Redefining Your Goals<br />

Often times, our fitness goals resemble something like this: “I<br />

want to lose 20 lb by June 1st”, or “I want to feel good in my<br />

bikini this summer,” or “I want to be a size 5” or “I want to run<br />

a marathon”. . . etc. These goals could be described as an end<br />

result to some hard work, or outcome based goals.<br />

But let’s imagine for a moment that we might be better off<br />

focusing on the process instead of the end goal itself.<br />

Consider this list of behavioural goals:<br />

• I will do 30 min of cardio 3 times a week.<br />

• I will do 2 sets of 12-15 reps. of strength training 3 times<br />

per week.<br />

• I will stretch all worked muscle groups after each work out.<br />

• I will eat breakfast.<br />

• I will eat vegetables with every meal, and eat every<br />

3 to 4 hours.<br />

This list not only focuses on the process for reaching your end goal,<br />

but it is also a scheme for changing your lifestyle. There are plenty<br />

of fad diets and extreme exercise regimens that could quickly get<br />

you where you’d like to be, however these often fail the moment you<br />

tire of the strict practice, sending you back to the beginning again.<br />

On the other hand, we know that adhering to small lifestyle changes<br />

will produce long term results, by simply becoming the normal way<br />

you conduct your life. By focusing on a behavioural goal, as in the<br />

examples above, you also get immediate satisfaction from fulfilling<br />

it. Unlike the elusive image of a future gorgeous bikini body on the<br />

beach, these simple tasks are actual and real tasks you can easily<br />

accomplish today. While keeping your long-term goal suspended in<br />

your mind’s eye, completing smaller behaviour goals should be your<br />

primary focus. Soon you might find you’ve arrived at your desired<br />

outcome i.e. the bikini body, but now you have the tools and the<br />

tendency to maintain this position.<br />
