as another New Year approaches
people will be thinking once again of
‘resolutions’ and many perhaps thinking
back to this time last year and wondering
why their resolutions didn’t last past
January.
People have a lot of different motivations for making
resolutions but broadly speaking they are usually
around improving themselves, making some aspect
of our lives better in some way. So, losing weight,
giving up smoking, exercising more, being more
assertive or taking up a new hobby make frequent
appearances in our New Year resolutions list. It’s
also no coincidence that many new courses, clubs
and even magazines, especially those based around
hobbies, start in January.
But this year giving some serious thought to your
resolutions could quite literally change your life.
The New Year is a great time to start learning
something new. This could be anything from cake
decorating to a martial art, learning a new language
to lace making. It could even be improving your
Maths and English. The saying ‘you’re never too old
to learn’ is definitely true and recent years have seen
a continued increase in people not just learning
for fun, but taking courses that can
eventually lead to a new career or
even a business of their own.
Many people seem to have
things they would enjoy
doing or learning yet never
actually enrol for anything.
This is often because
they lack confidence –
and their subconscious
tells them a few lies. It’s
that little internal voice that says ‘you’ll never
manage that’ or ‘who are you kidding ‘you’re not
clever enough’ or a thousand other things that
simply stop you doing what you want to do.
We all have those internal ‘scripts’ and often they
come from things that others have said to us in the
EDUCATION
New learning for the New year
past or from other past ‘experiences’. But we are
capable of changing – when we decide we are ready.
Change can be a challenge, even a bit daunting but
it can also open the door to all sorts of possibilities.
So maybe this new year could be the right time to
learn a bit more about yourself through life coaching
for example, or if really want to give yourself a late
Christmas present it could be the time to learn to
manage your stress or deal with that fear or phobia
that you have always struggled to overcome. There
are a whole range of Emotional Freedom
Techniques that can do just what
they say – offer you emotional
freedom from some of the
‘problems’ that hold you
back from the life you really
want.
At Attuned Education we
specialise in education for the
individual, from young children
learning to read to adults suffering with
low self esteem so this New Year perhaps
learning something new could be one of your
resolutions and make 2013 a year that will really
make a change for YOU.
FITNESS
Group exercise – Busting the Myths
it’s a scientific fact that
exercise makes you happier,
gives you more energy, helps
you lose weight and gain
muscle tone.
And, it can be social and fun
but you need to find the right
kind of exercise that suits your
needs. Group exercise is very
motivational and even if you are
the shy type you can always find a
place in the studio.
“Everyone in the room will be
fitter than me” Possibly but you
have to remember that it was
their first class once as well. Just
take things at your own pace.
“Everyone will look at me and
see how/bad/uncoordinated/
weak I am” No, they won’t. Step
outside a normal studio class
and watch… everyone in there
is watching themselves in the
mirror, concentrating on getting
it right, kicking a bit higher etc.
“I can’t lift those weights/kick
that high” In time you will be able
to. Get the technique right and
the rest will follow.
“I won’t know what to do” It’s all
so easy to pick up. The instructor
will talk you through technique
or weight selection and will
gently correct you if required. If
it’s a Zumba or dance class then
individuality is encouraged.
“I will bulk up if I lift weights”
During a weights only class
format such as Body Pump, it’s
all about endurance. An hour’s
weights class with the correct
weight will just tone you up and
not build big muscles.
20b De Parys Avenue, Bedford MK40 2TW
admin@bchiropracticclinic.co.uk www.bedford-chiropractor.co.uk
Ease yourself in gently to avoid
overpowering your body and
mind. One class the first week is
plenty and then gradually build
up over time.
Set yourself realistic targets. Write
the classes/sessions in your diary
or put them into your phone.
That way you will book other
things around your gym sessions.
Fitness should be fun.
Let the instructor motivate you
and you’ll soon find that that
hour has flown past, leaving you
with that huge smile on your face.
