welcome . . .
. . . to the April issue of the South Cowichan Life. We are looking forward to the first long
weekend of the year at Easter and can’t wait for more settled weather to get out and about in
the great outdoors.
In our communities many hours are spent by volunteers who raise money to make
improvements that benefit us all. Take the LakeBayHill Auxiliary – they will be raising funds
at their annual Lemon and Lavender Tea on 17 April from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Mill Bay
Community Hall for health care equipment at the Cowichan District Hospital. On Saturday 23
April at the Mill Bay Centre the South Cowichan Rotary Club will host an Easter Egg Hunt led
by the Easter Bunny. Meet outside Thrifty Foods at 10:00am make sure you bring a basket to
collect some delectable chocolate eggs.
Did you know that the Spot Prawn is one of seven commercial species of shrimp found in our
West coast waters? The body colour is usually reddish brown with distinctive white spots and
the large females can sometimes exceed 9 inches in total length. The spot prawn is known for
its sweet, delicate flavor and firm flesh. That’s why Cowichan Bay is celebrating the third annual
Spot Prawn Festival on 15 May with chef demonstrations, sampling, music and sales fresh off
the boats. Environmentally sound and locally sourced – you can’t get better than that!
Once again we have the ever popular word search competition on page 6. Entrants must be
19 years and over to win and Mill Bay Centre has an Easter Basket draw - entry form on page
13. Also, throughout the magazine there are discount coupons and special offers from our
advertisers. Life is good in the South Cowichan Valley. Enjoy!
Active Listening Has Its Limits ...
By Kelly Musselwhite
I do not consider myself a political person. I am a philosopher
who focuses on the love and pursuit of wisdom through
intellectual and methodological means. Holistic consideration
is my fundamental goal for it was my generation who were
raised in a be seen and not heard environment. That’s just the
way things were but not necessarily how they ought to be.
Several months ago the issue of the Eco Depot came up in local
conversation. Interested, I made my way to one of the first rallies
held at Ingram Street and so my education began. I had received
and read the literature put out by the CVRD but something didn’t
jive. What was the fuss about? Isn’t an Eco Depot a green idea? Isn’t
that a good thing?
They say power is knowledge but there are always several
perspectives to consider. As such, I started attended the CVRD Board of
Director’s Meetings in balance with information sessions administered
by the resistors. I read the paper, kept track of the number of emotionally
driven, yet intelligent articles appearing in our newspapers, and even
wrote a couple myself. I was becoming political.
What have I concluded? The proposed Eco Depot is not
‘wrong’ conceptually, yet is completely unethical for a diversity of
other reasons, many of which are reflected when critically analyzing
the three websites currently available to the public: the CVRD’s
ecodepotfacts.ca and those in opposition’s ecodepotfacts.com and
saynotodump.ca.
I fear that the public are not fully aware of this local debate
and I invite you to investigate yourselves.
As an autonomous adult, I am determined to be seen and
heard, yet my understanding is that both require being met with eyes
that see and ears that listen. Sorrowfully, it appears that the CVRD
Director’s have neither when it comes to the Eco Depot.
debbie
Both had lived in Calgary for
many years, where they met,
married and started a family.
Brian grew up in the Prairies
farming, Debbie was raised and
schooled in Victoria. Married for
10 years, seeing that the pace was
only getting faster in the city, they
decided to move the family to the
Island. Debbie’s dad had bought
a log cabin on Shawnigan Lake in
1966, where the family spent many
summers, weekends and holidays.
This is where the love for country
life originated.
Debbie worked with Mary Kay
Cosmetics for 15 years in Calgary,
loved it, and loved working with
people, however, once on the
Island it was time for a change. Her
youngest son Brandon, at 4 years
old was constantly sick, finally a
year he later was diagnosed with
Asthma, after many trips to the
hospital and many prescriptions. In
that time Debbie could not work, as
her son was home sick 2 to 3 days
per week. Having to partially home
school him and take him to many
appoinments for testing, doctors,
dietitians, etc.Not understanding
why or what was triggering him,
she was determined to get to the
bottom of his health problems. Her
other son had severe allergies and
her husband owned an Autobody
Shop, so basically a toxic family!
This is why she studied health
and well being using supplements,
natural herbal products, and
energy work.
Reiki Wellness
7 Years in the Cowichan Valley – Making a Difference
Debbie Shkuratoff and husband Brian had settled in the Valley in 1991 to
live a peaceful lifestyle and raise their boys.
Cathy Simons CNC, introduced
her to healthy alternatives, Reiki
and many other gifted people along
the way.
