Abu National Oil Company (ADNOC) is a pioneering company in assuming its responsibilities towards the
society and fulfilling its obligation towards protection of the environment and supporting social activities and
initiatives. This fact is manifested in the large number of activities and events covering all fields of life sponsored
and supported by ADNOC in recognition of its social responsibility to support the society. Within this context
ADNOC largely contributes in supporting and serving the society, protecting the environment, preserving the
natural resources and providing means which ensure sustainable development of the society according to an
approach which constitutes an integral part of a national plan for the realization of comprehensive sustainable
development which forms part of its social responsibility
The corporate responsibility (CR) has merged as a moral initiative which finds its strength, acceptance and
power in its voluntary and proactive nature and from this perspective efforts, initiatives and events carried out
by ADNOC has extended and diversified reflecting the different environments surrounding ADNOC numerous
sites and multiple business operations. The CR is not of a rigid nature as it enjoys dynamic and realistic
properties capable of continuous development to hasty cope with the overall interest and social, economic and
political transformations.
For that end ADNOC Group as a pioneering company and a main source of income for the Emirate of Abu
Dhabi is annually supporting social, educational, cultural and sport activities of the society as part of its efforts
and initiatives to bring about the social, economic and cultural development for the UAE community.
Within the context of its social responsibility ADNOC Group takes part this ear in Liwa Date Festival 2011 in its
7th edition by extending the golden sponsorship for this heritage gathering annually being organized to honor
this national product as an important annual event and a distinguished tourist and heritage celebration and
bolsters its competitiveness both regionally and globally and contributes in rairiang awareness of date quality
among the locals in introducing this important product which occupies a deep seated and a sizable part in the
UAE human memory
The Festival largely contributes to Liwa’s business boom, with a significant increase in trade and tourism with
records showing that large number of visitors, including foreign tourists, flocked to the event placing the area
in the international tourism map.
ADNOC’s participation in Liwa Festival stands as evidence of the importance which ADNOC Group accredits to
the Western Region in recognition of its civliztaional and cultural heritage and natural resources as the lifeline
of the economy of UAE and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the foundation upon which the UAE development
and progress is based through out the history. ADNOC sponsorship of this important gathering also aims to
support and promote Abu Dhabi agricultural development plan and encourage farmers to pay more care
for agriculture through adoption of the best practices in agriculture and introduction of the best irrigation
methods for the proper utilization of the saline waters available in UAE.
ADNOC’s participation in the this heritage festival aims to achieve a numerous and multidimensional goals in
that it meant to continue the approach of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God bless his soul,
in paying due concern to agriculture particularly palm date plantation. He stressed that that festival embodies
the cohesion between concerns of both our wise leadership and the UAE citizens in celebrating and horning
UAE genuine heritage and pass on the inherited culture from generation to generation. It further comes as a

application of the best international practices of health, safety and environment in all sites of its business
operations and allocation of available recourses for serving the Region and providing more job opportunities,
training and development for the citizens of the Western Region

Deputy Supreme Commander of
the UAE Armed Forces underlined
the importance of investments in
agriculture and adoption of the best
practices to advance the quality of
products, commending the unlimited
support of the President His Highness
Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan
to efforts to sustain the nation’s
agricultural sector.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed has
urged for encouraging the agricultural
private sector and scientific research
centers and foundations to take part
in developing the nation’s agriculture
to bolster its competitiveness both
regionally and globally and contribute
to the diversification of the national
economy.
While touring the stand of Abu Dhabi
National Oil Company (ADNOC) in
the Festival Sheikh Mohammed Bin
Zayed, got acquainted with ADNOC’s
experience in producing dates from
oilfields. Examining the date produced
by Zarku Island, Sheikh Mohammed
Bin Zayed praised the quality and
large size of the dates produced
in the island. Tasting Zarku Island
products of Alanbara date category,
Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on
the methods adopted to reach this
distinguished size commending the
awareness and due concern paid by the
date cultivators and their competition
to produce dates of excellent quality,
large size and good taste. He also
hailed the farmers, initiative to adopt
the modern agricultural methods.

Liwa Date Festival 2011 organized
by Abu Dhabi Cultural and Heritage
Authority (ADACH)under the
patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansour
Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister of Presidential
Affairs during the period from 12 to
21 July in Liwa City in Al Gharbia (the
Western Region) in the Emirate of Abu
Dhabi and. ADNOC sponsorship of
this important event comes within its
pioneering role in developing social,
economic and cultural sector of the
society.

made a visit to ADNOC’s stand in
Liwa Festival 2011. Sheikh Hamdan
praised the big success and remarkable
development of Liwa Festival in its
7th edition. He expressed satisfaction
over the large number of participation
pointing out this wide participation
reflects the importance of the palm tree
in the history, heritage and customs of
UAE.
Sheikh Hamdan was briefed on Zarku
island experience in producing date and
cultivating fruitful trees commending
the high quality and unique size Zarku

Al Nahyan and Abu Dhabi Crown

Al Nahyan to extend all support to
the agriculture sector particularly the

document UAE oil history.

Sheikh Mansour hailed the quality of
Zarku island’s date products particularly
the large size and good taste. He was
briefed on the agricultural methods
adopted to produce date of large size
and good quality commending efforts
being exerted by Zarku Island, ZADCO
and ADNOC Group in leveraging
the national agriculture product
and supporting the farming sector,
especially the palms farms, with latest
technologies particularly the best
irrigation methods to increase the area
cultivated with palm tree.
Meanwhile ADNOC’s stand also
received during the festival H.E. Sheikh
Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan
Minster of Higher Education and
Scientific Research. H.E. got acquainted
with ADNOC experience in agricultural
production from some oilfields. H.E
examined the date products of Zarku
Island and toured the photo galley
organized by ADNOC Group inside the
gallery.
ADNOC keenness to extend the golden
sponsorship to Liwa Festival comes in
recognition of the uniqueness of this
event as a distinguished heritage and
tourism event which contributes in
promoting competition and raising
awareness of the good quality of
the UAE dates. It also comes in
acknowledgment of the role of this
gathering in promoting the position
of this national product as a deep
seated element in the UAE heritage.
The heritage elements of this Festival
included a number of events which
promote the national heritage beside
the main event of the festival the
Mezainat Al Rutab “half-ripe dates
Competition”.

achieving social, economic and cultural

forums discussion session which aimed

folklore beside a children special tents

more than 70,000 visitors, including
foreign tourists, flocked to the event.

ADNOC Stand Attracts Large Official and
Non Official Attention
Liwa Date Festival included this year
over 50 pavilions representing a
number of government departments
and private companies, including one
pavilion for ADNOC’s and its Group of
Companies, the official sponsor of the
festival. ADNOC’s pavilion attracted
visitors from different nationalities
and age groups. Visitors expressed
their admiration for the company’s
initiatives and continuous efforts in the
development of the Western Region
(Al Gharbia).
ADNOC stand in Liwa Date Festival
2011 included a gallery displaying
a collection of old photos recording
important periods of the history of the
region particularly the early times of oil
exploration and production. ADNOC’s
pavilion also showcased samples of
dates produced from a number of oil
fields a matter which attracted large
number of visitors who had expressed
admiration for the quality and size of
ADNOC date products.
Zarku the Island of Dates Palms
and Oil
ADNOC participation in the festival
included dates produced from Zarku
Island of ZADCO characterized by
their high quality and large size. A
number of dates competitions were
organized during the festival under
several categories. Among more than
20 date categories’ produced from
the island including Allulu, Al Khallas,
Al Dabbas, Boumaan, Kunaizi, and
Al Nukhbah beside other categories
ADNOC participated in one of these
“Mzainat Al Rutab” with “Anbara”
and “Sultana” wining the first prize
for the largest date fruit for 2011 with
Alanbara for the fourth year in raw .
Commenting on ADNOC winning of
this prize Mr. Abdel Hafez Moussa Al
Hamadi the agricultural engineer in
ZADCO told ADNOC News that only

a few number of people know that
Zarku island has more than 1750 palm
date trees in addition to more than
3000 lemon and mango trees and
some bananas and vast green areas
accounting for 25% of the total area
of the island. He added that ZADCO
management guided by ADNOC Group
HSE policy is committed to environment
protection through increasing of the
green areas using modern method
of irrigation and cultivation of more
palm date trees as this tree occupies a
significant part of the Emirati genuine
heritage and the UAE human memory.
He went on to say that some visitors
have expressed concern over the
large size of Zarku dates products
affirming that all types of fodders used
to fertilize the palm trees are organic
fodder manufactured from agricultural
leftovers and restaurants wastes
mixed according to certain ratios and
fermented through special techniques.
He further stated that Zarku Island has
realized self-satisfaction in fertilizers
processed locally from non-harmful
waste and the surplus is being sent to
Arzanah and Das Island as fodder for
the tress and green areas in the two
islands.
This large size of the date fruit could
be achieved through lowering of the
number of twigs in each Etheg (the
part which carries the dates) a method
largely known among the local farmers
and maintaining of regular agricultural
services particularly irrigation and
fertilization of the palm tree in the due
time he added.
It is to be recalled that Zarku
Island encompasses oil fields and
accommodation facilities for ZADCO
employees. The management of the
island has established a department for
environment protection which is also
responsible for increasing the green
areas and the number of trees in the
island. Due to the sincere efforts being
exerted by ZADCO management the
green areas and the number of trees
are witnessing steadily increase. The
palm date tress has jumped from 695
trees in 2002 to reach over 1750 trees
in 2011.
ADNOC’s Pavilion attracts official
and popular attention
According to the organizing committee
the 10 day festival saw over 70.000

visitors who also came to see Liwa
oasis in the Western Region of Abu
Dhabi, to enjoy discovering the world
of ripe date and hearing stories about
the tree that bears the noblest fruits
ADNOC pavilion received a large
number of visitors from the
ambassadors and diplomats accredited
in UAE including the Ambassador of
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of the
United Kingdom, the Ambassador of
Switzerland, the Ambassador of the
Republic of Sudan and the Ambassador
of the Republic of Senegal.
While visiting ADNOC pavilion
accompanied by his family HE Dominic
Jeremy Her Majesty Ambassador to
UAE expressed delight for visiting
ADNOC’s stand praising the photos
gallery and ADNOC products of high
quality dates.
Speaking to ADNOC News Magazine
HM Ambassador expressed
congratulations for H.E Abdulla Nasser
al Suwaidi on his appointment as
Director General of ADNOC wishing
ADNOC Group more success and great
achievements. The British top diplomat
hailed the distinguished relations
between UAE and the United Kingdom
in all aspects particularly in the field
of oil exploration and production. He
further reviewed the role of the British
companies in oil production in the
GCC countries.
While touring the pavilion, ADNOC
officials briefed the visiting Ambassador
on the unique collection of photos
displayed for the first time in gallery
which documents important period in
the history of UAE oil exploration and
production during the 1960’s. He also
got acquainted with ADNOC efforts
and initiatives to develop and increase
the green areas in its oilfields.