LIFESTYLE
Healthy eating Plan can improve diabetes
Mum of two, Sue Mitchel of Clapham Bedford suffers
from Type 1 diabetes but after joining her local Slimming
World group, she has been able to significantly reduce
her medication as well as her waistline by eating her
favourite foods including Fish and chips!
Like many mums, Sue had gained
weight during her pregnancies
and found it difficult to shift.
When shopping for clothes left
her feeling sad and hating the way
she looked, she knew she had to
make a change.
“I heard about the group from
some Mums at school. They were
raving about Slimming World &
looking amazing too so I had to
give it a try.”
Sue had tried many weight loss
methods before but they affected
her diabetes. ““Being overweight
is a risk factor for developing
complications from diabetes like
damage to eyes, heart, nerves.
I already have some kidney
damage so I needed to be careful.
I have tried diets before but they
were so restrictive and left me
with low blood sugar, needing a
snack to correct it and then more
insulin too - defeating the object!
With Slimming World, I was never
hungry, it is a very easy to follow
healthy eating plan and I don’t
have any issues with my blood
sugars now. At the Diabetes
Clinic, I felt great hopping on the
scales and the weight I have lost
will make an enormous difference
to my future health. I now only
need a quarter of the medication
that I originally needed – I still
can’t quite believe it!””
Since joining her group at Bedford
Heights Conference Centre on
Manton Lane, she lost 2 stone 10
lbs in just 21 weeks!
So much more confidence
Sue was recently crowned Miss
Slinky and is now entering
the Slimming World national
competition! Her group
consultant, Leanne Drake, said
“When I met Sue, she was quiet
and reserved but now she has
so much more confidence and
happily supports others in the
group.
I am so proud of her. The group
is a very social one and we are all
in it together – she has been an
inspiration”
Slimming World Consultant, Leanne
21 weeks later - the new Sue
Unhappy and unhealthy
Sue is thrilled that her future is
looking so much brighter now and
she has made dramatic changes
with both her appearance and
social life.
Enjoying jogging for the first time
with some of the other girls from
the group, Sue even plans to take
part in Race for Life next year!
“Now I have my confidence
back, I feel I healthy and I can’t
help smiling when I catch my
reflection in a window or mirror
-I feel like ‘Me’ again”
A carer is someone of any age
who spends a significant amount
of their life providing unpaid
support to a relative, friend or
neighbour who is ill, frail, mentally
or physically disabled or suffers
from substance misuse.
Carers in Bedfordshire strive to
identify and support all carers
by offering advocacy, a place to
be supported, social outings and
cafes, practical help and funding,
training and Carers breaks.
The Carers Lounge opened in
May at Bedford Hospital South
Wing to provide help, advice and
support. First points of crisis will
often occur at hospital when
someone is admitted to hospital
and it transpires they have an
illness requiring long term care.
. Similarly, there may have been
many admissions to hospital as
part of the illness and the carer
becomes exhausted and has little
support. These are difficult times
for all involved and the team are
there at any of these points to
offer help for new and registered
carers, give professional advice
and signpost to other support
services.
Christina Offord, the Carers
Lounge co-ordinator, has been a
carer for over 25 years and really
understands the difficulties it
brings and the value of real
support. She said “When you
are a carer yourself, it is a lot of
responsibility and it’s difficult,
isolating and exhausting. People
are trying to come to terms with
the changes in their life and all
carers are worried about what
will happen if they can’t cope.
We offer people the guidance
they really need. Being based
at the hospital, our aim is to be
more involved with the discharge
policies so we can recognise who
the carers are.”
Difficulty finding help
Ian, 58, has been a carer for the
last 30 years now for his wife,
Denis, who is an acute epileptic.
When she had breast cancer for
the second time, he found plenty
of support for her but he couldn’t
find any help for himself. He said
“I called various organisations
but found nothing. I suffered
with a period of depression and
had to see a counsellor. Then I
found a leaflet about the Carers
Lounge and went to see Christina.
