Roots and Wings: How Escape for an Artist can
A conversation with
ALYMAMAH
RASHED
Alymamah Rashed an artist who gracefully navigates the interplay between
identity, nature, and cultural heritage, creating profound visual
narratives shares her exploration of themes such as the intrinsic and
extrinsic escape, not as a departure but as an entryway to new perspectives
and experiences, all of which connect back to her essence.
Her works, deeply influenced by personal history and regional folklore,
invite viewers to embark on their journeys of discovery. Through global
exhibitions and cross-cultural dialogues, Rashed’s art fosters a universal
sense of connection and understanding, emphasizing the importance
of mentorship and cultural exchange in nurturing creativity. This
interview delves into her creative process, the impact of her work on
diverse audiences, and her vision for fostering artistic growth in a richly
interconnected work.
8 July 2024
Your art often explores themes of identity and the natural environment,
blending perspectives from the East and West. How
do you find ‘escape’ in your creative process, and how does
this influence the narratives you build within your work?
The word “escape” to me refers to an entryway rather than an
exit. I enter into new visions, senses, and experiences that still
connect me to my seed. I believe all that I see, feel, and sense
roots me back to my seed. However, the way changes and fluctuates,
which results in a newfound understanding of my seed. My
practice is heavily influenced by my personal life, the intrinsic, and
how it connects to the environment around me, the extrinsic. I also
believe that the connection from intrinsic to extrinsic is orchestrated
from both ends. In past works, I would work from an internal
feeling and the perception of it that lays within would attract an
existing environment or would build an environment composed
of personal symbols such as references from tile shards found in
the heart of Kuwait City or botanicals found in Failaka Island that
bloom in the spring time only. Currently, a found natural environment
would directly dictate the narrative. I just went on a hiking
trip near Antalya in Turkey and I saw a mountain that holds a bird
sanctuary. As soon as I saw it, I just imagined myself laying on
top of them and my body molding into them. This is because I felt
an opening within my chest that I hadn’t experienced before and
it was a purge of a memory that I healed recently. Escape is a
constant return to the self.
You’ve participated in numerous exhibitions across the globe,
from New York to Dubai. Can you share a memorable experience
from one of these exhibitions where your work provided
an ‘escape’ for the audience, and how that impacted you as
an artist?
In my second solo exhibition with Tabari Artspace, I was very
happy to know how a lot of visitors felt a sense of relief when looking
at the work. My intent is always to provide an open window of
entry through the eye for the viewer regardless of whether they
would want to learn about my story or not. That’s the purpose of
art: to gift the freedom that I gifted myself while creating the work
to the viewer in whatever way they choose to interact, think, or
access the work. I also knew that a lot of people were somewhat
pleasantly surprised to see me wear the hijab even though that
is not a relevant association for me conceptually and visually towards
my practice. Some found that to be an access point as well
to the work. I also think that it might have been an open window
for a lot of people, especially women, to see that you’re simply
human and you get to choose what you want to explore and share
about your entirety without judgment and fear; to share yourself
freely. I had a lot of women email me after the shows, especially
hijabi women, opening up about their practices and experiences
within their every day and I am forever grateful for that. At the end
of the day, I see myself as a painter who paints stories about herself
in relation to where she finds herself within her surroundings
and I’m happy to see how different individuals would connect to
the work regardless of their beliefs, race, and gender.
FEATURED ARTIST
For many artists, nature serves as a sanctuary and a source
of inspiration. How do your local botanical finds and regional
folklore play into the concept of escape in your art, and what
advice would you give to artists seeking to incorporate their
environment into their work?
My botanical finds or folklore references derive from the area of
interest I would be currently compelled by. For example, my exhibition
on Failaka Island at Fikar Failaka, “Earth Can Be As Dead
As It Can Be Alive”, was built on a year-long residency, constantly
researching about the island, visiting the archeological sites,
working with archaeologists, meeting with residents of the island,
and researching about its history. However, what was even more
valuable to me is how do I get to connect with all of this found
history. It is absolutely crucial and essential for myself to create
my own access point as well so I built my own narratives, folklore,
and stories that are inspired by the found beliefs and history
of the island. For example, I created a piece composed of hundreds
of watercolor panels that explore Al Khidr, the messenger
of Moses who was believed to have visited the island and the
Failakawis built a shrine for him that was demolished throughout
the island’s history. My responses to the island were also inspired
by seashells, pebbles, tiles, and Botanics that I have collected
from all over the island. They were embedded individually within
all the works in the show and each work is a personal response
to the object and myself. I encourage artists who are interested in
exploring the natural environment to envision themselves being
the environment itself by embedding themselves into the makeup
of it through both its silent and prominent symbols. A pebble can
sing too.
As someone who has received significant recognition and
scholarships, what role does mentorship play in your artistic
journey? How can emerging artists and galleries cultivate
meaningful mentorship relationships to foster creativity and
professional growth?
It is absolutely essential for any artist, no matter how much experience
you have, to be inspired by others. It’s crucial to have
a few individuals whom you can share your barest thought with
and to also have intricate conversations with that would unfold the
work and bare its skeletal system as well as its soul. I personally
have friends, former colleagues, and professors from school that
I connect with when I need to. However, I also find that being a
mentor yourself mentors you too. I absolutely enjoyed teaching
and mentoring high school students, college students, and kids
because I see it more as a flow of exchanges. Nothing is too small
or big. You both allow yourselves to exist in an open space of
freedom and perhaps inspire one another to explore what lies beyond
our built notions. In other words, I believe every artist should
birth, exist, and provide an open field of perception, dialogue, and
thoughts and you cannot provide that unless you practice it with
yourself. All freedom lies within and you must be aware in order to
live it and then birth it to the world abundantly.