The next few years took on a life
of it’s own. Taking Reiki classes,
other energy and health classes, and
meeting many gifted teachers. Debbie
has taken five different styles of Reiki
– Usui, Karuna, Komyo, Secheim,
Tibetian. She has completed the
Reiki Master level in each style and
has tudied with William Lee Rand
of The Internationl Reiki Centre,
Yukatan Sensei from Japan. Took
a workshop with Hawayo Takata’s
grandaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto,
the Grandmaster of the Reiki
Alliance. All authentic teachers.
While studying Reiki, Debbie opened
her home for classes and treatments.
Then decided to open Reiki Wellness
at Valleyview Centre in 2004, offering
Reiki sessions, EMF Balancing
Technique sessions ( Advanced
Practitioner I-IV ) and Reiki classes,
teaching all levels. Using the energy
work for balancing the mind, body,
soul and spirit, she realized there
was the physical piece missing, so
in 2005 she took training for the
Detoxifying Foot Spas, brought in
the Infrared Therapies, which are all
very important in maintaining good
health.
Reiki Wellness has added nutritional
suppliments, and is using the Zyto
Compass Bio Feedback Assessment
System. Debbie continues her
Nutritional studies and Health classes
with Lorene Benoit and Associates.
Lorene is a Master Herbalist of
thirty years. Soon other practitioners
were brought in, offering therapies
such as Craniosacral, Ortho-
Bionomy, Reflexology, and various
styles of massage for relaxation
and pampering.
Two years ago, Kangen Water, a
Japanese Technology that is amazing
was brought to the Wellness Centre.
Good, clean ionized water is needed
“I am always looking for the best
products to work with. Over the
years I have seen first hand that all
of these pieces work together on all
levels to have a healthy mind, body
Glimpses of Our Past
Slow But Steady
A driving trip to and from Victoria in the 1920s could be a hair raising
adventure. So in November 1924 two former naval officers, Kennaird
and Williams found a way to bypass the road by transporting vehicles
across Saanich Inlet.
They converted the 22 year old 90 foot coastal tramp steamer
Cascade, to allow vehicles to drive on bow and stern and
renamed her the Brentwood. Terminals were established about
10 metres south of the present dock at Brentwood and north of
the present dock at Mill Bay.
So much for an auspicious start, only a month after she began
this route the new ferry sank at her Brentwood dock. It was a
hard winter and Brentwood Bay had frozen over, while trying
to break through, the ice opened the seams in the wooden hull.
However she was quickly repaired and soon back on the job
In 1956 a new ferry called the Mill Bay was added and for two
years, the 54-year old Brentwood and the new Mill Bay operated
side by side providing half-hour service from both sides across
Saanich Inlet
In 1958 the Malahat Highway was improved and the Brentwood
was retired, leaving the Mill Bay to operate the route alone for
the next 52 years.
STORY
I’m sure many of you have travelled on the Mill Bay Ferry and
there’s a good chance that the vehicle you drive onto this ferry
with will have a bigger engine than the ferry itself
The Mill Bay is powered by one 8 cylinder engine producing
152 horsepower (less than many yachts and pleasure boats and
many of the cars it carries!).
Since the Mill Bay is so small, only carrying 18 cars, the docks
at each side are especially designed to accommodate the ferry,
meaning no other BC Ferry can replace her when she is out for
repairs or refit.
With 86 years and counting this route is “the oldest continuously
operated salt water ferry service in all of British Columbia.” It
also stands out as having the smallest and oldest ferry in the BC
Ferries fleet.

The ABCs of PDFs
By Jeff Wright
PDF stands for Portable Document Format. PDF files are, for the
most part, read-only documents that preserve document formatting,
including fonts and graphics, across many platforms. Simply put, it’s
a great way to send documents to a variety of recipients because it
will be readable on their computers, and look just as you created it,
regardless of the hardware or software owned by your recipient. As
well, the read-only aspect of PDFs discourages plagiarism.
The concept of PDF was introduced in 1991 by the co-founder
of Adobe Systems, John Warnock. The idea was to sell software to
create PDFs, but offer free software to read PDFs. (Incidentally, the
PDF format was proprietary before it became an open standard on
01 Jul 2008.)
Now, let’s get down to the 3 basics of PDFs: How can one
read, create, and edit a PDF document?
Of the three, reading a PDF is usually the easiest. Most
computers already have a PDF reader installed, so reading a PDF
document on your computer or online can be as simple as clicking
on it. If you don’t have a PDF reader installed, you can get any
one of a number of them for free. Adobe Reader (formerly Adobe
Acrobat) is the most common.
Creating a PDF used to require a separate $600 piece of
software from Adobe, but now there are many built-in, free, or
inexpensive options. Some software products (e.g. Adobe products,
Microsoft Office, OpenOffice) allow you to simply save as PDF.
Add-on tools are typically inexpensive (or free) and very easy to
use: you install it like a printer driver so to create a PDF from your
favourite program you simply hit print, choose the PDF printer from
your printer list, and tell it the name and location to save to. One
very popular PDF writer add-on product is CutePDF.