That alone made the world
of difference to me. I needed
someone who could listen and
understand. She encouraged
me to go to the carers cafes and
although I was nervous at first,
HEALTH
Medicine of the future?
food intolerance? Allergies? Skin
complaints? Digestive Problems?
If you answered yes to any of these but don’t really
know the cause of them, read on.
Developed with NASA technology, the Asyra Pro is
thought to be the most advanced user-friendly, bioenergetic
screening and treatment device available
today.
Simply put, this incredible technology can “read”
your body to help identify areas of concern.
It can highlight nutritional deficiencies and help
the body to address them by producing a bespoke
remedy, as well as supplement recommendations.
Causes of bloating, eczema, asthma, digestive
complaints and chronic or acute conditions may all
be identified with bio-resonance screening.
Sue Bedford, a Registered Nurse, offers health and
wellbeing services through her company, Pulse
Health Screening and has recently added bioresonance
testing, helping people to take control of
their health. Sue screens people of all ages, including
young children and babies.
‘Many of my clients feel frustrated’
It is safe, accurate, quick and non-invasive. She said
“Many of my clients feel frustrated with long term
issues like food intolerance and chronic conditions
such as irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and
fatigue.
In the case of food intolerance, it can take days for a
symptom to manifest, making it difficult to pinpoint
the actual food responsible.
Sue Bedford
Sometimes it can be one
element in the food that
causes the intolerance,
making it near
impossible to identify
but the Asyra can
actually pinpoint what
may be stressing the
body. My clients have
been really impressed
with it.”
The Asyra asks your body questions
So how does it work?
This is the interesting part…It ‘asks’ your body
questions by sending small, electrical impulses or
frequencies through two hand held brass probes.
Your body ‘replies’ through changes in the electrical
resistance of the skin, similar to how a lie-detector
works, and the Asyra interprets them as imbalance
or abnormality. It screens the energetic state of
internal organs, emotional and toxic stressors,
food and environmental sensitivities, nutritional
deficiencies, hormonal balance, exposure to
pathogens and much more.
A comprehensive health analysis is produced in
under 5 minutes. Based on the results, an individual
and bespoke, digital, homeopathic remedy is
given to take for 3-6 weeks, consisting of drops
placed under the tongue, twice a day. After the
recommended period, a retest is done to check the
issues have resolved. There may be need for a new
remedy, depending on the results, giving a flexible
approach to the treatment plan.
Sue is offering half price screenings at £35 and a
follow up test at £25 for Community Life readers
who book in January. Under 16’s pay £25, and £15
for a follow-up test. The homeopathic remedy is
included in the price.
RELATIONSHIPS
Big Journeys begin with small steps…
the excesses of the Festive season have
receded and it’s time to face up to
the New Year. A new year often feels like
a fresh start, a chance to break bad habits
and establish new routines that will help
you feel good about yourself and improve
your life.
Of course, resolutions are much easier to make than
to keep and by the end of January many of us have
abandoned our resolve and settled back into our old
patterns. Anyone who has ever made and broken
New Year Resolution can appreciate the difficulty
of behaviour change. Making a lasting change in
behaviour is not a simple process, and usually
involves a substantial commitment of time, effort
and emotion.
It is important to be realistic. It can be tempting
to set a number of goals but sticking to one aim is
more manageable, you can always take on a new
resolution once you have made the first one stick.
Achieving your goal
Plan ahead, you are more likely to be successful if
you have thought through what you need to do to
achieve your goal and what might trip you up. Think
about what it would be like to have succeeded in
your resolution, how you would feel and what other
people would notice about you.
Start with small steps. In any change process you
may need to try different techniques to get where
you want to be so set small tasks that can gradually
move you towards your goal. Take time to review
what is working and what isn’t and reward yourself
for positive steps you have made. The change you are
trying to make or the habit you are trying to break
has probably been part of your life for a long time
and change won’t happen overnight.
