A species confined in Europe to the western seaboard although<br />
the distribution is controlled within that climatic zone by<br />
suitable substrate (preferably a coarse sandstone interbedded<br />
with some impervious layer which can produce lateral<br />
movement of ground water). Many old sites have been made<br />
extinct by the depredation of collectors; it may yet be refound<br />

on Arran, v.c. 100, and on the northernmost locality so far<br />
recorded, Ardlamont Point, v.c. 98 (see W.Stewart, Trans.<br />
Nat. Hist. Soc. Glasgow 6: 18-21; 1899). <strong>The</strong> map shows as a<br />
solid dot all squares where the species has been at any time<br />
recorded. Trichomanes speciosum is protected by the<br />
Conservation of Wild Creatures and Wild Plants Act, 1975.<br />
