continually removes
a sample from the pipe and
tests it for harmful substances. No trained employees are
required.
Siemens’ new Protegra CS systems deliver Type II
water for healthcare and laboratory markets
Siemens Water Technologies
introduces the Protegra CS
water system that combines
reverse osmosis (RO) and
continuous electrode ionization
(CEDI) technologies to
produce consistent ASTM Type
II pure water quality from a
soft water source. Available in
four models with flow rates
from 120 to 750 liters per
hour, the Protegra CS system can supply pure water to an
entire building or to one laboratory with multiple points of use.
The Protegra CS system combines RO and CEDI technologies to
produce consistent high quality water. Protegra CS is ideally

suited for higher flow applications, such as feeding autoclaves,
glassware washers and environmental
chambers.

The Protegra CS system uses high-capacity RO membrane, and
is designed to remove dissolved
solids from the feed water source
while sending minimal reject
water to drain.
The system also uses a single
CEDI module that continually
regenerates, eliminating the use
of costly chemicals. The
maintenance-free CEDI module consists of ion exchange resins
and electricity to remove ions from water, resulting in a
purified water quality of up to 17 megohm-cm

sensors
which
can
monitor
the
climate in
buildings
and make it comfortable. The scientists develop sensors not
only for measuring light and temperature but also for detecting
odors and measuring different gases, such as CO2.
The goal of the Siemens researchers is to develop sensors
which act as the sensory organs of buildings and pass on their
information to a building management system. Thanks to the
tiny watchmen, the management system knows, for example,
where aggressive substances have leaked or simply where the
lights are to be switched off or the windows opened due to too
high a CO2 level in the air.