In any behaviour change, relapses are a common
occurrence. The key to success is to not let these
setbacks undermine your self-confidence. If you
lapse back to an old behaviour, take a hard look at
why it happened. What triggered the relapse? What
can you do to avoid these triggers in the future? You
can learn from a relapse so don’t see it as a failure.
There is no magic rule that says resolutions can only
be made in January, in fact it might be better to use
the long dark days to plan and prepare for change
and then move into action as the days start to draw
out and spring begins.
Good luck .... and keep trying!
Research shows that change is much more likely
to stick if you have really prepared the way and
thought it through. Good luck, and if you don’t at
first succeed try, try again.
Interests in new age
healing, and belief in the
healing power of crystals
are at present at an all
time high. Even people
who don’t believe in
the power that they are
in contact with are still
drawn to a lucky stone for
happiness and wealth, and
those with both serious
and ongoing health problems are often
thankful for a small tumble stone to use
as a worry charm.
All crystals give out frequencies of vibration.
(Think the quartz part of a quartz crystal watch,
which pulses with great regularity, thus showing
and keeping correct time.)
Certain vibrations are believed to connect
with parts of the body’s own healing system,
to promote a more healthy way forward, every
different crystal give out different frequencies to
aid different ailments.
Crystal healers recommend holding or sitting
in company of these crystals to promote better
health. Here are some of the most helpful crystals
HEMATITE
Is strongly connected with
the blood and circulatory
system, It is an iron
based ore, and crystal healers
believe that it can clear the blood, and regulates
the circulatory system, kidneys and liver. As a
tumbled crystal this is a small pewter grey silver
stone, which appears heavier than its expected
weight when held. In its raw state it resembles
rusty coloured chewed gum, and is often found
connected to another crystal; usually Calcites or
Quartz.
To advertise please call 01234 310521 or email: teresa@communitylifemag.co.uk
CALCITE
In its many colours calcite
is useful for a gentle life
healing, and the removal of
stresses, which accompany
today’s environment. It is
found in natural blues green
yellows reddish browns and
transparent varieties.
Most calcites are thought
to aid with Kidney, Pancreas
and Spleen functions, Green
Calcite is believed to be able to help rid the body of
infections, and promote the growth of a barrier to
reduce the effect of micro
organisms, and clear
Optical Calcite
(Iceland Spar) is
said to help speech
impediments, and
difficulties with the voice.
FLUORITE
WELLBEING
HealiNG PoWer of crystals
Brings together Mind body and spirit in wholeness
and oneness, aiding the body to self regulate
illness and infection, it aids clarity of mind and is
thought to aid the quicker removal of symptoms
connected with colds and flu.
Fluorite is a beautiful mixture of Greens
Yellows and Purples in a clear
stone often used for candle
holders and palm stones.
Its energies are equally
useful whether placed on
the body or left standing in
a room to transmit healing
vibrations.
FROM COMMUNITY LIFE
FROM ALL OF US
enabling People with cerebral Palsy
to live life their way…
An activity weekend – Campfire Fun: (r to l) Neil Butler, Joe Price (staff), Ben Funge, Joseph Smith,
John Shayler, Will Logue (volunteer), Ollie Sutcliffe
originally established in 1954, BDCPS is
a small local charity with the primary
aim to support people in North and Mid
Bedfordshire with Cerebral Palsy and
associated disabilities, along with their
families and carers.
They pride themselves on aiming high and achieving
the most possible, with the focus on ability
rather than disability. They believe every single,
young disabled person has an equal right to all
opportunities available within their community.
Cerebral Palsy is a condition
that affects muscle control and
movement, usually resulting from
damage or injury to the developing
brain, before, during or after birth.
It is the most common form of
childhood physical disability in the
UK and as many as 1 in every 400
children may have C.P., meaning
nearly 2,000 babies from all social backgrounds and
ethnic groups are diagnosed every year.
