�� Galerie Nächst St. Stephan —— A
gallery with a long tradition. The gallery
has been on the same spot since 1920,
under this name since Monsignor Otto
Mauer opened it in 1954 after the Second
World War. The avant-garde from
Joseph Beuys to Arnulf Rainer found a
place here. Under the direction of
artist Oswald Oberhuber, the gallery
acquired the role of »information platform«
in the ’70s in that it informed the
scene about classic Modern and contemporary
art. In 1978, Rosemarie
Schwarzwälder took control and concentrated
primarily on minimalism,
abstraction and conceptual art, showing
works by Helmut Federle, Imi
Knoebel and Ernst Caramelle. For the
past few years, the gallery has supported
successful Polish artists Adam Adach,
Agnieska Kalinowska and Aneta
Grzeszykowska.

�� Galerie Krinzinger —— In busi ness
since the ’70s, today Ursula Krin zinger
still attends every important art fair in
the world. Originally the gallery was engaged
in Vienna Actionism (Brus,
Muehl, Schwarzkogler), then focused
on international performance and body
related art including stars from the
American West coast like Chris Burden
or Nancy Rubins, and from Austria
SPIKE ART GUIDE EAST 01 — 2009 Vienna
Erwin Wurm. Krinzinger recognized
the value of the German »enfant terrible«
Jonathan Meese early on. Recently
she shows more work by contemporary
artists from China and India like Zhang
Ding and Sudarshan Shetty. The gallery
space alone is worth a visit because of
its dignified, historical ambiance

This gallery was grounded by Emanuel
Layr und Thomas Wüstenhagen in
2002; in the meantime it has become
successful at international art fairs. They
represent only young artists like the
painter Tillman Kaiser, Fabain Seiz or
the artists’ collective mahony, and cre-
ate exciting curatorial projects outside
of the gallery. Ateliers and residencies
are available for artists and curators.
This is one of the meeting place for the
young art scene.