10 July 2024 www.magzoid.com

Your involvement in various international art events highlights
the importance of cultural exchange. How do you think participating
in such events contributes to an artist’s ability to
‘escape’ traditional boundaries, and what benefits do you see
for galleries in promoting artists with diverse cultural backgrounds?
I think by simply showing up and speaking about your work
in relation to yourself, other incredible artists, and simply what
moves you will inspire individuals to speak their own stories
too. Galleries, fairs, residencies, and talks do provide a space
for many emerging, mid-career, and established artists to speak
their stories and there are many galleries who allow for freedom
of expression, collaborations, and interactivity with the real world.
These spaces extend your story and the stories of others, however,
it is also important to realize that your voice lies within you
and you get to choose who you want to work with and who you
trust to place your voice within their platform. I think it’s absolutely
necessary to remind artists to simply focus on the work and to be
concerned with the work first and always. You will align with the
right individuals, galleries, and institutions, but most importantly,
you must align with yourself first and truly show up and believe
in your work. This will always be the core of your practice: being
authentically who you are while challenging yourself through yourself
and being immersed within the act of making. I am tremendously
grateful to be working with Tabari Airspace and Hunna Art
because they both align with who I am as a person, as a painter,
and a storyteller. I am grounded and they ground me even more.
10 FASCINATING ART FACTS
ABOUT THE THEME OF ESCAPE
ART FACTS
Art has long been a powerful medium
through which artists express their
deepest emotions, thoughts, and
desires. One recurring theme in art
is that of escape—whether from reality, societal
norms, or internal struggles. Here are
ten fascinating facts about how the theme of
escape is depicted and interpreted in the art
world.
1. Surrealism: A Gateway to the Unconscious
Surrealism, a movement that began in the
early 20th century, is renowned for its dreamlike
visuals and bizarre, fantastical scenes.
Artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte
used this style to escape the constraints
of rational thought, delving into the unconscious
mind to explore themes of desire,
fear, and freedom.
2. The Harlem Renaissance: Escaping Racial
Oppression
During the Harlem Renaissance of the
1920s and 1930s, African American artists,
writers, and musicians sought to escape
the pervasive racial oppression of the era.
Through their work, they expressed pride in
their heritage and envisioned a society free
from racism. Notable figures include painter
Aaron Douglas and writer Langston Hughes.
3. Vincent van Gogh: Escaping Through
Color
Vincent van Gogh’s vibrant, emotive use
of color can be seen as a means of escape
from his turbulent inner life and mental health
struggles. His swirling, expressive brushstrokes
in works like “Starry Night” convey a
desire to transcend reality and find solace in
the beauty of the natural world.
4. Abstract Expressionism: Escaping Traditional
Forms
In the mid-20th century, Abstract Expressionists
like Jackson Pollock and Mark
Rothko sought to break free from traditional
artistic forms and techniques. Their focus
on spontaneity and emotion allowed them to
explore new forms of expression, providing
a sense of freedom and escape from conventional
artistic boundaries.
5. Frida Kahlo: Escaping Pain Through
Symbolism
Mexican artist Frida Kahlo used her art
to escape from the physical and emotional
pain she endured throughout her life. Her
self-portraits often incorporate symbolic elements
that reflect her suffering, resilience,
and desire for freedom from her afflictions.
6. Street Art: Escaping the Gallery
Street art, exemplified by artists like
Banksy, uses public spaces as a canvas to
ART AS SANCTUARY:
THE LIBERATING
POWER OF CREATIVE
ESCAPE
In a world increasingly bound by the rigors of daily life, the concept of escape has
never been more alluring. From the demands of work to the omnipresent digital
noise, the quest for respite is a universal human endeavor. This search for sanctuary
finds one of its most profound and enduring outlets in art. Art, in its myriad
forms, offers an unparalleled avenue for escape—a sanctuary where the mind can
wander, the soul can breathe, and the spirit can rejuvenate.
Art communicates in a language
that transcends words. A brushstroke,
a melody, a sculpted form,
or a choreographed movement can
convey emotions and ideas that defy verbal
articulation. This silent dialogue between the
artwork and the observer creates a private
space for reflection and introspection. When
we engage with art, we step outside the
confines of our immediate reality and enter
a world crafted by imagination and emotion.
This journey, whether it is through the surreal
landscapes of Salvador Dalí, the emotive
depth of Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits, or
the abstract forms of Wassily Kandinsky, is
a testament to the liberating power of artistic
expression.
Historical Perspectives on Art as Escape
Historically, art has served as a crucial
escape from societal and political turmoil.
During the Renaissance, artists like Leonardo
da Vinci and Michelangelo created works
that transcended the oppressive dogmas of
their time, offering glimpses into a world of
beauty and human potential. Similarly, the
Dada movement emerged as a response
to the horrors of World War I, providing an
anarchic escape from the senselessness of
conflict through absurdity and irrationality.
In the 20th century, Harlem Renaissance
artists like Langston Hughes and Zora Neale
Hurston used literature and visual art to
create an escape from the pervasive racial
injustices of their era. Their work did not just
offer a retreat but also a vision of what could
be—a vital aspect of art’s escapist power.
The Contemporary Landscape
Today, the digital age has both expanded
and complicated the notion of escape.
Virtual reality, digital art, and online galleries
offer new dimensions for artistic exploration.
However, this digital proliferation can
also feel overwhelming. In this context, art’s
role as a haven becomes even more crucial.
Street art and public installations, like those
by Banksy or JR, transform mundane urban
spaces into sites of reflection and escape,
challenging our perceptions of reality and
offering a momentary respite from the grind
of city life.