Children with Cerebral Palsy have difficulties
controlling muscles and movements as they grow
and develop. No two people will be affected by C.P.
in the same way - it can be as mild as a weakness
in one hand ranging to almost complete lack of
movement and requiring help with many aspects
Rhys Sepede and Neil Butler.
of daily living. Some people can also have speech,
hearing, learning and visual disability and associated
disabilities such as epilepsy, hearing impairment,
feeding and behavioural issues.
BDCPS in Bedford strive to
give young people with C.P.
opportunities and equal chances.
With over 100 highly valued
volunteers, they believe the key
to supporting the children is
encouraging and empower them
to build their skills and confidence
and allowing them to express
themselves.
Providing support for families is a big priority. From
helping with educational statements and advocacy
wih the myriad of appointments, they offer support
to individuals – emotional and practical – whatever
is needed they are there at any time.
Jane Howard White, Support and Development
Manager, started work at BDCPS 15 years ago. Back
then, it was a telephone information service and her
dedication and commitment along with recruitment
of a small like-minded team has brought it to
the charity it is today. She said “We are a small charity
that makes a big difference. One of our parents told
me that so many children have to sit and just watch,
but with us they don’t watch – they do.”
Passionate and committed
Adam Emms, Activities Co-ordinator, has been with
the charity for over 5 years now. He says “I love the
creative freedom that we have and I’m passionate
and committed to helping the children express their
true selves.”
Adam and Rose McHugh run the Youth Clubs
and Playschemes and are always seeking new
collaborations. This year, Adam set up a partnership
with Bedford College. They offer rooms and sports
hall use for BDCPS to use as they wish. The young
people are enabled to set
their own schedule for sports, ❝
crafts and learning and it’s
very beneficial for young
adults in the transitional
stage to be in a college setting
within the community and develop life skills.
In 2011, a collaboration with Full House Theatre
Company in Bedford was a huge success. The
children created and designed their own costumes,
had their own ideas
and were supported in
what they wanted to do.
The resulting event was
‘Cirque Fantastique’ –an
expressive, stimulating,
colourful show and the
front cover photograph
displays the expressive
freedom that was a big part
of the day.
This year, a new, exciting and very different theatre
production was born -GASP...! This was about the
young, disabled people having the same chances as
their peers and to get their message across in a gritty
and emotional contemporary performance. They
were leaving school and moving on to adult services
so emotions were running high.
They asked questions about what they hoped for in
the future. What were their fears and what excited
Gasp! Expression through the Arts
We are a small
charity that makes
a big difference.
Left to right ... the BDCPS Team: Rose McHugh, Lillian
Circuit, Adam Emms, Jane Howard-White, Mandy Field
them about a bright, new future outside of school?
Using media, martial arts, physical theatre and
movement, they told the story of a fish breaking free
from its bowl and journeying to the ocean. Being
encouraged to explore what they wanted to express,
led to a wonderfully original piece of theatre.
Some had to overcome severe stage fright, others
were simply overwhelmed when at last their voices
and opinions were heard and expressed through
art and music. GASP! was
an inspiration for everyone.
The final production was
performed in The Hat Factory
in Luton and Bedford’s The
Place Theatre as part of the
Bedfringe Theatre Festival.
The young people at BDCPS now have an exciting
chance to gain an Arts Award- a national qualification
funded by The Arts Council - a chance to inspire
young people aged 7-25 to develop as artists and
help them to develop their
arts knowledge, creative
and communication skills.
Any level of contribution
counts and their theatre
performances will provide
the foundation for this
– proving that disability
doesn’t have to make a
difference.
Other developments for 2013 are providing
services to under 8s, even more clubs, activities and
opportunities, new and exciting partnerships and
further, holistic family support.
as Bedfordshire’s last
remaining area of
heathland, Cooper’s Hill
is unique, with generous
swathes of bouncy heather
either side of firm sandy
paths.
