ULTRASONIC CLEANING
IWG offers special designed Ultrasonic Cleaning solutions. Ultrasonic
Cleaning is important to dissolve and suspend contaminants. While
metal surfaces are inhibited to protect the parts from etching, oils and
greases are saponified and metal ions are complexed.
DEGREASING
The degreasing process is important for an optimal preparation
of the parts before electroplating.
IWG recommends “Degreasing 1018” - especially for fine
jewelry and costume jewelry.
TYPES
PLATING
PLATINUM
PROPERTIES
Platinum is a metal with a beautiful silvery-white surface. It is exceptional
because of its ductility. Platinum is resistant against wear and tarnishing and
therefore particularly suitable for fine jewelry.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BATH
• white bright surface
• easy handling in terms of plating bathes
• the electrolytes have an excellent throwing power so an even
thickness can be reached over a wide range of current densities
which leads to a reduction of costs
• the electrolyte has an outstanding fast covering force to protect the base
material from etching
• replenishable
• Vickers hardness 350-500
RHODIUM
PROPERTIES
Rhodium is a silver-white metallic element, which is highly resistant against
corrosion and highly brilliant.
It is an extremely rare precious metal and one of the most expensive in its
range.
Because of its extraordinary high brilliance rhodium is applied for top coating
of various pieces of jewelry.
Rhodium is also used as corrosion protection for silver. In general, rhodium is
darker than silver. Therefore rhodium has to be as white as possible to look
as similar as silver. IWG rhodium solutions are incomparable in colour and
brightness.
IWG offers a wide range of different plating solutions.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BATH
• highly brilliant, bright and white coating
• easy handling in terms of plating bathes
• good throwing power
• high hardness
• high corrosion resistance
• replenishable by rhodium replenishment concentrate
• Vickers hardness 800-900
PALLADIUM
PROPERTIES
Palladium is a silvery, bright, lustrous and ductile metal, slightly harder than
Platinum.
The Vickers hardness of palladium as a galvanic coat is HV 230 – 250.
Expanding its crystal lattice, palladium is capable of absorbing hydrogen at a
rate of 350 - 380 times of its own volume, in colloidal solution even up to approx.
3000 times of its volume (at normal temperature). Thin palladium sheets
are permeable to H2, but they will swell notably, becoming brittle. Therefore, the
electroplating process must suppress this property of palladium.
Palladium is used as a corrosion protection or diffusion barrier as a substitute
for nickel. It is very often used as layer underneath rhodium. Palladiums abrasion
resistance is exceptional.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BATH
• white colour
• exceptional corrosion resistance
• neutral pH
• easy handling in terms of plating bathes
• replenishable
• Vickers hardness 230-250
Pd Gapal FS Pd Gapal HT
TYPES
• PALLADIUM GAPAL FS
The pure palladium process Gapal FS is a weak alkaline electrolyte from which
bright decorative white pure palladium layers can be deposited. Layers of Gapal
FS can be used up to about 0,5 µ as a diffusion barrier or as a flash palladium
in the bijou and optical frame production.
CHARACTERISTICS
• easy to control
• Palladium content of the electrolyte is only 2 g/l
• pure palladium can be deposited, no alloying metals as brighteners
• substitute for nickel as diffusion barrier
• Palladium is not sensitising
• PALLADIUM GAPAL HT
The pure palladium process Gapal HT is a weak alkaline electrolyte from which
bright, decorative white-levelled pure palladium layers can be deposited. Gapal
HT has been formulated to get crack free and non-porous layers. Gapal HT
enables deposits of thicknesses above 5 microns with mirror bright finish that
is the reason why it can be used as an excellent corrosion protective nickel
substitute.
CHARACTERISTICS
• very white layers can be deposited
• layers are free of cracks
• bright deposits up to 5 µ are possible
• pure palladium can be deposited, no alloying metals as brighteners
• substitute for nickel as diffusion barrier
• Palladium is not sensitising
SILVER
PROPERTIES
Pure silver has a brilliant white metallic glance. The metal is a little harder than
gold and very ductile and malleable. Pure silver has the highest electrical and
thermal conductivity of all metals, and possesses the lowest contact resistance.
Silver is stable in pure air and water, but tarnishes when exposed to ozone,
hydrogen sulphide, or air containing sulphur.
Silver plating is one of the oldest applications of galvano technique. The first
patents of these applications were noted in 1838 and 1840.
GOLD
PROPERTIES
Gold is a yellow, brilliant, highly malleable and extremely durable precious metal.
Gold and copper are the only coloured metals.
Naturally, the colour is an important characteristic of a gold layer.
Various gold colours are required for decorative applications, which are created
by employing alloy partners with a sometimes considerable weight percentage.
Care must be taken that the corrosion resistance and colour consistency are
compromised.
IWG has developed a special system of baths for fine jewelry:
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BATH
• deposits with constant colour
• hard gold coating
• thickness of the deposit up to 0,2 µ
• easy handling in terms of plating bathes
• good macrothrowing power of the electrolyte
• high fineness (more than 18 carats)
