Waimakariri Bridge wins hearts of visitors
By SHELLEY TOPP
Afirsttime entrant has won the People’s
Choice Award at the Corcoran French
Kaiapoi Art Expo with his image
Waimakariri Bridge.
Peter Wright, who owns Godzone
Photography in Rangiora's High Street,
also sold the large photograph and one
of the other three smaller ones he had in
the expo which was held in the Kaiapoi
Club last weekend.
‘‘The exhibition was alot bigger than I
thought it would be,’’ Peter said.
‘‘It was really good.
‘‘I am very pleased Ientered and will
definitely be entering work in it again
next year."
Jackie Watson, chairwoman of the
Waimakariri Arts Trust, which organises
the expo, said Waimakariri Bridge was
‘‘an unusual but beautifully composed
shot which certainly has the wow
factor.’’
This year’s expo featured 151 artists
who contributed 752 artworks, alongside
the efforts of young upandcoming
artists from 18 Waimakariri schools and
homeschoolers, in the Pak’nSave
Rangiora School Kaiapoi Art Expo.
The expo began with abig crowd
waiting to get in on opening night last
Friday, and large crowds attending on
Saturday and Sunday.
Blackwell’s Department Store
complemented the busy artsfocused
weekend on Saturday with its popular
Fire and Ice Festival which began in the
car park at noon.
It featured Auckland ice artist Victor
Cagayat, live music, food trucks and
aerialists, plus face painting and
workshops for children in the afternoon
to coincide with the Have AGoevent in
the Kaiapoi Club.
The fun continued into the evening
with Victor’s ice sculptures lit up for the
occasion, lightemitting diode (LED)
artists, fire poi dancers, stilt walkers
and live music from Latin guitarist
Sanchez, all adding highlights to the
event, which also attracted large crowds.
Andrew Blackwell said he was pleased
with how the event went.
‘‘A lot of people came out.
‘‘It had avery family, community feel
to it which was what we wanted.’’
The event took alot of organising, with
Andrew's daughter, Katherine Williams,
doing alot of work, with the help of many
supporters.
‘‘They don’t come on board wanting
huge recognition, but they all play avital
part,’’ Andrew said.
Woodend Bypass on the move
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
ANorth Canterbury community leader is
pleased the Woodend Bypass is finally
going ahead, but hopes promised safety
improvements will not be forgotten.
WoodendSefton CommunityBoard
chairperson Shona Powell says residents
had been waiting for safety
improvements since Waka Kotahi New
Zealand Transport Agency began
consulting with the communityeight
years ago.
TransportMinister Simeon Brown and
Waimakariri MP Matt Dooceyvisited
Woodend on Friday (July 5) to announce
planning will begin on the Belfast to
Pegasus Motorway, which includes the
bypass.
‘‘I am pleased we are making progress
and we can sort of think, ‘yeah, it is going
to happen’,’’ Ms Powell said.
‘‘It has beenreally difficult for alot of
peoplefor along time and now we just
want to see things moving.
‘‘We want to see Woodend being a
community without State Highway 1
barrelling through it.’’
Proposed safety improvements
included road widening, wider
centrelines and safety barriers,
roundabouts at the Woodend Beach
Road and Williams Street intersections
and acrossing refuge for people using
bus stops near Pineacres.
Ms Powell has also been advocating for
apedestrian and cycle underpass
between Pegasus and Ravenswood, along
with the cycleways proposed to link
Woodend with Kaiapoi and Pegasus.
Ms Powell says there were also safety
concerns north of Pegasus.
Residents had successfully lobbied for
an 80kphspeed limit between Pegasus
and Waikuku, and a60kph limit through
Waikuku.
Waimakariri Mayor DanGordon has
also been lobbying to replace the Ashley
River SH1 bridge, with awiderbridge
and aclipon cycle way.
Friday’s announcement allows Waka
Kotahi to get on with planning the
Woodend Bypass route, design work and
Back on track ... Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey and Transport Minister Simeon Brown
Friday morning.
costing the project.
‘‘It will help boost productivity and
facilitatethe fastermovement of freight
across New Zealand,’’ Mr Brown said.
‘‘Locally, the Woodend Bypass is
important for Christchurch, Canterbury
and the South Island.’’
The agency has been asked to consider
all funding options, including aroad toll
and public /private partnerships.
‘‘If tolling is what is recommended, we
will do it,’’ Mr Brown said.
Waka Kotahi director regional
relationships, James Caygill, said the
announcement allows the agency to talk
to landowners, and to relook at the route
to ‘‘see what has changed in the last 10
years’’.
‘‘Ravenswood wasn’there 10 years ago
and there has been alot of growth.’’
Aroute to the east of Woodend, from
Pine Acres, north of Kaiapoi, to the
Pegasus Roundabout was designated for
the Woodend Bypass by Waka Kotahi in
2014.
Mr Caygill said the Pegasus
Roundabout would need to be replaced
and the agency was aware of two shingle
pit lakes near Pine Acres.
An underpass and cycle ways linking
Woodend with Pegasus and Kaiapoi were
also ‘‘on the table’’, he said.
Mr Gordon said the Woodend Bypass
was one of the largest roading projects
the district has seen.
‘‘We welcome that direction and we
want to see it completed. The community
has been waiting for along time.’’
He said the council looked forward to
seeing the detailed design and was ready
to partner with Waka Kotahi to see the
bypass delivered.
