Business" play a vital role in providing financial assistance to deserving individuals and

HISTORY
The genesis of the Women's Council of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers was born over forty-plus years
ago. However, the vision and determination of a few women made the Council reality years after the inception of our
national organization NAREB®.
NAREB's history states that at their organizing meeting in Tampa, Florida, in 1947, the following National Business
League's Convention, there were twelve representatives from different states that committed themselves to the
formulation of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. Among those founders was a woman, Mrs. Naomi
Black of Detroit, Michigan.
A year later at the first NAREB® convention held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, one of the highlights of that convention
was the role of women in the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. At that meeting, it was agreed that women
brokers be recognized officially in two capacities. One of the women participated in the election process as officers and
two as appointed officers in NAREB®.
By the time the fifties roared in, women were joining NAREB at an alarming rate. The early fifties indeed gave women
inspiration, confidence and hope for better business opportunities in real estate. It was within this period that the
"Detroit Brokerettes" were formed. The Brokerettes were the "first" supported group of minority women bonding
together to organize a women's group in real estate. Several members of the Brokerettes aided in the forming of the
Women's Council of NAREB®.
In 1971, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the NAREB’S Annual convention, Daisy Donavan of Detroit Michigan; Laura Seale
of Brooklyn, New York and Iris Yateman of Indianapolis, Indiana founded the Women’s Council of the National
Association of Real Estate Brokers. Officers and bylaws were established and Laura Seale became the first president of
the Women’s Council of NAREB.
Today, women comprise 53 percent of the National Association of Real Estate Broker's membership with women
participating in all divisions and aspects of the organization.

Women’s Council of the Empire Board of Realtists was founded in 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia. The original organizers
were Ms. Dorothy L. Kelly, Mr. Joe Richardson, and the late Jocelyn C. Peters. Women’s Council of Realtists was
cultivated under the leadership of the Empire Real estate Board President Mr. W.C. Ponder (deceased).
Ms Jocelyn C. Peters was elected to serve as the First President upon the inception of the Women's Council of EBR, the
"Stay at Home Tea" was established as the Council's major fundraiser. The "Stay at Home Tea", continued for several
years, and the Council looked forward to this event as membership grew.
In 1989, Mary Nell Austin was elected President of the Women’s Council of Realtists and the Annual “Rose Ball”
became the Women’s Council’s newest and most popular fundraiser. The “Rose Ball” provided educational college
scholarships for deserving young students in Atlanta. During this time, several community outreach programs were
developed. One such program was “The Women’s Homeless Shelter”. Past President Bobbie Kennedy Sanford is
attributed with its implantation. Women’s Council of Realtists became very instrumental in preparing the community
for home ownership by providing education and information through Homebuyer’s seminars.
Other community outreach ventures are continuously held at the Empire Board of Realtists® Headquarters at 686
Ashby Street (currently known as Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard). Blood Drives are held to assist the American Red
Cross with needed donations. With the Women’s Council headquarters being in the West End community, makes it a
convenient location to donate blood through the assistance of the Women’s Council of Realtists.
In 2002, during a period when the lives of men and women living in the United States of America changed forever,
President Cassie Chappelle Stanley launched the “911 Prayer Breakfast”. After Mrs. Stanley’s period in office as
President of the Local Women’s Council of Realtists ended, she was elected as the President of the Women’s Council of
the National association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB)
The Atlanta Chapter (Empire Board) has been extremely active with the National organization. They were so active
that five (5) of the Atlanta Chapter members were elected to serve as Presidents on the National Level. These great
leaders were: Jocelyn C. Peters (deceased), Mrs. Barbara A. Alexander, Connie Stokes (Dekalb County
Commissioner/Former State Senator), Mrs. Jean Brooks-Eberhardt and Mrs. Cassie Chappelle-Stanley.
The Empire Board of Realtists Women’s Council empowers a dynamic group of professionals, both men and women to
achieve true leadership. This very unique organization celebrates the diversity in the market and the interests of the
community. The Women’s Council of Realtists is a positive force amongst Real Estate professionals.

Portia Bruner is the host of the nationally distributed lifestyle show
"Portia"-- a program designed to inform, empower and inspire people
who value a daily dose of positivity.
"Portia," which airs weekdays on Fox 5 Atlanta and weeknights on Fox Soul, focuses on issues of
faith, family, finances, physical health and mental health. The show debuted in Fall 2022 and was
just renewed for a second season for Fall 2023.
Portia Bruner brings decades of experience as a television journalist and motivational speaker to
her new role as a talk show host. From the legendary South African President Nelson Mandela to
children giggling on the playground, she’s always loved talking to people whose stories leave the
kind of impression that makes a difference in the lives of others. The opportunity to have candid
and thought-provoking conversations–particularly with remarkable Black women from across the
country-is just an extension of Portia’s mission to tell unforgettable stories about women, men and
children of all backgrounds.
Before her transition from Fox 5 News anchor, Portia built a reputation as a compassionate and
dynamic storyteller who genuinely cares about the people whose life events she covered. She
covered crime, breaking news, government affairs, natural disasters and human-interest stories. As
a former consumer reporter, Portia has always had a passion for giving viewers valuable
information they can use in their own lives.
Before joining FOX 5 News in 2003, Portia was the consumer reporter for WTKR-TV in Norfolk,
Virginia and an anchor/reporter for WAPT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi. She started her
professional career as a researcher and producer in the Consumer News Unit of NBC4-TV in
Washington, D.C. — just a few weeks after she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Howard
University in 1995.
The Denver, Colorado native became a vocal advocate for therapy and mental health awareness
after overcoming her own struggles with depression, anxiety and a subsequent diagnosis of
psychogenic stuttering that took her off the air for three months in 2017. She publicly and
unapologetically shares the benefits of therapy, prayer and meditation in her own self-care routine.
Portia enjoys mentoring girls, young women and aspiring journalists and as an avid thrift shopper,
she loves sharing her strategies for budget-friendly fashion and money-saving styles. As the proud
daughter of two Air Force veterans, she also has a passion for putting a spotlight on women and
men who serve in the military.
While she has received several awards for her community service and journalism, Portia’s most
rewarding job title is "Mom." She has two wise, witty and wonderful teenage boys who keep her
motivated to be a voice for other mothers who juggle careers, family and their own sense of health
and well-being.

