to Geraldine with new solo show
Arts on Tour show Red Heavens is coming to
Geraldine on 19 July, hosted bythe Geraldine
Community Arts Council. Thesoloplayiswritten,
directed, andacted by MartineBaanvinger,who
performed Solitude in Geraldinefiveyears ago.
At the centre of Red Heavens is Angelina
Moleta,anItalian immigrant. In 1906,aged16,
shelefther crimson-skyvolcanicislandStromboli
forD’Urville Island in theMarlborough Sounds
with her husband Vincenzo, who was also her
cousin.D’Urville’s scarletsunrises, hermarriage
and the island’s wider social milieu, and the
remoteness rhyme with the things of her
Strombolianheritage.
Martine, aGoldenBay resident andfounder
of theatre company DramaLAB, learned of
Angelina through Gerard Hindmarsh, fellow
Bay resident and grandson of Angelina and
Vincenzo. He wrote Red Heavens about his
grandmother. “I read the book and was
immediatelyintrigued,” Martinesays. “Isolation
intrigues me. As an immigrant -Icame from
Holland 20 years ago -New Zealand, nature,
remoteness, and going out innature, intrigue
me.”
The“rollercoaster”production-“fromfunny
to deep-sad,it’scontinual,” says Martine-sees
“It’seasier, in away,ifyou’realone.Idon’t
have to cueonanyoneelse. Idon’t have to wait
for others. It gives alot offreedom. There’s
some improvisation,but most is scripted.Ifind
it’s empowering.”
Geraldine Community Arts Council chair
Elaine Taylor says, “Martine always delivers
powerful,dynamic,and passionatedrama,using
her craft tobring stories tolife, mesmerising
andmemorable.”
Formed relatively recently, the band is a
product of some longstanding musical friendships.
Difficult to pigeonhole,asubstantialportion of
the band’s repertoire is 1930s-style swing.
Popular in theirhometownasanenergetic dance
band, they always pack the dance floor. In
addition, Skin &Bone has written asizeable
number of original tunes that tend toward
acoustic rock andcontemporaryfolkmusic from
Aotearoa.
The band recently released its first album,
Last BustoBrockville,featuring acollectionof
these original tunes together with asampling
of that old-style swing. The band also prides
itself on close-harmony vocals from its three
lead singers.