The North CanterburyWearable Arts
weekend of the October school holidays.
An organiser Jane Andersonsays the
others to enter.
She says the venue is still at the
Rangiora Baptist Church Auditorium
where the audience will be wrapped
aroundthe stageand runway for optimum
‘‘They will still get to go up to WOW —
just not this year,’’ she says.
‘‘There are many great prizes for all
New tee block ... Ron Adams, vice club captain of the Kaiapoi Golf Club, who is also alife member of the club, teeing off from the club's
Amicable solution to stray shots
By SHELLEY TOPP
Golf balls straying from the Kaiapoi
Golf course have teedoff private
property owners, apreschool, the
occasional pedestrian and vehicle.
But asolution has been found to
wayward balls endangering children,
pedestrians and property.
With all parties working together,a
tee block has been shifted to try to
avoid stray tee shots going off course,
instead of down the fairway.
Club captain Sean Regan says some
golf balls strayed into Sovereign
Palms properties and the Sovereign
Star Preschool and Nurseryacross
the road in Williams Street.
The stray balls highlighted the need
to improve the health and safety of the
club’s neighbours, pedestrians, and
vehicles driving past the course.
Club chairman Jack Oldridge began
aseries of meetings with
representatives of Suburban Estates,
Sovereign Palms property owners, and
the Nursery and Preschool, to discuss
the issue.
There were amyriad of complicated
contributing factors to consider, and
the decision process involved input
from many people.
However, in the end the solution was
arelatively simple, but took alot of
work to achieve the required result.
‘‘We have changed our tee block on
the fairway that is parallel to Williams
Street,’’ Sean says.
Last Thursday the club marked the
change at 9.30am with a‘‘ceremonial
tee off’’ by life member and vice club
captain, Ron Adams, on the
reconstructed tee block on the number
four fairway.
The club chairman, Jack Oldridge
says he was pleased with the outcome.
‘‘The fact that we have been able to
work together, understand the
relative positives and take
responsibility to achieve apositive
outcome is what has made this
partnership memorable.’’
Tracy Frew, the general manager of
Suburban Estates is also pleased with
the solution.
‘‘It has been an amazing outcome,’’
she says.
Staff recruitment headache for Kaikoura DC
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Ever thought of working in Kaikōura?
Staff recruitment has been headache in
the popular tourist town in recent years,
says Kaikōura District Council chief
executive Will Doughty.
There have been vacancies in the
building team for the last two years, but
the position of building control manager
has finally been filled, with Glen Vaughan
having stepped into the role on July 1.
‘‘We are consistently chasing our tail
looking to get some replacements and we
have had good support from contractors
and other councils in the building space,’’
Mr Doughty says.
‘‘We have had good support remotely for
the last 18 months with no building control
manager, sothat team has been doing well.
But it is good to get afulltime role based
here.’’
Over the last few years the council has
relied on contractors to get through its
building consents and inspection
workload, with support from neighbouring
councils.
The council is still looking for abuilding
control officer.
Despite the lack of permanent building
staff based in Kaikōura, the council
received afavourable accreditation
assessment earlier this year from
International Accreditation New Zealand
(IANZ).
While the council has filled akey
position, its long serving three waters
engineer, Bruce Apperley, has signalled
his intention to retire at the end of the
year. The council will also be recruiting
soon for more staff in the operations and
finance teams, following the adoption of
the Long Term Plan, Mr Doughty said.
Constraints in resources in recent years
meant councils were having to ‘‘look at
smarter ways of doing things’’.
He said the council was able to
overcome some of its challenges by
working closely with other councils,
particularly Hurunui.
The two councils shared services such
as information technology and Kaikōura
has enjoyed good relationships with other
Canterbury councils and the Marlborough
District Council.
Staff recruitment has been achallenge
for other employers in the district,
particularly tourism operators seeking
seasonal workers. Alack of available and
affordable housing, and ashortage of short
term rental accommodation were
contributing to making recruitment
difficult.
Communityfocus for RangioraPromotions
BySHELLEY TOPP
Rangiora Promotions has been
relaunched to showcase the
organisation's new name and focus of
‘‘doinggood in our community’’.
The relaunch was held in conjunction
with the organisation’s annual meeting at
the Rangiora RSA Club on Tuesday
evening last week.
It was a‘‘call to action’’, prompted by
changestothe board of directors last
year, funding challenges, objectives no
longer fit for purpose, and aneed to
ensure the Rangiora community's needs
were being met, the organisation’s
chairwoman, Debs TaylorHayhurst, said.
The organisation, which was originally
known as Our Town Rangiora and reestablished
in 2009 as Rangiora
Promotions Association, whichhad a
businesspromotion focus.
It will now be known as Rangiora
Promotions, with aims to ‘‘engage,
connect and excite’’.
It will also aim to be aselfsustaining
organisation which is less/not reliant on
grants, but also be able to afford to ‘‘give
Supplying Growers Since 1981
backtothe community’’ and ensure every
event is financially viable, while also
fulfillingthe best interestsofthe
Rangiora community.
This means some events will not be
rerun and others will be adapted to fit.
‘‘Our events need to be financially
viable and may, or will be ticketed, and
we will need your help as acommunity
member, business owner, sponsor or
supporter,’’ Debs said.
Adifficult decision had been made not
to run Big Splash this year as it ‘`no
longer aligns with our purpose’’, she said.