Moreover, art therapy has emerged as a
significant field, highlighting the therapeutic
potential of art as a form of escape. By engaging
in the creative process, individuals
can express emotions and experiences that
are otherwise difficult to articulate, finding
solace and healing in the act of creation.
Art as a Shared Experience of Liberation
While the escape provided by art is
deeply personal, it also fosters a sense of
community. Museums, galleries, and performances
bring people together, creating
shared experiences that transcend individual
escapism. These communal encounters
with art remind us that we are not alone in
our yearning for something beyond the ordinary.
The collective sigh of an audience
at the end of a moving performance, the
shared gaze at a stunning piece of art, and
the communal discussion that follows all emphasize
art’s unique ability to unite us in our
search for liberation.
Art’s capacity to provide escape is boundless.
It offers us the freedom to explore new
worlds, confront our deepest emotions, and
envision better futures. In a time where the
pressures of life seem incessant, art remains
a steadfast refuge—a reminder that even
within the confines of our everyday existence,
there lies an infinite horizon of possibility
and peace. Whether through the quiet
contemplation of a painting or the shared joy
of a live performance, art invites us to step
beyond our reality and into a space where
imagination reigns supreme.
In this relentless pursuit of freedom, art
stands as both guide and destination, forever
beckoning us to lose ourselves in its vast,
liberating embrace.
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL JOKE DAY:
THE ART OF HUMOR IN CREATIVITY
SPECIAL DAY
Humor, often seen as the lighter side
of life, plays a significant role in the
world of art. From the exaggerated
caricatures of the 18th century to
the modern-day satirical cartoons, humor
has been a powerful tool for artists to convey
messages, critique society, and bring joy.
As we celebrate International Joke Day, let’s
delve into how humor has been masterfully
woven into the tapestry of art.
Historical Perspectives: The Evolution of
Humor in Art
The roots of humor in art can be traced
back to ancient times. Greek pottery often
depicted scenes of everyday life with a humorous
twist, while medieval manuscripts
featured playful marginalia—small illustrations
that often included jesters, animals,
and humorous scenes. These early forms of
comedic art served to entertain and provide
relief from the rigors of daily life.
In the Renaissance, humor took on a more
sophisticated form. Artists like Pieter Bruegel
the Elder and Hieronymus Bosch used
satire to depict the folly of humanity. Their
works, filled with intricate details and hidden
jokes, invited viewers to look closer and find
humor in the chaos of human existence.
Caricature and Satire: The Power of Exaggeration
The 18th and 19th centuries saw the rise
of caricature and satire, with artists like
James Gillray and Honoré Daumier leading
the way. Caricatures exaggerated features
and mannerisms, turning public figures
and societal norms into subjects of ridicule.
These works were not just for amusement;
they were sharp critiques of politics and culture,
using humor as a lens to highlight truth.
Daumier’s lithographs, for example, were
known for their biting commentary on French
society. His ability to blend humor with poignant
social critique made his work influential
in both artistic and political spheres. The
exaggerated, often grotesque depictions of
notable figures served as powerful statements,
proving that humor could be both
entertaining and deeply thought-provoking.
Modern Expressions: Humor in Contemporary
Art
In contemporary art, humor continues to
thrive, evolving with the times. Artists like
Maurizio Cattelan and Banksy use humor to
challenge perceptions and provoke thought.
Cattelan’s works, such as the infamous banana
duct-taped to a wall, titled “Comedian,”
play with absurdity and the commodification
of art, prompting viewers to question the nature
of artistic value.
Banksy, with his street art, blends humor
and social commentary seamlessly. His
stenciled pieces often incorporate witty text
and visual puns, addressing issues like consumerism,
war, and environmental degradation.
By infusing humor into serious subjects,
Banksy’s art becomes accessible and engaging,
encouraging public discourse.
The Healing Power of Laughter
Beyond its critical edge, humor in art also
serves a therapeutic purpose. Laughter, as
they say, is the best medicine, and art that
evokes joy and amusement can have a profound
impact on mental well-being. In times
of crisis or stress, humorous art offers a reprieve,
a moment of lightness that can uplift
spirits and foster a sense of community.
International Joke Day reminds us that
humor is a universal language, transcending
cultural and linguistic barriers. It connects
us, allowing us to see the world through a
playful lens. In the realm of art, humor not
only entertains but also challenges, heals,
and inspires.
As we celebrate this day, let’s take a moment
to appreciate the artists who masterfully
blend humor with creativity. Whether
through a clever caricature, a satirical painting,
or a whimsical sculpture, their work reminds
us of the joy and insight that humor
brings to our lives.
So, as you flip through the pages of this
magazine, may you find a smile spreading
across your face, a chuckle escaping your
lips, and a newfound appreciation for the art
of the joke. Happy International Joke Day!
ART AS A FORM OF ESCAPE:
A JOURNEY BEYOND THE MUNDANE
In a world where the daily grind often feels overwhelming, art offers a unique sanctuary—a
portal to realms where imagination reigns supreme. Whether it’s through painting, music,
literature, or any other creative endeavor, art provides an invaluable form of escape. It allows
us to transcend the mundane, offering solace, inspiration, and a deeper connection to the
human experience. In this Escape Edition of our magazine, we delve into the myriad ways art
serves as a refuge from reality, exploring its power to transport, heal, and transform.
The Transportive Power of Art
Art’s most immediate and recognizable
function as an escape lies in
its ability to transport us to different
worlds. A well-crafted painting can sweep us
away to distant landscapes, ancient civilizations,
or fantastical realms born of the artist’s
imagination. Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry
Night,” for example, invites viewers to lose
themselves in the swirling night sky, evoking
a sense of wonder and serenity that transcends
the confines of everyday life.