Managed by the Wildlife
Trust BCN (Bedfordshire,
Cambridgeshire and
Northamptonshire), the reserve
sits on the Greensand ridge, a
geological feature stretching
right across the county from
Leighton Buzzard in the southwest,
over to Gamlingay in south
Cambridgeshire.
As well as the large areas
of heather along with birch,
oak, gorse and broom scrub,
there is woodland to the north
growing over gently undulating
ground with beech and lime in
addition to the more usual birch
and oak. The distinctive echoing
call of the green woodpecker can
often be heard, especially when
disturbed from the ground where
it gathers ants, and in winter
months, the bright green with
flashes of yellow and red plumage
makes the woodpecker
especially visible.
Goldcrest, The prominent
golden yellow head stripe
of the goldcrest makes
them easy to spot, similarly
siskin with unmistakably streaky
yellow-green bodies.
Last winter controlled burning
of the heather took place here
for the first time, as a method of
stimulating and promoting new
growth – and is one of the oldest
methods used in managing
heathlands, and is still
used regularly on many
Siskin
upland moors as
well as lowland
heaths such as the New Forest.
Burning removes the older
heather stand making room for
new growth and stimulating
heather seeds which are in the soil
to germinate. As an alternative
controlled burning of the heather.
to cutting it is more effective at
promoting new growth and more
efficient, especially over uneven
ground. This form of controlled
burning can only take place
over the winter and in certain
weather conditions. Once
upon a time the site,
Goldcrest
now designated
SSSI (Site of Special
Scientific Interest) would have
been grazed by sheep or cattle
and the heather would have been
used by locals as fuel, bedding
and for thatching roofs.
Local records show that Cooper’s
Hill was once known as Ampthill
Warren - the Normans are
thought to have introduced
rabbits to Britain in the 11th
century for their meat and fur;
warrens were established on areas
of light soil where landowners
dug burrows to encourage the
rabbits.
Later, the seventh Duke of
Bedford planted conifers on the
heath, but these were felled in
1917 to help the war effort.
A DAY IN THE LIFE ...
Hannah Moss, 17, always knew she
wanted to join the police force and
after a week on work experience with
Bedfordshire Police, it encouraged her even
more. So she joined the cadets and is now
working towards a rewarding career.
Police cadets are volunteers aged 16-18 who
undertake basic training, develop their skills for a
professional career and learn about how a modern
police service operates. Two main elements are
respect and discipline and how to work and help
within the community. Hannah gained her NVQ
level 2 in Public Service through the cadets and she is
continuing her Level 3 extended at Bedford College.
She excelled during her first year training and in her
second year, applied for promotion to Head Cadet.
She said “In my first year, I learned how to do drill
which is an important part of the structure. I went
out on duties to support community events such
as the River Festival, charity walks and any event
where the force required the support of the cadets.
I worked hard, gaining many hours experience so I
could apply for Head Cadet. It paid off and now I
am proud to be in charge of the division. I take my
responsibilities seriously and enjoy supporting and
helping them all to develop.”
❝
There is a ranking structure
in the cadets and it is a highly
committed role. Hannah is
responsible for around 50
cadets, ensuring duties are
covered, discipline is kept,
timekeeping is met, paperwork completed, uniform
standards are high whilst maintaining her own role
model position. “It is really important for me to meet
the standards required so I can support the cadets in
achieving the same level.”
THE SERVICES
Hannah Moss – relishing the challenge
I’m looking forward to being
able to develop and have a long,
successful career in a very valuable
public service role.
Cadets meet every Tuesday 1900-2200 hours at
Kempston Headquarters. At 18.00 hours, Hannah
meets the drill instructor to discuss anything that
needs attention that week. Cadets will be ready
outside ready for drill and inspection and the
remainder of the evening is classroom based learning
which can be anything from law training to fitness
related elements. There is fun too with annual trips
to Blue Peris in North Wales for an outdoor activity
❝
team building weekend.