However the organisation is looking at
other ways to assist the Stroke
Foundation, the charity behind Big
Splash.
Eats and Beats has been given a
reprieve, but anew format is being
developed ‘‘to suit the economic climate’’,
with details for that expected next year.
Rangiora Promotions will also support
the popular Winter Festival, which is
expected to be held on August 10, and will
be running anew event, Harry Potter and
the Quiz of Champions to be held at the
Rangiora RSA Club on September 21,
HARFORD DOMESTIC HOME GARDENER RANGE
with teams of up to six costing $20 per
person.
Other events this year include arevised
Rangiora Christmas Fair in November,
an adapted event previously known as
Christmas Celebration Night,its
Christmas favourites, the Rangiora
Toyota SantaParade and the McAlpines
Mitre 10 MEGA Party in the Park on
December 8.
Next year it will run anew event,
Rangiora’sFunday Sunday, in March.
Other possibilities are being
considered including aDressUp
Convention, aCinema Night,aHalloween
Event, aWinter Pool Party, and aDoGood
in the Community initiative.
The relaunch was also acall for more
support from the community. ‘‘We need
your help,’’Debs said.
There are many ways people can help,
such as becoming aboard member,
sponsor, business supporter, or a
community member supporter.
At large votingonly viable option for KaikouraCouncil
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Electing asmall council at large is ‘‘the
only viable option’’, says Kaikōura
District Council chief executiveWill
Doughty.
The council has opted to stick with the
status quo, of electing amayor and seven
councillors at large, for the 2025 and
2028 local government elections,
following its representation review.
‘‘We’re not looking at instigating any
geographical wards,’’ Mr Doughty said.
‘‘There aren’ttoo many options for a
small district like ours.
‘‘It is one of the strengths of asmall
district orsmall communitiesthat
everyone is elected at large.’’
There was some dissatisfaction to the
north of the district, with some residents
in the Clarence Valley and Kekerengu
expressing apreference to be part of the
Marlborough district, Mr Doughty said.
‘‘We had some good discussions
during the Long Term Plan consultation
when we wentupthere (Clarence and
Kekerengu).
‘‘We have justgot to continue having
thosediscussions and take on board
those concerns.’’
In areport to arecentcouncil
meeting, corporate services senior
manager Peter Kearney said award
system would be ‘‘unworkable’’ because
of the small population.
‘‘The council’s view is that acommon
community of interest exists at the
district level.
‘‘Subdividing the district into wards
would not be apracticable option and
would riskfragmentation of the
district’s characterand shared
community of interest.’’
The Kaikōura district’s population
was 4230, as at June last year, making it
the second smallestinNew Zealand,
behind the Chatham Islands.
In addition to the permanent
population, there were agrowing
number of holiday homes.
The council voted against establishing
aMāori ward in October, after
consulting with Te Rūnanga oKaikōura.
Kaikōura has enjoyed one of the
highest voter turnouts, with more than
62% voting in both the 2019 and 2022
local government elections.
Residents have until August 12 to
make submissions on the proposal to
retain the existing representation
arrangements.
Boxing helping youths to find their feet
By ROBYN BRISTOW
5
Boxing turned BoDean Blackburn’s
life around.
When she took up the sport she was
not into exercise, and thought boxing
would be ‘‘simple and easy’’.
But on discovering the training
involved she quickly changed her mind.
BoDean stuckwith it however,
becoming afit, trim, successful athlete.
Now the accomplished boxer, who
fought for six years with the Leithfield
Boxing Club gaining alot of success, is
giving North Canterbury youths a
chance to follow in her footsteps.
‘‘I really, really love boxing. For a
long time it was my life.
‘‘I am now enjoying seeing what kids
get out of it, and how they grow,’’ she
says.
When BoDean finished fighting she
went on to spend five years studying
sport and exercise.
But the thirst for boxing remained.
Last year when the Leithfield Boxing
Club dissolved, BoDean was presented
with the ideal opportunity to start her
own club.
‘‘I’ve always wanted to build my own
club —aplace where Ican foster a
sense of belonging and afamilylike
environment,’’ she says.
Through hard work and perseverance
the Hurunui Boxing Club was born.
Based in Amberley in the old Scout
Den, whichher former boxing club
called home, BoDean is training a
family of boxers.
She has five registered boxers —
Jamie Johnson 17, Ted Johnson 14,
Toby Kirkus 13, Hayley Channings 13,
Shakaiyah GorrieCashel 12.
‘‘Eachone of these kids has had
incredible success.
‘‘All together they have had 10 fights,
coming away with some titles, such as
Team Hurunui ... BoDean Blackburn (centre) with some of her young upandcoming
boxers.
PHOTOS: SUPPLIED
the South Island Golden Gloves.’’
BoDean says it is difficult to find
fights for her two registered girls, as
there are not many girls in the sports.
‘‘These girls are incredibly talented
fighters, but is hard to showcase their
talents in this sport especially in their
weight category.
‘‘We are anew club, and we are the
new ones to watch.
Ahuge turning point for the club
recently was having local Hurunui boy,
Toby Kirkus, fight an incredibly hard
fight for the Jack Grant Belt.
He is now known as one to watch as an
up and coming prospect.
Toby was doing karate before joining
the club, but did not compete at
competitions.
It is the first time afighter from
Hurunui has won the belt which stays
within the Canterbury Association
Clubs.
‘‘We must put it up at every
Canterbury Club tournament.
