Active Listening Has Its Limits ...
By Kelly Musselwhite
I do not consider myself a political person. I am a philosopher
who focuses on the love and pursuit of wisdom through
intellectual and methodological means. Holistic consideration
is my fundamental goal for it was my generation who were
raised in a be seen and not heard environment. That’s just the
way things were but not necessarily how they ought to be.
Several months ago the issue of the Eco Depot came up in local
conversation. Interested, I made my way to one of the first rallies
held at Ingram Street and so my education began. I had received
and read the literature put out by the CVRD but something didn’t
jive. What was the fuss about? Isn’t an Eco Depot a green idea? Isn’t
that a good thing?
They say power is knowledge but there are always several
perspectives to consider. As such, I started attended the CVRD Board of
Director’s Meetings in balance with information sessions administered
by the resistors. I read the paper, kept track of the number of emotionally
driven, yet intelligent articles appearing in our newspapers, and even
wrote a couple myself. I was becoming political.
What have I concluded? The proposed Eco Depot is not
‘wrong’ conceptually, yet is completely unethical for a diversity of
other reasons, many of which are reflected when critically analyzing
the three websites currently available to the public: the CVRD’s
ecodepotfacts.ca and those in opposition’s ecodepotfacts.com and
saynotodump.ca.
I fear that the public are not fully aware of this local debate
and I invite you to investigate yourselves.
As an autonomous adult, I am determined to be seen and
heard, yet my understanding is that both require being met with eyes
that see and ears that listen. Sorrowfully, it appears that the CVRD
Director’s have neither when it comes to the Eco Depot.
