Children and Dogs
By Lisbeth Plant KPACTP
Kids and dogs can be the best buddies – or, it can be the
worst chaos! As parents, we can do a lot to foster a loving
relationship through Supervision and Education.
Every year, 2.8 million children suffer dog bites in the USA (cf.
3.5M are injured during sports and recreational activities). Kids
5-9 years old are most at risk, and boys twice as much as girls.
Most bites are from a dog belonging to family or friends, not pit
bulls on the rampage. Most bites are caused by lack of supervision
and misunderstandings between child and dog. Humans and
canines do not necessarily understand each other’s language. As
busy parents, we may not be able to keep up-to-date with the latest
research on dogs.
Make sure that the dog can escape when the game gets
too much for him and that he has a safe place where the children
understand that they must leave him alone. Supervise!
Many dogs tolerate manhandling; very few enjoy it. Dogs do
not like hugs and kisses! Oh, I know, your dog does. Please take
another look? When your child hugs your dog, do his ears hang
down, does he turn sideways, lick his lips, yawn, blink, pant or even
freeze? These are signs of stress that mean “I’m really uncomfortable
right now.” The freeze is a pre-bite warning! Dogs can learn to
tolerate hugs, but to most, hugging is a rude restraint.
Kisses can cause a bite to the face. When the preceding
“Please, don’t!” signals were not understood, the dog may put teeth
on skin to say “NO!”. Such a bite warning would be fine on another
dog or puppy, but a child has no fur to protect her sensitive skin.
Demonstrate correct behaviour to your children and teach
them that In our family, we are kind to animals. Ask you trainer for
more information or go to www.doggonesafe.com.
Supervise! Never leave children alone with a dog. Never!
