present three trophies and<br />
eight individual shooting<br />
coins.<br />
Unit commander major<br />
Cezarne Rodgers said it felt<br />
good to win the trophies and<br />
competitions, mostly because<br />
it showed processes and<br />
training at the army cadet unit<br />
worked.<br />

The three trophies<br />
presented were the Gunson<br />
Cup, the Victory Shield, and Te<br />
Rangatahi trophy.<br />
An <strong>Ashburton</strong> team<br />
comprising of staff sergeant<br />
Brodyn Gabites,warrant<br />
officer class Liam Collett, staff<br />
sergeant Ashleigh Clarke,<br />
corporal Gideon Kuipers,<br />
corporal Michael Wills and<br />
sergeant William Brown won<br />
the Gunson Cup. In November<br />
lastyear they competed in the<br />
Gunson Cup event in<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>,then had their<br />

The sign has the building’s new<br />
name on it Kōwhai House.<br />
Williams said the headquarters<br />
had traditionallybeen referred to<br />
as ‘‘the base’’.<br />
She said staff and board members<br />
felt it was time to chooseaname<br />
reflecting theorganisation’s core<br />
purpose. Kōwhai Housewas chosen<br />
becausethe kōwhai flower is the<br />
nationally recognised symbol of<br />
hospice.<br />
Historically the kōwhai flower<br />
andbark is used in Māori medicine<br />
for healing.<br />
‘‘This name communicates more<br />
clearly our purpose in providing a<br />
caring, welcoming environment for<br />
people facing lifelimiting illness<br />
andbereavement. It is from Kōwhai<br />
House, that we extend free support<br />
to enhance the quality of life for<br />
locals on their endoflife journey,’’<br />
Williams said.<br />

alongside other army, navy and<br />
air cadets from around New<br />
Zealand to find the best scores.<br />
The unit has now been<br />
awarded the Gunson Cup seven<br />
times since 2009.<br />
The unit was awarded the<br />
Victory Shield for being the top<br />
South Island cadet unit for<br />
shooting. It was the fourth time<br />
the unit claimed the trophy.<br />

being the most efficient army<br />
cadet unit in New Zealand, was<br />
presented at the evening,<br />
following the unit winning it<br />
for the sixth time since 1996<br />
last year. To win the trophy, the<br />
unit had to undergo an<br />
inspection and the complete a<br />
series of challenges.<br />
The shooting coins were<br />
presented to eight cadets. They<br />
weresilver coins for having<br />
achieved second placings in<br />
the Ffennell postal shooting<br />
Vote for Aorangi<br />
competition. The competition<br />
is open to every New Zealand<br />
cadet unit across the army,<br />
navy and air.<br />
Members of the team were<br />
sergeant William Brown, staff<br />
sergeant Ashleigh Clarke,<br />
sergeant Wessel Blignault,<br />
staff sergeant May Penjueli,<br />
sergeant Sebastian van<br />
Rooyen, corporal Michael<br />
Wills and former members<br />
corporal Jack Robinson and<br />
corporal Gideon Kuipers.<br />
Aiming high<br />

Edward White, George Lash, and Henry<br />
Pottinger all live on farms. They have been<br />
able to share knowledge that could be<br />
covered in the AgriKidsNZ grand final from<br />
their respective fields, ranging across dairy,<br />
sheep, crop and beef.<br />
The other two primary school teams<br />
representing Aorangi are The Waihi Bulls of<br />
Henry Phillips, Arthur Redfern and Jack<br />
France from Waihi School, and Milking<br />
Manics of Greer Neal, Olivia Strachen and<br />
Leah Wilson from Duntroon Primary School.<br />
The three teams are part of astrong<br />
representation from Aorangi. Alongside<br />
Gareth McKerchar competing in the New<br />
Zealand Young Farmer of the Year, in the<br />
Junior Young Farmers competition<br />
teenagers James Clark and Jack Foster, of<br />
Mount Hutt College, and Ella Hole and<br />
Shelby Henson of Geraldine High School.<br />
Edward, George and Henry are grateful for<br />
the community support they have received in<br />
the lead up to tomorrow’s grand final.<br />
It has included help from parents,<br />
sponsors, school teacherincharge Debbie<br />
Boon, and their school peers.<br />
They have also been doing community<br />
work to gain points for Aorangi team in the<br />
FMG Region Off competition by making<br />
meals for asick family, ran an agri day at<br />
school to collect cans of food for the<br />
foodbank, tree planting, firewood, and<br />
helped with break fencing on afarm.<br />
Longbeach School has astrong history of<br />
competing for the event.<br />
Vote for Aorangi in the FMG Region Off online<br />
competition andgointhe draw to win a$500<br />
Prezzy card. Thecompetition,being run in<br />
conjunction with the FMG YoungFarmers<br />
grandfinal, will benefit all Aorangi contestants,<br />
if they win. It will see $5000 towards the IHC<br />
Calf &Rural Scheme, $1000 to the senior<br />
contestant, $1000 to be split among the junior<br />
contestants and$1000 to be split amongthe<br />
