Gerber.
Annual Employee
Appreciation BBQ
The Montreal terminal held its Annual Employee
Appreciation BBQ on July 16th. The festivities began in the
wee hours of the morning and lasted late into the evening.
Despite the relatively cool, cloudy weather, the employee
turnout was good. The food and beverages were fantastic,
and, as usual, Scott Jones did a fine job manning the BBQ.
As in the past, some employees brought their children
with them to participate in this event. It was interesting to
have two antique Erb trucks on display in the yard
commemorating Erb’s 45th Anniversary, especially the copy
of the first truck that got the company going 45 years ago.
The kids, both young and old, really enjoyed them. Thank
you, Wayne, for getting them down here.
To further add to this festive mood, balloons and
sunglasses were handed out to those in attendance. I would
like to thank the ladies from the Erb store for displaying the
new Erb fashions, and, as is always the case, the Senior
Management who took the time to spend the day with us
as well, Wayne Baechler, Kevin Shantz and Floyd Gerber.
P.S. Wayne Baechler a remis TOUS les prix.
The day started with rain early in the morning but then it
cleared up and the rain stopped. People from Provigo and
Sobeys and other customers were phoning Réjean Vennes to
find out if the BBQ was still on. Bill Breese and Tim Zehr
were the cooks, while I peeled onions, made sure that
everyone had all they needed, and had a good time. We
had a good turn out of over 100 people. A few employees
came with their families, and the balloons and sunglasses
were a big success. We had an opportunity to mingle with
the
Réjean Vennes’ employees and they all appreciated the door
prizes. It was a good day and well appreciated by all, (hey
it’s a day out of the office), looking forward to next year.
They tell me that weather comes and goes in cycles, and, of
course, there is a list of reasons why as long as my long
underwear, but despite the reasoning of said experts, Blah is
just Blah. We needed a good hot one for a boat load of
reasons but all we got was why my fish didn’t bite, the
reason my corn didn’t grow, and the odd recipe for green
tomatoes - all apparently related to the lack of required
sunlight! But, to those clouds, there was a parting or a silver
lining. Did I mention the only two weeks of sun were on my
holidays?
In a nutshell, we kept our cool! Nothing major and
nothing we couldn’t handle. We continued another safe
summer with golf and our BBQ. Business was steady and
our new yard seems to progress with steady upgrades.
some time. Welcome back, Ken.
Many congratulations again to all of you from all of us
Hello from Ottawa
Well, summer has come and gone again. A summer that
brought a few changes here in the nation’s capital. Our yard
has seen the biggest change. Anyone visiting our terminal
during the month of August would have noticed a big hole
in the ground, where the fuel tanks used to be. Gone are
the days of just parking your truck at the end of your day.
Now we need to fuel the trucks down the road. This did not
go over too well at first, but after running the reefers dry a
couple of times, the drivers got used to the idea of fueling
before calling it a day. Personnel wise, we welcomed Ray
“drive shaft” Bourdon to the driver pool. Driveshaft comes
off the dock and after a few rough days, has fit in nicely. Jeff
Delahunt filled the vacancy on the dock. Jeff joins his dad
and uncle here at Erb. We missed our terminal manager for
a few weeks this summer, Ray had open-heart surgery.
Happy to say he is back, and doing really well. How does it
go, oh yeah, only the good die young. So I guess Ray will be
around for a while yet. Lori filled in during the absence with
the help of temp, Shannon. The boys would like to thank
Lori for bringing in Shannon, her hard work did not go
unnoticed.
Summer also brought a few activities for our terminal.
The first being a go-cart race that was billed “18 truck
drivers, 80 km/h go carts, no safety bonuses”. John (I’m
going to win) Decuysscher, our night shunter, was the
eventual winner. No one can put a trailer in the door as
quickly as John.
PAGE 26
go-carting.
Frank and his new wife
at 25th Anniversary
Dinner.
There are plans to do it again in the fall. We had our
annual BBQ in August, with all the usual fanfare. A few of us
went to the Montreal golf tournament. Scott and the boys
do a great job with that event. US driver, Roger Steepe, took
part in a truck show in July and finished a strong third. Just
ask him and he will tell you all about it, again and again
and again.