Literature, too, offers this transportive escape.
Through the pages of a book, readers
can embark on adventures in far-off lands,
experience the lives of characters from different
eras, and explore ideas that challenge
and expand their own worldviews. J.K. Rowling’s
“Harry Potter” series has captivated
millions, allowing readers to escape into a
magical world where the boundaries of the
possible are delightfully blurred.
Art as a Means of Healing
Beyond its transportive qualities, art also
serves as a profound tool for healing. In
times of personal turmoil or societal upheaval,
engaging with art can provide comfort
and a means of processing complex emotions.
The act of creating art, in particular,
offers a therapeutic escape, allowing individuals
to express themselves in ways that
words often cannot capture.
Art therapy has gained recognition as
a valuable form of psychological support,
helping people to cope with trauma, stress,
and mental illness. Creating art in a safe and
supportive environment enables individuals
to confront and work through their inner
conflicts, fostering resilience and promoting
emotional well-being.
Transformative Escapes
Art does more than provide temporary relief;
it can lead to lasting transformation. Engaging
deeply with art can inspire personal
growth, shifting perspectives and fostering
a greater understanding of oneself and the
world. It can challenge preconceptions, provoke
critical thought, and ignite a passion for
change.
Consider the impact of socially conscious
art movements. Works like Picasso’s “Guernica”
or Banksy’s provocative street art highlight
social injustices and inspire collective
action. These pieces do not just offer an escape
from reality—they encourage viewers
to return to it with a renewed sense of purpose
and a drive to effect positive change.
The Personal Escape
Each individual’s experience of art as an
escape is deeply personal. For some, it may
be the quiet contemplation of a serene landscape
painting, while for others, it could be
the electrifying energy of a live concert. The
beauty of art lies in its diversity and its ability
to cater to a vast array of tastes and emotional
needs.
SEEKING REFUGE:
HOW ARTISTS ARE FLEEING TO
CARA TO PROTECT THEIR WORK
FROM AI EXPLOITATION
In recent months, a troubling trend has emerged at the intersection of technology and the
creative arts. Social media giant Meta has begun using Instagram posts to train its generative
AI tools without the explicit consent of the artists who created the content. This development
has forced many artists to seek refuge on alternative platforms like Cara, a lesser-known
portfolio app that promises to protect their work from unauthorized AI scraping.
32 July 2024
www.magzoid.com

EDITORIAL
Meta’s actions highlight a significant
issue in the digital age: the exploitation
of creative works for the
advancement of AI technologies
without proper consent or compensation. For
artists, Instagram was once a vibrant space
for showcasing their work and connecting
with audiences. Now, it has become a battleground
where their creations are at risk of
being co-opted by algorithms designed to
mimic and reproduce their unique styles.
The backlash from the artist community
has been swift and decisive. Between May
31 and June 2, Cara’s user base surged from
less than 100,000 to over 300,000 profiles,
demonstrating a clear demand for platforms
that prioritize artist rights and integrity. This
exodus underscores the deep sense of betrayal
felt by artists who have seen their work
used as mere fodder for AI training without
their permission.
Cara differentiates itself by implementing
several key features aimed at protecting
artists. The app employs “NoAI” tags on all
posts, which are intended to deter AI scrapers,
and has introduced innovative tools like
Cara Glaze and Nightshade, developed by
the SAND Lab at the University of Chicago.
These tools modify artworks in subtle ways
that confuse AI models, making it difficult for
them to accurately reproduce the original
style. Additionally, Cara strictly moderates
AI-generated content, ensuring it is clearly
labeled and preventing it from masquerading
as human-created art.
The surge in Cara’s popularity, however,
has not been without challenges. As a platform
still in beta, Cara has faced technical
issues due to the sudden influx of users,
leading to frequent shutdowns and the need
for multiple server updates. Despite these
hurdles, the app’s commitment to safeguarding
artistic integrity has resonated deeply
within the creative community.
The current landscape reveals a broader
struggle for artists: navigating a digital world
where platforms can shift from supportive
spaces to exploitative ones. Instagram,
once a source of inspiration and connection,
now feels tainted to many artists. The sense
of betrayal is compounded by the historical
precedent set by platforms like DeviantArt,
which has also changed its algorithms to the
detriment of its user base over the years.
Artists like Brooklyn-based Hyesu Lee
express a common sentiment of exhaustion
and defeat in the face of these changes. The
constant need to adapt to new platforms and
protect one’s work from digital exploitation is
draining, detracting from the creative process
itself. Lee’s experience underscores
the difficulty of finding a trustworthy, stable
platform in a constantly shifting digital landscape.
The rise of Cara offers a glimmer of hope,
suggesting that there is a viable alternative
for artists seeking to protect their work and
maintain control over their creative output.
However, the long-term success of Cara will
depend on its ability to sustain its user base
and continue evolving to meet the needs of
artists.
As the debate over the ethical use of AI in
the arts continues, it is crucial for platforms
to prioritize the rights and consent of artists.
The current legal battles, like those involving
Google, indicate that this issue is far from
resolved. Moving forward, the creative community
must advocate for stronger protections
and more transparent practices in the
use of AI technologies.
The migration of artists to platforms like
Cara is a powerful statement against the unconsented
use of their work for AI training. It
reflects a broader call for respect, integrity,
and ethical practices in the digital age. As
technology continues to evolve, it is imperative
that we create systems that honor and
protect the contributions of artists, ensuring
that their work is celebrated and not exploited.