participation and continuous support
to all events and activities organized in
the western region reviewing the active

Liwa Date Festival is not but a fruitful
result and crowning of collaboration

The Photos Gallery a Bridge
between the Past and the Present
The photos gallery organized inside
ADNOC pavilion attracted a large
number of visitors from different
nationalities and age groups. The
unique collection of old photos which
where displayed for the first time had
provided a good opportunity for the
young generation to get acquainted
with the life features in the past
beside the difficulties and harsh living
conditions which faced oil production
and exploration in the western region
and recorded important periods of the
history of the region. As for the older
generations who had lived these days
the photos were a chance to recall the
lovely and hard memories they had
experienced.
Among the large numbers of visitors
attracted by the photo gallery ADNOC
news Magazine spoke to Mr. Basheer
Mubarak Al Mehairbi from Habshan
area in Liwa. Mr. Al Mehairbi was
among the first generation who
worked in the oil and gas sector
in the region. Commenting on the
old photos displayed inside ADNOC
pavilion, Al Mehairbi said: “I worked in
the oil sector since 1951 when I joined
Abu Dhabi Petroleum Company which
was then operating in Al Hamra area;
thereafter I was transferred to Jabel Al
Dhana and from there to Treef in the
excavations and pipes section. Our job
duties included loading, replacing and
repairing of oil pipes when they suffer
damage as result of the high humidity
and rust”.
Al Mehairbi went on to say that the
period between the mid of 1950s up
the mid of the 1960s had witnessed
the first steps on the great march
for the building of the modern state
of UAE. As for the oil companies
operating in the Western region this
ten years period was the period which
crowned the intensive and hard work
which extended for more than twenty

years starting from the discovery of the
first oil well in Bab and then Bu Hasa
oilfields and ending by the export of
the first shipment loaded with UAE oil
in 1963.
He praised the great contribution
made bye ADNOC to the Western
region particularly in the education and
training of the UAE nationals adding
that these continuations and generous
support were further augmented when
ADNOC assumed supervision over the
oil exploration and production in UAE.
Al Mehairbi enumerated some
examples for the difficulties which
were facing the Bedouin life
particularly the rare water resources
and the lack of health care facilities. As
part of its efforts to alleviate the hard
living conditions facing the Bedouin
tribes of the western region ADNOC
extended through ADCO its health
care services to cover also the locals
and non ADNOC employees in the
remote desert areas he said. He added
that this move has become sine then a
deep rooted practice of ADNOC and its
Group of Companies.
The old generation had worked under
very dangerous situations because at
that time there were no safety and
protection equipment similar to those
used nowadays citing some deadly
accidents for which he was an eye
witness.
The sand dunes around Liwa constituted
great obstacle hindering the work of oil
exploration teams because it was very
difficult to reach the drilling sites or to
send exploration teams he said. These
difficulties and other harsh conditions
were surmounted by the strong
determining of the old generation in
addition to the introduction of the
helicopter in 1959 which eased our job
to a very large extend.
ADNOC News Magazine also
interviewed Mr. Salem Al Amiri,
a UAE national from the Western
Region who witnessed the beginning

had studied his primary education
in a school affiliated to Abu Dhabi

Al Amiri praised ADNOC’s participation
in Liwa Date Festival pointing out that
the Western region places great hopes
in ADNOC due to its great potentialities
stating that although we highly
appreciate ADNOC contributions in
all events and activities organized in
the Western region, “however we
are also looking forward for a greater
role of ADNOC in contributing to the
development of the region. He further
called on ADNOC to increase the
number of ADNOC refilling stations
and to expand the range of services
offered through these stations”.
On the remarks he made to ADNOC
News Magazine, Mr. Mohamed
Helal Bin Treebesh Al Mansouri who
also witnessed the beginning of oil
exploration and production, recalled
the hard living conditions which the
area had faced in the past. He said that
due to the limited number of water
resources the majority of the people
in the Western region used to travel
for long distances in search for water.
He went to say that when the oil
companies started to their operating
for oil exploration and production
things began to improve because
the oil company (currently GASCO)
provided the Bedouin and the locals
in generals with water and health care
services and as the desert life was very
hard they started to settle around the
sites of the oil companies.
I remember when I was 15 years old,
the supplies and provisions of the oil
companies were brought through
land and sea and airplanes as well he
said. He added that the oil companies
had made a runway in Treef for the
airplanes landing carrying the mail
and other supplies, there was a weekly

modern, in addition to other inventions
during which ADNOC has maintained
continuous present through the
general contribution in cash and in kind
all have made Liwa Date Festival a great
distinguished event anticipated by all.

ADNOC participates in the Scholarships Exhibition 2011
The Scholarship Department in Abu
Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)
participated in the First Scholarships
Exhibition 2011 on May 27 and lasted
for two days.
The participation came in coordination
with the National Recruitment
Committee in ADNOC, the Petroleum
Institute (PI) and delegations from
ADNATCO & NGSCO.
H.E. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak
Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher
Education and Scientific Research, made
a visit to the ADNOC Stand where he
was received by Mr. Faisal Al Ali, Head
of ADNOC Scholarship Department,
who gave a brief on ADNOC’s role in
supporting qualified national caliber.
Al Ali gave an outline of the programs
and services presented by ADNOC, its
Group of Companies and its academic
institutions. H.E. Sheikh Nahyan Bin
Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister
of Higher Education and Scientific
Research, expressed his gratitude and
impression of what ADNOC does on
human capital and on partnerships
with the society. His excellency hailed
the diversification of the company’s
academic institutions.
Meanwhile, Al Ali expressed his
pleasure for ADNOC’s participation
in the exhibition that is the first of
its kind in the UAE. He hailed the
representative working team. “We
are pleased of our participation in this
exhibition to give the public an idea
of our services that support Academia
and qualified national caliber,” Al
Ali told ADNOC News. “This type of
exhibitions represents an opportunity
for networking and interacting with
the latest developments on what is
been presented by others and what we
do present as well.”
The exhibition was a graduation
project for female students. A
variety of participants represented
Etihad Airways, the American and
Indonesian Embassies in Abu Dhabi,
Abu Dhabi Police, Dubai Aluminum
(Dubal) and several federal ministries
such as Ministry of Higher Education
and Scientific Research, Ministry of
Finance, Ministry of Culture, Youth &
Community Development. Emirates
Nuclear Energy Corporation, Abu
Dhabi University, Khalifa University
New York University Abu Dhabi and
Al Khawarizmi International College
in Abu Dhabi were among the
participants.

New Agreement to Boost our Crude Exports to China
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company
(ADNOC) and China National
Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed
head of terms agreement for further
cooperation on oil sale. Under the
new agreement, ADNOC will provide
additional quantities of crude oil to
CNPC from the Emirate with effect
from 2014.
The new agreement will be effective
for 20 years renewable on annual
basis according to the quantity and
quality of the crude oil agreed upon
between the two parties.
The new agreement was signed by H.E.
Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi Director
General of Abu Dhabi National Oil
Company (ADNOC) and H.E. Jiang
Jiemin Chairman of the Board of
Directors of China National Petroleum
Corporation (CNPC). The signing
ceremony was also attended by Mr.
Sultan A. AL Mehairi Marketing and
Refining Director, Mr. Rashed Saud
Al Shamsi Petrochemicals Director
at ADNOC and a number of senior
officials at ADNOC and the Chinese
Company.
According to the agreement ADNOC
will increase the annual export of
crude oil previously agreed on to 200
thousands barrel per day inclusive of
the current quantities.
The agreement comes within efforts
to promote the commercial relations
between the two countries. It also
aims at increasing the UAE exports to
China the second largest oil consumer
in the world after the USA and an
important oil exports market.
The United Arab Emirates and the
People’s Republic of China have
showed keenness to develop bilateral
relations which was established before
more than twenty five years. Within
this context, the UAE has opened in
2010 its first consulate in Shanghai to

promote tourism and commercial and
economic exchange with China. In
addition the UAE has made an active
participation in Shanghai International

According to senior Chinese
officials, the UAE is China’s best
trade partner in the Middle East
with more prospects of mutual
cooperation in key sectors, fuelled
by the huge interest of companies,
and businessmen from both sides to
foster more trade relations for the
interest of the two countries. The two
countries are looking forward to boost
mutual investment ties in economic
commercial and technical sectors. A
number of Chinese companies have
expressed desire to enter the dynamic
and capital- attracting UAE market.
A joint committee has been established
between the two courtiers to develop
bilateral relations through common
coordination. The Committee
is working for encouraging and
motivating companies and investors
in both sides to take part in the
exhibitions organized in UAE and
China and to enter in investment
partnership for the mutual interest.
The Sino-UAE bilateral relations
are organized by a number of joint
agreements on economic, commercial,
tourism and technical aspects. . The
commercial relations between UAE
and China have witnesses in recent
years steadily progress making the
UAE China’s second GCC partner and
the largest market for the Chinese
exports.
There are a 3000 Chinese companies
operating in the UAE in different
sectors such as real estate,
construction, trade, services, and
tourism in addition to nearly 200
thousands Chinese nationals in UAE.

