Living in a bus to nowhere
Thembeni PlaaTjie
Clothes are hung out to dry on the
seats, shoes are packed in the luggage
compartment, two seats serve
as his kitchen, and another two in the rear
of the bus are his bed.
Cornel Isaacs (54) is unemployed and
has been living in an old disused bus in
Albany Road for the last six months after
he was kicked out of his son’s house. His
sad face shows the hardship he has been
through over these last six months. He
says he used to stay with his only son in
Vergenoeg, but experienced problems with
his son’s girlfriend. “She does not want me
there. One day I came back to the house in
the afternoon and my clothes were thrown
in a rubbish bin,” explains Isaacs. “That
was the sign that I was no longer wanted
in that house. I approached the bus owner,
who is my friend and asked him to use his
bus as my shelter and he allowed me. I
packed my things and came to this bus.” He
admitted that he used to drink a lot. “They
(my son and his girlfriend) would complain
that I use the toilet more frequently and I
disturb them,” he said.
Isaacs survives through the assistance
of people who take pity on him and offer
him odd jobs such as gardening. He said
he lives peacefully in the bus but his only
trouble is the school kids who throw stones
at the windows. “The kids from George
Dickerson and St Mary’s primary schools
throw stones at the bus when they pass
by,” says Isaacs.
His only wish is to have an RDP house.
“I would be happy if I could get my RDP
house,” he says, adding that he registered
for the house ten years ago but is still waiting.
“For now, this is my only house.”
STAFF REPORTER
A LOCAL woman who purchased
Avon products from a Grahamstown
agent got a raw deal when she waited
over four months for her cosmetics
order to arrive.
Anna-Karien Otto told Grocott’s
Mail that she ordered cosmetics
worth over R200 from Cindy Classen,
an Avon representative, at the beginning
of June. “She did not give me a
receipt for the cash I gave her, telling
me very smoothly that she never does
as Avon only gives her a receipt once
the goods have been delivered to her.”
Otto waited for a month and then
went to Claasen at her place of work.
“Cindy said that, due to the shipping
strikes, none of her orders had arrived
yet.” But after not hearing from
her for three months, she called the
Avon call centre “nine times in total
with no help given whatsoever. The
worst is, they claim they record their
calls”.
She added that she also sent numerous
emails to Avon through their
national website.
“I was only met with obvious irritation,
sighs and even had the phone
put down in my ear. To my knowledge,
they never once got hold of Cindy
herself. After pleading and bursting
into tears out of sheer frustration,
I spoke to a call supervisor called
In September, Otto went back to
Otto’s number and had the complete
order ready and waiting at home. “I
of the seven items I had ordered were
the rest of my money.”
When Grocott’s Mail spoke to
Claassen she said it is normal for orders
to get delayed because Avon has
Dondashe murder case heats
up in High court
OLWETHU XABANISA
see if you can overcome
a gun,” these words
“Let’s
echoed through the
Grahams-town High Court as the
late Oscar Dondashe’s girlfriend testified
about the events which led to
his murder last year.
Xolelwa Saku who was present
when Dondashe was allegedly shot
and killed by Zolani Myeki on 12 July
2009 at V Street in Tantyi told the
court that when Myeki said those
words he pulled the trigger hitting
Dondashe in the head, killing him
instantly.
Saku told the court that she and
Dondashe were on their way home
from Dinangwe Tavern in Tantyi
when the incident occurred. She said
as they were walking along V Street
they noticed two men who were
singing prison gang songs following
them.
“Oscar said I should run and
leave him behind but I told him that
I am going nowhere, I will walk with
him. One of them had his hand in
his pocket and the other one had his
hand on his waist as if he was reaching
for something,” added Saku.
She said when she and Dondashe
started running, the two men chased
them, caught up and stopped in front
of them.
Saku said it was at that point that
Myeki said these words “let’s see if
you can overcome a gun” to Dondashe
before shooting him.
Oscar Dondashe in happier times. File Photo
“They said I must give them my
phone and I did, they searched Oscar
while he was lying down and took his
wallet, they also took my earrings
and engagement ring. He (Myeki)
also pointed the gun at me saying
that I must die because I’m going to
be a witness,” said Saku.
She added that the other assail-
ant told Myeki that they should go as
the police were approaching. Saku
said the culprits told her to lie down
with her face on the ground as they
made away with Dondashe’s cellphone
and her handbag.
Saku said she went to Dondashe’s
friend’s house where she
called for help.
Good service is cosmetic
The case’s investigating officer
also gave an account of what he witnessed
at the crime scene. Inspector
Melekile Mame said he saw an
empty 9mm bullet cartridge next to
the deceased when he arrived. He
thereafter went to Myeki’s house
and found a teenager who did not appear
to be linked to the case.
Mame said he entered a room
at the back of the main house,
searched and found an ID book with
bank cards belonging to Mthetheleli
Ngqulu, a local soldier. Ngqulu had
been mugged and stabbed seven
days before Dondashe’s murder by
four men. His ID, money and bank
cards were taken from him by four
men including Myeki. Ngqulu also
testified at the High Court yesterday
about his mugging.
Mame further searched Myeki’s
room where he found another ID book
and dagga. When he questioned Myeki
about the ID he said it belonged to
his sister. It was later established that
the ID belonged to Bongani Majiza a
man who had also been stabbed and
mugged on July 4 2009.
Inspector Mame arrested Myeki
on the spot. Since then he has appeared
for bail at the Magistrates
Court. However, he asked to remain
in custody because he feared the
community.
The presiding judge, Justice Nomathamsanqa
Beshe said she would
grant the defence attorney an opportunity
to consult with his client,
the trial continues today.
who experience delays. “Sometimes
the products get sold out and we have
to wait for them to get delivered from
overseas,” she said.
Numerous attempts to obtain
comment from Avon were unsuccessful.
Three weeks ago, a woman
by the name of Vicky Saunders said
she would immediately get back to
Grocott’s Mail after she has spoken
to Avon’s media office but she
never did.
Woman kidnaps older woman
Between 6 and 7 October, a 64
year old woman was kidnapped in
Nonzube Street. The details are
not clear at present but the woman
was at home when she was coerced
into following the kidnapper to her
house.
The kidnapper demanded money
from her and told her that she
will not be allowed to leave without
handing over the money. When the
woman said she didn’t have any, the
kidnapper locked her in a room. The
next morning, the woman was forced
to go to the Department of Home Affairs,
where a new ID document was
processed. From there the woman
was sent to her bank to open a new
account, and was forced to make a
withdrawal. An undisclosed sum of
money was withdrawn and the kidnapper
was given R300.
The woman was then left at a
friend’s house, from where the matter
was reported. No arrests have
been made and a case of kidnapping
has been opened.