Frank (I’m in a hurry) Grenier was welcomed into the
quarter century club this year. He was treated to dinner and
received his gift. Most of us would probably go out and
have a beer to celebrate, but not Frank. He goes out and
gets married that same week. Congrats Frank, on both
accounts.
Our terminal also finished its sixth year of work place
safety. With all the heavy lifting and carrying of freight, this
is an amazing accomplishment. Hats off to all the dock staff
and the driver pool for working safely again this year. Also
thanks Barry, for being careful not to hurt his fingers,
punching into the computer.
Some of you have noticed that our antique trucks are
going around to each terminal to celebrate our 45th
Anniversary. If anyone would like to see more antiques, just
make the trip here to Ottawa. We have finally said goodbye
to two of our oldest, Eileen (I lean) and Old Smoke. And
there was much rejoicing.
Leaf fan waiting for cup!
Well, it seems like the hockey rivalry between terminals
will need to be put on hold this year. Receiving our LTL’s
from Toronto was quite comical at times. We don’t need to
go any further than our own terminal to see this battle. The
Canadiens’ calendars in the office and the Maple Leaf mugs,
remind us every day that not all people can be smart.
Summer has come and gone and I’m sure by the time we’re
reading this - winter will be upon us.
Back in May, we took part in the Big Bike for Heart &
Stroke. Because of the inclement weather that day (pouring
rain) we didn’t actually ride the bike, but we did have fun
raising money for Heart & Stroke and enjoying the team
spirit.
The sun did come out for our 2nd Golf Tournament in
June. Manuel & Angela Huezo and Wayne & Christa Fortes
(JMS rep) made up the winning team this year and will get
their names on the trophy. Thanks to all of our generous
customers, once again, everyone enjoyed a prize.
In July, our customers, employees and their families
enjoyed the 45th Anniversary BBQ with the race car. Gerry &
Dwayne kept everyone happy with great food off the BBQ.
Karen Buhr joined us with her traveling clothes show. Tim
Zehr and Wayne Baechler also celebrated with us.
Newest members of our Thunder Bay family are: Dave
Tinkler, Albert Gladu and Dave Erb. Welcome!
By the time you read this it will be old news but for
today it’s sad news. Tomorrow (Sept 30) will be Wilson
Milley’s last day in Thunder Bay. He’s moving on down to
Southern Ontario to be the Terminal Manager in Barrie. We
all wish him and his family the very best. I’m sure by now
he’s settled into his new position and enjoying it. He’ll be
truly missed by all of his friends in Thunder Bay.
Moving into Wilson’s position as Dispatcher/OS&D is
Steve Pethick. I’m sure a lot of you know Steve as one of our
highway drivers for over a year now. Steve seems to be
making the transition quite smoothly and I’m sure he’ll do a
swell job. We wish him success!
Hope everyone enjoys a safe, happy winter, holiday season.
Congratulations to Erb Transport on forty-five years of
successful business and thank-you very much for the
commemorative 45th Anniversary gift...it will be well
cherished. A special congratulations goes out to Erb Trenton
on achieving 10 years No Loss Time Due To Injury...way to
BBQ on Friday, August 27, 2004 - another big success. A
sincere thank you to Erb Transport for giving us this special
and memorable day. On behalf of Erb Trenton, we wish to
thank the hard working Chefs Al McInroy and John Verkuyl,
of the race car, food, and clothing...it sure was a long haul.
Congratulations to John O’Malley our Driver Services
and John Van Gemeren our inhouse Erb
Mechanic...you guys Rock!!! On the other hand, we would
like to say a sad goodbye and thank you to Glenda Quinn
who has been with the company for many years. She will
be missed by all. A big welcome to the many new faces who
have joined the Erb Team. Also, a big thank you Terry
Bowness from the Trenton Terminal for being the Erban
Terry.
Over the summer, the Erb Trenton employees were
involved in hosting three charitable tournaments. The first
was The Glen McInnes Memorial Golf Tournament that
raised approximately $1,400. All proceeds went to the
New meaning to a “Float Position” in the Peterborough Flood!