GSAD Celebrates 2nd Batch Graduation
The Glenelg School of Abu Dhabi GSAD marked in June
the graduation of the second batch of its students in a
ceremony organized at Al Jahili Hall of Armed Forces
Officers Hotel and Club in Abu Dhabi. The ceremony
was attended by ADNOC Group senior management,
top officials from Abu Dhabi Educational Council besides
members of the GSAD administrative, teaching staff and a
number of students’ guardians.
Following the entrance of the 34 graduates, Mr.
Mohammed S. Al Qubaisi Chairman of the GSAD Board
of Trustees and ADNOC HR & Administration Director
addressed the ceremony congratulating the graduates
on this great achievement and hailing the great support
and encouragement of the UAE wise leadership to the
educational institutions at all levels. Al Qubaisi recalled in
his speech the words of the Founding Father of the UAE
the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sulatn Al Nayhan may Allah
rest his soul in peace that “The real asset of any nation
is the development of its people” praising this far sighted
vision and calling on the students to commit themselves to
education and learning
The graduation of the second group of students from
GSAD proves that all the administrative and educational
challenges are surmountable for the sake of realization of
our honorable goals for education and development of our
people, Al Qubaisi stressed. He further thanked the senior
management of ADNOC, the founder and administration
of the Glenleg Country School in Maryland, USA, Abu
Dhabi Educational Council for collaboration of efforts and
the unlimited support extended by them pointi8ng out to
the sincere efforts being exerted by the GSAD faculty and
administration.
He said that the great challenge which lies ahead is the
expansion and extension of the Glenelg School throughout
the Emirate of Abu Dhabi pointing out that the GSAD has
made great strides in this regard. The GSAD is expanding
into the (Western region) with a new campus in Ruwais
this last year and is planning to open another campus in
Madinat Zayed in September of this year and Gyathi the
beginning the 2012-2013 school-year and is also looking
forward to the inauguration of a new campus in Al Ain,
he stated.
Al Qubaisi extended sincere congratulations to all graduates
calling on them to strive to develop a love for continuous
learning and education as the sole means for development
and prosperity for themselves and their nations wishing

On her part Mrs. Rashida Nachef GSAD Headmaster hailed
in her speech the great support extended by ADNOC Group
pointing out that the GSAD is adopting a plan which takes
into account the speedy developments being witnessed in
all scientific fields. She stressed that the GSAD pays great
attention to the training of the teaching staff through the
active participation in scientific and educational seminar to
upgrade the educational and learning process at the school.
The ceremony also included speeches from representatives
of the graduates in which they expressed their delight and
proud for this great achievement which they have made
through GSAD. They extended thanks and appreciations to
the GSAD teaching and administrate staff and their parents
stressing their commitment to continue their education to
the highest levels in recognition to the GSAD which led
them to the path of the brighter future.
It is to be recalled that Glenelg School of Abu Dhabi
(GSAD) was established in 2008 by Abu Dhabi National Oil

ADNOC HSE Awards; a Unified
Goal through a Multilateral Visions

Since its inception ADNOC has
showed continuous commitment to
strike a balance between realization
of the main objectives of its business
activities and the possible impacts of
these activities on the community and
the environment through application
of a number of measures to limit or
mitigate the negative consequences.
For that end ADNOC has unified
all guidelines of community
and environment in a common
mechanism which targets realization
of social and economic development
and environment protection. These
themes which are jointly known
as sustainable development the
integration of these guidelines
ADNOC has developed overtime a
distinguished management system for
the health, safety and environment
aspects. The HSE management system
takes into considerations all issue
which might have an impact on HSE
aspects. The management system has
a mechanism which provides the most
updated information on HSE aspects
and uses modern technological
systems to monitor ADNOC Group
business activities.
ADNOC adopts a proactive approach
as regards the application of the HSE
management system with an average
of 89% in application of the system in
all the Group companies depending
on the self assessment. This approach
has made safety a priority for all
employees of the Group.
In addition ADNOC business policy
pays considerable attention to the
health and safety of all employees
and environment protection in
conformity with the local, federal and
international laws and regulations.
Environment protection represents
an essential value which ADNOC is
actively working for promotion in
the Group Companies and the local
communities in which the Group is
operating business activities. In order
to ensure protection of environment
ADNOC organizes a number of
activities and adopts a number of
initiatives which become an integral
part of ADNOC’s daily works.
Taking into account the winning
projects of ADNOC HSE awards we
will find that these projects cover
almost all aspects of HSE without
disregarding or ignoring single

aspect in a bid to realize the overall
goals of the awards which seek to
ensure human health and safety and
environment safeguarding. The fields
or the categories of ADNOC HSE
awards resemble a pyramid the top of
which represents the wining projects
in terms of their diversification
and concentration while the base
represents the foundation upon
which the pyramid is established form
different elements. These elements
which seemingly look interdependent
are in fact correlated covering
all aspects of HSE. Therefore the
winning projects are diversified and
comprehensive to cover and reflect
ADNOC’s numerous and diversified
activities and initiatives in the HSE fields
which ranges from waste recycling,
mangrove plantation and public parks
and coasts cleaning campaigns. The
wining projects serve a fundamental
strategy adopted by ADNOC which
encourage innovation in technology
and scientific research aiming at
reducing the environmental impact
of ADNOC oil and gas operations.
The goal of that strategy is achieved
through monitoring of harmful
emissions to the atmosphere, crude
oil desulfurization, shifting to sources
of renewable energy, oil production
without flaring, oil treatment, fumes
free gas flaring an adoption of a
number of technological innovation
of multiple usages in oil and gas
sector.
ADNOC has an internal awards system
known as the Annual HSE Awards. The
purpose of the awards is to recognize
outstanding accomplishments, enable
knowledge sharing pertaining to best
practice, and foster an atmosphere
of friendly competition amongst the
ADNOC Companies.
The Annual HSE Awards system
was created in 1997 and has since
evolved remarkably. Submissions
were accepted then under one
category, HSE Performance, only.
Today the system has expanded
to include six categories: HSE
Performance, Environment, Health,
Safety, Sustainability and Innovation.
Submissions are evaluated by an
independent judging panel and then
by the ADNOC CEO and Directors. The
awards are presented in a ceremony
that takes place every May.
In addition to the six award categories,
the following awards were also
presented in 2010:

Mr. Ali Rashed Al Jarwan, Chief
Executive Officer of ADMA-OPCO,
was declared HSE Champion for his
visible efforts and active commitment
to HSE matters.
Innovation
ADCO won the first place with and
entry titled ‘Electromagnetic Surface-
Controlled Sub-Surface Safety
Valve: An Immediate Solution to
Secure ADCO Wells with Damaged
Control Lines’. ADCO utilized the
electromagnetic waves technology
in a first of its kind pilot project in
the Middle East to replace physical
control lines. Two “Control Line Free
Electromagnetic” Subsurface Safety

Valves (SSSVs) were installed at
dual completion well. The pilot was
successful and eliminated the need for
work-over or shutdown and minimized
HSE risk. The implementation of this
technology in 87 problematic wells
will save AED 385 million, over 75
days of well downtime, 3.4 rig years
and huge operating costs.
The runner-up of this category
was ADMA-OPCO with an entry
‘Keeping the Oil in the Pipeline’.
ADMA - Subsea Team introduced and
deployed an innovative subsea repair
technique that utilises mechanical
connectors and flanged spool pieces
to quickly repair damaged / ruptured
subsea pipelines and immediately
return them back into service, with
the added benefit of reducing the
duration of the oil spill. The technique
has replaced the old method,
which relied on a technology called
“Hyperbaric Welding Techniques”,
that was excessively costly and took
over two months to mobilize and
complete a repair. The new technique
can be mobilized within the first 24hrs
of a subsea incident and repairs can
be completed in days using ADMA inhouse
resources.
Environment
The first place was secured by
Borouge with an entry ‘Borouge
-II Cracker Successful Start Up with
Environmental Friendly Nitrogen
Cool down’. Borouge and Linde
engineering jointly implemented
an innovative and well-researched
approach that uses nitrogen to
cool down the Borouge-II ethane
cracker in order to reduce the high
anticipated flaring during the start up
and subsequent stabilization phase
of the plant. The approach applied
key learning’s from the previously
successful Borouge-I flare reduction
initiative. The implementation of
this approach resulted in a flaring
reduction of 30,000 tonnes of
hydrocarbon and an overall saving of
AED 60 million.
ESNAAD claimed the second place
with an entry ‘Abu Dhabi Offshore
Vessels “Go Green”’. ESNAAD is
currently upgrading its existing
fleet, through which it is proactively
implementing the high standards of
Clean Notation with Green Passport/
IHM. ESNAAD also has plans to
purchase only Clean Design vessels
going forward. In doing so, ESNAAD
is going beyond minimum industry
requirements to ensure that its ships
utilise highly recyclable materials in the
construction process where possible,
generate less pollution and smaller
overall environmental impacts during
their operation, and can be recycled
in such a way that does not pose
unnecessary risks to the environment
when they become obsolete.
Health Category
The first place went to ADMA-
OPCO with an entry ‘New Methods to
Beat the Heat’. Management of heat
stress is one of the main challenges
faced due to the extreme weather
conditions during the summer.
ADMA-OPCO HSE & QA team
proactively prepared a cohesive heat
management plan to ensure zero first
aid and medical treatment cases arise
due to heat stress. The plan included
several approaches such as developing
ADNOC News July 2011

