Since 1948, Mildred and Gladys Horning of Eliot have been 

buying Fords every two years or so from the Starkey Ford family in 

York. A photo is taken of them with the dealership’s staff to mark 

each purchase. David Starkey, the company president, keeps these 

photos to show the changes in all over the years. 

These two photos mark a span of 60 years of buying Fords for 

the Hornings. The bottom picture is of their Ford at the Nubble Light 

House in York Beach, bought in 1948. The top photo shows their

REQUEST FOR BID 

The Town of Acton is requesting bids for the 

restoration of the historic Town Pound that 

was filled with gravel and other debris by a 

road washout during the Patriot’s Day 

storm. The work includes the removal of 

trees within the Pound. The removed material 

(150 yd plus or minus) will belong to the 

bidder. Bid submission will include a plan of 

action which will be subject to review. 

The following parameters must be 

observed: 

1. No disturbance to the structure will be 

allowed. No stones comprising the 

structure will be moved or damaged. 

2. Care will be taken not to remove any 

earth below the level of the grade elevation 

of the soil surface prior to the 

flooding. This will involve the removal of 

lowest gravel by hand methods. 

Bids will be due by April 23, 2009 and may 

be mailed to: The Town of Acton, P.O. Box 

540, Acton, ME 04001 or may be left at the 

Town Office at 35 H Road. 

The successful bid will be awarded based 

on the plan most appropriate for the successful 

removal of the material and the 

cost of doing so. The Town of Acton reserves 

right to accept or reject any proposals, to 

waive any technical or legal deficiency, and 

to negotiate a contract with any contractor 

in the best interest of the Town.