Belleville General Hospital Cancer Clinic Oncology
Department. Glen McInnes could not speak highly enough
of the people there who helped him and many others fight
their battles. It sure was a great turnout and a fun day for
all. Thanks to all the people who took part and shared the
laughter and good times. To the organizers of this special
event, Ernie Weese, Earlene Day, Bud McInnes and Stewart
Boyce we would like to thank you for this unforgettable
day...great job guys!
The next charitable tournament of the summer was the
4th Annual Two Left Feet Ball Tournament which raised
$450.00 for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Foundation.
Please read Tony Brennen’s report in this issue.
Third, and finally, our last charity tournament of the
summer the Annual Two Fools Golf Tournament raised
$2,200 to date for the Cancer Society. We would like to
thank all our suppliers and customers for donating many
great prizes. It sure takes thoughtful people to create great
events that can make a difference in the lives of many. A big
thanks goes out to Marc & Sherrill Lamoureux for organizing
and hosting this extraordinary occasion. We had a great
turnout and couldn’t have asked for better weather along
with the comfort of caring and sharing people. Fantastic job,
Marc and Sherrill!!!
Erb Trenton has a newly renovated drop yard at one of
our largest customers located at the Trenton Cold Storage
facility PPL North. This well lit, easy access, drop yard is
intended for the storage of all our non LTL trailers.
Bruce Sills went above and beyond the call of duty by
taking off his socks and shoes, rolling up his pant legs and
getting knee deep into his work. On
Wednesday, July 14th, 2004, at
approximately 5 p.m., the big flood
of Peterborough had begun,
horrifying people as their businesses
and homes were damaged, and
personal belongings destroyed by the
ravishing flood waters of the
Otonabee River. Approximately,
160mm to 170mm of rain fell
overnight and did not quit until the
following morning around 10 a.m.
when it turned into a drizzle. It took
three to four days for the water to
clear away. The city was in a state of
emergency with businesses closed
and schools cancelled. Erb lent a
helping hand to Peterborough by transporting a load of
special documents out of a library to be taken to Montreal
for safety. Loblaws Peterborough was closed for one week
because of the roof caving in, and Holiday Inn is still
working on repairs from the flood. Bruce Sills, our
Peterborough straight truck driver saw first hand the
devastation left in its wake. Bruce said that the washout
looked like a war zone, furniture was seen along the sides of
the road, and debris was floating freely down one of the
main streets in town. 95% of Peterborough is cleaned up
but they still have lots of work to totally repair the damages
that Mother Nature left behind. In the picture as you can
see, there was approximately 5 1/2 feet of water just below
the bottom of the box of the straight truck that fell to four
feet within an hour. Bruce mentioned one of the employees
had grabbed a kayak that was on display in the store and
ventured out into the loading docks where he paddled
around just to liven up the atmosphere a little. Thanks to
Bruce Sills and his trainee Ray Lake for the excellent work
and job well done in getting the product to the customer in
such extreme conditions.
Well folks...time to prepare ourselves for the four letter
word...yeah that’s right SNOW. Christmas will be here
before we know it and the next Erban Report will be out in
full force in the spring. Until next time...Asta La Vista,
If it was only that easy to ensure perfect conditions for
baseball, but it isn’t and we found out at this year’s Two Left
Feet Ball Tournament. Even though we were all soaked to
the bone, it didn’t put a damper on the attitudes and spirits
of those who came out. In all, we were able to raise $450.00
after costs for the Big Brothers and Sisters Foundation. Due
to the difficulties of hall and diamond bookings, I apologize
and hope it did not interfere with anyone being able to
attend. Please watch for the Tournament postings next year,
it will be posted in all terminals in January 2005.
This year we had many businesses donate items for
prizes. A special thanks to the Independent Grocers in
Trenton for their donation of a propane BBQ. This is the 2nd
year they have donated a prize to raffle. The lucky winner
was Kimmy Noble (remember Keith it’s her BBQ). Also to
Labatts, who donated softball bags for the winning team,
and to Erb for the number of donations and the use of a
straight truck. Finally to Courtney’s Distributing who donated
all the food, thank you, one and all.