‘‘We must choose adifferent person
within our club to fight to keep it within
our club,’’ says BoDean.
‘‘Shakaiyah GorrieCashel will be
defending the belt on July 13 to
hopefully keep the belt in the club.’’
Training is held two nights aweek,
with athird added as competition time
nears.
‘‘We train incredibly hard for every
bout, often training those athletes who
have upcoming matches with one on
one sessions.’’
BoDean is slowly enlisting some help
in her endeavours, with arugby coach
and afew keen parents lending ahand.
‘‘More help would be great. Iwould
Winning belt ... Hurunui fighter, Toby
Kirkus with the Jack Grant Belt he won
recently.
love new people to come along and see
what it’s about,’’ she says.
But her biggest worry is finding the
funds to ‘‘keep the lights on’’ at the club,
and getting some funds together to
replace the gloves and equipment
donated to it by the Leithfield Club
when it was dissolved, much of which
has been in use since 2014.
BoDean says despite being anotforprofit
club, it has to pay $5 aday in daily
power charges, plus what it uses on top
of that.
The bill is around $2500 ayear.
She says some participants pay fees
which is awesome, but if they can’t
‘‘that is okay too.’’
‘‘We have run acouple of fundraisers
and Iamsearching for grants at present
to upgrade the gloves and gear.’’
Mayor Marie Black
strong leadership
Canterbury Mayoral Forum has recently
taken the opportunity to meet with
visiting Members of Parliament, Minister
Mark Mitchell, Emergency Management
and Recovery and Police, Minister Chris
Bishop Infrastructure, Housing and RM
Brown minister for Local Government,
Transport and energy.
Mayoral colleagues Mayor Dan Gordon
and Mayor Craig Mackle met with
Minister Simeon Brown at Waimakariri
Council Offices last Friday, along with
Minister Matt Doocey, to demonstrate
our shared support for the Woodend
Bypass and matters of significancein
regard to the water reform –Local water
Done well.
These opportunities provide a
platform for us collectively to
demonstrate the joint leadership for
Canterbury, the country’s largest region
and to highlight the concerns about the
level of investment from central
government for South Island projects.
Last weekend, we celebrated with our
granddaughter Hazel at her 5th birthday
party with all the joy that comes with
watching alittle person express somuch
delightand excitement for being abig
girl and going to school. It certainly
allowed me to think about all the
committed educators who live and work
within our Hurunui District.
Ihave the good fortune to be invited to
some of our schools for avariety of
celebrations and Iamoften left reflecting
on the energy and optimism that is
demonstrated by not only the educators
but also the students.
Iwant to take this opportunity to
acknowledge all educators in our
preschools, where the teachers nurture
the minds of our youngest to be curious
and confident learners to primary and
secondary students who are fortunate to
have an opportunity to learn across a
range of subjects and become competent
to enter the world of tertiary education,
Given we are in weekone of the July
break, Iwant to acknowledge the work of
our teachers, and recognise the
contribution to our district, you inspire
our students and help them find their
preferred career path.
The Hurunui District Council, through
our community team, is working closely
with our schools to continue to provide
some additional means to allow students
to flourish, our team genuinely caresand
AScottish dance loveaffair
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Scottish dance brings Audrey
Mattinson joy.
‘‘It is good for the body and brain, as
its good exercise and you can not stop
thinking otherwise it all goes wrong,’’
she says.
Audrey has retired from teaching
Scottish dance at the RangioraScottish
Country Dancing Club after more than
three decades.
‘‘I am 85 after all,’’ she says.
But despite arthritis taking its toll on
an ankle, she still keeps her hand in
teaching asmall group of eight at the
Oxford Scottish Dancing Club every
Thursday afternoon during the winter
months.
‘‘I decided to keep that up while I
can,’’ she says.
Audrey says people enjoy the
camaraderie of Scottish dancing, and it
is agreat way to meet people.
‘‘You dance in sets of three, four or
sometimes five couples.
‘‘Its great and very social,’’she says.
‘‘You dance with someonedifferent
in all the dances, because you change
partners.’’
Audrey started Scottish dancing
because it was something she ‘‘always
wanted to do.
She went along to aclub in Rangiora
in the early 1980s, and learnt all the
steps she could from an excellent tutor,
along with patterns, and the dances.
When the club stopped operating she
went to the Rangiora ScottishDancing
Club under the tutelageofJean
Saunders, and began helping her with
teaching, taking over when Jean
retired.
‘‘I am only slightly musical, anddid
find one step difficult, but eventually
picked it up.’’
The club meets on Friday evenings
Farewell ... Audrey farewelling meals on wheels five years ago.
in the winter, because dancing during
the summer months is too hot.
Audrey bought books and music from
the Royal Scottish Country Dance
Society in Scotland, building up
resources, and agood following.
‘‘We started with records, then
moved to tapes, and finally to CDs
which we put into the computer and
played,’’ she says.
Audrey’s sparkling personality kept
everyoneontheir toes,and reeling to
the music.
Audrey belonged to two clubs in
Christchurch whereshe shared her
knowledge of Scottish dancing, and
danced for athird.
‘‘I had to give teaching up because
you couldn’t teach dancing while using
awalking stick,’’ she says.
Dancing did not occupy Audrey’s
every waking moment. She also
PHOTO: FILE
delivered meals on wheels in
Rangiora. For 30 years she drove the
same route, after beginning the
volunteer work in her 50s.
