In contrast to subsp. trichomanes,subsp. quadrivalensprefers<br />
calcareous sites and becomes widespread on mortared walls in<br />
the wetter parts of the country. It is clear from the number of<br />
specimens of this subspecies determined in herbaria that it is<br />
the conimonest taxon. <strong>The</strong>re would be a tendency, however,<br />
for collectors to take more specimens from walls near roads<br />
than from natural rock faces in the hills.<br />
