PLEASE MENTION THE SOUTH COWICHAN LIFE MAGAZINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS Mill Bay Fire Department By Joanne Nelson Brrrr, gorgeous looking snow, bringing frustration, power outages, danger on the roads and icy surfaces. Indoors if you have a fireplace, just a reminder, you are bringing fire into your home. Respect it, always use a fireplace screen to stop sparks, and do not store newspapers, kindling or matches near the fireplace. Remove rugs or cover wood floors with fire resistant bricks or rock. Place fire resistant or rocks directly in front of the fireplace and under it if it is free standing. After an incident, access to a site may be restricted considering structural integrity or investigation into the cause. Our Firefighters do everything they can to ensure an area is safe before leaving an incident. Please use this analogy for your own peace of mind in keeping your home and surroundings safe so that Emergency personnel are not required. On occasion a crime investigation is required and a scene must be preserved whilst evidence is gathered. After leaving an incident, the firefighters must return to the Fire Hall, ensure their equipment is clean and all traces of harmful chemicals removed. I will elaborate on debriefings in my next article. Consider joining our team as an integral volunteer in our Community. It is good to know that there are still some people who want to become a firefighter regardless of status or monetary gain. The first requirement is that you do not have a criminal record. The personal attributes that are considered are; determination, confidence, flexibility, positive outlook, ability to communicate well, and integrity. Being a volunteer firefighter requires a significant commitment of your time to both train and respond to emergency incidents. Your safety and that of your fellow firefighters, and the public, depends on the skills you will learn and more importantly maintain and improve. Volunteer Firefighters are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including holidays). Consider the gratification of becoming a firefighter capable of responding to fire incidents, saving properties and especially lives. If you are over 19, a resident of or work in Mill Bay, Cobble Hill or Arbutus Ridge, consider volunteering at least three or more hours per week, in support of your Community. The Firefighters symbolize total dedication and we are very proud of their commitment to our community. Our Department has twenty nine firefighters, a Dispatcher and four Auxiliary members. Our new uniforms are coming in the near future. DiD You Know?