ILLUMINATING THE CELESTIAL CANVAS:
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL
MOON DAY THROUGH ART
SPECIAL DAY
As we look up at the night sky, the
moon’s silvery glow has always
stirred our imagination, evoking a
sense of wonder and inspiration. In
July, we celebrate International Moon Day, a
day dedicated to our closest celestial neighbor.
Beyond its scientific significance, the
moon has been a muse for artists throughout
history. This special day segment delves
into the moon’s profound impact on art, from
ancient mythologies to contemporary creations.
A Celestial Muse Through History
The moon’s ethereal presence has been
a prominent subject in art for millennia. Ancient
civilizations revered the moon as a
deity, incorporating its image into their art
and architecture. The Egyptians depicted
lunar deities like Khonsu in intricate carvings,
while the Greeks celebrated Selene,
the moon goddess, in their sculptures and
pottery. These early artistic endeavors were
not just expressions of reverence but also attempts
to understand the moon’s mysterious
influence on earthly life.
The Moon in Romanticism
Fast forward to the 19th century, and the
moon’s allure remained undiminished. The
Romantic era witnessed a resurgence of interest
in the natural world and its emotional
impact on the human soul. Artists like Caspar
David Friedrich captured the moon’s melancholic
beauty in his landscapes, where lone
figures often gazed at the moonlit sky, contemplating
life’s existential questions. Friedrich’s
paintings, such as “Two Men Contemplating
the Moon,” epitomize the Romantic
fascination with the sublime and the infinite.
Modern Interpretations: Abstract and Surreal
The 20th century brought new artistic
movements that reimagined the moon’s
representation. Surrealists like Salvador
Dalí used the moon to explore the subconscious
mind, merging dreamscapes with
lunar imagery to create fantastical worlds.
Dalí’s “Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee
Around a Pomegranate a Second Before
Awakening” features a moonlit sky, adding
to the painting’s otherworldly atmosphere.
Abstract artists also found inspiration in
the moon. Joan Miró’s “Dog Barking at the
Moon” uses bold, simplified shapes to convey
the moon’s enigmatic presence, emphasizing
its role as a symbol rather than a
literal object. These modern interpretations
highlight the moon’s versatility as a subject,
capable of evoking a wide range of emotions
and ideas.
The Moon in Contemporary Art
In contemporary art, the moon continues
to inspire. Digital artists and photographers
use advanced technology to capture and
manipulate lunar images, creating stunning
visuals that blend science and art. For instance,
the works of artist Luke Jerram, who
created a detailed sculpture of the moon using
NASA’s imagery, offer an immersive experience,
bringing the moon closer to Earth
in exhibitions worldwide.
Street artists, too, have embraced lunar
themes. Murals depicting the moon can
be found in urban landscapes, transforming
mundane walls into celestial canvases.
These public artworks remind us of our connection
to the cosmos, even in the hustle
and bustle of city life.
The Moon in Literature and Film
Art extends beyond visual representations;
the moon has also been a central motif
in literature and film. Poets like Percy Bysshe
Shelley and Federico García Lorca have
penned verses inspired by the moon’s beauty
and mystery. In cinema, films like “A Trip
to the Moon” (1902) by Georges Méliès and
“Moonlight” (2016) by Barry Jenkins explore
different facets of the moon’s influence, from
whimsical adventures to profound human
experiences.
Celebrating International Moon Day
International Moon Day is an opportunity
to reflect on the moon’s enduring legacy
in art. As we celebrate this day, galleries
and museums around the world host exhibitions
featuring lunar-themed works, while
artists and enthusiasts participate in events
that honor the moon’s artistic significance.
Whether through painting, sculpture, photography,
or digital art, the moon continues
to inspire and captivate.
The moon, with its serene and captivating
presence, has been a timeless muse for artists
across cultures and eras. International
Moon Day reminds us of the profound connection
between our celestial companion
and the world of art. As we celebrate this
day, let us embrace the moon’s artistic legacy
and continue to explore its infinite possibilities
on our creative journeys.
So, next time you gaze up at the moon,
remember that you are not just looking at a
celestial body but at a source of endless inspiration
that has shaped and will continue
to shape the world of art.
SPECIAL DAY
EMBRACING A GREENER FUTURE:
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL
PLASTIC BAG FREE DAY THROUGH ART
As the world moves towards a more
sustainable future, the role of art
in advocating for environmental
change has never been more significant.
This July, we celebrate International
Plastic Bag Free Day—a day dedicated to
raising awareness about the environmental
impact of plastic bags and encouraging a
shift towards reusable alternatives. In honor
of this special day, we explore how artists
are using their creativity to inspire action and
promote a plastic-free planet.
The Origins of International Plastic Bag
Free Day
International Plastic Bag Free Day, observed
annually on July 3rd, is a global initiative
that started in 2009. The day aims to
educate the public about the dangers of single-use
plastic bags and to promote the use
of sustainable alternatives. This movement
is part of a broader campaign against plastic
pollution, highlighting the urgent need to
reduce our reliance on disposable plastics.
Art as a Catalyst for Change
Art has long been a powerful medium
for social commentary and change. In the
context of environmental activism, artists
are uniquely positioned to capture the imagination
and provoke thought. Through their
work, they can illustrate the devastating effects
of plastic pollution on our ecosystems
and inspire audiences to take meaningful
action.
One notable example is the work of artist
Chris Jordan, whose series “Running the
Numbers” visually represents the staggering
statistics of plastic waste. In one piece,
“Plastic Bags, 2007,” Jordan arranges hundreds
of thousands of plastic bags into a
striking image, symbolizing the number of
bags used in the U.S. every five seconds.
This visual impact makes the otherwise abstract
concept of plastic waste tangible and
urgent.