She did it for enjoyment, and just
like her dancing, she loved meeting
and helping people.
Audrey made some great friends
during her time, as she does at the
Dudley Park pool which the Scottish
Dancing Club helped raise funds for
through dance.
She learnt to swim in her 30s, and
today walks in the pool due to torn
tendons in her arms, and her painful
ankle.
Audrey was also aRangiora Library
volunteer for more than 20 years.
Today Audrey enjoys reading, doing
jigsaws, and relaxing in the sunshine at
home in Ashley Village on the outskirts
of Rangiora.
From the movies
to Broadway
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Aconcert featuring well known music from
movies, along with Broadway hits, is being held
in Rangiora next month.
The Rangiora RSA Club Band will present The
Movies to Broadway,onSaturday, August 10, in
the Rangiora Town Hall.
The band, formerly Rangiora Brass,
amalgamated with awellknown Christchurch
based band, Canterbury Brass, earlier this year.
With difficulty in retaining players, Canterbury
Brass approached Rangiora about
amalgamating, the result being astrong wellresourced
band.
It’s played on Anzac Day at the Christchurch
Citizens Anzac service in the Christchurch
Transitional Cathedral, as well as at the
Rangiora RSA Cenotaph service and afternoon
concert.
The band also recently travelled to Greymouth
to compete in the Marlborough Wast Coast Brass
Band Contest, winning the combined Cand D
grade section.
The band will compete in the Canterbury
Provincial contest later in September.
Following their success last year in winning
the Dgrade National contest in Dunedin, and
again winning at the Canterbury contest, they
were promoted into the CGrade, adding anew,
exciting challenge for the band.
It is now in the process of forming an auxiliary
band, which will perform in the community and
provide apathway into the main band or beyond.
The band can offer tuition and instruments for
anyone, especially youths, who are keen to earn
an instrument or pickup from where they left off.
Any enquiries can be made to
rangiorabrass@mail.com.
The concert will start at 2pm in the Town Hall.
Tickets —$20 for adults, children under 14, $10
—from the Town Hall Cinemas booking office, or
online at townhallcinemas.co.nz/liveshows.
Amilestonebirthday bashfor Four Squares
By JOHN COSGROVE
The Hawarden Four Square has
been in operation as agrocery
store for 120 years —all in the
same building.
Now allied with Foodstuffs,
the store is part of the
nationwide Four Square
birthday bash this month as the
brand celebrates 100 years of
serving local communities.
Hawarden is one of four Four
Square stores in North
Canterbury along with
Culverden, Hanmer Springs and
Cheviot, and its owners Dan and
Wendy Hodgen say they are
proud to continue providing
grocery services to their small
rural community.
The couple bought the
business in 2007 as an
investment, expecting to move
on after five years.
‘‘But we’re still here today, 17
years later, which has gone by
very quickly,’’ says Wendy.
They and their two young
children moved back to Dan’s
hometown of Hawarden, after
working in Christchurch.
Wendy, originally from
Masterton, had been working for
Rabobank, while Dan worked in
the insurance industry.
‘‘We saw the opportunity come
up to buy the lease on the store
so we took it.’’
Today Wendy runs the Four
Square while Dan works on the
nearby family farm in
partnership with his family.
‘‘The people here in the
Hurunui are lovely, they keep us
going,’’ says Wendy.
‘‘To us they are like our
Business coowner... Wendy Hodgen in front of the Hawarden Four Square.
extended family, all are very
loyal and we all work together in
our small rural community
looking out for each other.
‘‘We’ve been through alot
since we came here with three
earthquakes, Covid and some
tough years.
‘‘But I’m still amazed at the
generosity of the locals here.
‘‘At times it’s been very
humbling, like when Covid
stopped everything, we had
former staff members call us up
offering to come down and help
out if our staff were sick.’’
She says the staff they have
had over the years are still
amazing. Many still come down
and chat as they consider them
their local store.
The couple bought the lease
off John and Dorothy Andrell
who had run the store for the 15
years prior.
Kevin and Annette Thom had
leased it in 1989 and rebranded
it as aFour Square store, four
years before the Andrells took it
on.
Before the Thom’s, Eric Wood
had changed the store from
being an original Farmers Cooperative
store into an A1
grocery, whiteware and
haberdashery store in 1984.
PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE
Eric’s son Brian later bought
the store off his father in the mid
1990s and still owns the land and
building today.
Brian says his father Eric had
migrated his family from
Christchurch to Hawarden in
1974.
‘‘He was transferred from his
role as the menswear manager at
the Riccarton branch of
Farmers, to become the
manager of the Hawarden store.
‘‘He managed the store until
he bought it outright in 1984.’’
Brian says he father loved
motoring around the Hurunui
District selling whiteware and
all the bits and bobs families
need.’’
The Hawarden Farmers Cooperative
store was opened in
1902, quickly becoming the main
supplier of goods for the area as
well as amajor employer for
people in the township.
It had agrocery department,
hardware, drapery, shoe repair
and counter staff worked off lists
provided by customers.
Staff would select all the
produce and materials then
bring them back for the
customers.
They even installed aSanta
cave at Christmas with a
resident Santa in attendance.
Four Square’s roots stretch to
July 4, 1924, when asquare was
drawn around the number ‘4’ in
the calendar by local grocer and
Four Square founder, JHeaton
Barker, of Auckland, to
remember adate for acoop
meeting.