Grocott’s Mail Friday, 15 October 2010
independent councillors could be
more effective
Steven Lang
Prominent local advocate and politician,
Jock mcConnachie, has launched a new political
movement called the makana new
Deal. He says the the aim of the new Deal
is to take control of local government and
Decisions behind closed doors by Mayoral
mcConnachie argues that the current system
makes councillors too dependent on their
political affiliations. He therefore believes that independent
councillors will be able to work more
effectively for the interests of their constituents
the following list shows how mcConnachie
believes the new Deal will change the political
landscape at local level:
All decisions in open council involving all councillors
Open council decisions dictated by party caucus No caucuses. All councillors enjoy free vote.
Councillors selected by the ANC. Councillors stand for election in their own right.
Councillors accountable to teh ANC as party
All councillors part-time and of equal status
Officials appointed for party loyalty. Officials appointed only on merit/ability to do their job.
Functions of councillors and officials blurred. Paid officials to do work. Councillors to exercise
oversight.
Fulltime councillors earning excessive salaries and
enjoying excessive fringe benefits.
Wasteful expenditure on entertainment and nonessentials.
No fulltime councillors. No fancy fringe benefits.
“Councillors should be concerned that
Dolphins may be barometers to the health
of our coastal waters
Reyhana MahoMed
A
new study aims to show
how dolphin health is
an indicator of the state
of our coastal waters.
Two species of dolphin
are sometimes caught in antishark
nets off KwaZulu-Natal:
the bottlenose and humpback
dolphins.
This provides an opportunity
to study the dolphins
and determine as much as
possible about them so that
informed conservation decisions
about the populations
of these two types of dolphins
in our coastal waters can be
made.
Dr Stephanie Plön of the
South African Institute for
Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB)
and the Port Elizabeth Museum
will be the first to study
the health of these two species
in South Africa through
a new research project in
collaboration with The Wildlife
Epidemiology section of
the Research and Scientific
Services Department at the
National Zoological Gardens
(NZG).
The team of researchers
will provide training, supervision
and logistical assistance
for the project that will investigate
the health status of the
two species of dolphin: the
HOUSE FOR SALE
ALEXANDRIA R610 000
bottlenose (Tursiops aduncus)
and humpback dolphins
(Sousa chinensis). This is the
first study of its kind in South
Africa, as no other health assessment
of the dolphins has
been made. Just as deaths
in the Nile Crocodile population
in the Oliphant’s River is
an indicator of the degree of
pollution, dolphins are apex
predators in coastal waters
and studying them will help
us to evaluate the health of
the marine ecosystem in the
coastal waters of KZN.
Since water running into
the sea may be full of pollutants,
garbage, sewerage and
infectious agents, the health
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL...
Access to clean water is about to
become much easier for thousands
of rural South Africans through
the Nedbank Foundation’s decision
to invest R1.3-million in innovative
Hippo water rollers, with the
Mbashe District in the Eastern
Cape being the first beneficiary.
The Hippo water roller is a large
drum which can store up to 90
litres of water. It can easily be
rolled over various types of terrain,
providing a much better alternative
to people (often women and
children) having to carry buckets
of water with their hands or on
their heads. A total of 450 Hippo
water rollers will be distributed to
Idutywa, Willowvale and Elliotdale
in the Mbashe District. The project
launch will take place at the Mkhathasi
Junior Secondary School in
Elliotdale. In addition, Nedbank is
also donating boreholes and water
tanks for each area. Photo: Supplied
of these dolphins is an indicator
of how these contaminants
may be affecting other ocean
occupants and, indirectly, of
any health risks for humans
using the rivers running into
the sea or the coastal waters
for food or recreation.
Dr Morné de Wet, a veterinarian,
will be doing his
master’s study on the health
of dolphins at the Faculty of
New property development on the cards
olwethu Xabanisa
PROPERTy developers Pieter Muller and
Louis Schlebusch, together with Lew Geffen
Sotheby’s International Realty, launched a new
property development at Henry Ate restaurant
on Tuesday evening.
Louis Schlebusch, one of the developers
said, “We chose Grahamstown for the gap it
has in middle income earners and we will also
be using Grahamstown locals as labourers. It
is a very safe investment for a first time buyer
because of the good return on the investment.”
According to Marinda van Achterbergh of
Sotheby’s, they have already sold 17 of the 40
planned units after the launch.
“The municipality has approved the project,
which will consist of two bedrooms, two bathrooms,
a dining room and a kitchen in one unit,”
said Steve Birt of Sotheby’s. “There will be a lift
at the rear of the building for disabled people,
an electric fence and gate for security. The units
on the ground floor will cost R512 000 each and
the ones on the top floors R465 000 per unit.” For
rentals a room will cost R2 000 a month which
adds up to R4 000 a month.
6 Editorial
Liberty and Progress
Established 1870
Don’t be silly
Our newsroom was quite excited with
the news that Higher Education Minister,
Blade Nzimande was coming to
Grahamstown to address a youth leadership
indaba. It is an important meeting, but we
were really keen to see if the minister was
going to say anything about his campaign to
muzzle the media. If there was any question
time, our reporter would be sure to ask for
Nzimande’s views.
We were then disappointed to learn –
only two days before his scheduled address
– that the minister had cancelled his visit
to Grahamstown “because flights were not
available on the days he required”. This is
surprising for reasons that we might not be
able to discuss if Nzimande has his way, but
since the Media Appeals Tribunal does not
yet exist and the Protection of Information
Bill has not yet been passed into law, we can
freely discuss Nzimande’s lame excuse.
His cancellation is surprising because it
tells us that the minister’s travel department
only books flights two days ahead of expected
departure. In other words, the minister’s
office only plans two days in advance – sort
of. That might explain a few things about our
R165-billion education system.
The excuse that the Minister could not
get the flight he wanted is just silly. Shortly
after receiving the email saying that there
were no suitable flights available – we
checked. There were in fact, plenty of seats
still available on Saturday morning that
would enable Minister Nzimande to fly into
Port Elizabeth and comfortably make it on
time for his address. There were seats on
various flights to PE so we didn’t even bother
to check the East London flights.
Oops, we forgot to check if the seats were
first class.
Anyway, can you imagine what the
chances are of an SAA bookings clerk saying
to the Minister’s office, “sorry we don’t have
any place for the minister”?
Yeah, right – as if that's going to happen.
More like terminus
horribilis
I read with absolute horror that the proposed
bus terminus is going ahead and is to be built
in the middle of Bathurst Street. How ridiculous.
Who on earth thought of that not-such-a
-bright-spark idea? Why not use the existing
building at the old train station for this purpose?
