Discover the delights of the season in Germany and Austria
“Welcome, young and old, to my little community of wood and cloth.” These are the
words that open the Nuremberg Christmas Market, spoken by the Christkind. Though
the iconic representative of the market is named for the infant Jesus, she—yes, she—
is a pretty girl dressed as a crowned angel. All over Germany, the Christkind is a symbol
of the holiday’s magic.
Main River
This cruise takes you to some of the most famous and delightful of the holiday markets
in Central Europe. At each market, you’ll fi nd wooden stalls displaying traditional crafts
that range from quirky little characters made of fruit and dressed in Bavarian
costume to beautifully carved and painted Nativity fi gures. You’ll also fi nd exquisite
ornaments and fi ne contemporary crafts, along with fairy-tale villages decked in holiday
fi nery. Sparkling lights illuminate ancient cathedral squares, and the sound of children’s
laughter mingles with carols. Sample Linzer torte in the city where it was invented; see
Vienna at its most magical.
Celebrate the season in a new way as you rove through old lands, and remember, as the
Christkind says, “While this market’s splendor is fl eeting, the joy it brings is eternal.”
Who will enjoy this cruise: Those looking to experience Europe at its most magical
will enjoy the chance to discover the delightful holiday traditions and treats of
Germany and Austria, and to fi nd those special gifts for loved ones back home.
over 200 wooden stalls filled with signature toys and
glittering gifts. Enjoy the festive atmosphere enhanced
by the delicious aromas of gingerbread and glühwein
magnificent stained-glass windows; the Town Hall;
local specialties such as dumplings with vanilla sauce?
The stalls of the Christmas Market are set up around
St. Stephan’s Cathedral, Passau, Germany
the 500-year-old Neupfarrkirche and in front of the
want to visit one of the oldest restaurants in Germany,
die Historische Wurstküche (the Historic Sausage
Kitchen); it supplied food to the men who built that
12th-century bridge, so it is probably the world’s
oldest hot dog stand. The historic quarter not only