He liked the design and
selected it as the name he would
give to the cooperative buying
group of local grocers because
they ‘‘would stand Four Square
to all the winds that blew’’.
Barker’s cooperative made
history by opening New
Zealand’s first ever selfservice
supermarket, in 1948 in
Onehunga, Auckland.
This soon became the norm for
grocery retailing, with the
revolutionary idea changing the
way Kiwis shopped by allowing
them to choose their own
groceries,rather than relying on
aclerk to collect them off the
shelves for customers,creating
the modern Four Square brand.
Cook book for children
By JOHN COSGROVE
NEWS
The North Canterbury News, July 11, 2024
11
Ohoka book author Sue Heazlewood has
followed up her recent award winning Tails of
Tangleby Gardens series with her latest offering
Tea Party Recipes.
The book is part of an ongoing commitment by
Sue to produce one children’s and one adult
cook book ayear going forward.
Her latest children’s story/cook book focuses
on 24 recipes, with photography and
illustrations, and is designed to help children
learn to create in the kitchen.
It all started for this known property
developer, back in 2015 when while on holiday
she says she got bored one day and decided to
write achildren's story book.
‘‘When Ifinished Idiscovered Ienjoyed the
experience so much, Iwanted to write more, so
Isat down and wrote an adult cook book.’’
The popular Tails of Tangleby series was
inspired by the oversized playhouse Sue built
on her expansive garden in Ohoka for her six
children, hoping they would have some grand
children for her to spoil in the coming years.
In the meantime the grandmother of three is
writing books combining her passion for
children, cooking and gardening.
‘‘I was in the tree house one day when I
thought, kids love Peter Rabbit so let’s create
stories about the animals who have come out to
live in Ohoka from the city.Detailing their
adventures and discovering what they cooked as
they went along on their journey.’’
The tales tell the story of two delightful little
rabbits and ahost of friends including frogs and
hedgehogs, discovering the world around them
through travel, exploration and food.
‘‘The books are so popular they have become
bonding books between generations.
‘‘Grandparents have them in their homes
already for when their grandchildren come to
stay.
‘‘The books are read at nighttime and the
next day the children want to cook the recipes,’’
she says.
She has also launched an online Kids' Club
best entertaining cookbook at last year’s
Gourmand World Cookbook awards, while Tails
of Tangleby 2 picked up the best children’s
Birdsong Project
By SHELLEY TOPP
Impressive progress has been
made on Hurunui’s Birdsong
project after only one season of
planting at the Scargill
Motunau Recreational Reserve
last winter.
The communitydriven
project aims to eventually
restore more than 10 hectares
ofland back to native
vegetation and bring back the
abundant birdlife the area
previously supported. The
ecological restoration project
was made possible by a$100,000
anonymous donation from a
Christchurch couple who
wanted to put money towards a
project that had both
community and environmental
outcomes.
The community planting days
for the project this winter are
this Sunday, July 7; Sunday,
July 28 and Sunday, August 18.
All planting days start at 1pm
at the reserve.
CD levy called for
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury councils are calling
for aCivil Defence levy to help
councils respond to emergencies.
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon
raised the idea of alevy based on the
Earthquake Commission model with
Local Government Minister Simeon
Brown, during his visit to Rangiora
last week.
He was joined by fellow mayors
Marie Black (Hurunui) and Craig
Mackle (Kaikōura) and Waimakariri
MP Matt Doocey.
The Government is preparing new
legislation to update the Civil Defence
Emergency Management Act (2002).
The Waimakariri District Council
has spent $10 million of unbudgeted
expenditure over the last years due to
weather events in the district.
‘‘I outlined to Minister Brown my
desire to see alevy in place for Civil
Defence emergencies, similar to that
of the Earthquake Commission
model,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘This would help alleviate some of
the huge costs faced by local
authorities in the wake of extreme
weather events and natural
disasters.’’
Mr Gordon says the idea has
previously been raised with Waka
Kotahi New Zealand Transport
Agency and Emergency Management
and Recovery Minister Mark Mitchell.
Arecent Canterbury Civil Defence
and Emergency Management
committee meeting found the region’s
mayors were wary of new legislation
introducing centralised control in an
emergency.
‘‘We have avery good system in
Canterbury,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘The system we operate isn’t
broken, but there are things which
may be beneficial to other parts of the
country.’’
He says Canterbury has shown
resilience in its response to
earthquakes, weather events, fire and
drought.
Mrs Black says the latest flood
events in Hawke’s Bay showed the
importance of good communication
between councils.
‘‘Often it is the district council
which bares the brunt of support for
its community in anatural disaster, as
we are more in touch with our
community.
‘‘Your own neighbourhood is the
cavalry coming to support you, it is not
about waiting for the cavalry to
arrive.’’
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake in
2016 reinforced how important local
systems were in an emergency,
Hurunui District Council chief
executive Hamish Dobbie says.
While there was good support from
Christchurch and Waimakariri
following the earthquake, it was local
people who stood up and organised
stuff.
‘‘When people talk about largescale
events, like if the alpine faultline goes
off, you know support is going to go to
Christchurch, but it may not come out
to the rural areas.
‘‘So it is all very well having
centralised systems.
‘‘We all need to be masters of our
own destiny.’’
Swim for water safety
By JOHN COSGROVE
Swimming 28 laps of the Dudley Park
Aquatic Centre pool every day for a
month is the goal of aRangiora High
School student.