There is a lot of space for buses to park
and passengers to wait. The infrastructure is
there and let's be honest – it could do with a
bit of revamping, a bit of extra lighting and a
coat of paint and some new fencing around it
– a small coffee shop could also be opened for
those waiting and the building used for a good
purpose instead of being just another abandoned
building. By having the terminus there,
there will be no need for another eyesore
right in front of another one of our beautiful
churches (the first being those traffic lights in
front of the Cathedral). Photographs are taken
daily of the top of Bathurst Street by tourists
who visit Grahamstown for its historic buildings
and many churches and now it is going to
be ruined by this terminus. Underground
toilets – not a very safe option for young
mothers with children getting off the bus in
the middle of the night and needing to use the
facilities now is it? Common sense was obviously
not on the agenda when it was decided
that this new terminus horribilis should go
ahead in the proposed area. Grahamstown
Royal service at the
Public Library
At Hill Street Public Library, Jeannette help
two little old ladies very politely on Friday
afternoon (8 October). These women stood at
the corner of the counter, looking at the new
books piled there. One mentioned a book she
had much enjoyed, but could not remember
the author. Jeannette looked up the title
of the book on the computer, then went to
the shelves and fetched the book, while the
women twittered on.
A second book came under discussion –
again title only, uncertainty about the author.
Again Jeannette found the information on the
computer. Again she fetched the book from
the 900 odd books on the shelves while the
two senior citizens were mentally preparing
themselves for action.
We really felt that we had been royally
treated... beyond our expectations. We had not
meant to be a nuisance. Thank you Jeannette
for your civility.
Patience is a virtue
When pedestrians ignore the red robot and
stream unconcernly across the road, I always
remark on how law-abiding the drivers are,
waiting patiently.
I was waiting to cross from Dunn's corner
to the Cathedral. The pedestrian robot turned
green. I always still look up and down to make
sure there is no car coming. This time a car
was coming in the AN White direction. I will
step back onto the pavement, my safety first.
Other cars were quietly lined up at the cross-
ing from AN White/EPBS. What had happened
to this driver's mind, I don’t know.
Anonymous
Respect the robots
I waited to cross from Albany Jewellers to
Truworths. The pedestrian robot was red.
From Truworths side, a young mother took
the hand of her Graeme Junior son (in school
uniform) and laughingly skipped him across.
They were halfway when a car, having right of
way, had to stop to let them pass.
I went to Clicks and on my return, this
same mother and young son, in school uniform,
again defied the red pedestrian robot
on their way back. When I cried shame, mom
laughed merrily.
At the same time, a Kingswood girl in
school uniform with her straw boater also
crossed when the pedestrian robot was red.
Pedestrians who disgrace the uniforms
they are allowed to wear, should be fined
double.
three varied concerts this
in their chamber music
version with string quintet,
a programme with winds, and
an evening of piano trios. As a
finale, they will broaden their
repertoire with a fusion of
classical and jazz with works
by Scott Joplin, Dave Brubeck
and others.
The highlight of the programme
is the performance
of Claude Bolling’s Suite for
piece that was commissioned
by Pinchas Zukerman.
What's your greatest ambition in life?
I’ll answer this with my favourite quote: “To be
nobody but yourself, in a world which is doing
its best, night and day, to make you everybody
else, means to fight the hardest battle which
any human being can fight, and never stop
fighting.” - ee cummings
Tell us something about you that nobody else
knows.
I’m certainly not going to divulge my deeper
and darker secrets, but here’s some lesser
known and innocuous information: it was at
the advanced age of 30 that I began formal
music studies at university (although I did
have the advantage of private piano tuition as
a youth). When I first attended university at 18,
I intended majoring in English and History and
I was looking towards a career in journalism or
advertising.
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Some years ago I decided to learn tai chi. As
the months went by, I realised that the instructor
of my group expected a level of commitment
which I didn’t feel I could offer so I
John Edwards questions
and
answers
John Edwards is a jazz pianist, composer and educator. Originally from Durban, he graduated from
the University of KwaZulu-Natal with a Masters in Jazz and lectured at this institution from 2004
while pursuing his career as a professional jazz musician. Although his preferred medium is acoustic
jazz, his musical versatility has enabled him to perform, compose and record in several musical
contexts including rock bands, jazz/classical fusions, dance productions, cabaret and cruise ship
engagements. After a four year spell at Rhodes and in Grahamstown, John moved to Port Elizabeth
in 2010. In addition to teaching at NMMU, he is increasingly visible as a jazz performer in and
around the Eastern Cape region.
fabricated a tale involving serious physical injury
to extricate myself from the classes. I was
living in a big city at the time and didn’t think
I would encounter anyone from the class, let
alone the instructor. He arrived unannounced
at my home with the intention of aiding me in
my plight. Clearly in the best of health, and
wearing beach apparel, I opened my front door
to find him standing there. I remember in that
embarrassing moment a variety of wild options
flashed through my head - deny everything,
slam the door and lock it, kill the instructor
and emigrate, pretend to be my long lost twin…
As it was, I blushed and mumbled incoherently,
hopelessly caught out in my lie. The instructor
didn’t speak but the unwavering intensity
of his stare and the contemptuous turn of his
heel kind of said it all.
How does Grahamstown rock for you?
There is a high concentration – disproportionate
to a small town – of diverse, talented and
eccentric people who live here. This makes
Grahamstown – for the most part – a dynamic
and interesting place.
If there was one thing that you could change
about Grahamstown, what would it be?
Perhaps it’s in my head and it contradicts my
previous response but it seems that torpor can
descend upon Grahamstown without warning
– if only there was something that could be
activated to keep Grahamstown consistently
inspiring…
If you could be mayor for a day what would
you do?
Oh, all the usual: eradicate poverty, create
empowering and sustainable opportunities for
the street children and build bridges between
the economically polarised communities in the
town. Realistically though, if it’s only for one
day, I’d probably revel in my status, dress up
in my mayoral robes and chains and go out for
breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Who are your top three dinner guests?
I know I’m supposed to probably come up with
high profile figures for this question. But, in all
honesty, my top three dinner guests would be
close friends who love and accept me unconditionally.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what
three things would you take with you?
A luxury resort, my own chalet and a contract
for a well paid gig.
What word best describes you?
Stubborn. And on that note, I’d like two words.
I’m also generous.
What is your favorite recipe?
My own take on prawn curry.
What do you do in your spare time?
I vacillate between healthy and unhealthy lifestyle
choices and activities.
What are you reading at the moment?
I usually have two books on the go. At the moment
it’s The Pregnant Widow by Martin Amis
and Solar by Ian McEwan. Solar is winning by
a wide margin. I’m also looking forward to the
new book by Jonathan Franzen.
What's your favorite CD?
There are several. A perennial favourite is
A Kind of Blue by Miles Davis.
Grocott’s Mail Friday, 15 October 2010
Local lovely wins Miss Port Alfred
Joani de Coning, a Grade 12 learner at Hoërskool PJ Olivier, won the Lions/Talk of the Town Miss Port Alfred pageant. She is
the first Afrikaans girl to be crowned as Miss Port Alfred. Grocott’s Mail reporter Khanyiso Tshwaku caught up with her
Was this your first pageant?