Now, a special thank you to two women who did a lot to
Excerpts from Viola Erb’s article “Erb Transport’s Early Years” that appeared in Vol. 1, Issue 2 June 1987 Erban Report.
Road building being seasonal, we tendered for the work of sanding highways in the winter. We won the tender for not
only one truck, but two. We again purchased a used dump truck in Toronto. Next morning early with our little ones
sleeping in their Dr. Dentons, we followed Vern in our 1956 Pontiac to Stratford. We had an appointment to get the
sanding equipment mounted on the truck. Following the truck, I noticed pieces of metal falling out of the truck. Not
knowing what it was, I passed Vern and stopped him. That was the wrong thing to do, since that metal was the battery. I
will always remember Vern’s reply as he wiped his brow. “Oh, no, the only thing good in the junk heap, and now it’s gone
too”. Now what do we do, a truck won’t run far without a battery. Vern went up to Elgin Roth Transport in Topping to
borrow a chain and you guessed it. I towed that big truck to the outskirts of Stratford with our 1956 Pontiac.

Canadian Operations Happenings!
I guess it’s safe to say there is no end of issues when it
comes to the trucking world! Despite all the successes we’ve
had this year, new and unique challenges move in to take
their place. Wayne Stock, the entire pallet staff, and our
determined sales staff did a super job getting the message
out to all employees and customers regarding our new pallet
program. I sincerely believe this is one of the most successful
programs our company has initiated in recent years to tackle
this age-old problem of pallet control.
At the time I’m writing, the new Montreal terminal is
nearing completion, and I know everyone there and the
entire operation throughout, is excited but will miss the “old
swamp” as it was affectionately known on Hymus Blvd. I am
very impressed by the layout and feel our design team did a
great job matching salmon colours with earth tones.
Unfortunately, I had to leave early when that meeting was
held, so can’t take any credit for it.
Congratulations to Wilson Milley on accepting the job in
Barrie as our new Terminal Manager. After spending several
years in Thunder Bay, where he married his wife, Helen, and
started a family, they are making a bold move south to join
the rest of us in the heat and humidity. He has a great team
in Barrie, and I know he’ll do a great job.
John Gyoroky, our Toronto Dock Supervisor, has taken
on a new position, as well, as our Corporate Dock Manager,
Logos 1959 -2004!
and will be getting around to all the terminals eventually.
These are just a few of the successes we’ve experienced
recently. On the downside, we continue to experience
difficulty in hiring drivers, although most recently we have
seen an increase in solid applicants. We are working on new
strategies for attracting safe and professional drivers. I know
the border issues, waiting times, etc., continue to be a
challenge for our southbound drivers. We can only hope
things will get better. Bruce Jantzi and his staff have done a
super job staying on top of all the latest challenges that
have come through the US homeland security programs.
Also, at this time, Barb Davie is recovering from a
serious operation and hopes to return to work soon. I want
to thank Wanda Zilki for doing a great job covering for Barb
in the interim
We look forward to a busy fall season.
Erb International Inc.
Many of the articles I’ve written for the Erban report about
Erb International Inc. have included changes happening at
the US/Canada Border. This year has been no exception. We
get accustomed to one change, and they seem to very
quickly find something else to change. Last fall, we had to
make changes to our staffing levels because of the new
Bioterrorism Act which has a direct effect on FDA (Food and
Drug Administration) that controls all food shipments to the
US. There were four levels of compliance implemented at
different time frames with the final compliance level effective
on Aug 17, 2004. Before Aug 17, 2004, if there was any
information missing on the prior notice the shipper or
carriers were given a warning. Since Aug 17, 2004 if the
shipment is not in compliance there is a 99% chance the
truck will be sent back to Canada. November 15, 2004,
there will be more changes implemented by Customs and
Border Protection for advanced Cargo information. This
means all paperwork must be done either with a PAPS or a
line release (BRASS). If a PAPS is sent, the paperwork must be
submitted one hour before arrival at the Port. If the driver
has a line release, the driver and the company must be FAST
approved. Neither one of these items should have a direct
effect on us because we always have our paperwork
submitted via PAPS more than an hour in advance and we
don’t have any shipments with line release. However, we
could be affected indirectly if we are behind a noncompliant
carrier/driver.