HSE guidelines for the control of heat
stress, developing pre-job heat stress
management checklists, developing
a Heat Index Calculator and linking
the findings with the Permit to Work
(PTW) System, conducting training
and refresher courses throughout
the summer season and adopting
robust and coordinated awareness
programmes.
ADNATCO & NGSCO won the second
position for the health category with
an entry submitted under the title
‘Ergo Port: Your Ergonomic Port of
Call’. Ergo-Port is a comprehensive
ergonomics management programme
that that has been built on the
principles of proactiveness and
empowerment at four progressive
levels: education, identification,
prevention and management. The
program has been designed in-house
and launched as an interactive online
educational tool for the purpose of
promoting self-help and problem
solving for both office staff and
offshore sea staff, and for preventing
and managing discomfort, pain and
injury.
Safety
ZADCO was declared winner of the
first place of this category with and
entry ‘Personnel Tracking System for
Enhancing Employee Safety in Upper
Zakum Site’. The applied Personnel
Tracking System automatically detects
and provides counts of personnel in
each of predefined zones within the
site without the need for manual
head counting. Being able to produce
instantaneous counts is particularly
advantageous for locating personnel
working in danger zones, where time
is crucial for saving lives and avoiding
rescue teams’ exposure in the event
an emergency evacuation process
is required. The system has played a
major role in enhancing the safety of
the personnel at the Upper Zakum
site.
ZADCO continued to dominate this
category when they also secured the
second place with a project titled
‘High Precision Monitoring of Crude
Oil Storage Tanks at Zirku Island’. An
in-house software application was
developed and implemented for the
crude oil floating roof tanks (capacity
of 1 million barrels) in Zirku Island,
to provide high precision monitoring
and allow for improvements
across several safety features. The
application achieves this by precisely
detecting any minor or major leaks in
the tanks and, in doing so, allowing
for a timely intervention that avoids
the escalation of hazards which may
result in damage to assets and the
environment.
HSE Performance
The first place for the HSE
performance went to ADMA-OPCO
for its project submitted under the
title ‘Communicating HSE through
Automated E-messaging’. The
automated e-messaging tool is
an effective, high return, low cost
method of raising HSE awareness

and improving HSE culture among
the workforce. By attaching a wellplaced,
subject-specific message
as footer on all outgoing emails,
the company is maximizing the use
of a communication tool which is
widespread, well-read and, above all,
free. A new message is sent every day
which makes the recipient more aware
and involved with the current focus
of HSE, and encourages behavioural
changes across the organization.
TOTAL ABK secured the second
position for the HSE performance
with an entry titled ‘Up in the Air:
Helicopter Flare Tip Replacement’.
“Up in the Air” describes the helicopter
approach TOTAL ABK has used to
replace its main flare tips, instead of
the conventional heavy load crane
barge methodology. The benefits of
using the helicopter approach over
the conventional one are manifold,
and include a reduction in exposure
hours (123 hours versus 2,880 hours),
reduced down time (two field days
versus three weeks), reduced change
of weather delays, and up to 7 times
less CO2 emissions. The improvement
in HSE performance presented by the
helicopter approach also resulted in a
cost saving as it proved to be a third
of that for the crane barge approach.
Sustainability
An entry jointly submitted by Borouge
& ADNOC-Distribution secured the
first place of this category for the
two companies. The joint entry
was titled ‘Working in Partnership-
Sustainable Waste Recycling’.
ADNOC-Distribution and Borouge
worked collaboratively to initiate
and implement a consumer waste
collection and management program,
in line with the general direction
of the Abu Dhabi Government, at
service stations across Abu Dhabi. In
addition to pursuing environmental
benefits, the aims of the program
were to promote public awareness
for waste recycling, maximise the
lifetime of usable materials and
promote ADNOC-Distribution and
Borouge as environmentally conscious
companies.
ADGAS was the runner up for the
sustainability category of ADNOC HSE
Awards with an entry ‘ADGAS-HSE
Merits of OAG1 Project: Looking at
the Future of Abu Dhabi’s Offshore
Oil and Gas Business’. A hot oil system
was incorporated in the design of
the offshore associated gas (OAG)
plant at Das Island in consideration
that heat integration leads to no
fuel gas burning being required
for process heating purposes. This
approach provided the benefits of
reducing thermal pollution, which
was decreased by recovering 54
MMBTU/hr from the exhaust gases
out of the gas turbine stacks, and
reducing carbon footprint, which was
reduced by 134 tonnes/day. The latter
is equivalent to burning 2 million
standard cubic feet per day of fuel
gas, saving costs of AED 11 million/
year.

In what is considered a land mark achievement, Abu Dhabi
Refinery Division (ADRD) had been accredited the ISO
9001:2008 Quality Management System Certification by
M/s TUV, Nord, becoming the first division in Takreer to
obtain such a recognition.
The accreditation was the outcome a detailed project,
involving gap analysis, document development, system
implementation and auditing. The audits were conducted
through internal auditors, trained and certified under the
ISO 9001 system, as well as auditors from the accredited
certifying body, leading to the award of ISO Certificate.
The project involved a lot of preparations in addition to
the alignment of procedures, work instructions, calibration
methodologies and reporting formats at ADRD with ISO
9001:2008 standards and their implementation as per the
refinery Quality Management System.
All the departments at ADRD were individually subjected to
audit by the certification agency, M/s TUV Nord. The audit
results were further reviewed by the agency’s head offices
in Germany, as a pre-requisite for certification. In addition,
a series of awareness and internal auditors training and
certification were also carried out to establish a robust
culture of Quality consciousness among ADRD staff of
different levels.
The obtained certification will require annual surveillance
audit by the certification body to ensure that the quality
management system procedures, work instructions,
calibration requirements, reporting & recording formats are
being adhered to and constantly improved.
The refinery has successfully set up the foundations for
performance excellence. ADRD’s future plan focuses on
improving the overall system efficiency by using ISO 9004
tools and techniques. The refinery is also considering
implementing ISO 14001 Environment Management
System (EMS) and the OHSAS 18000 (Occupational Health
& Safety System) with the ultimate aspiration to be eligible
to apply for Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award.

ATI Goodbyes Dr. Khaled Zaki(ATI Physician)
ADNOC Technical Institute (ATI)
organized at its campus in Al
Shawamekh, a brief farewell gathering
for Dr. Khaled Zaki (ATI clinic doctor)
to bid him farewell and thank him for
his loyalty and good service at the ATI
clinic. The gathering was attended by
Mr. Omar Al Hamed ATI Manager,
section heads, unit coordinators and
ATI faculties and staff members.
Mr. Al Hamed said that the ATI would
miss a dear colleague who, over a
short period of time, had been able
to win the trust of many people at
the institute due to his dedication,
loyalty and professionalism. He had
also been able to win the trust of
the students in particular not just as
a medical doctor but also as mentor
and adviser Al Hamed said
Al Hamed also thanked Dr. Khaled
for drawing the attention of the
management to the importance of
strictly adhering to the rule that no
students shall be enrolled at ATI until
they are declared medically fit in line
with ADNOC policy; not to mention
those caring moments when Dr.
Khaled would accompany critical
patients to the hospital because he
wanted to make sure that they receive
the best medical attention on the way
to hospital. He further commended
Dr. Khaled‘s constructive ideas for
improvement of medical service at
the ATI

Khaled and his contribution to ATI
and wished him all the best in his
future endeavors.

Takreer Research Centre: A Vision to Develop
National Refining Capabilities Realized
Takreer Research Centre (TRC) is the
first of its kind research entity in the
country that specializes in developing
refining business, technology transfer
and human resources development.
TRC was established in collaboration
with Japan Cooperation Centre,
Petroleum (JCCP). In 2005, the latter
commenced a feasibility study on the
possibility of establishing a research
center at TAKREER. TRC was built in
cooperation with Idemitsu Kosan Co.,
Ltd.
The project aims to transfer Idemitsu
Kosan’s abundant experience
and technologies relating to the
operation of research centers to TRC,
by providing support in designing
equipment/apparatus, formulating a
comprehensive project framework in
terms of the organization’s functions,
management, technologies and
personnel development.
TRC is a state-of-the-art establishment
that opts to become a centre
of excellence. It has 30 staff of
researchers, engineers, technicians and
pilot operators and is well equipped
with 15 laboratories, a pilot plant hall,
utility rooms, gas bunker, auditorium,
conference and training rooms.
To shed more light on the newly
established Centre, Takreer News
Magazine had an interview with Dr.
Abdelhakim Koudil, TRC Manager.
The Centre aims at making refining
business more profitable by
troubleshooting refinery operations,
improving refining technology and
conducting research on catalysts, said
Dr. Koudil.
“We conduct studies to better the
capacity of the refineries and enhance
the production processes. The Centre
is well reinforced with analytical and
pilot testing equipments to carry
out long-term research. We target
diversification of products”, he said.
He said the Centre also focuses on
training UAE national developees on

asic requirements of research and
exposing them to an environment
where they can learn more about
research techniques.
About the three phases of the
project, Dr. Koudil explained: “We
have finalized phase I which is the
set up phase. We are now in phase
II. In this stage we are conducting
studies on different ongoing projects
at the refineries. Specifically, we are
preparing to test the catalyst for the
Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC)
unit of the Ruwais Expansion Project.
He said the Centre is building process
simulation models for the existing
units at the refineries to help in
troubleshooting and support efforts
to increase the capacities at the
refineries. “We aim at increasing the
profitability of these units through
pilot plant testing and process
modeling and simulation” he added.
“The Centre will develop catalyst
research in order to enhance their
efficiency. We will prepare catalysts
at laboratory scale and test them in
the existing pilot plants. If they proved
to be good compared to the existing
catalysts we will start, in collaboration
with catalyst manufacturers to carry
out commercial production for
catalysts” revealed Dr. Koudil.
Elaborating on phase III, he said in this
stage TRC will install ‘Engine Bench’
testing to upgrade the quality of fuels
produced internally.
“We will use some fuels or blends of
fuels produced internally to assess their
efficiency. We will conduct research
on selected blends and consequently
recommend to the refineries to tune
their refining operations in order to
produce quality fuels or blends” said
Dr. Koudil.
He said in the long run the Centre
will avail of the ‘Engine Bench’ test
in cooperating with other local
industries like car manufacturers with
the objective of enhancing national
industry.