John 2nd Generation
Arnold Janitor Call for an appointment
Editing a PDF is now possible.
Although this (unfortunately) kills
the read-only aspect of PDFs we
once had, it does give us increased
flexibility. For one, you can fill out
PDF forms electronically instead of
printing them and filling them out by
hand. Editing a PDF can be tricky,
but you have several options ranging
from free to $150. One totally free
option is available at pdftoword.
com: for $0.00, you submit a PDF, and it will email it back to you,
converted to DOC (Microsoft Word) or RTF (Rich Text Format). There
are free trials of full-blown PDF software packages like Nitro PDF
and Foxit that are typically about $100 once the trial ends. Adobe
now offers their Professional package for $449, but I’m not sure why
. . . with all the other available options.
Note: All of the free, trial, and paid PDF tools mentioned in this
article are available from download.com.
Redefining Your Goals
By Jody Carlson
Often times, our fitness goals resemble something like this: “I
want to lose 20 lb by June 1st”, or “I want to feel good in my
bikini this summer,” or “I want to be a size 5” or “I want to run
a marathon”. . . etc. These goals could be described as an end
result to some hard work, or outcome based goals.
But let’s imagine for a moment that we might be better off
focusing on the process instead of the end goal itself.
Consider this list of behavioural goals:
• I will do 30 min of cardio 3 times a week.
• I will do 2 sets of 12-15 reps. of strength training 3 times
per week.
• I will stretch all worked muscle groups after each work out.
• I will eat breakfast.
• Wood Doors
• Wood Windows
• Repairs to all types of
Doors & Windows
Quality since 1976
250-743-4011
www.kwdoorsandwindows.com
Heritage Homes a Speciality
• I will eat vegetables with every meal, and eat every
3 to 4 hours.
This list not only focuses on the process for reaching your end goal,
but it is also a scheme for changing your lifestyle. There are plenty
of fad diets and extreme exercise regimens that could quickly get
you where you’d like to be, however these often fail the moment you
tire of the strict practice, sending you back to the beginning again.
On the other hand, we know that adhering to small lifestyle changes
will produce long term results, by simply becoming the normal way
you conduct your life. By focusing on a behavioural goal, as in the
examples above, you also get immediate satisfaction from fulfilling
it. Unlike the elusive image of a future gorgeous bikini body on the
beach, these simple tasks are actual and real tasks you can easily
accomplish today. While keeping your long-term goal suspended in
your mind’s eye, completing smaller behaviour goals should be your
primary focus. Soon you might find you’ve arrived at your desired
outcome i.e. the bikini body, but now you have the tools and the
tendency to maintain this position.
Fire
Department
By Joanne Nelson
Brrrr, gorgeous looking snow, bringing
frustration, power outages, danger on the
roads and icy surfaces.
Indoors if you have a fireplace, just a reminder, you are
bringing fire into your home. Respect it, always use a fireplace
screen to stop sparks, and do not store newspapers, kindling or
matches near the fireplace. Remove rugs or cover wood floors with
fire resistant bricks or rock. Place fire resistant or rocks directly in
front of the fireplace and under it if it is free standing.
After an incident, access to a site may be restricted considering
structural integrity or investigation into the cause. Our Firefighters
do everything they can to ensure an area is safe before leaving
an incident. Please use this analogy for your own peace of mind
in keeping your home and surroundings safe so that Emergency
personnel are not required.
On occasion a crime investigation is required and a scene must
be preserved whilst evidence is gathered. After leaving an incident,
the firefighters must return to the Fire Hall, ensure their equipment is
clean and all traces of harmful chemicals removed. I will elaborate
on debriefings in my next article.
Consider joining our team as an integral volunteer in our
Community. It is good to know that there are still some people who
want to become a firefighter regardless of status or monetary gain.
The first requirement is that you do not have a criminal record.
The personal attributes that are considered are; determination,
confidence, flexibility, positive outlook, ability to communicate well,
and integrity.
Being a volunteer firefighter requires a significant commitment
of your time to both train and respond to emergency incidents. Your
safety and that of your fellow firefighters, and the public, depends on
the skills you will learn and more importantly maintain and improve.
Volunteer Firefighters are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
(including holidays).
Consider the gratification of becoming a firefighter capable of
responding to fire incidents, saving properties and especially lives.
If you are over 19, a resident of or work in Mill Bay, Cobble Hill or
Arbutus Ridge, consider volunteering at least three or more hours
per week, in support of your Community.
The Firefighters symbolize total dedication and we are very
proud of their commitment to our community. Come and visit us at
Hall #1, Lodgepole Road in Mill Bay on Wednesday nights at 7:00pm
or call 250-743-5563 for more information. Our Department has
twenty nine firefighters, a Dispatcher and four Auxiliary members.
Our new uniforms are coming in the near future.
