5 REASONS YOU SHOULD PAIR
NATIVE FLOWERING PERENNIALS
WITH GRASSES
Pairing native flowering perennials with grasses is a fantastic strategy for
creating a vibrant, resilient landscape. Here’s why:
Visual Appeal
Grasses add texture, movement, and a dynamic contrast to the colorful blooms of
flowering perennials. This combination can enhance the aesthetic appeal of your
landscape, providing a play of heights, shapes, and colors that change with the
seasons.
PAIRING PERENNIALS
Environmental Benefits
Native perennials and grasses adapt well to their local environments, which
means they generally require less water and fewer chemical treatments.
This not only makes your landscape more sustainable but also aids in conserving
local water resources and minimizing chemical runoff.
Wildlife Support
Native perennials provide nectar, pollen, seeds, and habitat for wildlife, including
pollinators and birds. Grasses can also serve as shelter, nesting sites, and a food
source for various creatures. Together, they create a biodiverse ecosystem that
supports and attracts a wide range of wildlife.
Soil Health
The deep root systems of grasses helps increase below ground biomass and
improves soil structure and drainage, which benefits the perennials planted alongside
them. This can lead to healthier plants and reduced erosion in the landscape.
Year-around Interest
While perennials may bloom for a specific season, grasses offer visual interest
year-round. From their foliage in spring and summer to their striking seedheads
and color in fall and winter, grasses ensure that your landscape remains attractive
outside of the flowering season of perennials.
The Importance of Pollinators and Perennials
There's a lot of buzz around pollinators these days. This increased popularity can be
attributed to the growing awareness of their critical role in biodiversity and agriculture,
along with concerns about their declining populations.
Native flowering perennials play a crucial role in supporting pollinators. These plants
have co-evolved with local insects, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds
to provide the necessary resources such as nectar and pollen that are essential for
their survival. In return, pollinators facilitate the reproductive process of these plants
through pollination, ensuring genetic diversity and the propagation of various plant
species. This symbiotic relationship enhances the productivity of agricultural systems
and maintains the balance of natural habitats.
By cultivating native perennials, we can contribute to the preservation of pollinator
populations, which are currently threatened by habitat loss, pesticides, and climate
change. This not only supports biodiversity but also helps sustain our food systems
and natural landscapes.
All of our Perennial Solutions selections are benficial to pollinators in one capacity or
another, see our specifics in our plant descriptions on pages 14-31.
LIATRIS SPICATA
MONARDA FISTULOSA
Liatris spicata
BLAZING STAR, MARSH BLAZING STAR
Liatris spicata is a soft-textured, clump-forming, upright perennial that's native to the eastern U.S.
but has naturalized towards the northeast. Reaching up to 4’, the long, narrow, grass-like green
foliage contrasts well with the spikes of showy, tubular, rose-purple-colored blooms that flower from
the top down in the summer. It prefers full sun to part shade with average to moist, well-drained
soils and tends to performs better than other blazing stars in wet soil. Cold hardy to zone 3, this
low-maintenance perennial tolerates summer heat and humidity in the southeast well. It spreads to
create new colonies by seed and corms with shallow fibrous roots.
Blazing Star is beautiful in mass plantings or perennial borders and increases biodiversity by
attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. It hosts and provides food for the Liatris Flower
and Liatris Borer Moths, and its seeds provide food for goldfinches, Black-capped chickadees,
and other songbirds. Its foliage and seedheads provide color and texture in winter for multi-season
interest. Aesthetically pleasing and functional, it is used in green infrastructure measures ranging
from bioretention cells and rain gardens to vegetated swales and meadow and prairie plantings.
Monarda fistulosa
WILD BERGAMOT, BEEBALM
From fragrance and biodiversity to stormwater management, there are many reasons to love
Monarda fistulosa. Found throughout most of southern Canada and the U.S., and down to eastern
Mexico, this fast grower sports gray-green, smooth foliage and 2-4" pink and purple tubular flowers
that resemble ragged pompoms. Cold hardy to zone 3, this member of the mint family can reach
4' and prefers full sun-part shade and dry to moist soil with good drainage. Moderately drought
tolerant, heat, clay, black walnut tolerant, and deer resistant, this tough perennial spreads by
rhizomes and seed.
Pollinator-friendly, Monarda fistulosa attracts many native and specialized bees, butterflies, and
hummingbirds who drink nectar from the blooms. Mint tea and perfume can be made from the
aromatic leaves, and there is a long history of the plant's use in herbal medicine. Its function and
aesthetic value make it an excellent choice for green infrastructure measures, including bioretention
cells, rain gardens, bioswales, vegetated swales, as well as meadow and prairie plantings. It
is also an excellent choice for color and contrast in herb gardens, mixed perennial borders, and
cottage gardens.
PONTEDERIA CORDATA
SAURURUS CERNUUS
Pontederia cordata
PICKERELWEED
Originating in eastern North America down to the Caribbean, Pontederia cordata is a unique fastgrowing,
native perennial that reaches 4' tall in serene riparian areas and aquatic margins. It has
lance-shaped, green, glossy leaves and hyacinth-like blue, purple, and lavender tubular spike
flowers. Cold hardy to zone 3, it thrives in full sun and moist to aquatic conditions. It's a versatile
plant that can tolerate flooding up to 20". It prefers part sun and tolerates poor soil and heat.
Butterflies, bumblebees, and specialized bees are attracted to the flowers, waterfowl eat the
seeds, and dragonflies and damselflies use it to perch and lay their eggs. Beneficial insects like
dragonflies and damselflies feed on mosquitos, midges, and flies, helping to provide nuisance
insect control. It's great for green infrastructure measures like bioretention cells and rain gardens.