Al Muhairy’s comments came during

Gas Sub Committees’ holding their
annual workshop at the Petroleum
Institute on May 17.
Under the theme ‘We collaborate to
innovate Solutions for Our Challenges
by Creating New Knowledge’, the
workshop objectives were to identify
the added value, benefits and lessons
learned from the current R & D
projects and their contribution to the
Oil & Gas industry. Capturing the
audience valuable feedback in that
regard was another major objective.
The two-day workshop witnessed
the attendance of Mr. Abdulla S. Al
Minhali, Chairman of the Gas Sub
Committee and Senior Vice President
(Technical) at Abu Dhabi Gas Industries
Ltd. (GASCO), Dr. Ismail Tag, PI Senior
Vice President and Provost and Dr.

at the PI. Around 286 guests
attended the workshop including

Group Risk Management Division
organizes a Seminar on Risk Engineering
ADNOC Shared Services Directorate’s
(SSD) Group Risk Management
Division (GRMD), jointly with Marsh
(UK), organised a seminar on “Risk
Engineering” for the ADNOC Group
of Companies as part of the ongoing
Insurance and Risk Management
Consultancy agreement. This seminar
was held at Sheikh Khalifa Energy
Complex (SKEC) from 14th to 16th
June 2011 and it was attended by more
than forty nominated professionals
from ADNOC and Group Companies.
The objective of this seminar was to
share best practices and tools used
in evaluating and managing some of
the key-industrial risk areas together
with Insurance issues related to
Construction, Marine and Liabilities.
Following topics were discussed by
various subject matter experts: Transfer
from Construction to Operational
Insurance, LASTFIRE, Atmospheric
Storage Tanks, Marine Hull & Machinery
Insurance, third Party Liabilities, Business
Continuity Planning, Permit to Work
and use of SLAM.
The seminar kicked-off with a
presentation by Mr. Ian Roy and Mr.
Gaurav Bhatnagar (Marsh) on the
transfer of risk from Construction to
Operational Insurance. Insurers view
Testing & Commissioning phase of
any project with the highest risk.
Operational Insurers are reluctant
to accept a risk that has not been
fully tested and commissioned. It
is, therefore, important to correctly
follow various certification processes
(Mechanical completion and Ready
For Start UP), maintaining accurate
‘punch lists’. The audience recognised
that there are ‘grey areas’ that could
lead to debate on whether the risk
was ‘operational’ or still under the
CAR (Construction All Risk) policy.
Mr. Niall Ramsden of M/s Resource
Protection International (RPI), gave
a presentation on the LASTFIRE
(Large Atmospheric Storage Tank
Fire) project, which is steered
by a consortium of major Oil &
Petrochemical companies, including
Takreer, ZADCO and ADCO since early
1990s to review the risks associated
with large diameter (> 40m) floating
roof storage tanks and develop the
best industry practice to mitigate
these risks. Through a series of videos,
he presented the latest research into
crude oil boil-over and fires in internal
floating roof tanks along with the use
of a variety of fire fighting techniques.
The project is currently investigating
vapour concentrations inside the roof
spaces of internal floating roof tanks
and potential unsafe conditions. The
latest project findings & reports could
be obtained through the project
coordinators of the participating
ADNOC Group Companies.
The concluding session of Day-1
was given by Mr. Ian Roy (Marsh),
who complemented the previous
session with information such as:
most multiple tank fires are caused
by overfilling, insufficient protective
devices, or lax operating / maintenance
arrangements. A copy of Marsh’s
position paper on “Atmospheric
Storage Tanks” has been distributed,

which defines the standards based on
experience and practice from around
the world, including guidance from
established bodies (e.g. API, Energy
Institute, NFPA, BS EN).
Mr. Alan Cross (Marsh, London)
opened Day-2 by presenting the
insurance cover on Marine Hull
and Machinery under the Institute
Time Clauses 1/10/83, which is the
widely accepted form for vessels.
The speaker gave some historical
background as to the origination of
the wording and differences between
these clauses and other forms from
leading insurance markets in Europe
and the USA. The risk of ‘piracy’
was supported by historical and
geographical data, which highlighted
both the increase in frequency of
attacks and the escalating financial
demands of the perpetrators.
This presentation was followed by
an overview of The Protection and
Indemnity associations (commonly
known as P&I Clubs), which has
13 members who provide cover on
most of the world’s tonnage. The
speaker provided an overview of the
cover, injury to crew, 1/4th collision
liability, removal of wreck, and
seepage and pollution. A key section
focused on the agreed international
conventions and protocols in respect
of indemnifications and limitations
which determine the amounts
payable.
Mr. Richard Wyatt (Marsh, London)
concluded Day-2 with a presentation
on the risk of ‘Liability to Third
Parties’. Specific examples of large
onshore losses were given to illustrate
that the impact can greatly exceed
the amount of insurance procured
if the circumstances are such that
there is wide and varied damage.
Two examples that stand out are
‘Buncefield’ in the UK and La Mede
refinery in France, both of which
caused significant loss to property
adjacent to the facilities, loss of life,
and loss of income and revenue to
surrounding businesses.
Day-3 opened with the presentation
by Mr. Ian Henderson (Marsh, Dubai)
on Business Continuity Management
(BCM). The key drivers of BCM are
reputational risk and maintaining
the supply chain. This is becoming
critically important when the business
is very interdependent and integrated.
While highlighting the process of risk
identification and planning for a robust
BCM Plan, Ian presented an example
of energy loss in Saudi Arabia, which
was successfully mitigated through
the implementation of a robust BCM
program.
The topic for the next session was
‘Permit to Work (PTW)’, which
was presented by Mr. Ian Roy. He
gave examples of simple failures in
the PTW system leading to serious
consequences (e.g. Piper alpha,
Phillips – Pasadena, Mont Belvieu).
Illustrations of typical permit
requirements and recommendations
were given together with examples
of the need to have support
documentation. Various pitfalls of
PTW, including organisational issues,
and the need for a robust auditing
procedure were highlighted.
Day-3 concluded with the presentation
on SLAM (Sedgewick Loss Assessment
Model) by Mr. Ian Roy. SLAM is
Marsh’s computerised tool for EML
(Estimated Maximum Loss), which
uses a methodology based upon
the impact of hydrocarbon fire and
explosion in congested areas, with
subsequent impact on assets located
in the facility. This tool takes into
account plot dimensions, layout,
level of congestion, values at risk, the
amount of Hydrocarbon inventory,
product type, temperature & pressure,
etc. While producing concentric circles
of over-pressure zones superimposed
on the plot plan, the model computes
the EML value. A comparison of results
from other models (e.g. IOI, Blue
Book and ExTool) was also presented.
Volunteers from the audience had
the opportunity to practice using this
model with sample data.
This seminar was well received by all
the participants, who were also asked
to suggest topics for similar future
seminars. ADNOC-GRMD would
continue organising similar seminars
in the future to disseminate and
reinforce relevant knowledge about
the risk and insurance management
among the ADNOC Group.

Arzanah wins First Prize in Waste Recycling
The Petroleum Institute won the first place in the ‘Recycling
of Printer Toner Cartridges’ category in the prize-giving
ceremony organized by Emirates Environmental Group
(EEG) in the Conference Center of Dubai Knowledge
Village. The PI was presented with a certificate and a prize
of an all-purpose printer. The ceremony was organized to
commemorate World Environment Day and honor all those
who had contributed towards EEG’s Waste Management
and Recycling Campaigns
A major WISE Program recycling initiative was launched
in 2010, involving collecting for future recycling all spent
toner cartridges used by the entire Petroleum Institute.
A total of 2,091 spent printer toner cartridges had been
contributed by the Petroleum Institute and the spent toner
cartridges were donated to Emirates Environmental Group
(EEG), as part of their nationwide campaign.
The event commenced with a welcome speech by Mrs.
Habiba Al Marashi, EEG Chairperson during which she
thanked all the sponsors, volunteers and supporters for
their contributions and assistance in achieving EEG’s
goals and mission of helping to protect the environment
an “Art from Waste” Exhibition and was followed by an
award ceremony.,. Awards were made for recycling in the
following categories: batteries, mobile phones, tetrapak,
printer toner cartridges, glass, plastic, paper and cans.
This initiative was so successful that it has since been
extended to include ADNOC and its operating companies,
including ADMA- OPCO and ADNATCO & NGSCO, who
have participated in this scheme.

PI hosts Party for its Alumni
The Petroleum Institute (PI) organized a dinner party for
its alumni with the attendance of more than 300 guests
June 15.
Mr. Abdul Munim Al Kindy, CEO of Abu Dhabi Company
for Onshore Oil Operations and Deputy Chairman of
the PI Governing Board, Dr. Ismail Taj, PI Senior Vice
President and Provost, Mr. Faisal Al Ali, Head of the
Scholarship Department in ADNOC, Dr. Karl Berteussen,
Director of Research at the PI and a number of executive
managers, departments’ heads from the PI, ADCO,
Zakum Development Company (ZADCO) and Abu Dhabi
Gas Liquefaction Company Ltd. (ADGAS) were among
attendees.
In his keynote, Al Kindy welcomed attendees and
encouraged PI alumni to continuously pursue their hard
work and communicate with the institute. Meanwhile,
Dr. Taj stressed on alumni to keep in touch with the
institute after their graduation since this motivate the
exchange of their experiences with faculty and students
alike. Dr. Isoroku Kubo, who heads the PI Alumni Relations
Department Alumni Committee, expressed his gratitude
with this dinner, which is considered the first of its type for
male graduates, that reflects strong connection between
former students and the PI.
The party witnessed the attendance of 125 former PI
students in an observation that exceeded expectations.
According to PI sources, the institute main hall was full of