Crowder’s Column
By Jean Crowder, MP
Food security continues to be a burning issue for many people living
in Cowichan Valley.
Like many of the places around the world facing food
insecurity, it isn’t just the ability to farm, or climate change or markets
that determine how secure a food system is.
Too often, it is trade policies that help create food insecurity.
A new trade deal being negotiated behind closed doors could have
far-reaching effects on our local food security.
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)
will have an enormous impact on our country.
Under CETA new intellectual property laws would allow
corporations an unprecedented amount of control over how farmers
use their seeds, preventing them from selling or reusing them. And
if farmers were even accused of doing so, they could be subject to
pre-emptive seizure of their property without any wrongdoing even
having been proved.
Other areas of concern include commercial access to vital
public services such as water distribution. The three biggest players
in the water world, accounting for over 70% of the water market,
are all European Multinationals ranked among the top profit-making
corporations in the world on the Fortune 500.
Clearly it is in these companies’ best long term interest to
lobby heavily to access Canadian public water delivery systems and
ownership, turning them into a money-making enterprise rather than
a right of all Canadians.
The EU is also pressuring the Canadian government for better
access to our waters as well as relaxing our export regulations on
unprocessed fish. We’ve all seen what happens when lax regulations
allow resources like raw logs to be
exported - jobs disappear.
Negotiations on CETA have been
going on behind closed doors for nearly
two years now. The NDP has consistently
called on the Conservative government
to make all negotiations transparent and democratic and provide
honest, comprehensive impact assessments.
One of the primary goals for the EU in these negotiations
is access to government procurement markets, specifically at the
provincial and municipal levels.
Procurement is an extremely valuable
policy tool, particularly for economic and
environmental issues, but only if
governments have a choice on where
funds for procurement go.
Under this agreement as it currently stands, governments would
not be able to favour local suppliers and businesses for economic
reasons, nor would they be able to encourage those that are
environmentally-friendly
These are only some of the many significant problems the NDP
is fighting against. It is vital that we preserve the ability of all levels
of government to make progressive decisions in the interest of the
public.
The country cannot prosper without trade, but no trade
agreement should come at the cost of our democracy, health and
environment.
Let’s Celebrate Your Art!
The Cowichan Valley Arts
Council (CVAC) presents its
41st annual Cowichan Valley
Fine Arts Show - one of the
Vancouver Island’s largest nonjuried
art exhibitions and sale.
This year’s edition runs from
April 6 – 10 and will be held
in the Quw’utsun’ Cultural
Comeakin House and adjacent
Riverwalk Café in Duncan.
CVAC is proud to provide this
great opportunity for all local
artists and artisans to showcase
their work as a start to BC’s Arts
and Culture Week celebrations.
This year’s Cowichan Valley
Fine Arts Show has several
new components including
children’s activities, live music
performers, an expanded Gift
Shop area and a pre-show arts
fundraiser, playfully titled
The Cowichan Catch – A Lively
Auction. Hosted by the Valley’s
Community Futures
Cowichan invests $20
million in Cowichan
businesses. Over the last 25
years Community Futures
Cowichan has supported over
700 businesses, thus creating
or maintaining over 20,000
jobs. This huge milestone is in
the same year Prime Minister
Stephen Harper declared the
‘Year of the Entrepreneur’ and
also the 25th anniversary of the
Community Futures program
in over 300 locations across
Canada.
In announcing 2011 as the Year
of the Entrepreneur, Stephen
Harper said: “I encourage
Canadians to participate in
activities taking place this year
to support local entrepreneurs
and to thank them for
contributing to the quality
of life we all enjoy.” This fits
directly into the mandate of
Community Futures, where we
aim to support and encourage
own Bill Levity, this “liveauction”
style event will benefit
CVAC’s expanding role in
providing community-based arts
ramona
Tired of making the daily
commute to Victoria and
very conscious of the time Tiera,
her yellow Lab, spent alone,
Ramona decided to use the
downsizing as an opportunity
to start her own business.
Aware of how many pet parents
commute to Victoria every day
leaving their dogs home alone.
Armed with this knowledge,
a lot of research, love for dogs
and ample property, she started
her doggy daycare.
In 2005 her garden shed was
converted into a sheltered
area and a large area of lawn
was fenced in for the dogs to
go out and play. Ramona stays
with the dogs all day and in the
winter, had only a space heater
to keep her and the dogs warm.
The space was large enough for
the dogs to come in out of the
weather but not big enough for
them to play.
Happy Tails
Ramona Cools’ business is going to the dogs – literally. She is the
owner of HappyTails Dog Daycare and loves it. Self-employment
started after government downsizing in 2005.
The growth in her business led
Ramona to expand. She has
recently moved into an 800sq.ft.
building with a larger outdoor
space for the dogs to play.