Another Customs initiative for the new year is the ACE
(Automated Commercial Entry) program. This will be an
electronic paperless Inward Manifest program where the
Carrier submits all paperwork to Customs via EDI or through
a Web portal. Erb International Inc has volunteered to
become involved in this pilot project, which will begin
sometime in January 2005.
We are experiencing large volumes of freight moving to
the US again this fall. Up to the end of July, our normal
volumes were 320-360 loads per week to the US. The 1st
week of August someone turned on the tap and we went to
420 loads per week to the US. Now the handle is broken,
and we can’t turn off the flow. There seems to be fewer
trucks and more freight. I believe part of the capacity issues
are fewer US based carriers coming to Canada for various
reasons. The US economy has strengthened, so there is lots
of freight to haul at home, and with all the security issues at
the Border why would US companies even bother trying to
train and qualify drivers to cross the Border? The driver
shortage is real and we are experiencing it first hand. If you
know any good drivers, make sure you send them our way,
you can even earn some extra cash for the referrals!
We had new challenges in 2004, and I’m sure 2005 will
have something different. The good thing is we always
overcome and move on to the next one. Thank you to
everyone for your continued support, wishing everyone a
Happy and Prosperous New Year
Hello, from Erb Expedite! We’ve had some personnel
changes and additions since our last submission. Bridget
(Irene) Diebold decided not to return at the end of her
parental leave in May, so she can stay home with her
daughter and son. I just heard from her today and she, and
her husband Mark, will be adopting another son at the end
of September. We wish the Diebold family all the best.
Laura Bisch was selected as the full time Traffic Co-ordinator
to fill Bridget (Irene) Diebold’s position. Laura has been
doing a fantastic job since October of last year when she first
joined Erb Expedite to cover for the parental leave. It is a
demanding and responsible job, one that doesn’t always
end when you leave the office. Every other week, Erb
Expedite dispatchers are on call and carry a pager in order to
respond to our customers’ and drivers’ calls 24/7. At times,
the stress level is high, but Laura always manages to
maintain a positive attitude and is quick with a smile or a
kind word. We’re glad to have her as part of our team. At
the beginning of June, owner-operator, Luis Cordeiro from
Mississauga, came on board. He has proven to be a great
asset, always willing to go wherever, whenever at a
moment’s notice. Dale Schnurr was hired at the end of
September as a straight truck company driver based in New
Hamburg. He has adapted quickly in the short time he’s
been with us and actually helped us out of a major jam on
his very first day! Welcome guys, and keep up the good
work!
We now have two company straight trucks in our fleet.
The dedicated straight truck work we have, along with the
expedite calls we receive for a straight truck, has been a
challenge to cover. The biggest obstacle to overcome?....
FINDING DRIVERS of course! With the help, over the past
several months, from drivers Bernie Schmitte, Wayne Leis,
Stan Erb and Bruce Drury, we have been able to cover the
loads. Thanks guys! Our revenue, for the first nine months of
our fiscal year, is up 16.3% from last year, obviously due in
part to the extra revenue this straight truck work is
generating.
There has been some interesting van work for our drivers
this summer. On Sunday, September 12th, driver Mark
Smith took a vanload of small Hershey S’mores bars to the
Royal Military College in Kingston. Hershey had asked Erb
Expedite to pick up the product in Mississauga on Saturday
and have our driver and reefer van sit at a function in
PAGE 36
Kingston on Sunday from 09:30 until 23:00. Approximately
5,000 S’mores bars were handed out. After the weekend,
when speaking to the driver, Mark, we discovered that he
had a great day in Kingston. The function was actually a
benefit concert for sick kids with cancer, with proceeds
going to their major hospital in Kingston. Mark, along with
over 28,000 other people at the concert, got to enjoy
popular groups such as Tragically Hip throughout the day.