Yes. I was having breakfast with my mom at
the Big Apple in Port Alfred when I was approached
by Lloyd Stephenson, a Lions Club
member. He asked me if would I like to enter
Miss Port Alfred and I answered: ‘I don’t do
pageants.’
He then explained that there are other
benefits to pageants, besides the showcasing
of beauty. I then gave it some thought and the
next day I decided to enter. Since I was new in
Bushman's River, I saw it as a chance to make
friends.
How did you prepare for the pageant?
I had to do research on how to do pageants.
I asked Ivy, the choreographer about
pageant outfits, which are swimwear, casual
and evening. From there I started to plan my
outfits.
Did you enjoy the experience?
The pageant was fun. We all got a list of 20
questions which we all had to prepare for and
out of those 20, you were given one of them to
answer. None of the questions were right or
wrong questions, they just gauged your confidence
and your speaking ability.
What lessons did you learn from the pageant?
It is hard work organising a pageant. A lot of
work was put into the organising and promotion
of the pageant.
Did you give yourself any chance of
winning?
It was a 50/50 kind of thought. I was hoping to
win, but I didn’t think I would! I am involved
in the community and I saw the pageant as an
opportunity to get more people involved in the
community.
How stiff was the competition?
It was very stiff. There were a lot of beautiful
and intelligent girls competing.
Do you see your win as a stepping stone to
other beauty pageants?
I don’t know if I'd go that far as I am shy, but if it
would give me a chance to be involved with the
community, then I'd enter.
So what are your plans for next year?
I plan to take a gap year, but I’ll study a course
in teaching English to foreign language spaekers.
The reasoning behind taking a gap year is
that people change from their matric year to
first year, so I did not want to chose something,
then drop it midway through the year, but I
would love to teach foreign people English.
Michael Jackson maestro
wins local talent show
CHESLEY DANIELS
A TWELVE-YEAR old Grade 6 learner from St Mary's Primary
School was crowned the winner of a local talent show held at the
Recreation Hall last weekend. Demaine Walters scooped up the
winner’s cheque of R1 000.
The event was hosted by the Ultimate Savings Club in Grahamstown
and Grahamstown’s young and old came out in droves
to witness the abundance of talent on show. The hall was full to
capacity and there were no seats available as most people were
standing throughout the show. An estimated crowd of close to 1
000 people attended.
The event saw 20 contestants between the ages of 11 and 60
dancing, singing hip-hop, gospel and R&B. Among them was the
oldest contestant of the night, Maureen Kivitts (60) who won a lot
of awards in her heyday. Other contestants included the talented
and well known Escalators dancing group, the Walters Brothers,
Ettienne and Dwayne, who have their own band, Eloysious Goba
and Westa Brown who are part of the Faithful Singers Gospel
Group and Leilha Olifant who performed the Waka Waka dance
made famous by Shakira.
After round one, the top six performers were selected by the
judges and a lot of eyebrows were raised. The selected top six
were: Toysie “Jackson” Sauls who performed a Michael Jackson
dance, Eloysious Goba who sang an tune from Kenny Lattimore
with a gospel item, Clint of the Waka Waka and Westa Brown and
Demaine Walters who also performed a Michael Jackson dance.
Demaine Walters won the first prize of R1 000, Candy the
second prize (R500) and Toysie Sauls, a police officer, came third
(R250).
Ukhuseleko kwiingozi zomlilo
Andile nAyikA
Iintsapho ezininzi kwiindawo ngeendawo
zaseRhini kudala zizifumana zizingxwelerha
zeengozi zomililo. Izizathu zezingozi
zohlukile kwaye zishiya imeko imbi.
UJulia Dingana ominyaka ingama 60 ngomnye
wabantu abathi bazibonela ngawabo amehlo
Do’s and don’ts of clean water
For many locals tap water is unsatisfactory for drinking, some people say it has a bitter taste, some
believe the colour says it all while others complain about it's stickiness.
Olwethu Xabanisa compiled this report on the do's and don'ts of clean water, beginning with this list of
what you don’t want in your drinking water.
• Contaminants - harmful human-made chemical substances
that may have a harmful effect on our health, an example high
levels of cadmium which occur naturally in the ecosystem and
may also be introduced through human activities. Contaminants
may contain bacteria in them.
• Bacteria – these are tiny organisms that cannot be seen with
a human eye, they can cause typhoid fever, pneumonia, cholera
or tuberculosis.
• Heavy metals – metallic chemical elements which are toxic
or poisonous at low concentrations, these are natural components
of the earth's crust and cannot be degraded or destroyed.
Examples of these are copper, celenium and zinc.
• Impurities – substances inside a confined amount of liquid,
gas, or solid, which differ from the chemical composition of the
material or compound, for example ash, debris in metal and
leaf pieces.
• Parasites – organisms of different species where one organism,
the parasite, benefits at the expense of the host, some
examples of these are helminths, protozoa and trematodes.
Water purification
Water disinfection – A purification process that kills or removes
biological contaminants like (bacteria, viruses, protozoan, etc).
These are options of different ways for you to be able to
drink water that satisfies and quenches your thirst without having
to worry about what it could contain:
PURIFIES... This reverse osmosis machine can be used to
purify drinking water. Photo: Olwethu Xabanisa
REVERSE OSMOSIS uses a semi-permeable membrane made
out of polyimide that allows water to pass through it, in this
process getting rid of contaminants that are too large to pass
through it. As some fluids pass through the membrane, the
rest continues downstream rejecting contaminants away form
the membrane to the drain. This process uses pressure that
pushes the fluid through the membrane and inorganic chemicals
such as salts, metals and minerals are gotten rid of. Even
though reverse osmosis is effective in removing bacteria and
viruses, it is not recommended that you rely upon reverse osmosis
solely if your water is contaminated with bacteria or viviruses. This rather requires sediment and carbon pre-filtration to
prevent membrane fouling. Reverse osmosis works against
standard osmotic pressure, the process is fairly slow. The
reverse osmosis membrane should be replaced every two two
to three years.
According to Martin Davies, a senior agriculture and
fisheries scientist at the department of Ichthyology and
Fisheries at Rhodes University, the best way to purify
drinking water is by using reverse osmosis sometimes
referred to as hyper filtration. “If you can afford it this is
the safest way,” he says. This is used by premium bottled
water companies and reduces a very wide array of
contaminants.
The reverse osmosis machine can be purchased
at Gary's refrigeration and home appliances 10 Hill
Street Grahamstown or Pure Water 23 High Street
Grahamstown.
BOILING water is the best way to destroy parasites and
bacteria, but boiling at a very high temperature may concentrate
harmful contaminants.
