welcome . . .
. . . to the April issue of the South Cowichan Life. We are looking forward to the first long
weekend of the year at Easter and can’t wait for more settled weather to get out and about in
the great outdoors.
In our communities many hours are spent by volunteers who raise money to make
improvements that benefit us all. Take the LakeBayHill Auxiliary – they will be raising funds
at their annual Lemon and Lavender Tea on 17 April from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Mill Bay
Community Hall for health care equipment at the Cowichan District Hospital. On Saturday 23
April at the Mill Bay Centre the South Cowichan Rotary Club will host an Easter Egg Hunt led
by the Easter Bunny. Meet outside Thrifty Foods at 10:00am make sure you bring a basket to
collect some delectable chocolate eggs.
Did you know that the Spot Prawn is one of seven commercial species of shrimp found in our
West coast waters? The body colour is usually reddish brown with distinctive white spots and
the large females can sometimes exceed 9 inches in total length. The spot prawn is known for
its sweet, delicate flavor and firm flesh. That’s why Cowichan Bay is celebrating the third annual
Spot Prawn Festival on 15 May with chef demonstrations, sampling, music and sales fresh off
the boats. Environmentally sound and locally sourced – you can’t get better than that!
Once again we have the ever popular word search competition on page 6. Entrants must be
19 years and over to win and Mill Bay Centre has an Easter Basket draw - entry form on page
13. Also, throughout the magazine there are discount coupons and special offers from our
advertisers. Life is good in the South Cowichan Valley. Enjoy!
From the Team at The Cowichan Press.