Hannah thoroughly enjoys
these, “From rock climbing
and mountain walking to
caving and assault courses,
we do it all. It helps us to
bond, learn where our strengths lie and improve
teamwork.”
The role is a great opportunity for young people who
have an interest in a career with the police. “I would
say read up about the force, talk to other officers,
cadets and specials and find out a bit more about it.
It really is so rewarding and exciting but it takes time,
discipline, dedication and focus. For me, it’s worth it
and I love what I do.”
Recruitment starts in January for September intakes,
DESIGN
fab training for a young team
In 2008, Fabio Pasqualone set up Fab
Designs with the support of his mum,
Tina – their sole aim being to offer to do
all those little jobs the larger contractors
didn’t want to do.
Working out of their garage and offering their
services at a flat day rate during which they would
do all and any job that needed doing proved very
popular and they soon found themselves very much
in demand.
Kitchen – BEFORE
Now in larger premises in Ravensden, Fab Designs is
a family business based on a desire to give people the
absolute best for their money and their honest and
open approach is what really makes them successful.
Experts in taking a budget on any scale and being
able to deliver high quality work, they have even
been known to work to less than the budget –The
kitchen in the photo should have been £5500 and
they supplied and fitted it for just £2000!
With a mainly young team aged 16-26, they believe
in supporting and training young people and fully
qualified joiner, Fabio, has successfully trained
5 apprentices from Bedford College. They offer
support to local charities, often donating pieces
of hand crafted furniture to events and auctions,
supporting causes such as the Radcliffe Hospital
Cranial Facial charity.
They discuss what needs doing with the client and
then work to their needs and budget. Fabio says
“We don’t want to charge people high rates, we
want to source the best materials at cost prices and
pass that saving on to them. We offer the whole
package – from finding and providing the materials
to electrics, plumbing,
painting and tiling. And
we keep to the budget
– if we can’t do it exactly, we
will let them know
what we can do and
offer good design
advice and ideas
along the way.” Mum, Tina has
become an expert on eBay and in
auction rooms, spending a lot of time
hunting down reclaimed, recycled
and second hand materials which they
then collect and recondition if necessary. Sourced
from all over the country, they find exactly what
the client wants and can include all white goods
with dis-counted warranty rates too. Tina says “Not
everything has to be brand new these days, we find
some incredible deals and pieces out there just being
wasted – people throw things away that are great
quality. We use everything even offcuts, nothing is
wasted and the standard we work to is so high, you
would never know the difference.”
Kitchen – AFTER
So, if there is something you have your heart set
on but suspect it’s out of your league, talk to
Fab Designs and they will recreate that kitchen,
bathroom or bedroom to suit any level of budget
without compromising on quality or appearance.
Call Fabio on 07727 157527 or visit
Positive steps to staying healthy
any people come to
‘Mus as a last step –
Healthy Steps is often a first
step to a new future’.
The Volunteer Centre Bedford
has around 50 enquiries a week
from people who want to start
volunteering. A lot of these people
have barriers to employment
for one reason or another. They
may have been out of work for
a while and are losing their confidence,
they may have mental
health problems or learning difficulties
or they could be suffering
with chronic pain due to illness.
Healthy Steps to Employment
is a project run by the Learning
Partnership Bedfordshire and Luton
Ltd. Clients meet a wellbeing
nurse and discuss various special-
ist interventions that would help
them overcome some of their
barriers. Volunteering is one option
they can choose.
We are able to offer 1:1 support
into volunteering. Volunteering
is often just the first step to
a healthier future and can lead
to reduced medication, raised
self-esteem and paid work. The
funding allows us to spend time
talking to the potential volunteer,
really getting to know who they
are, what their barriers are and
what they want to achieve. We
will go along to voluntary placements
with them and ensure that
everything is in place for them to
have a really excellent volunteering
experience. We are with them
all the way and often end up becoming
good friends.
This program is open to people
who live right across Bedfordshire.