Pickerelweed can also be consumed by humans, the seeds can be eaten raw, dried, roasted, or
ground into flour and young leaves can be added to salads. Pontederia cordata is certainly beneficial
to insects, wildlife, and humans alike.
Saururus cernuus
LIZARD'S TAIL, SWAMP LILY
Saururus cernuus is an upright, clump-forming, native that grows between 2-4’ and thrives in moist
to wet conditions. The genus name originates from the Greek words ‘sauros’, meaning lizard, and
‘oura’, meaning tail, which describes the dense spicate inflorescence of the finger-like fragrant
flowers and fruit. Broad, green, lance-shaped foliage tapers to a charming heart-shaped base. It's
cold hardy to zone 3, prefers full sun to part shade in moist to wet soil, and can withstand saturated
soils of up to 4” of inundation. Lizard’s tail is low maintenance and a fast grower that spreads via
rhizomes. It has the potential to outcompete other species, so place accordingly.
It's an important food source for many wetland animals and beneficial insects. It provides cover
for waterfowl and attracts birds and pollinator. Used in bioretention cells, rain gardens, wetland
restoration, Lizard’s tail provides stormwater management solutions.
SOLIDAGO RUGOSA
SYMPHYOTRICHUM OBLONGIFOLIUM
Solidago rugosa
GOLDENROD, WRINKLELEAF GOLDENROD
Found in sunny, moist sites, Solidago rugosa is a low-maintenance, compact perennial found in
the Eastern U.S. and Canada. Abundant medium-width, lance-shaped, green wrinkled leaves grow
from the base. Hairy stems with spikes of radiating gold and yellow tubular flowers arch above the
foliage in late summer and early fall, providing stunning late-season color. Cold hardy to zone 4, it
prefers full to part sun in moist to wet, well-drained soils. A fast and vigorous grower, it can spread
aggressively by rhizomes and reseed in optimal conditions; removing seedheads in the fall can help
reduce seed dispersal.
Goldenrod provides food and shelter for migrating monarch butterflies, native and specialized
bees, and numerous moth species, including the Wavy-lined Emerald. Indigo buntings, American
goldfinch, swamp sparrows, among other songbirds all feed on the seeds. This native perennial has
been used in herbal medicine to treat dizziness, weakness, and sunstroke and to support liver and
digestive health. It controls erosion and is useful in bioretention cells, rain gardens, bioswales and
vegetated swales, and meadow and prairie plantings.
3-6’, 6’ with blooms, full sun-part sun, average-wet, flowers late summer-early fall, Zones 4-8, Origin: North
America
Symphyotrichum oblongifolium
AROMATIC ASTER, WILD BLUE ASTER
Symphyotrichum oblongifolium is a dense, mound-forming native known for small, showy, purple
flowers and a long blooming season. This low-maintenance and fragrant wildflower is found
throughout the U.S. to Mexico. Beauty combined with toughness, it's cold hardy to zone 3, drought
tolerant, and deer resistant. It prefers full sun and dry to average soil and grows in poor, rocky soils,
sandy slopes, and disturbed sites. A fast grower that spreads by stolons and seed, regular thinning
will help control its spread.
Selected as the 2000 NC Wildflower of the Year by the NC Botanical Garden, the Aromatic aster
is pollinator-friendly and attracts numerous bee species, butterflies, and skippers. Silvery Checkerspot
and many other butterfly moth species feed on the foliage and other parts of the plant,
while upland gamebirds feed on its seeds. It’s an excellent groundcover and a smart choice for
green infrastructure measures including green roofs, meadow and prairie plantings, and provides
erosion control.
Verbena hastata
BLUE VERVAIN
Verbena hastata is a stout, upright, clumping perennial that grows to 4’. It's a visually striking ecological
superstar with lance-like green foliage, and 6” blue-purple, tubular flowers that resemble a
candelabra. Native to North America and widely distributed, it is cold hardy to zone 3 and found in
moist to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Low maintenance and a slow spreader by rhizome and
seed, it’s generally avoided by most mammals due to the bitter taste of the foliage.
Useful in rain gardens, bioswales, vegetated swales, meadow and prairie plantings, Blue Vervain
effortlessly blends aesthetics, visual structure, and ecological function. Blue Vervain is a food
source and larval host for several butterfly and moth species, including hummingbird moths.
Numerous bees are drawn to its flowers, and birds, such as sparrows, cardinals, and juncos, enjoy
eating the seeds. It a perfect fit in wildlife gardens, wildflower meadows, and restoration projects.
Vernonia noveboracensis
IRONWEED, TALL IRONWEED
With a name attributed to its tough stems and rusty color, Vernonia noveboracensis is a tall, rugged,
good-looking native. Chosen as the NC Botanical Garden 2004 Wildflower of the Year, this
perennial is found throughout the mid-atlantic and southeastern U.S.. It's cold hardy to zone 5 and
capable of growing to 7’. It performs best in full sun in average to wet soils. Medium width, green
lance-like foliage accentuates the showy 3-4” wide, fluffy, deep purple flower clusters. It is low
maintenance, easy to grow, and deer resistant and tolerant of clay, neutral and acidic soils.
Ironweed attracts a diverse array of pollinators, including butterflies, bees, and other beneficial
insects, while also providing seeds that are a valuable food source for various songbirds. It's a
smart choice for bioretention cells, rain gardens, bioswales, vegetated swales, and meadow and
prairie plantings. This elegant perennial provides solutions for sunny or wet sites, boosts biodiversity,
and adds ecological and visual value to the landscape.