Cloudy water should be filtered before boiling, coffee
filters, paper cottons and other filters are effective ways
of doing this. Bring the water to a full boil for at least
three to five minutes, covering the container will raise the
PURE DELIGHT... Clear water in a tank, which you could be
drinking. Photo: Olwethu Xabanisa
tempera- ture and destroy more bacteria. This will not remove
contaminants from the water but
will kill most of the
bacteria and parasites if the water
is left to boil longer.Boiling may
concentrate any harmful contaminants
that do not vaporise
as the relatively pure water vapour
boils off. This means that
if the water boils for a very long
period the relatively pure water will
vaporise and leave concentrated contaminants
behind, you might end up drinking this.
You can add bleach to the water to kill
bacteria but some people add too much and
this can be harmful. The appropriate way is
to add one spoon of bleach to every ten litres of
water.
DISTILLATION removes impurities from water. Usually
boiled in a chamber it causes water to vaporise
and the pure steam leaves the non volatile contaminants
behind. The steam moves to a different part
of the unit and cools back into its liquid state. It
then moves into a storage container and is ready
for drinking. This is one of the few ways to remove
nitrates, chloride and other salts that can’t be removed
by carbon filtration. Distillation is timeconsuming
and very expensive, it can take up
to five hours to produce four litres of drinking
water. Most home distillation units require
electricity, and will not function in an emergency
situation when electricity is not available.
BOTTLED WATER
can be convenient if you
can afford it or perhaps don’t have time to go
through the above mentioned processes. You
can purchase the water at any supermarket’s
cool drink section. Some companies may
claim that they get it from a natural spring.
In most cases it is just processed water that
is filtered, disinfected and most companies
use ozone (O
) a form of oxygen or ultraviolet
3
light as a final disinfecting agent.
Levels of residual chlorine found in it is
small at around around 00.2g per litre. It contains
minerals that are added back to it for better
taste. Bottled water is vital if you are away from
home and looking for something safer and better to drink. But
bacteria grows best in warm, moist areas and the wet, warm,
threaded cap of an unrefrigerated bottle of water is a perfect
place for bacteria to grow. Bacteria will begin to grow as soon
as you open the bottle. If the bacteria gets in your system, it can
cause problems with your digestive system.
To avoid this, one can refrigerate the water.
Wipe seal with a clean cloth after use
Avoid build up in the bottle cap
If your bottle is refillable, make sure it is well cleaned and
rinsed before refilling, you can clean the refillable water bottle
with warm water and a disinfectant. Don't forget to change the
water bottle regularly.
NATURAL SPRING WATER, as Grahamstown locals we are very
SPRING WATER... A local family uses the advantage of the
water from a natural spring. Photo: Olwethu Xabanisa
lucky to have another safer option! We are situated right next
to a natural spring at Coldstream Farm which is close to the N2
road that links to Port Elizabeth and Peddie.
This spring is popular in the Eastern Cape Province as people
from other towns come with their tanks and buckets to collect
this water. 'Holy water' is the name given to this natural
spring by regulars. If you have transport use that advantage and
go fill up your buckets with this free water that streams down
from the mountain.
There are no residential or industrial areas on this mountain
which means that there are less chances of this water being
polluted. Govan Tyler a 36-year-old man from Port Elizabeth
said, “I come here almost every week from PE to collect this
water, I have been doing this for the past eleven years and I
have never showed signs of sicknesses.” Natural spring water
also contains heavy metals from the clay soil.
RAIN WATER since it is less polluted than well water and free
of toxic chemical additives, such as chlorine and chloramines
found in water provided through municipalities it can be very
good for one's health.
Rainwater is full of minerals and the taste is very natural
and good too.
An easy way of collecting this water is by using rainwater
tanks which source it from the roof's gutters. Make sure that
your roof is clean as the water runs from the roof to the gutters
and straight to the tank.
A simple and inexpensive water filter can effectively remove
any contaminants normally found in rainwater including mosquitoes
and other small particles that might be in the water.
Lightning within thunderstorms can be a risk and can form acid
rain which has a low pH level.
All liquids that have pH levels less than 7 are considered to
be acidic. Unpolluted rain has a slightly acidic pH of about 5.2
but it also contains other chemicals such as carbon.
Phaphamani, Zolani and Extension 6. William Street had to be
cordoned off as a result of the heavy rains.
Very heavy rainfall and flooding was reported in Port Alfred
yesterday.
According to Roger Rowswell, the last time such heavy rain
was recorded within a 24 hour period was in February 2009,
when 48mm fell. Prior to that, 50mm fell in April 2008 and 67mm
in March 2007. “It is the lack of these high daily rainfalls that
have contributed to water courses drying up,” said Rowswell.
The highest monthly rainfall since 2006, was in February 2009,
where 185mm was recorded, followed by December 2007 with
115.7mm and January 2008 with 116.5mm. The last good wet
month was october 2009 with 127.8mm.
According to Rowswell, 2006 was a wet year, where 1 160mm
had fallen, which equates to an average of 96.7mm per month.
Rowswell’s rainfall measurements found that five of the 12
months recorded rainfalls of over 100mm, with August having
the highest (276mm) and May having the lowest of the five
wet months with 102mm. The subsequent three years then
produced less than average yearly rainfalls. “Recent annual
rainfall figures – in 2007 (688.4mm), 2008 (664.8mm) and 2009
(705.6mm) – are all below average,” said Rowswell.
Rowswell said that in recent years, even though rainfall
amounts have been below average, the storage dams have received
good inflow due to runoffs. “In 2005 annual rainfall was
709mm (below average) 77mm was recorded over three days, 5
to 7 November. In August 2006; 88mm fell on the third and 58mm
on the 25th,” said Rowswell. However, he said that further heavy
rains are needed to keep the storage dams at optimum levels.
“In August 2002, 206mm fell within six days and then in
September, 117mm over three days. It is this type of rainfall that
Grahamstown requires to fill our catchment dams.”
Agapanthus – superb summer stunners
No summer garden is complete
without rewarding agapanthus
– a versatile plant
that is both water wise and
wind- and heat-resistant.
Agapanthus are popular
plants for the garden, not
only because they are low
maintenance, but because
their beautiful flowers provide
a magnificent show from
spring right through to autumn.
Life is a garden filled
with beautiful agapanthus;
one plant is pretty, two even
better, but for maximum effect
plant agapanthus in
groups of five, seven or more.
Given sunshine and good
soil, these versatile perennials
can be grown in borders,
on slopes, in indigenous and
water-wise gardens, in broad
sweeps as ground covers and
in pots. Even when not in
flower, evergreen varieties
are useful on slopes, where
their strong, fleshy roots will
bind the soil. Eye-catching
white, powder- and sky-blue,
competition, being run in conjunction with the Grahamstown
Flower Festival, have announced the entrants
in the competition.