The expansion also allows for
a couple of boarding spaces.
The new building has built-
in heat, air conditioning, a TV
and a small office with Internet
access.
“The dogs love the larger space,”
says Ramona. “They have
more room to play inside during
inclement weather and enjoy
the air conditioning during the
summer.” With unfettered
access to the outdoor space,
the dogs can come and go as
they please. Ramona says it’s
not uncommon to see a group
of tired dogs huddle up for an
afternoon nap.
In an effort to ensure the dogs
are safe, HappyTails Dog
Daycare has been inspected by
local veterinarians and is fully
insured. Ramona maintains her
DogSafe First Aid and St. John’s
Ambulance Pet First Aid and is
a member of the All Canadian
Pet Services Network.
A dog daycare is a great way for
your dog to learn to socialize
with other dogs. The dogs get
to play and exercise all day. If
you are unsure if a dog daycare
is right for your best friend,
consider this; the most common
comment Ramona hears is “my
dog gets excited as soon as I turn
down the driveway.”
Dear Barbara...
Dear Barbara, Please help! My bra straps keep slipping off of my
shoulders and it’s driving me crazy! Is there something wrong with
my bras or am I just weird? – Desperate Dora
Dear Dora,
Yes, that can be a very annoying problem, but I assure you that
you are not alone. Often it is an issue with the bra, perhaps it is
too big in the band and rides up at the back, pushing the straps up
off your shoulders. Or, the style of bra may be too wide for your
frame and you would be better off with a style that has more centred
straps or that is made for a petite frame. If the problem is that
you are sloped shouldered, gadgets that help to keep bra straps on
the shoulder can be quite helpful. One of these gadgets, “The Strap
Doctor” are re-usable silicone strips that attach to the underside
of the bra strap while the silicone side grips to the skin, securing
the strap into place. Other devices solve the problem by bringing
straps together at the back.
Ultimately, a good bra fitting is where you should begin. A better
lingerie shop will have bra fitters that can determine not only what
your size is, but what style best suits you so you need never spend
the day pulling and tugging on your bra again!
Dear Barbara, I’d love to surprise my wife with a lingerie gift but
don’t know where to begin. I know what I’d like to see her in, but
I’m not so sure that she’d wear it. – Frisky Freddy
Dear Freddy,
How nice that you have decided to surprise your wife with such a
romantic, intimate gift! With a wee bit of planning and detective
work you can be assured that you give her something that you’ll
both love. If she shops at a lingerie store that keeps a record
of her previous purchases, you are miles ahead in determining
size. Otherwise, a sneak peek in her drawer will reveal what size
works for her (assuming that she has been wearing the correct
size). Bras can be one of the most difficult things to buy for
someone else, and there is some wisdom in purchasing an item
that is a bit less “size specific”, like a nice chemise, gown
or silk panties. Even some of the most conservative of women
have been converted over to the “one size fits most” Hanky Panky
thongs made of a comfortable stretch lace and available in a wide
variety of colors.
The best way to make sure it’s the right gift is to choose
something that is not too far out of her comfort zone, but speaks
to her sexy, feminine side. Remember “Happy wife, happy life”!
Insight – Ocular Rosacea
By Dr Trevor Miranda
Overview
Ocular rosacea is associated with a chronic skin condition known as
rosacea or acne rosacea. This common problem usually affects those
with light skin, and in the early stages is characterized by redness
and bumps concentrated on the forehead, nose and cheeks. One of
the earliest symptoms of rosacea, often experienced during puberty,
is facial flushing. Flushing for any reason is liable to bring on an
attack of redness and pimples. Even people who are being treated
for rosacea can relapse if they flush.
The following triggers can set it off:
• strong emotional reactions, like embarrassment or anger
• hot drinks
• alcoholic beverages
• stress
• sunlight
• extreme hot and cold temperatures
• vigourous exercise
• menopause
• some medications
Eventually, the skin may become chronically red, irritated and
inflamed. The most severe cases go on to develop rhinophyma,
the thickening of the skin and connective tissues of the nose, often
resulting in some facial scarring. Women are affected more often
than men, but men tend to have more severe symptoms
Approximately 60% of patients with rosacea develop ocular
rosacea. These patients most commonly experience irritation of the
lids and eye, occurring when the oil-producing glands of the lids
become obstructed. Styes, blepharitis, dry eye, and chronically
bloodshot eyes are also typical conditions. Sometimes scales and
crusts can form on the eyelids; there may also be sensitivity to light
or blurry vision. In severe ocular rosacea, there may be corneal
ulceration, which, if untreated, may even lead to corneal scarring.
This is a potentially blinding complication.
