Side Trip: 

Something’s been bugging me lately. 

It’s not that I’ve forgotten something 

and struggling to remember. It’s not 

that anything upsetting happened and I’m 

fretting over a solution. 

No, I am being 

bugged by bugs. 

I’m not usually the 

person who gets bit; 

it’s my husband who 

is the unfortunate 

one who can attract 

a mosquito within 

moments of stepping 

outdoors, and it 

doesn’t even need to 

be evening. 

Something was different 

these last few 

days. I tried to sit outside 

in the afternoon to read but couldn’t 

get through more than a paragraph before 

having to chase away a gnat. The day before 

it was the tiny little biters that you can’t 

even see, but I definitely felt their sting. 

And somewhere the mosquitoes got to 

me too. I have a bite behind my ear, on my 

neck and on my shoulder. Either one very 

hungry bugger got at me, or a crew of them 

descended on me unaware. 

My theory is the abundance of standing 

water is something they thrive on. But they 

can go away anytime now. 

Remarkably, the one outdoorsy place I 

was over the weekend that seemed bug-free 

was Preservation Plaza in Arnolds Park for 

several nights of free concerts. Thank you to 

the park or the city for whatever they did to 

keep the bugs at bay. 

I’ll be there again this weekend to enjoy 

another concert — this time a tribute to 

ABBA. Hopefully, we won’t be sending out 

an “SOS” or meeting our “Waterloo” over a 

bunch of bugs, but instead feeling grateful 

for a bug-free zone and saying, “Thank You 

for the Music.”

Who would have thought the 

Disney film “Freaky Friday” 

— with mother and teenage 

daughter switching bodies for one 

fateful 24-hour period — could successfully 

be recreated as a musical for 

the stage? 

Someone did. And remarkably it 

works. 

Director and choreographer Josh 

Walden takes the highly unrealistic 

concept of two people literally 

switching spots, brings it to the stage 

in a comic book set, and makes the 

entire thing touching, whimsical and 

wonderful at the same time. 

It takes a village to create this show 

— 21 actors, some playing multiple 

roles, 14 production team members 

and six musicians. The music is not 

familiar, but it is catchy, and tunes 

like “No More Fear” and “Today 

and Ev’ry Day” could easily become 

memorable favorites. 

Walden’s vision of a comic book 

backdrop is well-executed by set 

designer Brandon PT Davis. Oversize 

rectangular boxes, painted in 

single dimension, rotate to show the 

home’s kitchen on one side, and the 

school hallway on the other. These 

two scenes are supplemented with 

a bus stop scene, a few landmarks 

around the city, and other minor 

scene changes.

Lighting and sound are designed 

by Savannah Bell and Kayla Sliger, 

respectively. 

Leading the cast as Katherine Blake 

is guest actor Jesse Graham Galas. 

OST regulars have seen her in a variety 

of roles over the years and she is 

always good. It’s actually very odd to 

see the strict and disciplined mother 

suddenly blurt out a bit of slang, 

police officer an attitude or make 

gestures to her friends. 

Playing opposite Graham Galas in 

the daughter role, Ellie Blake, is Mallory 

Womeldorff. Womeldorff makes 

a very believable teenage girl with 

plenty of attitude. She is a strong 

singer and performer, blending 

speaking and singing rather effortlessly. 

Fellow high schoolers in the cast 

are played by several Stephens College 

students, most of whom we have 

already been impressed with in the 

opening musical of the season two 

weeks ago. Watch for Wyatt Logan, 

Sydnee Sisk, Olivia Evans, Kaley 

Sikora, Keira Anderson, Hugh Paul, 

Chloe Anderson and Wyatt Munsey, 

among others. 

Playing the part of Fletcher Blake, 

Ellie’s little brother who either gets 

in the way or gets forgotten, is local 

guest actor Ethan Truong. He does 

a great job with an important part 

‘Freaky Friday’ is adaptation 

of popular Disney film 

and masters multiple hand puppets 

throughout the show. 

Guest actor Shayne Sims plays 

Mike Riley, fiance to Katherine and 

role model to Fletcher. The show’s 

closing “mini me” scene was a nice 

touch. 

To complement the comic book’s 

cardboard set are two-dimensional 

cardboard props — a sandwich, an 

hourglass, frogs from the biology lab 

and the wedding cake. Those were all 

great touches, but made one wonder 

why some other props weren’t cutouts 

— the photographer’s camera, 

the ingredients for seven-layer bars, 

and the wedding bouquets, to name 

a few. Fae Riemann-Royer is props 

supervisor. 

Costume design covers the extremes 

— straight-laced mom to 

teenage punk. The stark contrasts 

definitely help define the characters. 

