The International Coral Reef Initiative is a unique<br />

public-private partnership that brings toge<strong>the</strong>r governments,<br />

international organisations, scientific entities<br />

and non-governmental organisations committed<br />

to reversing <strong>the</strong> global degradation of coral reefs and<br />

related ecosystems, such as mangrove <strong>for</strong>ests and seagrass<br />

meadows, by promoting <strong>the</strong> conservation and<br />

sustainable use of <strong>the</strong>se resources <strong>for</strong> future generations.<br />

Since its establishment in 1995, ICRI has been<br />

a driving <strong>for</strong>ce behind scientific, governmental and<br />

civil society ef<strong>for</strong>ts to protect coral reefs and related<br />

ecosystems. The ICRI approach is to provide a plat<strong>for</strong>m<br />

<strong>for</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation sharing, as well as to mobilize<br />

governments and a wide range of o<strong>the</strong>r stakeholders<br />

in an ef<strong>for</strong>t to improve management practices, in-<br />

<strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong> members of <strong>the</strong> Initiative to meet and<br />

progress discussions relating to <strong>the</strong> international coral<br />

reef agenda. The membership will receive reports<br />

from partners and committees on recent activities<br />

and review ICRS outcomes to determine where ICRI<br />

might focus in <strong>the</strong> future.<br />
