Here, Freud developed his
revolutionary theory about psychoanalysis.
One can see, aside from a few
memorabilia and documents about
Freud’s life, works from the Sigmund
Freud Museum Contemporary Art Collection,
which consists of donations of
art works that cover the topic psychoanalysis
in various forms (among others:
Pierpaolo Calzolari, Georg Herold,
Jenny Holzer, Ilya Kabakov or Franz
West).
 Schneekugelmuseum (Snow Globe
Museum) —— The snow globe museum
is located in the »Schneekugelmanufaktur«,
a family-run company that has
existed since 1900. Here one can find
all different shapes and fillings of the
original snow globe, produced of course
by hand. Do you remember the opening
scene of the film Citizen Kane? The
Rosebud-snow globe was manufactured
here. In this small museum, handicraft,
art and kitsch balance each other out.
 Narrenturm (Madhouse Tower) —— Be
aware that the Narrenturm is one of the
world’s biggest pathological museums,
not a freak show. The »tower of fools«
was built in 1784 under the reign of Em-
SPIKE ART GUIDE EAST 01 — 2009 Vienna
peror Joseph II as one of the first psychiatric
clinics in history. Rumour has
it that this haunting tower with its
fortress-like architecture was constructed
under the principles of freemasonry.
The Narrenturm contains scientific
examples of diseases, deformations
and cripplings, thousands of formaldehyde-exhibits
and »moulages« (a special
wax-technique for conservation),
which give a special insight into the history
of medicine. (And sometimes a
shivering feeling á la Cronenberg’s
films.)
 Stadionbad (Stadium pool) —— An
open air swimming area in the green
setting of the Prater Park with an exciting
history: The Stadionbad was inaugurated
in 1931 during the second
Workers Olympic Games in the high
times of »red« Vienna. It was used as a
centre for the then internationally
highly acclaimed Jewish sports club
»Hakoah« and was totally destroyed after
a bombing in 1945. Nowadays, the
Stadionbad with its 150.000m² swimming
facilities is one of the largest public
baths in Europe.