Watch for details in the second act as 

mother and daughter become more 

comfortable in their new skin and 

adapt bits of the other’s style. Mom 

wears canvas sneakers and a leather 

studded belt, for example. Daughter 

loses her camouflage jacket and oversize 

sweater vest. 

Costume design is handled by 

Zach Phelps, with assistance from 

Paige “Blue” Trew. 

Musicians for the show include 

Richard Biever, piano, Greg Forney, 

drums, Tim Schumacher, guitar, Dalton 

Petersen, bass, Rod Shedenhelm, 

trumpet, and Anna Petersen, reeds. 

This is a long show — right at two 

hours without the intermission — and 

these musicians play an integral part. 

“Freaky Friday” is an all-around 

fun production, with a great blend 

of life lessons, humor and compassion. 

The cast and crew proves with 

this one that you can indeed create 

Disney magic on a small stage. F

classic harmony never goes out of

The Lettermen have proved that 

truth with more than five decades in the music 

industry, from their first hit single “The 

Way You Look Tonight” in 1961, to the tours 

that have taken them around the globe, the 

group has certainly stood the test of time. 

And this weekend they circle back to the 

Iowa Great Lakes for another performance at 

the Roof Garden Ballroom in Arnolds Park. 

The show is set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 

14, with general admission tickets priced at 

$29 in advance or $34 at the door. 

“This concert goes with our whole ‘Boomer 

and Crooner’ series — we’ve had Sinatra 

and Neil Diamond tributes already and 

both had great receptions,” said Chris Swanson, 

marketing director for Historic Arnolds 

Park, Inc. “So we know there’s always a place 

for good old American classic music from 

the ’50s and ’60s. These guys have been here 

before and love playing the Roof Garden.” 

And the audience loves hearing them perform. 

While “The Way You Look Tonight” is a 

song almost everyone has probably heard at 

least once in their lifetime, their second single 

“When I Fall In Love” actually did even 

better, topping out at No. 7 on the chart. 

Over the ensuing years, The Lettermen 

have recorded 75 albums, several certified 

gold, and numerous hits including “Theme 

From A Summer Place,” “Goin’ Out Of My 

Head/Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” “Put 

Your Head On My Shoulder,” “Hurt So 

Bad,” and “Shangri-La.” 

“They’re one of those harmonious bands 

with several big hits over their time in the 

music and are well known throughout the 

world actually, which is a testament to their 

talents for sure,” Swanson said. “It’s nice to 

see them out touring still and we’re happy to 

have them back in the Iowa Great Lakes.”

For one evening, you can travel 

to Korea without having to 

have a passport, get on a plane 

or pack a suitcase. 

All you have to do is head to the 

Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji 

at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 21. 

Chef Won Kim will return to 

Okoboji to host a Summer Korean 

Flavors cooking class after first coming 

to Okoboji last year. 

“In 2023, Won Kim was invited to 

show his graffiti art in a solo exhibit 

at the Pearson Lakes Art Center. As 

Danielle Clouse Gast, the visual director 

and I were researching some 

of his recent art works, we discovered 

he was just as prolific in his 

cooking as his art, so the idea of 

him also teaching a cooking class 

showcasing Korean cooking was 

natural,” said Jean Quinn, the culinary 

director at the Pearson Lakes 

Art Center. “The culinary event sold 

out quickly and was so well received, 

we asked him to return this summer.” 

Kim’s artistic creativity seems to 

know no bounds as he has expanded 

his areas of expertise to three very 

different pursuits. 

“Won Kim is often referred to as 

a ‘triple threat,’ excelling as a chef, 

graffiti artist, and deejay. Kim’s 

family moved to Chicago from 

Korea when he was an infant and 

as he grew up he was inspired by 

the city’s vibrant culinary, visual art 

and music cultures. He trained at Le 

Cordon Bleu, but he never thought 

he would run a restaurant,” Quinn 

said. “All this changed when he 

met two local restaurateurs and the 

three created the highly acclaimed 

Kimski, a Chicago eatery offering an 

unlikely yet delicious blending of 

Korean and Polish foods. No doubt, 

Won’s drive for excellence has been 

instrumental in his successes and 

was recently quoted, ‘It’s real easy to 

be ordinary, some people are complacent. 

I’m not like that.’” 

This cooking class will be a fun 

and unique one for the Pearson 

Lakes Art Center. It will give participants 

a glimpse into a new cuisine 

for some of them. 

“This class will focus on learning 

about the unique flavor combinations 

and cooking techniques in 

authentic Korean cooking,” Quinn 

said. “Won feels strongly about 

supporting Midwest communities 

and will be using locally sourced 

products from Krafty’s Meat Market 

and West O Beer.” 

Quinn is hoping that this class 

with give people a chance to take a 

break, try something new and enjoy 

a night out. 

“It’s been a very tough summer 

for our communities dealing with 

all the extreme weather issues. 

