A northern Atlantic species found on the higher mountains of<br />
Madeira, Azores and Canary Islands and restricted in Europe to<br />
N. Spain, W. France and the <strong>British</strong> <strong>Isles</strong> where it has a distinct<br />
oceanic distribution. Its yellow-green frond and purplish stipe<br />
are diagnostic. Hybrids involving this species are very rare (see<br />
27.5 x 1, D. x pseudoabbreviata, p. 84) but juvenile or<br />

immature plants which morphologically appear intermediate<br />
between D.aemula and D.austriaca have been found on Mull,<br />
v.c. 103, and Soay, v.c. 104, and need further investigation.<br />
Such hybrids could only be distinguished from the similarly<br />
triploid D.austriaca x expansa by the lack of chromosome<br />
pairing at meiosis.<br />
