Chris Swanson It might not be Christmastime, but crowds will soon be singing “Joy to the World.” But not the Christmas version. They’ll be resurrecting and oldie but a goodie by Three Dog Night as they take to the stage at Preservation Plaza at Arnolds Park Amusement Park at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21. They will be joined on the stage that night by the Little River Band. “Three Dog Night and Little River Band are two iconic bands with unbelievable catalogs of music, we would be fortunate to have either one and for us to host both in one evening will make for a magical night of music,” said Chris Swanson, the director of marketing for HAPI. Three Dog Night and Little River Band are both musical icons. From the years of 1969 to 1974, “no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records or sold more concert tickets than Three Dog Night,” according to the group’s bio. Some of their biggest hits include “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),” “Joy to the World,” “Black and white,” “Shambala,” and “One.” They are led by one of the founding members of the band. “The hit-filled concerts are performed for generation-spanning audiences by Danny Hutton (founder/lead vocalist) and Michael Allsup (guitar), Paul Kingery (bass/vocals), Pat Bautz (drums), Howard Laravea (keyboards) and David Morgan (vocals),” their bio reads. “The band’s now-famous name refers to native Australian hunters in the outback who huddled with their dogs for warmth on cold nights; the coldest being a ‘three dog night.’” Similarly, the Little River Band has been entertaining people with their music for decades. “Their worldwide album, CD, and digital downloads amass to more than 350 million. LRB continues to deliver distinctive harmonies and vocal abilities under the direction of 41 year LRB veteran, lead vocalist and bass player Wayne Nelson,” according to the Little River Band’s biography. “To date, Wayne has contributed his talents on 24 of Little River Band’s albums. LRB was honorably dubbed ‘the best signing band in the world’ by Eagles founding member, the late Glenn Frey.” Swanson is excited to be bringing these two standout bands to perform on the shores of West Okoboji Lake and he’s excited to hear them play. “It’s tough to pick favorites, but if I had to choose a few songs from each LITTLE RIVER BAND band, my selection for Three Dog Night would be ‘Joy to the World,’ ‘Black and White’ along with ‘Mama Told Me (Not to Come).’ As for Little River Band, it would to be ‘Lady,’ ‘Lonesome Loser’ and ‘Reminiscing.’ For many years, I’ve pulled out the ‘Happy Anniversary’ song and will sing it to my wife too,” Swanson said. DISCOVER! | JULY 13, 2024 Event | 19 Racing around the LAKES University of Okoboji gears up for Homecoming Weekend For more than 40 years the University of Okoboji has welcomed alumni and visitors to the Iowa Great Lakes for a weekend of fun highlighted by the Homecoming Races. This year the races are scheduled for Saturday, July 20, with packet pickup available from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday, July 19, at the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce office in Arnolds Park. West O Beer hosts the Bibs & Beers kick off party all day Friday as well offer that race participants can bring their official race bib for discounted pints. The following morning the fun begins bright and early with the triathlon at 7 a.m., followed by the half marathon and 10K at 8 a.m. before the final event, the 5K gets started at 9 a.m. with all events finishing down the Arnolds Park Promenade. Water quality has been an ongoing question due to recent flooding. According to Zankowski things are looking up in that regard with the triathlon planned to function as normal. A backup plan to switch to a duathlon is in place if it’s deemed the water is still less than ideal for swimming. Registration ranges from $40 for the 5K up to $150 for the team triathlon event. “This is the 46th year for this event and it’s just a big tradition here in the Iowa Great Lakes,” said Kiley Zankowski, Okoboji Tourism director. “I think a huge part of it is that people love to travel and experience different races and we’re in a unique place here to offer a lot for people to do. Some will come to do the race and bring, three, four, five, 10 people to support them during the race and then enjoy a week or long weekend in Okoboji.” Plenty have signed up to do exactly Community Involvement: “A great part of Homecoming is the amount of people we work with to pull it off,” Zankowski said. “We’re really grateful for Arnolds Park Fire and Rescue who help provide emergency assistance every step of the way. We work with the city and the police department to ensure the safety of the routes and to ensure a good and safe experience for everyone. The amusement park, DNR, Lakeside Lab, there are so many hands involved making sure we’re doing our due diligence.” Water and aid stations throughout the races also involve community members ranging from private homeowners along the routes to the Chamber Ambassadors, and local high school athletic teams. “It’s really great to see the whole community get involved,” Zankowski said. that, with more than 960 participants already registered from 25 states across the country. “That’s half the country that will be represented here in the Iowa Great Lakes,” Zankowski said. “We had many last year here for the first time beginning their own traditions as well as those who maybe ran with their mom in years past and are now running with their own kids.