Detection and Diagnosis
Ocular rosacea is diagnosed by an overall examination of both
the facial skin and eyes. Eye care practitioners also frequently use
a biomicroscope, which allows the detection of tiny visible blood
vessels along the eyelid edge and any plugging of the meibomian
glands – both signs of ocular rosacea. Those with rosacea are
frequently under the care of a dermatologist and are referred for
treatment to an eye care professional when the patient develops
related eye conditions.
opposite the railway station on the east side of
Cobble Hill Road near the present location of
Olde School House Coffee.
The Porter family constructed the hotel which immediately
became a popular place for socialites from Victoria to come
and spend a few nights in the country. Guests arriving by train
found the hotel was a place to relax and party away a few days
while Cobble Hill Mountain afforded an opportunity to hike and
hunt in the wilderness.
For its time, the hotel was a grand structure. Guest rooms graced
the upper floor whilst a tea room was located on the north end of
the main floor. The ladies and escorts parlour plus separate beer
parlour were located at the south end of the building while a huge
entrance hall hosting a player piano was located in the central
lobby area.
The hotel was the hub of activity in Cobble Hill, for not only did
it provide holiday space for people visiting from Victoria and
beyond, but those searching for land in the area often stayed here
until a home site could be found. In addition, those travelling
from Mill Bay or Cowichan Bay would stay overnight at the
hotel to catch the early morning train. It is told that the school
teacher at Cobble Hill School also used the hotel as her home for
several years.
In 1942, just 50 years after it was built, the hotel burned to the
ground in a late night fire. Although the blaze was fought
valiantly by villagers who formed a bucket brigade, the building
was completely destroyed. This fire prompted the construction
of Cobble Hill’s first fire station in 1943 and the hall with its
firefighting equipment was located in a small building next to
Barry’s garage.
In her book, Hamlet With An Attitude, Virginia Bonner notes
that before it destruction in 1942 the hotel had seven different
proprietors and it was in 1924 when the hotel was purchased by
Mr. H. Macklin that its name was changed to Wilton Place Hotel.
April Movie Review
By A.R. (Angie) Boutin, Mill Bay Prime Video Plus
Prime Video Plus has so often been complimented
by our unique categorization of our genres and
presentation that I can not help but present yet one
more lesser known mini-genre that so many of our
customers are attracted to. That is, we have created
a section dedicated to movies with the common
theme of Court and Law. With this genre, there is
always the element of suspense coupled, usually,
with some element of court drama or action that
keeps many of us on the edge . . . our interest is
even more heavily invested should the story be
based on factual events that somehow remotely
challenge our perceived legal rights . . .
The most current movies that come to mind that are
befitting this Court/Law category is Conviction
starring Hilary Swank (acting was superb) and
Beyond A Reasonable Doubt starring
Michael Douglas. Both of these films give rise to
new stars all the while concentrating on the all too
realistic court room battles that despite the keen eye
of reputable witnesses and their pledges to tell the
truth, have often time proven to (both on and off
screen) have horrific results. So, given that this is
one of my personal favorite categories, what would
I recommend? In no particular order here are some
great court and law films:
12 Angry Men – either the original 1957 version with Henry Fonda or the 1997 remake with Jack Lemmon
offer good entertainment value. The movie focuses on a jury’s deliberations in a capital murder case in which the
accused may face the death penalty if found guilty. Open and shut case? Perhaps not as the complexity of juror
personalities and prejudices influence the issue at hand . . . to reach a unanimous verdict. Can one individual
sway the opinions of eleven others? It makes for an interesting film!
Rated PG.
A Time to Kill – What makes this movie great is not just that it is based on a John Grisham novel which
in itself is an unforgettable experience, but the cast is incredible as well... Matthew McConaughey, Sandra
Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Spacey, Oliver Platt, Keifer Sutherland, Donald Sutherland, Ashley Judd . . .
In this court room film the underlying theme is about racial division and politics. McConaughey plays a young
idealistic lawyer defending a black man accused of murdering two men who raped his 10 year old daughter.
Will vigilante justice prevail?
Rated R.
A Few Good Men – Starring, Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson – Cruise plays a less than
interested young lawyer who is assigned with defending two Marines accused of murder; The Marines contend
that they were acting under orders . . . with out giving away too much, the trial prep scenes are compelling and
the court room confrontation between Cruise and Nicholson is exhilarating . . .
Rated R.
The Rainmaker – One of Matt Damon’s better performances (although in all due respect I am becoming
increasingly fond of his performances as he matures). In this film, also based on a John Grisham novel, we are
shown that despite the seamy side of law and lawyers’, justice can prevail . . . Damon plays an inexperienced
and unemployed lawyer who finds him self representing an elderly couple whose corrupt insurance company
will not pay for an operation that could save their son’s life. His role is supported nicely by Danny DeVito.
Rated PG-13.
