Seed potato orders are now open, says home<br />
andschool presidentStaziraeRoberts.<br />
In two-kilogram bags, theHighlanderseeds<br />
producehigh-yieldcropsofwaxywhite-fleshed<br />
potatoes in 80 to 90 days.Not so humble after<br />
all. Stazirae says the timing ofthe fundraiser,<br />
whichwillsee onetonne of seedsreturn$6,000<br />
forthe home andschool’sprojects, means“you<br />
canget them in earlyfor Christmas.”<br />
Seed sales are anew take on the group’s<br />
annual potato fundraisers, which have, until<br />
this year, focussed onfresh potatoes. Stazirae<br />
explains,“In 2018,[potato seed producersand<br />
then-school parents] Andy andTraceyMcKay<br />
donatedthemand plantedtheminthe paddock<br />
beside theschool.The kids dugupand sold the<br />
newpotatoesand used themoney to buildthe<br />
BMXtrack on thepaddock.”<br />
The initiative ongifted growing spaces<br />
continueduntil theMcKay children finished at<br />
Woodbury School. The family is keen to keep<br />
helping the home and school by giving seed<br />
potatoes, which the school’s children will bag<br />
andsell. Stazirae says,“Onehundred percent<br />
gratitude tothe McKays.” Andy McKay says,<br />
“It’s something we can dofor the local school<br />
that benefittedour children so much.”<br />
Woodbury School Home and School seed<br />
potatoes are $12 per two-kilogram bag.<br />