On Friday, September 10th, van owner operator Kevin
Schatz, picked up nine generators from Tavistock, ON. He
delivered them to six separate locations in the Miami, FL
area on Sunday, September 12th. These residents were
preparing for the onset of Hurricane Ivan. As I write this, the
date is Wednesday September 29th and our van owner
operator, Luis Cordeiro is on his way to Florida. He has two
larger generators on his van that he picked up in Tavistock
yesterday. He will deliver them to a company in Port
Everglades, FL on Thursday. This company will in turn load
the generators on a ship to set sail on Friday to the Cayman
Islands where the generators will then be delivered to
hospitals.
We should be thankful for our good fortune in this part
of the world and pray for those less fortunate - those whose
lives have been wrought with devastation recently by
catastrophic weather conditions or by acts of terrorism in
different parts of the world.
Congratulations to the Erb family on their 45th
anniversary, on behalf of everyone at Erb Expedite. It’s a
pleasure working for such a generous and family oriented
company as the Erb Group.
Erb Group Sales Report
We trust that everyone had a restful and rewarding summer.
We continue to be very busy with Erb Group Sales; the
volume has been very heavy - so much so that we have had
to be selective in determining how much additional volume
we can accommodate. This is particularly true with volume
Erb International handles from Canada to the US. Again,
our major issue is having sufficient professional drivers for
our tractors. Our recruitment personnel continue to be very
aggressive with new ideas for soliciting drivers. New
business opportunities are being delayed until January 2005.
At that time we will determine how much new business we
can handle.
We in the sales department have had a very, very busy
summer dealing with the various issues confronting our
industry. In the spring issue of the Erban Report, we shared
about the changes in our Canadian Pallet Council (CPC)
program. The transition to our program with our customers
has gone well considering the unpopular topic of pallets.
The one comment that our customers made to our Account
Managers was their recognition that change with the CPC
program had to occur. We believe we have started the
process with how shippers, receivers and other carriers think
about the entire CPC pallet program. We thank each of you
who helped make this new program a success - from our
front line drivers and sales staff to our warehouse and pallet
department personnel.
Another issue that our sales staff was involved in with
many of our customers was price negotiations. We continue
our policy of defining the activity required to handle the
business in order to determine what the freight rates should
be for specific customers.
Again, I appreciate the support all the departments of
the Erb Group of Companies provide for us in sales. The
Hamilton-based steel company, Stelco, has as one of its
slogans: “Our strength is our people.” I think this
describes the entire Erb team - our strength is our people.
The rich history of the Erb Group of Companies’ 45
years was celebrated at our Baden employee/vendor and
customer appreciation day. We were blessed with a great
day to reminisce, eat and see the antiques. The “Walk of
Time” with the calendars and pictures certainly flooded me
with fond memories. I shared some of these memories in
the spring issue of the Erban Report. We look forward to
continuing the tradition of providing quality customer
service in all we do with the great team of people we have
in the Erb Group of Companies.
May you all have a great and blessed fall and winter.
A Prayer
Grant me, O Lord, this day to see
The need this world may have for me;
To play the friend
Unto the end;
To bear my burden and to keep
My courage, though the way be steep.
Grant me, O Lord, to set aside
The petty things of selfish pride;
To toil without
Too much of doubt;
To meet what comes of good or ill
And be a gracious neighbor, still.
Grant me, O Lord, to face the rain
And not too bitterly complain;
Nor let a joy
My calm destroy;
But teach me so to live that I
Can brother with each passer-by.
Claims Department
On behalf of the Claims Department, I would like to
congratulate the Erb Group on achieving their 45th
anniversary. This is quite an accomplishment. Keep up the
good work!!
When we were asked to submit something for the fall
issue of the Erban Report, Terry Trachsel graciously gave the
task to me. Where do I start? What do I say? The Claims
department can be viewed in such a negative light but,
contrary to popular belief, we have quite a bit of fun here.
Instead of getting into too many details about the “fun” we
have (like Terry having Gremlins in his office), I thought I’d
give everyone a little insight into the people who work in
this department.
