Kirche am Steinhof (Church at Steinhof) —
— This trip doesn’t need a whole day,
but certainly a couple of hours. This
impressive church was built between
1904 and 1907 by Otto Wagner, who
had been commissioned to construct it
as a sacral building for the lunatic asylum
at Baumgartner Höhe. That is why
there are emergency exits, a doctor’s
room, hygienic facilities and no sharp
edges. It is supposed to be one of the
main architectonic achievements of
Viennese Jugendstil, resembling the
Secession on the Karlsplatz. Distinctive
elements of the church are the golden
cupola in the Byzantine style, a golden
altar in the style of a holy grave and the
mosaic glass paintings by Koloman
Moser.