Carmen Simmons is a trailblazer in the
entertainment industry, known for her unwavering
dedication to telling stories that matter. Her media outlet,
N’Style Atlanta, has become an authoritative source for
lifestyle and entertainment news in the city. As the founder of N’Style
Atlanta, Carmen has been instrumental in offering opportunities to Black journalists
to create content that truly represents the community in their voice.
Over the course of her career, Carmen has encountered many challenges. Shortly
after graduating from Clark Atlanta University, she lost both of her parents to AIDS,
which was an incredibly difficult time in her life. Despite the emotional and mental
stress that came with it, she managed to graduate from university and pursue her
dreams of working in the entertainment industry.
In 2009, Carmen found herself homeless again after her job closed during the
recession. However, she did not let this setback deter her. Instead, she continued to
press forward, relying on her faith in God and her desire to honor her late mother’s
memory.
Even with so many personal setbacks, Carmen continued to find a way to succeed.
She managed to land music publishing and record deals for clients, and successfully
executed fundraising events to support families experiencing homelessness in Metro
Atlanta. Her YouTube page for N’Style Atlanta has received over 1.9 million views
with little marketing efforts, a testament to her ability to connect with her audience
through authentic storytelling.
Carmen’s greatest professional achievement so far has been licensing an unscripted
occu-series about N’Style Atlanta and licensing 5 episodes to Fox Soul. Her presence
on the hit reality show N’Style Atlanta Uncut, current streaming on Fox Soul, has
catapulted her to new levels of success and visibility.
Through it all, Carmen credits her success to her faith in God and her family’s legacy
of creativity and resilience. As the CEO and Executive Producer of N’Style Atlanta a
prominent figure in the entertainment industry, she continues to pave the way for
Black voices to be heard and stories to be told.

WHO IS MELISSA?
Dr. Melissa D. Hill, an accomplished
entrepreneur and a visionary leader, is wholeheartedly committed to the
mission of motivating, empowering, and enlightening individuals on their
path to achieving their aspirations. The pursuit of excellence is an enduring and pervasive motif that has
shaped every facet of her life's journey. Driven by an unwavering dedication to the service of others, she
has seamlessly woven this profound commitment into the very fabric of her existence.
THE BACK STORY
Originating from the rural town of Lincoln, Alabama, Melissa is the middle
child of a Vietnam veteran and a lifelong educator. Her academic journey has been marked by remarkable
accomplishments, including graduating with honors as the Salutatorian of Lincoln High School and
receiving numerous scholarships, such as the Temple-Inland Foundation Award, The American Legion
Silver Scholastic Award, & the Alabama A&M Full Tuition Academic Scholarship Award, to name a few.
Most notably, she was also chosen as the first USDA 1890 National Scholar for Alabama A&M Univ.
Dr. Hill's exceptional academic performance continued through her undergraduate & graduate studies. She
graduated cum laude from A&M and earned the USDA Forest Service Outstanding Achievement award.
Following her undergraduate studies, Melissa pursued both a Master's & Doctorate of Philosophy degrees
at Clark Atlanta Univ., completing each program with honors in an unprecedented 4-year timeframe.
CAREER: THE PIVOT
After completing her studies at CAU, Dr. Hill embarked on a career with
a career with the federal government at the FDA Atlanta Center for Nutrient Analysis. There, she served as
a regulatory chemist, responsible for evaluating the safety of food, nutritional supplements, medical foods,
and baby products. However, in 2016, she made a bold transition to pursue her true passion in the real
estate and mortgage industry, leaving behind a lucrative senior journeyman chemist position.
In her new career, Melissa swiftly ascended through the ranks, becoming a sales manager within the first
year, followed by branch manager the next year. When Alterra Home Loans introduced the Legacy Home
Loans Division, Melissa was appointed as the branch manager for the founding anchor Atlanta location. In
2020, when Homespire Mortgage Corporation sought to expand on the east coast, Melissa was appointed
to lead the Georgia region, overseeing the Atlanta branch office.
In 2021, Melissa took a leap of faith and ventured into the world of entrepreneurship, and opened her
independent mortgage brokerage, MDH Mortgage, where she presently holds the position of