Arzanah inaugurates New Program for,
welcomes First Cohort of Female Graduates
The Women in Science and
Engineering Program says farewell
and welcome to its first cohort of
graduates and alumnae. The group
includes 10 chemical engineers, 14
electrical engineers, 4 mechanical
engineers, 2 petroleum engineers
and 6 petroleum geoscientists. Six
of the graduates will be joining the
PI’s graduate programs and one will
be heading to MIT this fall. All others
have successfully completed their
job interviews with ADNOC and
will shortly be assigned their first
full time job. Many of the graduates
have promised to return to Arzanah
in Fall as alumnae volunteers.
Meanwhile in response to a specific
request from ADNOC, the Petroleum
Institute’s Women in Science and
Engineering Program was asked
to identify approaches to easing
female students’ transition into the
workplace upon graduation. A team
of senior ADCO personnel and WISE
Program management developed
and sponsored a two-day program.
The program, entitled ‘S-E-N-E-D’,
which translates into ‘support’
in Arabic, stands for ‘Supports,
Educates, Nurtures, Encourages and
Develops’ in English.
The 1st S-E-N-E-D Program was held
in the Petroleum Institute’s facility
for female students, Arzanah, on
June 5th and 6th, 2011. It was very
well attended, with the majority
of the first graduating cohort of
female students participating. The
Program offered fundamental
information about the realities,
opportunities, and challenges that
the new female graduates will face
as they transition in the workplace.
It aimed to develop the mindset and
skills necessary for their survival and
successful integration in complex
organizations. It focused on the
professional skills needed during the
first few months of employment and
the support mechanisms available
to help new graduates succeed.
The S-E-N-E-D Program includes
number of workshops that address
different areas which include resume
writing for success highlighting the
different sections of a resume and
how to present the information
professionally, experiential
leadership which concentrates on
development of leadership skills
and highlights related leadership
issues, qualities and solutions,
lifelong learning; introducing the
principles of lifelong learning and
their relevance to the success of
an employee, professionalism and
ethics in the workplace; highlighting
overt and covert issues that women
can face in today’s workplace,
real Stories from real Women;
a panel discussion with leading
female professionals from the
OPCOs, a model colleague; offering
participants an opportunity to
engage in a guided conversation with
one of the OPCOs’ senior managers
and the nature of the workplace;
focusing on the commonalities and
differences within the dominant
and subordinate groups in the
workplace, and assist the participants
to generate effective actions and
skills for successful functioning in
the workplace. All the participants
in the S-E-N-E-D Program confirmed
that the program had provided
them with invaluable information
and development opportunities.

Arzanah students take part in Academic
Challenge in Vienna & Thailand
After successfully submitting an entry to an international
competition founded by the European Association of
Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) entitled “The value of
integrating Geoscience and Engineering”, WISE Program
senior students Miaad Al Hammadi, Amena Al Harethi and
Basma Mohammed were invited as one of only eight groups
worldwide to participate in the first ever EAGE Student
FIELD Challenge to be held in Vienna. The EAGE Student
FIELD (Fully Integrated Evaluation and Development)
Challenge aims to promote cross-disciplinary geoscience
and engineering integration within universities, and it was
organized in conjunction with TOTAL.
To enter the competition, competing groups were provided
with a set of geological and geophysical data taken from
an oil and gas field in Syria. The students were required to
analyze and integrate the data, and prepare a report and
presentation showing a proposed development plan for
the field. With the support of the faculty of the Petroleum
Geosciences Department, as well as the Petroleum
Engineering Department, the students worked diligently
on their complex project while completing their senior year
studies.
The students were delighted to win a prestigious place in the
EAGE Student FIELD Challenge in last May. Accompanied
by Dr. Sandra Vega, Miaad, Amena and Basma travelled to
Vienna to compete against seven other teams of the world’s
top Geoscience and Petroleum Engineering students.
Their presentation was delivered on May 22nd and each
student took an active part in presenting their findings
and strategies for the multifaceted project. The WISE
Program team’s presentation was very well received by the
audience and team members noted that they had gained
tremendously from the experience. Their involvement
in the competition improved their self confidence and
provided them with positive feedback on the quality of
their studies while at the Petroleum Institute, and showed
that how well prepared they are for study towards a
Masters Degree, which all are intending to undertake after
the summer break.
Meanwhile WISE Program Petroleum Engineering junior
student Sara Bakhti has been selected to participate
in the International Petroleum Technology Conference
Education Week in Bangkok, Thailand in November 2011.
This conference: “…. is a collaborative effort among the
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG);
the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers
(EAGE); the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG);
and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). The synergy
of these four, leading, individual-member driven societies
provides the most comprehensive opportunity to form
multi-disciplinary committees and an outstanding technical
program”.

WISE Program students tour Abu Dhabi Aviation
A group of selected Advanced University Placement (AUP)
and Mechanical Engineering female students visited on May
the Abu Dhabi Aviation facility at Abu Dhabi International
Airport. They were part of a tour organized by the
Mechanical Engineering Department. Abu Dhabi Aviation
is the largest commercial helicopter operator in the Middle
East. The main business activity of the company is focused
on support of off-shore oil production and construction
projects.
The students were able to learn about basic principles
of flight and technical operations, and observe aircraft
undergoing various maintenance procedures. The
tour included a short presentation and visits to several
workshops located in the hangar, such as the technical
records room, structural repairs, radios and electronics,
battery maintenance shop, wheel and tire repair shop,
paint shop, non-destructive testing and evaluation shop
and the engine and transmission overhaul shop. The visit
was particularly useful as it allowed the students to observe
the application of engineering principles to the design and
maintenance of aircraft.

convened in association with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company
(ADNOC) with the attendance of 250 industry experts from
25 countries at the Hilton Abu Dhabi Hotel May 24.
“The Second International Digital Oilfield Conference which
is a unique event focusing on Digital Oil Field Implementation
in the Middle East and particularly here in Abu Dhabi,”
said Mr. Saleh Al Wahedi, Senior Vice President of ADCO
Engineering and Projects, in his keynote on behalf of Mr.
Abdul Munim Al Kindy, CEO of Abu Dhabi Company for
Onshore Operations (ADCO). Al Wahedi stressed that “It has
been well documented that the benefits of Digital Oil Field
can increase reservoir recovery, increase production, lower
operational costs and reduce the exposure to HSE risks. It also
provides a more stimulating working environment and allows
new graduates to develop faster.”
Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations, ADCO, chose
the North East Bab field to pioneer the Smart Field concept
within the company from the early field development stage.
The field is equipped with all the required instrumentation,
control and telecommunications infrastructure for remote
monitor and control functionality, and a new Collaborative
Work Environment allows seamless working between field and
office based staff, said Al Wahedi. “ADCO has demonstrated
its long term commitment to the Smart Field concept, selecting
it as a ‘Strategic Choice’ within the business plan. A dedicated
full-time team has been created with expertise to develop and
implement an integrated programme, ensuring that key Smart
Fields features will be available across all assets by 2015.”
The conference program discussed and debated a variety
of concepts on Digital Oil Fields (DOF) such as the proper
implementation of the Collaborative Work Environment and
associated change management, Actual field experience in
remote monitoring, control and instrumentation, Practical
results of DOF data management programmes and benefits
of developing industry production standards, Case studies
of operational and security issues in installing reliable
communication systems, Real time visualization experiences
and lessons learnt from other sectors that will benefit the
Exploration & Production sector, the importance of proper work
flows in DOF projects, the present and future vision for DOF.
DOF is considered much more than just implementing a new
technology for the future. It will provide an exciting and
stimulating working environment remotely.
Two pre-conference workshops took place with the
participation of 40 speakers who took part in seven sessions
the following two days. An exhibition on DOF took place
along the conference with the participation of 12 exhibiting
specialized companies in the latest technologies, equipments
related to the design and administration of DOFs. In addition
to ADNOC, nine other international companies took part in
sponsoring the event and 11 media partners.
The conference committee includes 22 members from
ADNOC, its Group of Companies, a number of GCC National
Oil Companies and companies from the USA, UK, Germany
and Norway.
The conference has been showing success since its launch
a year ago. The number of participants has increased by
more than double compared to last year’s of 135. More
diversification of addressed and debated subjects and issues
was observed. ADNOC’s sponsorship for such conference
reflects its commitment toward supporting innovative
initiatives related to the oil industry.

Dr. Karl Berteussen:
Research Value Reached up to AED 70 Million
The Research Department at the Petroleum Institute (PI) has been playing a major role in
the activities of ADNOC and its Group since its establishment in 2003. It has been providing
solutions to challenges that oil and gas operations face in general where its activities has raised
to AED 70 million in value. However, the PI looks into further growth in terms of research and
development and accordingly a new Research Center will be due to be inaugurated in 2013
adding value to ADNOC academic vision and so mission. The new center aims to attract highly
qualified and specialized caliber to be a hub for R & D in Abu Dhabi, UAE and the region.
To know more about the PI Research Department, ‘ADNOC News’ has met with Dr. Karl
Berteussen, Director of Research & Professor of Geophysics at the PI.
What is the nature of work
conducted by Research
Department at the PI?
When talking about the Research
Department at the PI, an important
note has to be highlighted. The PI
is considered an academic university
that has strong connection with
ADNOC which ranks four or five
internationally in the Oil and Gas
sector. This is considered a positive
element in the mission of a small
university like the PI. It is very simple!
The PI takes on educating and
qualifying youth to get them ready to
take initiatives when it comes to oil
and gas activities in the UAE. Also,
we are responsible of conducting all
sorts of research related to the oil
and gas industry. Over the past few
years, the department has presented
a variety of research papers that were
different from any others issued by
other research institutions on the
UAE level. With no doubt, the focus
has been on activities and so the
ambitions of ADNOC and its Group
of Companies. However, challenges
remain. Accordingly, we have to face
them preemptively. That is why we
are in the process to construct the
PI Research Center during the last
quarter of this year and inaugurate it
in 2013.