Terry Trachsel (Claims Manager) started with Erb in 1973
as a dockworker in Baden. In 1975, he moved to Thunder
Bay and drove truck from that terminal with two designated
runs, Atikokan on Tuesdays and Terrace Bay on Thursdays.
In 1976, he decided to leave and pursue an opportunity in
the construction industry. Terry returned to Erb in 1983, and
worked with Warren Wintermeyer. Between the two of them,
they developed the OS&D department. Warren worked days
and Terry worked the night shift. He checked in bills and
prepared the Re-ship and Return bills. In 1990, Terry left
again, this time to pursue his interest in Real Estate and a
business venture in a butcher shop. In 1998, Terry heard
through the grapevine that Warren had suffered a heart
attack. He contacted Floyd Gerber to inquire about his long
time friend. Warren was doing okay but would not return for
some time. One thing lead to another and, within days,
Terry was back at Erb covering the Claims department.
PAGE 38
When Warren returned to Erb after his recovery, Terry held
the Claims co-ordinator position. In early 2002, Warren
retired and Terry assumed the Claims Manager position
which he still holds today. The next call he plans on
answering is for retirement in a few years. Let’s hope he
doesn’t forget to put his phone on Call Forward if he steps
away from his desk. I wouldn’t want to take the call for
him!!
Diane Roes (Claims Research Assistant) came to Erb in
April 1995. She worked in Document Control going
through the bills from the various terminals (US &
Canadian). In Sept. ‘01 she became the P.O.D (Proof of
Delivery) coordinator and assisted with obtaining missing
bills. In Dec. ‘03, Diane applied for, and accepted, the
position of Claims Research Assistant. Her experience in the
P.O.D department has been a definite bonus in this position.
Last, but not least, there is me, Marcia Hanenburg
(Claims Coordinator). I was hired at the Erb Group of
Companies in Sept ‘01 to cover a position that had opened
in Document Control. I went through the bills from the
various terminals (US & Canadian). In Jan ‘02, I was
approached and asked to apply for the Claims Coordinator
position that was becoming available in February. And as the
saying goes “the rest is history”!! Each day brings on new
challenges and learning experiences. We look forward to
them and to working closely with Erb employees and our
customers.
Scott Steckly 2004 Year in Review
Scott Steckly’s 2004 CASCAR Super Series was one of his most successful campaigns to
date. He finished with 1 podium, 8 top- six finishes, and 9 top- ten finishes overall. To top it
off he finished seventh in the Championship Standings, a mere 84 points out of fourth
place. Here is a brief summary of the 12 race CASCAR schedule that was run by Steckly.
May 29 Steckly started the season on a very high note finishing third in the Mopar 250 at
Delaware Speedway. Scott started the race in eighth and managed to work his way up
through the field all night long. It would be Steckly’s highest finish for the season.
June 6 Disaster struck for Steckly and the #22 team at Cayuga 2000 Speedway as Scott was
spun by #02 Kerry Micks in turn #3. During the spin Steckly’s clutch had given out and he
was forced to put his car in the garage area, so he didn’t risk further damage to the car.
Steckly finished in 26th position, 19 laps off the pace.
June 13 The #22 team got back on a roll at Peterborough Speedway as Scott bumped and
grinded his way from his 11th place qualifying position into 4th place. Steckly was battling
with Kerry Micks in the final laps for the final position on the podium.
June 20 Mosport International Raceway was the scene for the first road course race and for
the first time all season Scott qualified in the top - five. With very little passing going on
Steckly would remain in fourth place for the whole day. After 4 races Scott was in 6th place
in the Championship Standing with 550 points.
July 4 The second race of the season at Cayuga 2000 Speedway produced no better results.
Steckly would start the race in ninth, however on lap 39 he was involved in a collision with
#11 Ron Van Es and for the next 36 laps he was driving around with a severely damaged
race car. Scott finished the race in 28th position, 125 laps down.
July 10 The Toronto Molson Indy was the scene of round six of twelve on the schedule.
