In Memoriam
Carl Robert Beaver:
April 1, 1959 – December 18, 2006
Carl was a coral reef scientist researcher and
teacher first and foremost. For the greater part of
his career he was a mentor and instructor to many
that crossed his path in lecture halls and laboratories
of Texas A & M University in Corpus Christi,
Texas. He taught many and was very well thought
of by his horned toad colleagues. He took great
pride and enjoyment in setting up field trips to the
Mexican reefs. Often he drove a vehicle or sailed
down the Gulf of Mexico to Vera Cruz and other
venues. He was rich with friendships from these
days on the Mexican reefs.
Carl made a major career change when he took a
job with the State of Florida as the manager of the
coral reef monitoring group at the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg. Here,
it was not teaching so much as coordinating a complex
and multi-faceted research and monitoring
Demonstration of the CoralWatch
and Dive Professionals, by
Foundation, and Dave Logan,
2:00 – 2:30PM
REEF Volunteer Fish Survey Project
and Database, by Christy Pattengill-
Semmens, Reef Environmental Education
Foundation (REEF)
project in the Florida Keys. Some of us had the
pleasure and privilege of working with Carl and
learned his passions and pleasures.
Carl nurtured and trained a group of younger scientists.
The challenge of laboring under the constraints
of a state agency was challenging, and Carl
was able to focus on the goal of excellence in the
science products. He persevered in spite of
weather, gear, and bureaucratic hurdles. His memory
should be inspiration to us all. Peace Carl.
As we participate in the 11th International Coral
Reef Symposium, reflect on the scientists that have
passed on and the great legacy of coral reef research
that has graced the halls of the symposiums
that preceded this one. Although we know a lot,
there is still much to do.