What does characterize the
Research Department at the PI
from its counterparts across the
UAE?
The Research Department at the PI is
considered a leader in issuing a wide
range of publications, periodicals and
papers in the field of engineering
sciences. We have allocated sub
committees to follow research work.
There is the Oil Sub Committee that
include the membership of Abu Dhabi
Company for Onshore Operations
(ADCO), Abu Dhabi Marine Operating
Company (ADMA-OPCO) and Zakum
Development Company (ZADCO) and
there is the Gas Sub Committee that
includes Abu Dhabi Gas Industries
Ltd. (GASCO) and Abu Dhabi Gas
Liquefaction Company Ltd. (ADGAS).
Such committees monitor, coordinate
and review the different research
works conducted. In line with that, we
suggest ideas and present papers and
conclusive studies where and exchange
of ideas and facts on the ground takes
place. In result, a common ground
vision to what could be potential and
beneficial would be recommended in
general and for ADNOC & its Group of
Companies in specific.
What are the subjects and topics
tackled by the Department?
Corrosion, water injection, power
saving and gas treatment are
examples of such topics that are
been addressed on a regular basis.
For example; crude oil reservoirs are
considered to be different in the UAE
and the region from other parts in the
world where here they are referred to
as Carbonates. If we think of inject
Carbon Dioxide Gas in such reservoirs,
then we have to think twice before
doing so; will the gas react with
some or all the reservoir geological
components or not? In reality, no one
knows. So our task is to find answers
to such questions.
How important is research today
in world driven by quick profit
making?
The department works on training
qualified caliber that enables those
with excellent talents to be able to
deal with touch issues and make
crucial decisions. Accordingly, this
would indulge a specific individual in
a realistic research experience at least
once in their life time. Among our
tasks is to train more Emirati qualified
talents on technical matters and the
decisions that go along such process.
The PI started with granting Bachelor
degrees and now has graduate
programs to expand further. There
is a great need for everything related
to research and so development.
Research is something inevitable.
There is no other choice!
How many research staff does
the department have and what
is the breakdown mechanism of
working hours in administrative,
academic and research duties in
general?
Today, we have 100 professors where
10% of them are Emiratis. There is
an internationally common standard
for the breakdown of working hours
for a typical professor. Professors
are expected to spend 40% of their
time on academic tasks, 20% on
administrative while the remaining
40% go to research. We also have
a number of assistant professors and
lab engineers who work together
with one team spirit.
What does distinct the PI
from other institutions locally,
regionally and internationally?
The very close proximity between the
Research Department and industry
sector’ companies and facilities is a
big plus. The oil fields, associated
lab, control rooms, export ports and
so forth are all close. If we want a
specific data base to conduct a certain
research, ADNOC and its Group of
Companies are there providing fully
unlimited support and cooperation
that many institutions miss out. If
some institutions have such support,
the distance remains widely long
compared to us. In addition, the
PI has a wide range on what is the
latest in technology in terms of labs,
instrumentations and so forth. This
is something we are very keen to
preserve in the upcoming research
center when it opens in 2013. We
look forward to that center to be a
scientific and research enlightment
hub on the local and regional levels.
What are the challenges and
mechanisms to face them?
There is a great need to give research as
concept a much better understanding
and awareness in people’s souls and
minds. Research and post-Research
are tasks that need considerable time
and patience. But their outcome is
realistically more sustainable on the
ground. If we go in our memories
20 years back, it will be noticed that
we have given good evaluations on
a wide range of research conducted.
This was attributed in big part to the
Organization of Petroleum Exporting
Countries (OPEC) that determines
the ceiling level of each member
production capacity. However, today
things have changed. The world has
been witnessing drastic changes on all
levels. ADNOC senior management
is fully aware of the importance
of research in facing today’s rising
dilemmas to face future challenges.
This is due to two main factors; First,
ADNOC knows, sooner or later, it
needs to provide oil and gas solutions
itself. ADNOC operates crude oil
activities from a different geological
landscape, Second, ADNOC has
the kind of activities and initiatives
to educate and prepare its human
capital to do the job. Since I joined
the PI, I have been witnessing such
changes taking place on the ground
on the right track. We believe the PI
stands at the same level where other
prestigious international universities
stand in the fields of oil, gas and other
related disciplines.

What has caught your attention
the most?
When I came to the PI, I used to ask
male students whether the females
would ever have a presence at the oil
fields. “No! This can never happen!”
would be their fast response. But look
around today. Women are there at the
offshore and onshore sites working
and engaging themselves actively in
all tasks. I believe Emirati women
will be leading future scientists. They
are more persistent and have a lot of
potential that they want to prove on
the ground and in the field.
What sort of cooperation do
you have with other research
institutions in the UAE such as
the Masdar Institute and other
international universities?
We have different types of cooperation
with Masdar Research Center on
Carbon Dioxide Gas Injection and
Storage technologies. We have
cooperation with the UAE University.
However, we should look forward to
more cooperation and coordination
with other academic institutions
and universities across the UAE. In
addition, we opened channels of
communications for exchange of
ideas on many topics with several
universities in the region.
Internationally, there has been
continuous coordination with a
variety of universities such as Colorado
School of Mines, the University of
Texas at Austin, Rice University in
Houston and Stanford University
in California. We look forward to
increase our levels of cooperation
with leading European universities in
oil, gas and petrochemicals’ studies.

Al Suwaidi
Passion of Knowledge
Mr. Ahmed Saeed Al Suwaidi joined ADNOC in February 2003
as a Contracts Engineer in the Shared Services Directorate
and stayed for a year and two months. Then he moved to the
Administrative Affairs as Contracts Coordinator for a year and
four months until the third quarter of 2005. He later on relocated
to the Payments Section in the Finance Division by the end of
the year until March 2007 when he remained his post since
then. Prior to working for ADNOC, Al Suwaidi worked for more
than four years as Customs Officer at the Cargo Department in
Abu Dhabi International Airport Customs. Prior to that, he had
worked for six months in the private sector in Abu Dhabi. Mr. Al
Suwaidi has a BA in Business Administration from the University
of Colorado in Pueblo in the U.S.
Under the Crude Oil and Condensate Division within the
Marketing and Refining Directorate and complementing two
other sections within the division; the Far East Area Sales and
Supplies Sections, the West and Near East Area Sales coordinate
all marketing, sales and distribution of crude oil quotas with
long term contract clients in such regions. This requires the
capability and talent to continuously adapt understand and meet
the expectations, forecasts and demands of clients from wide
range of environments, cultures and economic foundations.
This adds excitement and passion to know what is differently
new in today’s world. The section supervise the pricing process
of the different bench marks of four crude types that ADNOC
represent in the international markets such as Murban,
Upper and Lower Zakum and Umm Shaif and two types of
condensates; Thummama & Owainat, but the most important
of all internationally is Murban. The section along with other
sections and divisions within the division exert maximum efforts
for revenues to reach their maximum levels. Staff members of
the three sections meet three times a month with the division
manager to continuously follow up, review and evaluate sales
and pricing activities in terms of circumstances and the latest
developments in international markets. This takes place in
parallel with continuous communications with all involved
parties and consumers as well. The section in continuous contact
with the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
in Vienna, Austria and the International Energy Association in
France and the Energy Information Administration in the U.S.

Beside his dedication to his work, Al Suwaidi has a

since I was a child,” says Al Suwaidi. “The nature of
this job is rich with everything new and exciting for
markets’ fluctuations, clients and latest oil sector news
developments that we follow on the international
news wires.” It is an opportunity to know people and
know a lot about other parties’ cultures and ways of
thinking, he adds. “I have always been looking to
ADNOC with a lot of appreciation, respect and loyalty
since I was a child. This has been attributed to its
contribution in the welfare of society and prosperity
of the UAE and beyond. This has matured and
reflected via work persistence, follow up and giving
as we enter the second decade of the 21st Century,”
says Al Suwaidi.
Al Suwaidi is married and has four daughters. He
enjoys shopping, sea trips, travel, people and nations’
traditions and cultures.

The Ruwais Housing Complex … with such
a beautifully idealistic atmosphere
The Ruwais Housing Complex is
surrounded by a densely nice green
belt that plays a major role in creating
a freshly clean air. Such belt creates
a green environment enriched with a
nursery that produces a wide variety
of roses, flowers and plants. A
permanent gardening team is on site
to assure the greenery of the place
and surrounding areas along the year.
The complex is bordered with widely
stretched beautifully set gardens and
parks that add more beauty. The
parks are equipped with kids playing
grounds, facilities and football, basket
ball and Tennis courts. The park area
regularly witnesses many activities,
occasions and celebrations that are
organized by the ADNOC Executive
and Social Committee in Ruwais.
Such beautiful scene and impression
has made the area an attraction for
many birds, pets and friendly animals.
No wonder, staff in charge of the
complex and its surrounding areas
has set up a man made lake which
has become the home for many types
of animals such as ducks, swans and
dears.
There are three fountains in the parks
with a capacity of raising the water
up to 20 meters high adding beauty
to the scene. Special rest and leisure
areas have been designed and put in
place for more joy by visitors.
Al Yash Hotel I stands in the middle
of it all with its central location. It
is located just 500 meters from the
complex entertainment center and 3
km from the housing administration
building. Al Yash Hotel was opened
in 2000 consisting of a guest house,
a three-story hotel. It was built
according with the latest designed
facilities at the time. It has 120 rooms,
four luxurious wings, main reception
area, restaurant, meeting hall and
fully equipped entertainment hall.
There is a billiard room on each level.
There are additional restaurants,
training and meeting rooms that are
equipped with the latest audio and

ADNOC wins first title in the 5th Annual Swimming
Competition for Government Departments
Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, Representative of the UAE President and Chairman
of the Government Departments Sports Association, the
5th Annual Swimming Competition of Swimming Teams
for Government Departments concluded in May with the
declaration of ADNOC being the champion, where Abu
Dhabi Education Zone came second and Abu Dhabi Police
third.
The competition took place at Al Bateen Main Swimming
Pool in Abu Dhabi. ADNOC & UAE national swimming
team member Mr. Saeed Ahmed Obaid Al Jasmi won three
gold medals for the 50 meter Round (Free position), the 50
meter Round (Chest position) and the 100 meter Round
(Various Positions). Meanwhile, Mr. Bakheet Ahmed
Al Jasmi from Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company
(ADMA-OPCO) achieved the first title by receiving two gold
medals in the 50 meter competition (Back position) and 50
meter competition (Butterfly position) and a contestant for
the 100 meter competition (Various positions).
Mr. Salem Nayef Al Katheeri, Deputy General Secretary
and Head of the Marketing Committee of the association
and Mr. Mohamed Jassim Al Jallaaf, Association Board
member and manager of the Government Departments
Sports Association, crowned the winning individuals and
teams.
Al Katheeri hailed the level the competition and the winner
for what has been achieved. He recognized the good set
up and cooperation that all parties involved have expressed
including the school staff. ADNOC’s victory reflects the
company and its group of companies’ interest and care
about sports and good health believing the good mind is
in the good body.