Transformative Art Installations
Art installations around the world are also
making powerful statements. The Washed
Ashore Project, founded by artist and educator
Angela Haseltine Pozzi, creates massive
sculptures of marine life using plastic
debris collected from beaches. These installations
not only highlight the scale of plastic
pollution but also demonstrate the potential
for creative repurposing of waste materials.
Pozzi’s work has traveled globally, educating
and inspiring communities to rethink their
plastic consumption.
In a similar vein, the “Plastic Ocean”
installation by artist Tan Zi Xi immerses
viewers in a sea of hanging plastic waste,
simulating the experience of being underwater
in a polluted ocean. This immersive
environment forces participants to confront
the overwhelming reality of plastic pollution,
fostering a deeper emotional connection to
the issue.
Community Art Projects
Community-based art projects are another
powerful way to engage the public in
the fight against plastic pollution. Initiatives
like Plastic Free July, which encourages individuals
to refuse single-use plastics for a
month, often incorporate art workshops and
public exhibitions. These events provide a
platform for people to express their creativity
while learning about the impact of their plastic
footprint.
For instance, the “Bag It” project invites
participants to create art pieces using old
plastic bags, turning waste into a resource.
This hands-on approach not only reduces
plastic waste but also educates participants
about sustainable practices in a memorable
and engaging way.
The Role of Digital Art
In the digital realm, artists are harnessing
technology to spread their message
further. Digital illustrations, animations, and
interactive web-based projects can reach a
global audience, transcending geographical
boundaries. Platforms like Instagram and
Pinterest are filled with powerful visual content
that advocates for a plastic-free world,
proving that art in the digital age is a formidable
tool for environmental activism.
Plastic Bag Free Day let’s us recognize
and support the artists who are using their
CELEBRATING THE ARTISTRY OF CHOCOLATE:
SPECIAL DAY
INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHOCOLATE DAY
As the sun climbs higher in the sky
and summer reaches its zenith, July
7th brings with it a celebration that
tantalizes the senses and indulges
the soul—International World Chocolate
Day. This special day offers not just an opportunity
to revel in the delightful taste of
chocolate but also to appreciate its artistic
and cultural significance. For this edition
of our art magazine, we dive into the world
where cocoa meets creativity, exploring how
chocolate transcends mere confectionery to
become an art form in its own right.
The History and Heritage of Chocolate
Chocolate’s journey from ancient Mesoamerican
civilizations to modern-day delicacy
is a rich tapestry woven with cultural
significance and historical milestones. The
ancient Maya and Aztec civilizations regarded
chocolate as a sacred and luxurious
item, consumed during rituals and reserved
for nobility. Fast forward to the 16th century,
and chocolate made its grand entrance into
European society, gradually transforming
from a bitter beverage to the sweet treat we
adore today.
This evolution of chocolate is not just a culinary
marvel but also a testament to human
ingenuity and artistry. The transformation
from raw cacao beans to refined chocolate
involves a meticulous process akin to that of
creating a masterpiece, requiring skill, precision,
and a touch of alchemy.
The Art of Chocolate Making
The craft of chocolate making is a blend
of science and art. From bean to bar, each
step is a carefully orchestrated dance that
involves roasting, grinding, conching, and
tempering. Artisanal chocolatiers infuse their
creations with passion and creativity, experimenting
with flavors, textures, and presentations
that elevate chocolate to an art form.
Consider the intricate designs on gourmet
chocolates, often resembling miniature
sculptures, or the delicate balance of flavors
in a single truffle. These creations showcase
not just technical prowess but also artistic
vision. Chocolatiers like Pierre Marcolini and
Jacques Torres have become synonymous
with chocolate artistry, pushing the boundaries
of what this medium can achieve.
Chocolate in Contemporary Art
Beyond the realm of confectionery, chocolate
has also found its place in contemporary
art. Artists have embraced chocolate as
a medium, using its unique properties to create
works that are as provocative as they are
ephemeral. From the chocolate sculptures of
artist Anya Gallaccio to Vik Muniz’s chocolate
syrup drawings, these works challenge
our perceptions and invite us to engage with
art in a multi-sensory experience.
One particularly notable example is the
work of Kazunori Horiuchi, who creates intricate
chocolate sculptures that defy gravity
and logic. His pieces, often displayed in galleries
rather than patisseries, blur the lines
between culinary art and fine art, inviting
viewers to appreciate chocolate in a whole
new light.
Chocolate Festivals: A Feast for the Senses
International World Chocolate Day is celebrated
with fervor across the globe, with
festivals and events that bring together
chocolate lovers, artisans, and artists. These
festivals are a feast for the senses, offering
a chance to sample exquisite chocolates,
witness live demonstrations, and even participate
in chocolate-making workshops.
Events such as the Salon du Chocolat in
Paris and the Chocolate Show in London
are renowned for their elaborate chocolate
sculptures and fashion shows featuring
chocolate-infused couture. These festivals
celebrate not just the taste but also the visual
and tactile pleasures of chocolate, highlighting
its versatility as a medium for artistic
expression.
Let us savor the flavors and the artistic
brilliance that chocolate embodies. Whether
enjoyed as a delectable treat or admired as
a work of art, chocolate continues to captivate
and inspire. It is a medium that bridges
cultures, histories, and artistic disciplines,
reminding us of the universal joy that this beloved
confection brings.
So, on July 7th, indulge in your favorite
chocolate delicacy and take a moment to
appreciate the artistry behind it. After all, in
BRUSHSTROKES FROM THE PAST
BRUSHSTROKES FROM THE PAST:
CLAUDE MONET’S WATER
LILIES (1906)
In the serene, picturesque village of Giverny, Claude Monet crafted one of the most iconic
series of artworks that forever changed the landscape of Impressionism: the Water Lilies.