Ruby Beckdahl, aged 16, plans to swim
20 kilometres, or 800 laps of the 25m long
pool, in the Big Swim fundraiser for
Coastguard Tautiaki Moana.
She will be supported by her family,
including her older brother Elijah, (21),
who also plans to swim 62 kilometres,
and her friends and teachers at the high
school.
As aformer competitive swimmer and
now lifeguard/swimming instructor at
MainPower Amberley Pool, Ruby is no
stranger to churning out the kilometres
training for competitions.
She says this is the first time she has
undertaken anything so big, but believes
the Coastguard are agood community
cause to support, and she loves
swimming, plus it’s afun event to be part
of.
The Big Swim is anationwide
fundraiser for Coastguard Tautiaki
Moana.
Coastguard invited participants to get
fit, have fun and raise money to keep
Kiwis safe on the water, whatever their
waka.
Over 1200 swimmers have registered
to swim lengths of their local pools in
July as part of the national sponsored
swimming challenge, choosing five, 10 or
20 kilometre distances to swim.
Joining Ruby in the pool is fellow
Amberley lifeguard Anne Frankland
who has set 10 kilometres as her
swimming target.
The pair are using the Dudley Park
Aquatic Centre pool because the
Amberley pool is closed now for winter.
Anne says it is agood cause to support
as it helps to keep people safe as they
enjoy the waters of New Zealand.
Coastguard Tautiaki Moana’s senior
communications advisor Ben Parsons
says they are New Zealand’s primary
water safety, rescue and education
organisation.
‘‘We are the people Kiwis turn to for
help, advice or assistance. And as a
charity, we're dependent on the
generosity of people like Ruby and Anne
who are taking part in the Big Swim so
that we can continue our lifesaving
work.’’
Attitudes towards funerals, and saying
‘‘The pandemic consolidated many of
the changes happening globally to the
way people were embracing death and
funerals.
‘‘It forced us as funeral directors to
look at different ways to help our
clients.’’
He says since then, the passing of loved
ones is no longer ataboo subject to talk
about, or even plan for.
‘‘In the early days when someone died,
their church took over and things were
done and not talked about.
‘‘Today more and more people are
looking at private funerals, often putting
notices in papers after the occasion or,
having private cremations and then
Targeted rate mooted for Ashley River
19
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Atargeted rate is being considered to
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon says
he is open to an Environment
Canterbury (ECan) proposal for an
Ashley /Rakahuri River rate to protect
Rangiora.
He said it was time to consider
funding river resilience ‘‘on amore
equitable basis’’, including cofunding
from the Government.
‘‘I look forward to discussing more
with ECan what exactly is being
proposed and how that would look.
‘‘I think we can all agree that what we
have in place currently is not broad
enough to cover all of the issues and it is
timely to review.’’
There were river rating areas in place
for the upper Ashley River, but not for
the lower reaches, making it difficult for
the two councils to fund river resilience
work.
Environment Canterbury and other
regional councils have been advocating
for central Government support for
river resilience projects for several
years.
It led to the ‘Before the Deluge' report,
which was released just before Cyclone
Gabrielle struck parts of the North
Island last year.
The Government recently made
funding available as part of its new
regional infrastructure fund in Budget
2024.
Environment Canterbury acting
chairperson Craig Pauling said the
council had asked for $38 million and so
far has received $9.5 million.
The initial funding would help with
three projects, including upgrades to
Toastmasters.
Toastmasters International is anonprofit
educational organisation that
teaches public speaking and leadership
skills through aworldwide network of
clubs.
Since 1924, Toastmasters
International has helped people from
diverse backgrounds become more
confident speakers, communicators, and
leaders.
The organisation’s membership
exceeds 364,000 in more than 16,200
clubs in 145 countries. Formally
established in April 1993, the Rangiora
and Kaiapoi Toastmasters clubs are just
two of asmall number of clubs left
serving North Canterbury. The next
Toastmasters meeting on July 15, at
7.30pm, at the Prosser Quirke
Conference Room, MainPower Stadium.
‘‘We usually have one or two speeches
and table topics, an opportunity to
practice our impromptu speaking so we
are given atopic relating to the theme
selected for the night, and speak on it for
up to three minutes.
‘‘What Ilove about table topics is that
you learn so much about other people. It
is often atime for stories from people's
lives or thinking outside the square.
‘‘It can be challenging but challenge is
good,’’ she says.
Every speaker gets evaluated but it is
done in acaring way using the CRC
method commend, recommend,
commend.
So it is quite apositive evaluation and
the improvements are only
recommendations. Everyone learns
from these evaluations so it is great that
everyone hears them.
Louise says her husband also belongs
to Toastmasters.
‘‘He started because he lacked
confidence when talking to anyone in
authority at work. He has worked on his
confidence and now has had difficult
conversations with many people. ‘‘We
are all works in progress.’’
She says there are many reasons why
people attend the club. ‘‘We have people
who own businesses, people who have a
change of job, and suddenly need to
present to others for work, job
interviews, people who want to know
how to talk less and people who are
terrified of public speaking any
number of reasons.’’
critical and aged flood management
infrastructure across the region to make
it more resilient to the changing climate.
Further work on the Rangitata flood
resilience programme and projects in
South Canterbury will also be funded.
Councillor Pauling said the council’s
priority was building up the strength of
its various catchments, with many of
them not already rated.
