TRANSPORT
From the airport —— A taxi from the airport
to the city centre costs about € 35.
Cheaper is the City Airport Train – CAT.
It takes about 16 minutes to the city centre,
and a ticket costs € 9. Buses to different
destinations in town take about
35 minutes, a ticket costs € 6. A ticket
for the S-Bahn (rapid train) is € 3.40.
Taxis —— Prices for taxis are quite reasonable.
Calling for a taxi is an additional
€ 2. Taxis: 60 160, 31 300 or 40
100
Public transport —— You can usually buy
tickets at the machines and kiosks in the
metro and railway stations, at the
tobacco stores (newsagents) and in the
trams and buses. Normal price for a
ticket is € 1.70 (€ 2.20 when purchased
inside a bus or tram). Changes are
allowed. A ticket for a week is € 14, for
three days not much cheaper: € 13.60,
48hours: € 10 and 24hours: € 5.70. Ask
for the so-called Vienna Card for three
days (€ 18.50) that offers discounts for
some museums, restaurants and shops.
Night buses run every half hour along
the main routes, make sure that your
ticket is valid for them. Check out more
discounts, routes and special offers at:
www.wienerlinien.at
Car —— In town, the main speed is usually
50 km/h, unless otherwise indicated.
On highways, the limit is 130
km/h. Alcohol tolerance is 0.5. Viennese
driving mood can be considered
moderate and easy going. Many areas
of the first district are pedestrian zones.
You can buy parking tickets at tobacco
stores (tabak), gas stations and some
groceries. Times to pay for parking are
usually 9 am to 10 pm during the week.
In some areas, like around the Stadt -
halle, payment is until 11 pm. Regular
parking time is 2 hours, a ticket costs
€ 2.50.
Bike —— A fine alternative for mobility
in Vienna is a bike, but mind the daily
business traffic. At 60 stations in town
you can rent and return a »city bike«,
no matter where your point of origin.
You have to register with Visa, JBC or
Mastercard at one of the bike kiosks
before you can rent. 1 hour is free, the
2nd: € 1, 3rd: € 2, 4th: € 4, max. 120
hours.