Among these masterpieces, “Water Lilies” (1906) stands out as a testament to Monet’s evolving
vision and innovative approach to capturing the ephemeral beauty of nature.
Monet, a pioneer of the Impressionist
movement, was known for
his ability to encapsulate fleeting
moments and the transient effects
of light and color. His early works from the
1870s to the 1890s were characterized by
diverse contemporary subjects, ranging
from bustling urban scenes to serene rural
landscapes. However, as he approached the
turn of the century, Monet’s focus narrowed
to a single, timeless motif—water lilies.
The transition to this singular theme was
not abrupt but rather a gradual shift, deeply
intertwined with Monet’s personal life and
environment. In 1890, Monet purchased a
house in Giverny, where he meticulously designed
and cultivated a flower garden, complete
with a Japanese-inspired water garden
and a charming pond. This pond, spanned
by an elegant Japanese footbridge, became
the central subject of his later works.
Monet’s first series of water-lily paintings
(1897–1899) depicted the pond in its entirety,
with plants, bridges, and trees clearly
defined and anchored by a fixed horizon.
These early pieces still adhered to conventional
pictorial space, providing a structured
and somewhat familiar composition to the
viewer.
However, by the time he painted “Water
Lilies” in 1906, Monet had begun to break
away from these traditional constraints. In
this particular work, the horizon line is conspicuously
absent. Instead, Monet directs
the viewer’s gaze downward, onto the surface
of the pond itself. This shift in perspective
creates a spatially ambiguous canvas
where the boundaries between water and
sky, reflection and reality, are blurred.
In “Water Lilies” (1906), Monet masterfully
captures the interplay of light and shadow,
as clusters of vegetation float serenely amid
the reflections of the sky and surrounding
trees. The surface of the pond, with its delicate
lily pads and shimmering reflections,
is transformed into a tapestry of color and
texture. Monet’s brushstrokes, at once deliberate
and spontaneous, evoke the gentle
movement of water and the ever-changing
quality of natural light.
This innovative approach not only challenges
the viewer’s perception but also encapsulates
Monet’s belief that “one instant,
one aspect of nature contains it all.” By focusing
on the surface of the pond, Monet
creates a composition that is both abstract
and deeply immersive, inviting viewers to
lose themselves in the tranquility and com-
plexity of the scene.
Monet continued to explore and refine this
theme until his death in 1926, producing an
extensive series of water-lily paintings that
are celebrated today for their beauty and artistic
significance. Each work in this series,
including “Water Lilies” (1906), serves as a
window into Monet’s creative process and
his profound connection to the natural world.
In the broader context of art history, Monet’s
Water Lilies series represents a pivotal
moment in the evolution of modern art. His
departure from conventional spatial representation
and his emphasis on capturing the
essence of a moment laid the groundwork
for subsequent generations of artists. The
abstract qualities of his later works, in particular,
resonated with and influenced movements
such as Abstract Expressionism.
“Water Lilies” (1906) remains a beloved
masterpiece, admired not only for its aesthetic
beauty but also for its innovative approach
to composition and perspective. As
we reflect on Monet’s legacy, this painting
stands as a testament to his enduring genius
and his ability to find profound beauty in the
simplest of natural phenomena.
These partitions serve as hour markers, enhancing
watch’s unique charm.
Technical Excellence
The [RE]Master02 is powered by the Calibre
7129, an ultra-thin movement just 2.8mm
thick, derived from the Calibre 7121 used in
the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin models.
It offers a robust 52-hour power reserve, ensuring
its refined, modern silhouette.
Strap and Buckle: An Alligator Classic
Complementing the sophisticated dial is a
blue alligator strap with a contrasting finish,
secured by an 18-carat sand gold pin buckle.
This choice of material and color not only
piece, the longest ever crafted by Boucheron, transforms into a
shorter necklace with detachable earrings, showcasing the Maison’s
hallmark of multi-wear design. With 1816 diamonds meticulously
set, this necklace exhibits unparalleled suppleness and
realism, a feat achieved through 3000 hours of painstaking craftsmanship.
carat pear-shaped diamond. The contrast between the obsidian
and the snow-set diamonds mirrors the dramatic foamy waves on
black sand beaches.
Sable Noir: The Texture of Black Sand
In “Sable Noir,” Boucheron encapsulates the essence of black
sand through innovative 3D printing techniques. This trio of creations—
a necklace, earrings, and cuff—utilizes a polymer binding
pieces that reveal the sand’s iridescent texture. Each creation,
adorned with pavé diamonds, reflects the stark beauty of Iceland’s
black beaches.
Diamond Beach: Shimmering Ice and Sand
“Diamond Beach” captures the interplay of light and transparency
seen on icy shores. Sandblasted rock crystal gives these
pieces a frosty appearance, while diamonds set within the crystal
appear to levitate, creating a stunning trompe-l’œil effect. Hidden
pavé diamonds beneath the crystal amplify the sparkle, making
ARCHITECTURAL WONDER
ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS:
DOTSSS CHILDREN’S
MUSEUM
The Toronto Public Library’s Albert Campbell Branch is a masterclass in architectural innovation
and community-centric design. Originally built in 1971 and reimagined by LGA Architectural
Partners in 2022, this library demonstrates how thoughtful redesign can breathe new
life into a historic structure. Here are four standout features that make the Albert Campbell
Branch a beacon of modern architecture:
Iceberg Inspiration:
The design draws inspiration from icebergs, emphasizing the
hidden and mysterious aspects of its form. This concept is brought
to life through the use of semi-transparent tensile membranes,
which create a visually striking facade that changes with light and
perspective.