Those of us at Pearson Lakes Art 

Center want to provide a welcoming 

space to gather, relax and be 

re-energized by all the cultural arts 

offered. And Chef Won Kim does 

not disappoint! Guests can expect 

an extraordinary evening tasting

Hull to host annual SummerFest 

celebration on July 18-21 

Life is going to be sweet in Hull. 

The town will be hosting its annual 

SummerFest celebration on July 

18-21. The four-day event is sure to have 

something for everyone in the family with 

the biggest draw being its parade at 10 a.m. 

Saturday, July 20. 

It’s touted to be “the biggest candy parade 

in N’West Iowa.” 

The Foreign Candy Company is headquartered 

in Hull and always makes sure to 

pass out tons of candy along with the other 

parade participants. 

The parade is, by far, one of the biggest 

events in the lineup. 

“Our parade is definitely the most popular 

event we have at SummerFest and that’s 

because it is a great time for family and 

friends to come together for all ages,” said 

Jess Wheeler, the chamber executive director 

of the Hull Chamber of Commerce. “We 

are known for having the largest candy parade 

in Northwest Iowa. Who doesn’t love 

good candy for free?” 

Two events that are back by popular 

demand include the pedal pull for the 

younger kids and the street dance. 

”We are bringing back our SummerFest 

Street Dance. SoulRoot will be performing 

again this year and we are super excited 

about that. Gates will open at 8:30 p.m. 

and the band will go on around 9,” Wheeler 

said. “This year we are charging an entry fee 

of $20 per person with $5 of that going to 

those affected by the flooding in our area.” 

Some other events in the lineup will 

include; the Firemen’s Feed on Friday, the 

Boyden-Hull High School Summer Theater 

Performance on Friday and Saturday, 

the Legion Pancake Breakfast on Saturday 

morning and the Music in the Park with 

Ice Cream on Thursday night, which will 

be followed by the community movie night 

showing “Migration.” 

They will be offering one exciting new 

event this year — the Hullger Games. 

“We are excited to be adding the Hullger 

Games to our list of events this year,” 

Wheeler said. “Hullger Games is designed 

for teams of four, ranging in ages 13-19

light and uplifting time in the midst of recent

But not the Christmas version. 

They’ll be resurrecting and oldie 

but a goodie by Three Dog Night as 

they take to the stage at Preservation 

Plaza at Arnolds Park Amusement 

Park at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21. 

They will be joined on the stage that 

night by the Little River Band. 

“Three Dog Night and Little River 

Band are two iconic bands with unbelievable 

catalogs of music, we

deliver distinctive harmonies and 

vocal abilities under the direction of 

41 year LRB veteran, lead vocalist and 

bass player Wayne Nelson,” according 

to the Little River Band’s biography. 

“To date, Wayne has contributed 

his talents on 24 of Little River 

Band’s albums. LRB was honorably 

dubbed ‘the best signing band in the 

world’ by Eagles founding member, 

the late Glenn Frey.” 

Swanson is excited to be bringing 

these two standout bands to perform 

on the shores of West Okoboji Lake 

and he’s excited to hear them play. 

“It’s tough to pick favorites, but if I 

had to choose a few songs from each

for Saturday, July 20, with packet

kick off party all day Friday as well

The following morning the fun 

begins bright and early with the triathlon 

at 7 a.m., followed by the half 

marathon and 10K at 8 a.m. before 

the final event, the 5K gets started at

Water quality has been an ongoing 

question due to recent flooding. 

According to Zankowski things are 

looking up in that regard with the

“This is the 46th year for this event 

and it’s just a big tradition here in 

the Iowa Great Lakes,” said Kiley 

Zankowski, Okoboji Tourism director. 

“I think a huge part of it is that 

people love to travel and experience 

different races and we’re in a unique 

place here to offer a lot for people to 

do. Some will come to do the race 

and bring, three, four, five, 10 people 

to support them during the race and 

then enjoy a week or long weekend 

in Okoboji.”

“A great part of Homecoming is the amount of people we work with 

to pull it off,” Zankowski said. “We’re really grateful for Arnolds Park Fire 

and Rescue who help provide emergency assistance every step of the 

way. We work with the city and the police department to ensure the safety 

of the routes and to ensure a good and safe experience for everyone. 

The amusement park, DNR, Lakeside Lab, there are so many hands 

involved making sure we’re doing our due diligence.” 

Water and aid stations throughout the races also involve community 

members ranging from private homeowners along the routes to the 

Chamber Ambassadors, and local high school athletic teams. 

“It’s really great to see the whole community get involved,” Zankowski 

said.

be represented here in the Iowa 

Great Lakes,” Zankowski said. “We 

had many last year here for the first 

time beginning their own traditions 

as well as those who maybe ran with

tradition that is at the core of the 

Lakes area and lives on through this 

event.”