The garden competition is being co-ordinated
and sponsored by Pam Golding Properties in Grahamstown
and the judging process is being undertaken
by three landscape designers and horticulturists
Colour combinations
with agapanthus
Agapanthus will fit into
any colour scheme. White
would stand out in a twilight
garden, blue shades would
look good in a blue summer
border or in a blue-yellow
agapanthus with yellow euryops
daisy, yellow bulbine and
yellow gazanias would also be
effective. In indigenous gardens,
agapanthus are perfect
companions with summerflowering
bulbs of crocosmia,
galtonia, eucomis and
watsonia.
Agapanthus are also
striking with sedges or
phormiums, such as Yellow
Wave, and eyecatching
among whispering ornamental
grasses. They are attractive
with silver-grey foliage
plants such as artemisia, the
indigenous wild rosemary
(Eriocephalus africanus)
with aromatic foliage and tiny
white flowers, lavender and
giant-leafed cardoon.
Choose an agapanthus
• Low-growing varieties:
Miniature kinds are suitable
for edging paths, driveways
and borders, and adding colour
in rockery pockets and
pots. Double Diamond is
compact with double white
flowers, Lapis is free flower-
• Medium height varieties:
Try opal Sky with white
80cm stems, or 50cm-high
sky blue Peter Pan, Strawberry
Ice with white flowers
blushed with pink, and Silver
Star with light blue flowers
• Taller varieties: Tall varieties
are stunning when
grown in bold groups or
broad sweeps in the landscape.
Try new Black Pantha
with intense violet-blue almost
black flowers on 60cm
stems, and Blue Velvet with
dark violet-blue flowers on
metre-tall stems. The flowers
of Blue Ice are white with an
ice-blue base on 1.2m stems,
and Queen Mum has bi-colour
blue and white flowers on
1.2m stems.
• Variegated foliage: Agapanthus
with striped foliage are
a perfect foil for those with
plain green leaves. Summer
Gold (40cm) has striking yellow
and green variegated
leaves and lilac-blue flowers,
and Blue Zebra (50cm) has
green leaves with a cream
edge and light blue flowers.
Growing tips
A position in full sun and
soil enriched with compost
and well-rotted manure will
ensure an excellent show in
summer. Use a commercial
potting mix for containergrown
agapanthus. Deciduous
varieties are best where
heavy frosts occur, and it is
advisable to protect agapanthus
in cold gardens with a
thick layer of mulch or horticultural
fleece. When overcrowded,
divide after flowering,
and because they resent
disturbance, the divisions
should be of reasonable size.
Senior citizens enjoy breakfast
Andile nAyikA
On Friday morning senior citizens
gathered at the Public Library
activities centre, where the local
branch of Absa Bank prepared a special
breakfast for them. Sales manager at
the Grahamstown branch, Buli Mveleni
thanked the pensioners for attending and
briefly explained some of their services.
She said, “We are trying to bring back
to the community because without you we
would not have been the bank we are today.
We tend to focus on the youth and for-
Thought for the week
The transforming power of prayer
In Luke chapter 18 verses one to eight,
Jesus talks to his disciples about prayer.
In verse one it says: “Then Jesus told
his disciples a parable to teach them
that they should always pray and never
become discouraged.” The parable
Jesus used concerned a widow, a totally
disempowered person struggling
against a corrupt and dishonest justice
system. Through her total commitment
to her cause and persistence she wins
through, from her powerless position
get about the elderly and that they are the
pillars of our businesses and they need to
be shown love.”
Mveleni advised the pensioners to
build a culture of saving so as to avoid
bankruptcy and loan sharks. She told
them that the Money Builder and Sakhula
accounts are the most suitable channels
for their banking needs. Mveleni urged
them to approach the banking staff any
time for more details on their services and
that they will be always be at their service.
“If you can’t climb up Mount Everest,
we will come down and help you up,” she
she defeats the all powerful. The point
that Jesus is making is that if the widow
can transform an evil and wicked power
who does not want to co-operate through
sheer persistence, how much more will
God give us who loves us deeply if we too
are persistent in our prayer?
Richard Foster in his book Celebration
of Discipline tells us that, “to pray
is to change”. Prayer is what God uses
to transform us and the society around
us. In prayer we begin to think God’s
added. Branch manager, Maxine najoe
said: “Seniors citizens are important and
we would like to show them how we feel
about them.” najoe announced that Absa
will soon put additional ATMs in areas
such as Gold’s Town, Joza and Checkers.
In attendance was also Grocott’s Mail
General Manager, Louise Vale. Most of
the senior citizens were from McKaizer
and Ethembeni Old Age Homes and leading
the Ethembeni group was centre manager,
Grace ngcete who also shared her
experience as a loyal account holder at
the bank for many years.
Anglican Church speaks out against
Protection of Information Bill
StAff RepoRteR
THE Anglican Church of Southern Africa urges members of
the South African Parliament to “vote with their consciences”
on the Protection of Information Bill being considered by
legislators.
The church’s ruling Provincial Synod adopted a resolution
declaring its opposition to the Bill after a number of speakers
warned the church against what they saw as its failure to speak
out sufficiently on public issues. The priest who proposed the
resolution, Rev Drake Tshenkeng of the Diocese of Kimberley
and Kuruman, said in an interview after the synod debate that
he hoped members of Parliament would vote conscienciously
“instead of along party lines”.
Speaking during debate, Bishop Oswald Swartz of Kimberley
and Kuruman said that “one of the marks of the church is
to challenge unjust structures of society.” Warning of “the great
danger we are in if we keep silent,” he asked: “Is this inability
to speak because we are uncomfortable [with], or even afraid
of, our comrades who shared the trenches with us in the struggle
against apartheid – also because many of the people now in
authority are also Anglicans?”
Tshenkeng, who was detained, banned and forced into exile
after the killing of Steve Biko in 1977 told the synod the church
had been at the “forefront of public advocacy” during the apartheid
era. After liberation in 1994, he said, “there was joy, there
was happiness, there was rejoicing... It was a new era and of
course the church also changed gears. We were still enjoying
a honeymoon...
“But our honeymoon seems not to get to an end. It is a honeymoon
that seems to be going on and on. The church is being
slowly embedded within the status quo.”
thoughts after Him: to desire the things
He desires, to love the things he loves,
to will the things He wills. Progressively,
we are taught to see things from his
point of view. This is what transformation
is all about, a transformation that
will not only change us as individuals
but also society as well for the better.
So what are we waiting for? Let’s get
on our knees and pray.
The Rhodes Pianists and Chamber Orchestra collaborated
to present a fun-filled orchestra experience – The
Carnival of the Animals – for junior level learners from
different schools of Grahamstown.
On Wednesday, learners and educators from Kingswood
Prep, Graeme Junior, St Andrew’s Prep, Victoria Girls’ Primary
and Good Shepherd filled the Beethoven Room to capacity
to witness this narrative, fun musical experience. The Good
Shepherd learners was granted free entrance while the others
paid R10 each.