Flexible and Adaptive Spaces:
The museum features adaptable square box spaces connected
by atriums and courtyards, offering a flexible layout that allows for
a variety of exhibition setups. This design accommodates the unpredictable
nature of children’s exploration and learning.
Integration with the Environment:
Large windows throughout the building create a seamless connection
between the interior and exterior. This design choice not
only enhances the visitor experience but also allows the surrounding
landscapes and activities to become part of the museum’s exhibits.
78 July 2024 www.magzoid.com

These elements make the Dotsss Children’s Museum
ARCHITECTURAL WONDER
ROOF WITH 20 CONCRETE RIBS
BY ATELIER ZAFAR
In the bustling heart of Berlin’s Neukölln district, an old factory building has been transformed
into a stunning architectural marvel by Atelier Zafari. This project, a seamless blend of historical
preservation and modern design, offers a unique experience through its innovative use of
materials and structural elements. Here are four key highlights of this remarkable extension:
Innovative Roof Structure:
The centerpiece of the project is the roof, supported by 20 concrete
ribs. These ribs span 12 meters, creating a striking visual
rhythm and a sense of uniformity throughout the main room.
Seamless Integration with Light:
The concrete ribs are spaced 30 centimeters apart and fully
glazed, allowing natural light to filter through and transform the
space. This interplay of light and shadow changes with the course
of the sun, offering a dynamic and ever-changing interior atmosphere.
Harmonious Material Palette:
The use of exposed concrete and screed flooring contributes
to the minimalist and purist aesthetic of the space. This choice of
materials not only enhances the monumental feel of the room but
also maintains a delicate and light ambiance.
Thoughtful Space Planning:
The extension features a narrow, 15-meter-long corridor that
leads to the central entrance, flanked by two rooms with small
bathrooms. The open 120-square-meter main room, with its characteristic
concrete frames, creates a spacious and inviting environment,
perfect for various uses.
Atelier Zafari’s design beautifully merges functionality with artistic
expression, making the “Roof With 20 Concrete Ribs” a standout
piece in contemporary architecture.
BRAND LOGO
THE ICONIC DESIGN OF THE ARC’TERYX LOGO:
A SYMBOL OF INNOVATION AND
ADVENTURE
86 July 2024
www.magzoid.com

In the realm of outdoor gear and apparel,
few brands have managed to carve out as
distinctive an identity as Arc’teryx. Known
for its relentless commitment to quality
and innovation, Arc’teryx stands out not
just for its products but also for its visually
striking logo. The Arc’teryx logo, featuring
the skeletal remains of the Archaeopteryx
lithographica, is a masterclass in design that
perfectly encapsulates the brand’s ethos of
adventure, endurance, and a deep connection
to nature.
The Genesis of a Logo
The Archaeopteryx lithographica, the
creature depicted in the logo, is a critical
piece of the evolutionary puzzle. It represents
one of the earliest known birds, a
transitional fossil that bridges the gap between
non-avian dinosaurs and modern
birds. This choice of symbol is no accident;
it mirrors Arc’teryx’s mission to constantly
evolve and push the boundaries of what is
possible in outdoor apparel and gear.
Designed by Canadian graphic designer
Micheal Hofler, the logo distills the essence
of the Archaeopteryx into a minimalistic,
skeletal form. This design is both scientifically
accurate and visually compelling, making
it instantly recognizable. The clean lines and
intricate details reflect the brand’s precision
and dedication to craftsmanship.
Symbolism and Identity
The skeletal bird is more than just an image;
it’s a narrative device that tells a story
of evolution, resilience, and the drive to explore.
The Archaeopteryx’s ability to adapt
and survive in harsh environments resonates
with outdoor enthusiasts who rely on
Arc’teryx gear to thrive in challenging conditions.
The logo is a constant reminder of
the brand’s promise to provide durable,
high-performance equipment that enables
exploration in the most demanding environments.
Moreover, the choice of a prehistoric creature
underscores the brand’s commitment to
innovation. Just as the Archaeopteryx was a
revolutionary step in the evolution of life on
Earth, Arc’teryx aims to revolutionize the outdoor
industry with cutting-edge technology
and design.
Design Aesthetics
The Arc’teryx logo is a study of effective
design principles. Its monochromatic palette
ensures versatility, allowing it to be seamlessly
integrated across various mediums
and materials, from fabric to metal to digital
platforms. The skeletal structure is both
abstract and detailed, striking a perfect balance
that draws the eye and holds attention.
This balance is crucial for a logo that must
be both a practical identifier and a powerful
symbol.
The simplicity of the design also enhances
its memorability. In a market crowded with
outdoor brands, the Arc’teryx logo stands
out with its unique and easily recognizable
form. It is a testament to the power of good
design – simple yet profound, minimal yet
impactful.
The Arc’teryx logo is more than just a
brand mark; it is a symbol of the brand’s core
values and its relentless pursuit of excellence.
It tells a story of evolution, endurance,
and innovation, mirroring the journey of the
adventurous souls who don Arc’teryx gear.
In an industry where branding can often
be overlooked in favor of functionality, the
Arc’teryx logo stands as a shining example
of how powerful and meaningful design can
elevate a brand’s identity and connect with
its audience on a deeper level.
As Arc’teryx continues to evolve and push
the boundaries of what is possible, its logo
remains a constant reminder of its roots and
its unwavering commitment to quality and
innovation. It is a fitting emblem for a brand
that has made a name for itself by daring to
be different, and by leading the way in the
world of outdoor adventure.
