Mill Bay Garden Club<br />

The weather for the winter of 2010/2011 has held some elements<br />
that roses don’t like. Two fairly short but deep bouts of frost in<br />
November and March caught many plants off guard – Roses<br />
particularly. Roses these days are hardier than they used to be as<br />
hybridizers continue to create more disease-free and hardy plants.<br />
Roses are the type of plant that really benefit from a careful but fairly<br />
severe pruning – particularly established plants.<br />

Bernie Dinter from Dinter’s<br />
Nursery will be speaking on lawn<br />
care on April 26. We haven’t<br />
addressed this topic for years<br />
and Bernie is a popular, extremely knowledgeable speaker.<br />
It’s bound to be a packed house.<br />
Member Dustin Carlson presented a superb workshop in his<br />
garden on Cultivating Mushrooms with many members going home<br />
with logs and sawdust culture inoculated with mushroom spawn of<br />
several varieties. It was an outstanding learning experience for our<br />
members and we are grateful to Dustin for sharing his expertise.<br />
Our 64th Annual Community Flower and Garden Show will<br />
take place on June 11, 2011 and our volunteer team is full speed<br />
ahead putting together a fabulous day for gardening enthusiasts at<br />
all levels. We are introducing a photo contest of garden subjects that<br />
we hope will inspire community members to enter.<br />
We meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Mill Bay<br />
Community Hall next to the Kerry Park Recreation Centre. We<br />
get started around 6:30 p.m. to allow for set up, library visits,<br />
networking, plant buying, Brag Table entry set-up, etc. and we<br />
are generally finished around 8:45 p.m. after the guest speaker<br />
concludes.<br />
Our Club offers education, networking, helpful assistance and<br />
fun! Gardeners and would be-gardeners at all levels are warmly<br />