This was an initiative started by a group of music students
early this year to raise funds for the Rhodes Music department
to purchase a new piano. Each item was played in accordance
to classical lecturer, Gwyneth Lloyd’s witty narration of the
animals different funny characters. The introduction depicted
the grand opening of the carnival with sounds that almost produce
the real noise of live creatures.
With the use of violins, the clucking and pecking of hens
and roosters were depicted, while the stubbornness of a wild
donkey was portrayed with rapid passages on the pianos. The
characteristics of 14 animals were depicted as learners and
teachers were glued and almost hypnotised by the melody.
“The love and joy of music in the piece is accessible to the
younger ones and it allows them to hear the animals in the
music and also get to see the real instruments,” said senior
lecture at the department Catherine Foxcroft.
According to pianist and organiser, Theresa Dwyer they
have raised an amount of R4 460 and with a continuation of the
fundraising, they hope to reach R10 000 by next year.
The history of The Carnival
of the Animals
The Carnival of the Animals was composed by late French Romantic
composer, conducter, organist and pianist, Camille Saint-Saens
(1835-1921) while on vacation in 1886 for a private performance
by a chamber ensemble (two pianos and 11 other instruments),
and was played only once for his friends. However in 1921, in his
last will and testament, he allowed the piece to be published.
Today he is more remembered for this piece than for his other
compositions. The Carnival of the Animals is a 14-part work that
contains delightful musical portraits of various animals and alternates
with other pieces to an entertaining effect.
Lively music behind
the wheel
STAFF REPORTER
Research has shown
that people take more
time to perform mental
tasks to loud music, but listening
to certain music at the
correct volume can promote
alertness and prevent fatigue
while driving.
This is according to BP and
the Stay Alert, Stay Alive campaign
as part of their on-going
commitment to make our roads
safer by educating motorists
about which music is best to
listen to while behind wheel.
Many single vehicle collisions
(such as colliding with a tree)
on South African roads are as a
result of drivers being fatigued,
but listening to the ‘right’ music
can keep drivers alert and keep
fatigue at bay during long road
trips, says Noma Mazibuko of
Strategic Communications.
Glenda Zvenyika of BP
says, “We are a nation of music
lovers, but many motorists
take music to the extreme
while driving, not realising that
loud music can impair concentration
and reaction times.”
She refers to a Canadian study
where volunteers carried out
tasks while listening to levels
of noise varying from 53 decibels
(equivalent to an office
environment) to 95 decibels
(noise generated by an oil rig).
“Researchers found reactions
to be significantly decreased
at higher noise levels for both
physical and mental work,”
she says.
At 95 decibels, reaction
times to tasks that involve
decision making plummeted
by 20%. Earlier research by
the RAC Foundation, a British
motoring organisation, found
drivers were twice as likely to
skip a red light while listening
to music. “Drivers are at
even greater risk if they listen
to music with a pounding, repetitive
beat rather than more
vocally rhythmic tunes,” says
Zvenyika. “It is important that
drivers choose their music
carefully, and ‘incorrect’ music
has been shown to have
negative affects on a driver
as opposed to those with singalong
lyrics,” she says.
Studies have shown that
if music is above 60 beats
per minute, the heart rate
speeds up and blood pressure
increases. Listening to
opera and classical music has
a tendency to soothe and may
cause fatigue. So lively, melodic
sing-along type music is the
best bet as the driver is apt to
be more alert.
GREAT EFFORT... Battle for the ball continues during the recent friendly soccer tournament
organised by a group of Rhodes University third year journalism students organised for residents
The cry of vuvuzelas reverberated
through Ward 7 and 8 recently as youngsters
took part in a friendly soccer day.
The day was held as part of an initiative started
by a group of Rhodes University third year
journalism students to host a fun event for
the township youth. Teams were organised by
soccer enthusiasts living in Ward 7 and 8, with
a few players from the Assumption Sisters
Mission.
Players were split up into junior and senior
age groups and named their own teams.
Fans of famous teams were revealed by their
choice of names from team names such as
‘The Pirates’, ‘Bafana Bafana’ and ‘Ajax’. Two
games were played simultaneously, with each
team using one half of the field. Refereeing
the games were Thembalani File and Ahmed
Faraz Yusuf.
While the aspiring young soccer champions
played, members of the Muslim Student’s
Association, Adil Qudussi and Naeem Patel ran
MANAGEMENT of the Eastern Provice Rugby
Academy opening in Port Elizabeth next year,
visited Grahamstown last week as they travel
the province to identify talented rugby players
for the academy.
Robert Kempson, the 2009 EP forwards
consultant, is the academy manager and visited
schools in Grahamstown to scout for talented
players.
Kempson said they will approach matric
pupils this year for the academy, which opens
its doors in January 2011. Kempson said the
academy players will be educated through
NMMU and at the same time will be groomed
as rugby players for the EP senior side.
While the senior side is currently doing
well, Kempson said the academy will make
sure individuals are kept in the province and
maintained in the system. Over 140 players
originally from the Eastern Cape are currently
playing in the Currie Cup first and premier divisions
so the academy aims to keep the players
in the province.
a soccer clinic from the second field. During
the day, many children and teenagers sat and
watched or played in the soccer clinic. Others
chatted to the journalism students and played
games with them. Many posed for pictures for
the photojournalists.
Andile Nyathi, a learner from Ward 7, commented
on the day: “It is a good idea because
everyone likes to play soccer and to have
fun on the weekend. Today I think everyone
had fun.” Siya, a player for ‘The Tigers,’ said:
“I love soccer so I play it every day. It is fun to
play against new people.”
By mid-day, the champions for the seniors
and juniors had been named. The junior final
was won by team Bafana Bafana who beat Ajax
3-0. Team A were the winners of the senior division,
beating Team C 5-1. The winning teams
each received a cake. Team A players received
t-shirts while Bafana Bafana team members
each received a book. All the soccer players
received a hotdog and juice at the end of the
gathering. Everyone played clean, fair games
and enjoyed themselves immensely.
TALENT SEARCH... Staff from
the Eastern Province Rugby
Acedemy visited Grahamstown
schools last week as they
search for talented youngsters
to start at the academy which
The various Grahamstown schools visited
were: Kingswood College, Mary Waters,
Graeme College, PJ Olivier and St Andrew’s
College. While Kempson met with the various
rugby coaches at the schools, he said there
are a large number of talented players in Grahamstown
as well as in the Eastern Cape. The
academy will enroll two players per position,
but Kempson said it will be an ongoing search
and if someone is overlooked this year, plans
will be made to enroll them.
While Kempson has seen a number of
school players in action late in the season, he
will be aided by the teachers and coaches at
the various schools.
