With new environmental legislation in Europe and movements by the OEMs and now the aftermarket in North America, the time for change is upon us. 

WURTH USA now offers an expanded line of steel and zinc wheel weights as a greener alternative without sacrificing important characteristics such as 

retention and corrosion resistance. Switching lead-free alternatives will allow each of us to reduce the impact of lead accumulation in our environment. 

These weights have the same functionality, appearance, and fit characteristics as conventional wheel weights. These non-lead weights are designed and 

produced for cars with both steel and alloy wheels, and are coated with a protective coating to ensure corrosion resistance.

(NLFWWI) encourages the transition from the use of lead for wheel weights to lead-free alternatives. 

WURTH USA is a proud partner and plans to reduce its use of lead by almost 50% by the Fall of 

2011. In addition, WURTH USA plans to increase the amount of recycled lead recovered from our 

customers by 50% by the Fall of 2011.

Program. With collection boxes and return stickers to handle all of your used wheel weights, we

There is growing concern for lead wheel weights and lead’s impact on the environment. Europe has already mandated the elimination of lead and the 

U.S. EPA is considering similar measures. To ensure the market has an effective alternative, WURTH USA is offering adhesive wheel weights made from the

A typical vehicle contains between 200 and 250 grams of lead in wheel weights. The majority of wheel weights 

currently in use are clip-on types that are attached at the horn of a wheel’s rim; however some new aluminum 

rims require adhesive weights due to their shape. When these weights fall off onto the roadway, they are 

broken down over time and get absorbed into the ground and drinking water. Studies have shown that lead 

deposition from lead wheel weights is a significant and previously not quantified source of lead being released 

to the environment. 1 

Handling lead wheel weights can lead to health problems. 

Lead is a very toxic element, that can cause a variety of physical effects at low dose levels. Brain damage, kidney 

damage, and gastrointestinal distress are seen from short-term exposure to high levels of lead. Long-term exposure 

to lead in humans results in high blood pressure and hypertension, central nervous system disorders, kidney damage, 

and Vitamin D metabolism issues. 2
