Why Steel and Zinc?
With new environmental legislation in Europe and movements by the OEMs and now the aftermarket in North America, the time for change is upon us.
WURTH USA now offers an expanded line of steel and zinc wheel weights as a greener alternative without sacrificing important characteristics such as
retention and corrosion resistance. Switching lead-free alternatives will allow each of us to reduce the impact of lead accumulation in our environment.
These weights have the same functionality, appearance, and fit characteristics as conventional wheel weights. These non-lead weights are designed and
produced for cars with both steel and alloy wheels, and are coated with a protective coating to ensure corrosion resistance.
NLFWWI Partner Your Advantages
The National Partnership for Environmental Priorities National Lead Free Wheel Weight Initiative
(NLFWWI) encourages the transition from the use of lead for wheel weights to lead-free alternatives.
WURTH USA is a proud partner and plans to reduce its use of lead by almost 50% by the Fall of
2011. In addition, WURTH USA plans to increase the amount of recycled lead recovered from our
customers by 50% by the Fall of 2011.
Superior coating for corrosion
resistance.
Compete disposal and recycling service provided by WURTH USA!
We comply with all environmental standards!
Lead is considered a hazardous material to the environment. As a result, the disposal
of used wheel weights has become a concern to large volume users of wheel weights. Not to mention
the clutter and mess caused by used wheel weights and lack of inventory control.
As a service to our customers WURTH offers a Used Wheel Weight Recycling
Program. With collection boxes and return stickers to handle all of your used wheel weights, we
relieve you of the task of properly complying with approved disposal methods.
Our sales representative will perform this task for you. Your company can avoid common
problems, such as discarded weights around the wheel balancing equipment and used product
being re-installed on one of your customer’s vehicles.
Exact fit to the rim contour for
superior retention.
• Increased productivity
• Reduced downtime
• Fewer “comebacks”
• Improved organization
• OEM quality
• Environmentally-conscious

There is growing concern for lead wheel weights and lead’s impact on the environment. Europe has already mandated the elimination of lead and the
U.S. EPA is considering similar measures. To ensure the market has an effective alternative, WURTH USA is offering adhesive wheel weights made from the
most widely used material in the automotive industry: steel. The high cost and low density of composite plastics and dynamic media make steel the only logical
choice for a non-lead adhesive weight. These weights have the same functionality, appearance, and fit characteristics as conventional adhesive wheel
®
weights. These non-lead weights are designed and produced for cars with both steel and alloy wheels, and are coated with our Wheel Protectors coating.
A typical vehicle contains between 200 and 250 grams of lead in wheel weights. The majority of wheel weights
currently in use are clip-on types that are attached at the horn of a wheel’s rim; however some new aluminum
rims require adhesive weights due to their shape. When these weights fall off onto the roadway, they are
broken down over time and get absorbed into the ground and drinking water. Studies have shown that lead
deposition from lead wheel weights is a significant and previously not quantified source of lead being released
to the environment. 1
Handling lead wheel weights can lead to health problems.
Lead is a very toxic element, that can cause a variety of physical effects at low dose levels. Brain damage, kidney
damage, and gastrointestinal distress are seen from short-term exposure to high levels of lead. Long-term exposure
to lead in humans results in high blood pressure and hypertension, central nervous system disorders, kidney damage,
and Vitamin D metabolism issues. 2
Lead can lead
adults to suffer
from 2
• Reproductive problems
(in both men and women)
• High blood pressure and
hypertension
• Nerve disorders
• Memory and concentration
Lead Wheel Weight Quick Facts 2
• There are 200 million autos and light trucks on the nation’s
roadways.
• Sixteen million new autos are produced annually in the
United States.
• An average of 4.5 ounces of lead is clipped to the wheel rims of
every automobile in the United States.
• Approximately 50 million pounds of lead is used annually to
produce tire weights worldwide in autos and light trucks.
• 75% is recycled by secondary lead smelters.
• 25% (or 12.5 million pounds annually) is uncontrolled or
unmanaged in the environment.
• 13% of the 12.5 million pounds (1.6 million pounds) is lost when
wheel weights fall off during normal driving conditions (e.g., hitting
a pot hole).