He said the first players will move from
the academy through to the senior teams after
three years and then they plan to top the Currie
Cup premier division. The academy consists
of Kempson as the academy manager, Narine
THE local Department of Social Development
engaged various schools in a one-day
sports tournament held at the JD Dlepu stadium
on Saturday. Nombulelo and Nathaniel
Nyaluza were put to the test against the Nemato
teams from Port Alfred and Kenton-on-
Sea in both soccer and netball. This initiative
was officially launched last year in Alexandria
as part of the department’s probation services,
with an intention to play a role in developing
the youth, especially those in conflict with
the law or at risk of being arrested. “We are
giving the youth a chance to play and have
fun because when they don’t involve themselves
in sports they will involve themselves
in bad habits. We are also showing them the
dangers that come with crime and we try to
bring hope to those who are still at school so
that they do not end up dropping out,” said
Mfundo Sipambo of the probation services at
the department.
Nombulelo 16-6 Nemato
Nombulelo wasted no time as they launched
attacks at the visitors from the early minutes
of the game. Brilliant passes from Nombulelo
saw them gradually penetrating into Nemato’s
half to score goals, courtesy of its powerful
attack force. Although Nemato displayed
great confidence, the home side walloped
them 16-6.
WILLOWS Cricket Club recently held their
AGM in Grahamstown to select their office
bearers for the 2010/2011 cricket season.
The club are competing in the Grahamstown
Cricket Board first league and their aim
is to win the league this season. There are also
a number of players representing the Eastern
Province rural side and a member of the club
was selected for the South African Rural team
last season.
Dennis Stuurman was re-elected as President
of the Club, with Jannie Coltman as the
Vice-President, Clinton Gill the Treasurer and
shaky Nyaluza defence from the early stages
goals. Victors, Nombulelo lifted their second
trophy in only two months.
Nemato 2-0 Nombulelo
In the early minutes, the two sides posed attempts
at each other but unfortunately they
all proved fruitless however minutes before
halftime the scoreboard was opened when
Nemato netted one in. Early in the second
half, Nombulelo missed their chance when
the ball was headed towards goals only for
the Nombulelo goalie to save. Good long passes
from Nemato saw them posing numerous
threats at the home side. From lack of communication
between the Nombulelo defence
and the goalie, Nemato took advantage and
capitalised, bringing the final score to 2-0.
Finals
Nemato 4-2 Kenton-on-Sea
The finals saw a coastal battle between
Nemato and Kenton on Sea, who had both
kicked the home teams out of the tournament.
As early as the first minute Kenton
scored an opener. This was followed by a long
range shot from Nemato that almost tricked
their opponents’ goalie as he failed to handle
the ball but it was later cleared. Deep into the
half, from a corner kick the Kowie boys’ attempt
at goal went margins above the posts.
In the early stages of the second half Nemato
turned the tables as they scored one in, making
it 2-1. After a sloppy Kenton defence, Nemato
took advantage but the shot in went
straight into the keeper’s hands. A minute
later, a penalty was awarded to Nemato who
netted their equaliser. This was followed by
two consecutive goals from them in the dying
minutes, stealing the game from Kenton.
The curtain came down
on the Grahamstown
High Schools League
with a flourish as Nombulelo
Secondary School and Kutliso
Daniels met in the finals
at Rhodes University’s
King Field.
Both teams overcame
strong challenges as Nombulelo
dispatched Mary Waters,
TEM Mrwetyana and
Velile High on the way to the
top while Kutliso Daniels saw
off Ntsika, Velile, and Mary
All teams were in high
spirits throughout the tournament,
having received new
Adidas kits and Mitre match
balls from Rhodes Sport,
courtesy of the Lotto final – so
the stakes were very high this
time around.
The final kicked off with
referee of the day Andrew
Lowndes fully in charge of
proceedings. Nombulelo went
into the final as the favourites
and didn’t disappoint as they
made their intentions clear
within the first ten minutes
of the match, bombarding
Kutliso’s goal area from all
angles.
Khutliso’s defence finally
gave in about 25 minutes from
kickoff when Lelethu Makile
was set through by Malibongwe
Makonika’s pass to get one
on one with the keeper – a
simple chip over the keeper
was enough to put Nombulelo
into a lead.
The score line was 1–0 to
Nombulelo at halftime.
The second half started
slowly with Nombulelo toying
around with their opponents
and completely dominating
the match – Kutilso seemed
content with keeping the
scoreline to a respectable 1–0
to Nombulelo. However, that
was not to be, as the main
Seamers Haya and Stamper
and troubled the Salem batsmen
by picking up three wickets
apiece. Makana Sona batted
second and got off to a good
start with Mtunzi Antoni leading
from the front with some
aggressive batting. Antoni was
also the top scorer for his side
with a well played 48 runs.
He was well supported by
Haya with a patient 38 runs.
Makana lost wickets at regular
intervals and in the end struggled
but managed to reached
the target with eight wickets
down. Makana Sona will now
a derby match on Sunday at
EP rural side
to face
Midlands
THE Eastern Province (EP)
rural team will open their
season against Eastern
Province Midlands in the
South African Rural Cricket
Association (Sarca) fixture
encounter at Manley Flats
Cricket Ground on Saturday.
The EP side will play seven
games during this season of
the Sarca Competition with
five home games and two
away games. The top five
teams in each regional section
of the competition will
qualify for the national Sarca
week in February 2011 in
Nelspruit.
The team’s selection
was based on the performances
of the players during
the three league games
they have played so far in
the Grahamstown Cricket
Board (GCB) 1st league
competition.
Kingswood and St Andrews
colleges, which also
compete in the GCB 1st
league were not eligible for
selection as they are playing
in the schools’ league. The
EP rural side is hoping to get
off to a good start this season
and do well again. During
last year’s Sarca National
Week they finished third.
Andrew Marshall, Convenor
of selectors for the EP
side said: “Actually, It was
very difficult to select the
team because a lot of players
are scoring runs and taking
wickets in the league, but it’s
just good for our cricket in
general as this shows that it
is in a healthy state. We will
work on a squad system that
will be rotated and players
will have to perform to stay
on the side, I want to make
it clear that no place in the
team is guaranteed and
players have to work hard to
make the team.”
The EP team is as follows:
Mtunzi Antoni (Makana
Sona), Brandon Handley
(Cuylerville), Andrew Bowker
(Southwell – Captain)
Kevin Bennett (Southwell),
Steven Cornall (Cuylerville),
Eldrique Gouws (Willows),
Brent Emslie (Cuylerville
– Wicket-keeper), Melville
Daniels (Willows), Dough
Nupen (Rhodes Rhodents),
John Tarr (Southwell)
Asi Budaza (Makana Sona),
Lucius Jordaan (Willows -
12th man), Andrew Marshall
(Manley Flats – Manager)
and Gareth Von Hoeslin