We’ve had two very long, hard
winters and birds struggle to
survive in these conditions. We
can all do our bit to help them
through the tough times ahead
by providing food and water, and
doing so right through the winter
when natural food becomes
scarcer and harder to find.
Watching birds coming into
the garden to feed is absorbing
- and can become very addictive!
They bring colour and endless
entertainment, but also a great
deal of skill. Spend some time
watching the way each bird deals
with the seeds and nuts they feed
on, they are all adapted to eat
them differently.
Berries are an important food
source for many birds during
the winter, especially when the
ground is too frozen to hunt
Winter
Garden Birds
While we are warm and cosy and tucked up from the
cold and icy winter weather outside, it’s the time to
think about the birds that depend on our gardens at this
time of year.
Fieldfare
worms or snails, and there are few
insects about.
Some birds, like song and mistle
thrushes, blackbirds, redwings
and fieldfares, find most of their
winter food from berries. Take
care, though: some berries that
are tasty treats for birds are
poisonous to humans!
Berry bearing trees
The winter is a good time to
consider planting fruit and berry
bearing trees or bushes in the
garden. As well as the many native
berry-bearing species (including
rowan, holly, whitebeam, spindle,
dog rose, guelder rose, elder,
hawthorn, honeysuckle and ivy),
attractive shrubs like cotoneaster,
pyracantha and berberis are
especially good for a wide range
of birds.
Berry and fruit bearing trees
provide food for a range of insects
and animals too: hedgehogs,
badgers, mice, squirrels and
even foxes will all happily feed
on them. All sorts of fruit are
attractive to insects, and if you
leave them where they fall in the
late summer and autumn they
will attract numerous butterflies
to their syrupy goodness.
Here at the RSPB we often get
enquiries about unusual birds
that are seen in gardens during
hard spells of weather. Winter
thrushes such as redwings and
Waxwing
WILDLIFE
fieldfare, normally very shy birds,
will venture into your gardens,
particularly if you provide fallen
fruit or your bushes still have
berries on them. Even more
exciting is when we have an
invasion year for a particularly
handsome bird called the
waxwing.These birds migrate
south from Scandinavia and
the far north when supplies of
berries run out in these countries.
In some years they are hardly
seen at all, but in others, large
numbers reach Western Europeand
this looks like one of those
years! As I write, waxwings are
being reported across the land,
from the Shetlands to Cornwall,
so there’s a good chance we’ll
get some in our area. One place
where they do turn up regularly is
in Supermarket car –parks; they
often have rowan and ornamental
trees with lots of juicy berries on,
perfect for feeding waxwings!
Enjoy watching the birds in your
garden this winter, and feel good
knowing that you are Stepping
Up For Nature by helping them
survive the winter.
can be very difficult for
pet owners (and vets!) to
know whether an animal
should be seen straight away
or whether it can wait until
normal surgery hours.
Subtle differences can be
significant in an emergency
situation so it is always best to call
for advice.
Only administer
prescribed medicines
Pet insurance is advised so the
cost of emergency treatment can
be covered as it can be expensive.
Paracetamol can be fatal to your
pet so never give medication
which has not been prescribed for
your animal.
The following problems should
always been seen straight away:
• Blue, white or very pale gums
• Laboured breathing
• Fitting, Collapse or loss of
consciousness
• Dizziness, imbalance, or circling
• Extremely bloated abdomen Signs
of severe pain- crying loudly and
excessively
• If your pet has been involved in a
Road Traffic Accident – sometimes
injuries may not be very obvious.
• Any cat which is straining to pass
urine or not able to pass urine.
• Difficulty giving birth
• Suspected poisoning – if you can,
bring the label or name of the
suspected poison.
Acorn House has a 24 hour
emergency service on site and
there is always a vet available for
free emergency advice to help
decide if your pet should be seen
and a nurse to ensure animals are
checked overnight and not left
alone for long periods of time.