A Civil Action – based on a true story as well as the book by Jonathan Harr, this movie focuses on the
compelling class action lawsuit against a large greedy company who happens to also be the pre-dominant
local employer (which in itself causes much turmoil giving us a sense of desperation). The accusation is that this
company has knowingly dumped toxic waste into a river causing illness amongst the local townsfolk. Stars John
Travolta, Kathleen Quinlan, William H. Macy and Robert Duvall.
Rated PG-13 for language.
Are these good court room dramas? . . . You be the judge!
The weather for the winter of 2010/2011 has held some elements
that roses don’t like. Two fairly short but deep bouts of frost in
November and March caught many plants off guard – Roses
particularly. Roses these days are hardier than they used to be as
hybridizers continue to create more disease-free and hardy plants.
Roses are the type of plant that really benefit from a careful but fairly
severe pruning – particularly established plants.
For excellent pruning tips for roses visit Select Roses website at
www.selectroses.ca. Chocked full of great rose advice.
Bill Herring’s presentation
on vegetable growing was so
popular at our March meeting
there are already requests for
more. To continue a great season
of speakers, the esteemed Mr.
Bernie Dinter from Dinter’s
Nursery will be speaking on lawn
care on April 26. We haven’t
addressed this topic for years
and Bernie is a popular, extremely knowledgeable speaker.
It’s bound to be a packed house.
Member Dustin Carlson presented a superb workshop in his
garden on Cultivating Mushrooms with many members going home
with logs and sawdust culture inoculated with mushroom spawn of
several varieties. It was an outstanding learning experience for our
members and we are grateful to Dustin for sharing his expertise.
Our 64th Annual Community Flower and Garden Show will
take place on June 11, 2011 and our volunteer team is full speed
ahead putting together a fabulous day for gardening enthusiasts at
all levels. We are introducing a photo contest of garden subjects that
we hope will inspire community members to enter.
We meet the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Mill Bay
Community Hall next to the Kerry Park Recreation Centre. We
get started around 6:30 p.m. to allow for set up, library visits,
networking, plant buying, Brag Table entry set-up, etc. and we
are generally finished around 8:45 p.m. after the guest speaker
concludes.
Our Club offers education, networking, helpful assistance and
fun! Gardeners and would be-gardeners at all levels are warmly
welcomed. Contact Heather Gibbins at heathergibbins@yahoo.ca
Stitch, Rip And Glue
By Sheila Warneken
Fortunately, I do a variety of creative projects for clients teaching
sewing, painting and anything creative but I am also asked to
do these same projects for my customers. Alterations are regular
requests and for those who sew either as a passion or out of necessity
some alteration tips might be helpful.
We are mid season between inside and outside interests so
therefore an excellent time to review your wardrobe. Personally it’s
better if someone culled my wardrobe rather than me as they would
use a dispassionate eye. With alterations I would rather sew from
scratch than alter my clothes but altering is a necessity of life and
being economical.
First of all is the dreaded hole in the knee of jeans. The Mars
guy, young or old, would rather die than give up his precious broken
in jeans. So Venus lady unpicks the inseam for about 6” parallel
to the dreaded hole. Place a scrap of denim (keep fabric on grain)
placed inside the hole from inseam to just overlapping the other
seam. With this 6” opening you will have more area to work in and
it will be less frustrating. Stitch in the ditch on the side seam to secure
that edge of the patch. Then zigzag twice around the offending hole
ensuring you catch the frayed edge. Finally turn the jean inside out
and sew up the inseam opening. If you do the alteration this way it
will take 10 minutes to do plus it will save you from divorce.
Next hemming pants – because they are never the right length
when you buy them. If they are a washable fabric wash them first.
Unless you have hip, back or walking problems it is not necessary
to pin up both legs. Ensure you are wearing the right height heeled
shoe, then pin up one leg only to the desired length. Lay your slacks
out on a table, with the legs flat together (inseams together, sides
seams facing up), pin the waistband evenly together at the top so
that the bottom of the pants are equal. Match your pin marks on the
unpinned leg to the pinned leg. Check the length the maker has
allowed for the hem. Usually it is 11/2” to 2” hem so allow for
that when cutting off the excess. After this is done fold up the hem
allowance, press before sewing. Most cotton/polyester slacks
are machine hemmed with the stitching on the
right side of the fabric. If the stitching is hidden
it is a hand hem so use a slip or cross stitch for
hemming. Jeans require a 1” allowance for the
hem, turn 1/2” underneath and top stitch using
a longer stitch length. Seams on jeans are thick
so use a #16 needle on your machine and trim
the inseam and side seam allowance which
saves on broken needles.
Planning Tomorrows:
Kicking the Can down the Road
By Pete Keber, FMA
The recession succeeding the Dot-Com bust seemed to
surrender very quickly to interest rate cuts and tax cuts.
After a longer lag time we appear to be getting similar
results from the great recession caused by the subprime
and real estate fiasco. At least that is what the media
pundits might have you believing.