AL Ain decorates The World
Heritage List
The United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization
UNESCO inscribed 17 sites in Al Ain
city to the world heritage list. Situated
in the eastern part of UAE Al Ain city
is a home of many archeological sites
which include among others Hili,
Jimi Oasis, Umm Al Nar, Jaihi Forts,
Mezayed, Hafeet Mountain, Bidaa
Bint Saud Eastern Fortress, Ain Oases
and the camel market in the city.
Under the UAE wise leadership the
city of Al Ain managed to maintain
its local characteristics from an urban
perspective in spite of the speedy
developmental transformations
being witnessed in UAE and this is
principally thanks to the vision of late
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,
founder of the UAE, who passed a
set of laws and statutes that ensured
the city would maintain its original
construction, perfection and heritage.
This international recognition will
definitely raises awareness for
protection of heritage, promotes
tourism, revives local economy and
strengthen the spirit of nationalism.
It also represents great achievements
that reflect the due concern which the
AUE leadership pays to protection,
promotion and support of local
heritage.
The archeological sites in Al Ain
and Abu Dhabi are abundant with
very important vestiges showing the
residential and funeral practices from
the stone and iron ages. The vestiges
reflect the culture of Hafit Mountain
and Umm Al nar, a combination
of desert, mountainous and oasis
sights of a distinctive international
value which stand as a testimony for
a distinct cultural norms formed at
the cross points of the commercial
routes that linked the ancient
civilizations. The master plan of the
oases development is aiming at
rehabilitation and restoration of the
cultural, social and economic sites
at the oasis within a comprehensive
cultural international approach while
maintaining the local touch and
historical heritage of the city.
According to Abu Dhabi Authority
for Culture and Heritage (ADACH)
intensive research initiatives have
been conducted to encompass Al
Ain oases in the urban and social
structure of the city while preserving

and protecting the same as valuable
archeological sites. For that end a
research was initiated in cooperation
with Harvard University in 2009 to
study Al Qatarah and Al Jimi oases.
Around 140 missions in more than
25 important historical sites in Al Ain
were carried out in the first stage. The
aim of these missions was to ensure
safety and integrity of the historical
buildings on the short run and to
preparer them for restoration in the
long rum. The restoration works for
the collapsed parts in the historical
sites in Al Jimi oasis have also started
in 2010.
ADACH is busy working on listing,
rehabilitation and restoration of
the historical buildings in Al Ain
city according to a well defined
strategy which adopts up-to-date
methods and techniques. This great
achievement comes several months
after the success of Abu Dhabi
in inscription of falconry in
the representative list
of the intangible
cultural heritage
of humanity
through an international file described
by UNESCO as the best in terms of
scientific accuracy, subjectivity and
quality. The concerned authorities
are continuing restoration and
rehabilitation works in a number
of forts and historical sites such
as Al Jahili mosque and fort, Bin
Hadi House in Hili oasis and dozens
of archeological sites. Meanwhile
rehabilitation works are underway on
a number of old buildings such as
the traditional market in Al Qattara to
restore the original usages for which
these building were established and
to integrate them in the infra structure
facilities to ensure their protection
and integrity on the long run. On
the social aspect, Al Ain residents
are very keen on preserving the old
social and cultural norms habits which
testifies the ancient history of the city
and proves its valuable cultural and
historical assets to the world
Generally speaking the geological,
archeological and historical
importance of Hafeet Mountain,
Hili civilization, Badaa Bin Saud,
the oases and Aflaj (water clefts) as
complementary assets hard to exist
together in any part of the world. These
cultural and natural assets helped Al
Ain city to compile a comprehensive
scientific file according to the best
international standards crowing the
on going efforts to put the city in the
international tourism map.
Al Ain city is a remarkable tourist
site of a distinctive nature stemming
from the ancient history of the city. It
is a beautiful natural site surrounded
by sand dunes dating back to 500
thousand year and continuous
sedentary human occupation since
more than 6500 years a fact proved
by the numerous Falaj (water
clefts) since early history. Hafteet
Mountain is appearing high as a
guard overlooking the palm tree
oases offering an impressive view
over the city with its vast plains, green
oases and tourist attractions. The
mountain represents an additional
cultural dimension to Al Ain city due
to its exceptional value which stems
from the geological, archeological
and historical importance of the city
as well the biological and natural
significance as a home of 70% of the
biological diversity of Abu Dhabi.

Demand for
Increased Power

Production

There has been growing need for countries of
the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to increase
production of electricity to meet social and
economic development demands for the near
future. Emirates Center for Strategic Studies
and Research (ECSSR) 13th Annual conference
addressed such challenge where several papers
were presented in that regard and compiled in a
book titled ‘Future Energy Supplies in the GCC’
by Ali Abdullah Al Owais. He highlighted the
significance in transforming from conventional to
renewable and nuclear energies in the Arabian
Gulf since such shift may take up to 15 years in
cases of solar, wind or nuclear energies.
Among those presented papers was by Sultan
Al Muhairi who mentioned that internal nonindustrial
usage of oil and gas has increasingly
been consuming big chunk of the countries’
production. But he stressed that in parallel with
hydrocarbons, the development of renewable
energy, GCC countries would be more capable
to diversify its resources. The UAE has chosen to
invest in renewable energy, not just to preserve
energy and save on cost, but to encourage people
for a cleaner environment.
The book has talked about the future of nuclear
energy from a regional and international
perspective. Several estimations and new scenarios were
presented to possibly open new horizons into nuclear expansions

The book contains several sections that address a variety of
topics such as the rising demand for energy in the GCC, forecasts
and expectations of renewable energies, solutions in meeting
rising demands for energy in the GCC, energy preservation and
associated management programs, reaching a standard fee,
integration of electricity networks, consolidate international
integration programs, more investment in renewable energy
development, setting up a long term plan to generate power,
increase power generation capacity and the adoption of full
scale integrated facilities.

The book has discussed future potential of Natural Gas
in GCC countries, the advantages of maximum benefit
from Gas in the Gulf, the role governments play in
minimizing power consumption. The book outlined the
recent developments in renewable energy technologies
from the applications and hypothesis of models such as
solar, wind and fuel cells.
The book has tackled the utilization of nuclear energy
as an alternative for power generation stressing how
mature it is since it is been used in many countries. It
was noted that forth generation nuclear platforms
depend on the circulation of the fuel closed cycle and
high temperature to reach their objectives and improve
performance.
On the other hand, the book addressed the risks of
nuclear energy. In his presented paper themed ‘The
strategic impacts of nuclear technologies on GCC
countries’, Mr. Saleh Al Mana’a referred to possible
regional threats and instabilities of powers’ balance
in the region. Moving forward with big steps and
investments in nuclear energy may provoke significant
sensitivities in the region. GCC countries may practice
their rights in nuclear production as well.
The importance of renewable fuels and technologies
associated with them was highlighted. It was presented
how fuel derivatives could be used in future vehicles.
The last presentation was about the possibilities of using
renewable resources such as winds, photosynthesis,
biotechnological materials, earth heat, sea waves, and
hydraulic energy. However, it was emphasized how
solar energy is greatly available in the region as well.

Cant people live without Credit Cards Today?
“In Debt We Trust,” Using the famous statement that appears
on the back of One US Dollar Currency Note ‘In God We
Trust’, is a documentary that exposes the dilemma of Credit
Cards on society and how this is attributed to the corruption
of the financial system in the world in specific and corruption
that penetrates almost every aspect of humans’ minds and
souls in general.
Interviewing business executives, politicians, economists
and bankruptcy lawyers, Danny Schechter raises a variety of
questions; can average individuals live without credit cards?
Can they have a day or week passes without a credit card
transaction? Can someone get an attractive discount when
buying an item or purchasing a book or a ticket online or in
person only if using a credit card is enforced, but without
having the will use that credit card? Is it bad or good to have
a credit card and where could humans draw the red line on
how and when to use that magnetic plastic card.
Despite the fact that the documentary was produced in the
year 2006, it gave implicit warning that a near future market
crash would be looming in the horizon. But few seem to have
paid attention at the time or even dared to pay attention.
With the several people featured in the film, Schechter, who is
known as the “The News Dissector” exposes a wide range of
people suffering from credit card debt from families, college
students, average workers where they all were putting the
blame on credit cards and labeled them as the ‘bad guys’.
However, none of those interviewed brought the issue
of personal responsibility. Yes, the fact is banks, financial
institutions and credit card companies used super aggressive
and persistent measures and means to seduce consumers
with these cards, but they claim they never force end users
neither to use them nor to have them!
The film shows how it has become much easier to get into
debt then ever before. It shows how a decline in real-value
wages, hikes in real costs, and lagging public policies are
the main causes behind increasing debts. Individuals lack
the ability adapt and connect to a living standard that does
not seem to be realistic are what is causing many Americans,
where the film produced, and many around the world to go
into debt, without realizing what they are indulge themselves
in and when later on they realize it is impossible to get
themselves out it.
Credit cards debt has been rising in today’s world. The poor
people get poorer and the rich just get richer and richer. This
has been causing a negative consequence in shrinking the
professionally working and middle class in many societies
and putting more economic and financial burden on people
personal and professional planning. The film urge the wide
segments of any society to stand up to their responsibilities
and expected duties toward their families, communities and
so countries to take on real challenges that face the society,
the work place and the environment, rather than spending
time and effort on the latest, but not necessary needed,
products, accessories, appliances and so forth at any mall or
used by a someone else just for superficial show off.