Again there was little passing by Steckly on the temporary street circuit. Scott qualified in
fifth and came home in the sixth position.
July 24 The Erb Group Race Team headed out west for the next two races. The first was
being held in Vancouver, another temporary street course. In a similar race to the Toronto
Molson Indy Steckly started in sixth and finished in fifth.
July 31 Steckly brought home a second fifth place finish in a row at Calgary’s Race City
Motorsports Park. After starting ninth Steckly was the race leader by lap 200 of 300.
However he was unable to hang on and fell down to the fifth place. It was the only time
that Scott would lead a race during the season.
August 21 The Erb Group Race Team came back east for the final four races of the season.
Mosport Speedway was next on the schedule. Steckly qualified fourth but he had a few set
backs. Scott rear ended #39 Dave Whitlock and later he was spun by the rookie #11 Ron
Van Es. Steckly recovered to finish in eighth place.
August 28 Next up was the 1/3 mile oval of Peterborough Speedway. Steckly started in
ninth, and following a collision involving most of the leaders Scott managed to pass 5 cars
and move into the fourth position. He could not keep the top- five as Scott fell down to
sixth in the last few laps of the race.
September 5 Scott had his best qualifying position on
Labour Day Weekend at Delaware Speedway as Steckly
started third in the next to last race in the CASCAR season.
Steckly was forced to work his through the field all day long
following an early pit stop which dropped Steckly down to
14th place. He made it back up to third but was forced to
settle for a sixth place finish.
September 19 Steckly was looking to finish the season on a
high note but that was not going to happen this time. The
day got off to a bad start when Scott qualified in 13th, he
made up many positions by a having an extremely quick pit
stop moving into fifth. Midway throughthe race D.J.
Kennington was being passed by Scott but Kennington
turned down on the #22 car which spun out Kennington.
Cause to Celebrate!
Our hats are off to
Vernon, Viola and
family for all the
sacrifices and dreams
they have had for 45
years in building their
company with honesty
and integrity. They
have watched the
company grow from a
lone gravel truck to
what it is today! It is a
credit to their honest,
hard work.
We all have
celebrations that are
part of our life,
birthdays - that we lie
about or wish people
would forget - anniversaries, moves, or other events, and
especially weddings, which come our way.
Lois and I are celebrating a disappearing fiftieth year
milestone in marriage. We celebrated our fiftieth wedding
anniversary this June. It has taken a lot of hard work to
reach this milestone. We took the time to look back and
wondered to ourselves how we made it through those years.
The family of four boys is a contract that takes a lot of care
and concentration. Today, we still have three boys living with
ten wonderful grandchildren - one of those grandchildren
has already gone, too. On this journey, we have had the
wonderful joy of births, birthdays and weddings. How did
we interact with our boys, how can we share with others the
secret of how we did it? For each couple, it takes their own
ingredients to get the job done. For us, there are several
important values that we need to share.
The three core values that every marriage should be built
upon are Faith, Hope, and Love. The first is FAITH. There
needs to be faith in each other. We have committed
ourselves to each other for better or for worse. This was the
commitment we made the first day of our marriage. Also, we
needed faith in others as we built our circle of friends. This
PAGE 42
became the foundation of our social life. And, the
cornerstone of all relationships is a strong faith in God. He is
our creator and sustainer in every situation.
The second value is the HOPE we have for the children
we bare and for each other. Hope for our life situations, our
homes, friends and work.
The third is LOVE for each other. We had to work at that
love. We are human and seek to go the easy road. When
tough decisions needed to be made, that love had to be
strong enough to hold the foundation together. We feel that
we were never out of love at the same time. The bottom line
is to love each other, and love God who first gives us the
ability to love through every situation in life. This is familiar
because they are biblical principles from Paul in 1
Corinthians 13b.
Trust steadily in God, Hope unswervingly, Love
extravagantly. And the best of the three is LOVE.
During the years we have known the Erb family, this is
the kind of commitment that they have modeled in their
family life and passed on to staff and friends alike.
May God bless the Erb family, as they lead this wonderful
company in the next 45 years!
They each received a 10 inch Crystal Erb Tractor