Ever since Alan Greenspan began a regime of cutting
interest rates every time there was a financial slowdown, we have
been seeing a series of booms and busts that become increasingly
larger, fuelled by monetary heroin. The trouble is, we have never
dealt with the structure of our whole financial system, with the way
that corporations are allowed to run roughshod over the system. If
we don’t have a good framework in place, how can we ever expect
to resolve the issues that cause widespread instability and suffering
throughout society. If we keep on delaying the day of reckoning
by smoking another crackpipe, our addiction will become what
we are, and the withdrawal will be so painful, that we may not be
able to recover.
For those that were not threatened with job losses during the
last crisis, and whose businesses survived unscathed, it probably
did not seem like any great calamity occurred. They may have read
about a world that was on the brink of crashing, but they certainly
didn’t feel it in their pocketbooks, or their daily lives, so they can
be forgiven for thinking that it wasn’t all that bad. Canadians were
particularly blessed, as we did not see our financial institutions teeter,
or our real estate market collapse. Everything happened elsewhere,
so we were almost immune. We have reasonably strong safeguards
in place, so we shouldn’t be too worried about the next bust.
Or should we?
Everyone knows that we depend heavily on US markets for our
exports and the US is our largest trading partner. The developing
world managed to take up some of the slack the last round, but the
US is still numero uno and the rest of the world depends on their
shameless consumer society to fuel their continued prosperity. Despite
all the happy talk about economic recovery accelerating south of us,
the reality may be somewhat different than the perception.
The middle class is eroding around the edges as imbalances
climb. In the US in the 1970s the top 1% earned about 9% of total
income. In recent years that top 1% now earns 20% and yet the
Republicans made sure that they retained their tax cuts. They tell
us that those cuts will help stimulate the economy, though that has
not been the case over the last decade. During the fifties and early
sixties, when the imbalances were smaller, the rich paid much higher
taxes and the GDP was much higher.
Real unemployment hovers around the 20% mark in the
US which is much higher than the reported rate of 9%, but they
continually remove more discouraged workers from the employment
rolls. Housing is still at historic lows and likely to plunge lower. The
inflation rate appears low if you take out food and energy, so the
Fed feels comfortable about printing more money. Federal and State
budgets are looking for places to cut spending, and it seems that
their employees are their primary targets.
Children and Dogs
By Lisbeth Plant KPACTP
Kids and dogs can be the best buddies – or, it can be the
worst chaos! As parents, we can do a lot to foster a loving
relationship through Supervision and Education.
Every year, 2.8 million children suffer dog bites in the USA (cf.
3.5M are injured during sports and recreational activities). Kids
5-9 years old are most at risk, and boys twice as much as girls.
Most bites are from a dog belonging to family or friends, not pit
bulls on the rampage. Most bites are caused by lack of supervision
and misunderstandings between child and dog. Humans and
canines do not necessarily understand each other’s language. As
busy parents, we may not be able to keep up-to-date with the latest
research on dogs.
Make sure that the dog can escape when the game gets
too much for him and that he has a safe place where the children
understand that they must leave him alone. Supervise!
Many dogs tolerate manhandling; very few enjoy it. Dogs do
not like hugs and kisses! Oh, I know, your dog does. Please take
another look? When your child hugs your dog, do his ears hang
down, does he turn sideways, lick his lips, yawn, blink, pant or even
freeze? These are signs of stress that mean “I’m really uncomfortable
right now.” The freeze is a pre-bite warning! Dogs can learn to
tolerate hugs, but to most, hugging is a rude restraint.
Kisses can cause a bite to the face. When the preceding
“Please, don’t!” signals were not understood, the dog may put teeth
on skin to say “NO!”. Such a bite warning would be fine on another
dog or puppy, but a child has no fur to protect her sensitive skin.
Demonstrate correct behaviour to your children and teach
them that In our family, we are kind to animals. Ask you trainer for
more information or go to www.doggonesafe.com.
Supervise! Never leave children alone with a dog. Never!
YOU EARN IT.
THE GOVERNMENT TAKES IT.
PUT A STOP TO IT.
Why Life’s brighter with a registered retirement savings plan
• Make a contribution, pay less tax that year and put even more money into
your retirement savings.
• Watch your money grow tax-free until it’s time to take it out.
• Pay a lower tax rate when you withdraw money for your retirement – and
enjoy having more to spend.
Today is a good day to learn more, so let’s talk.
DESIGNING
TOMORROW’S VISION
TODAY
Every child deserves
the best chance at
future success.
● As Eye Care Professionals,
we recognise that over 80%
of children’s learning is based
on vision.
● Undiagnosed vision problems
may cause children that are
otherwise packed with potential,
to be left lagging behind.
● A child does not need to be
able to read or even talk to be
assessed for eye health or
visual concerns.
We look forward to
meeting your family soon!