‘‘It helps us to get on and get it sorted
and get those rivers more resilient and
communities protected.
‘‘Otherwise it will take us ageneration
to do it.’’
Atargeted rate was introduced for the
Selwyn district as part of Environment
Canterbury’s 2024/34 Long Term Plan
and now the council is looking at other
rivers, including the Ashley River.
Cr Pauling said he was hopeful of
receiving more funding, with afurther
$100 million still to be allocated.
Environment Canterbury has also
called for abraided river definition to
be included in the Government’s
legislation to replace the Resource
Management Act.
‘‘Because there hasn’t been a
definition we have had all sorts of issues
come up and it is part of our wider river
resilience work,’’ Cr Pauling said.
‘‘The current definition in the RMA is
based on ariver, but what is ariver?
‘‘Some rivers don’t move much, but
braided rivers are different and change
path alot and so there needs to be an
understanding of where the natural
system is.’’
Braided rivers were defined in the
previous Labour Government’s Natural
and Built Environments Act, which has
since been repealed by the Nationalled
Government.
Reserve plan complex
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Writing anew reserves management
plan is proving to be a‘‘complex’’
process, says Hurunui District Council
chief executive Hamish Dobbie.
The council received nearly 200
submissions during its consultation,
which coincided with the Long Term
Plan submissions process.
After two days of hearings and
deliberations last week, Mr Dobbie
said the process had been adjourned
until August 6.
‘‘There is alot of complexity in our
reserves and how they work,’’ he said.
The Reserves Management Plan was
adopted by the council in 2012, with
the review beginning last year.
The new Eastern Reserve in
Amberley, also known as the village
green, has attracted plenty of interest
among the submitters, Mr Dobbie said.
‘‘It is about setting atemplate.
‘‘It is just aparcel of land at the
moment.
‘‘There is growth in the town and
new people come in and they might
have adifferent view about how things
should operate.
‘‘Communities change.’’
Cricket is proposed to be the main
sport at the four hectare Eastern
Reserve, leaving the Amberley
Domain as the main football ground.
An area has been set aside for other
sports and it will include achildren’s
play area and apump track.
There was potential for tennis
courts, croquet and various other
sports, as well as amodest sports
pavilion, Mr Dobbie said.
Mayor Marie Black said the
development of the Eastern Reserve
was an opportunity to ‘‘bring our
community together’’.
‘‘We have an ageing demographic,
but it is not just older people.
‘‘But older love to walk across and
see little kids playing cricket.’’
Submitters noted the Amberley
Cricket Club had played cricket at the
Amberley Domain since the 1890s.
But cricket has not played there for
several years due to the overlapping
season with football.
It meant children were travelling to
Sefton and Rangiora to play cricket.
They hoped anew, developed cricket
ground in the Eastern Reserve would
revive interest in the game in the town.
Submitters also advocated for
outdoor areas for light exercise and
fellowship for the growing elderly
population.
Other submissions addressed
reserves in Cheviot, Hanmer Springs,
Glenmark, Omihi, Leithfield, Waipara
and other parts of the district.
Detours while new water line is installed
By JOHN COSGROVE
tisabusy time of the year for contractors
servicing the Waimakariri District as
many civil engineering projects are
started before the summer months
arrive.
Communications and engagement
manager at the Waimakariri District
Council, Alistair Gray, says several of the
bigger projects are already under way.
‘‘The works on the Blackett St/ Kings St
roundabout are expected to be
completed within six weeks. They are
being undertaken to install anew water
supply main to service East Rangiora.
Following this they will proceed
eastwards.’’
A375mm diameter water supply main
will be installed along Blackett Street
(from King Street to the Toy Library)
across the railway corridor and along the
full length of Keir Street to the Bellgrove
Development.”
He says anew wastewater main will be
installed between 208 King Street to 60A
Blackett Street to meet council’s level of
service requirements and facilitate the
removal of wastewater mains from
private properties.
The existing stormwater pipes at the
Blackett/King Streets intersection will
also be upgraded.
To facilitate this work the existing
roundabout has been removed and will
eventually be reconstructed once the
underground work is complete.
While the works are under way,
wastewater from properties will be
discharged into the wastewater main
installed within the roading corridor
where it is then sent to the waste water
treatment plant.
The contractors are using an open
trench method for installing the new
main, which is typical for this type of
Road closed ... The Blackett/King Streets roundabout is removed to allow stormwater
upgrade work to be undertaken.
work.
He says there are about six other water
main upgrade projects planned for
Rangiora this financial year, however
the actual timing for these is still to be
confirmed.
While the King Street and Blackett
Streets works are under way detours will
be signed posted for the surrounding
roads,
Mr Gray advises users to plan ahead
and look to use alternative northsouth
and eastwest routes through Rangiora,
Scout Den refurbishment
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The Rangiora Scout Group’s den is
getting aspruce up.
The group’s existing home was built
in 1961 with the supportand
generosity of the local community and
businesses.
But the unreinforced concrete block
structure, with awooden floor and
iron roof, needed an upgrade to meet
new building codes.
The scout group is in the process of
making the den fit for purpose with
filing of consents, and fundraising is
well under way.
The group has the approval of Scouts
New Zealand which sees Rangioraasa
progressive group, in agrowing town.
It has been based in its den in
Church Street since the group was
formed over 100 yearsago.
There is around 80 to 90 youth
members across the Keas, Cubs,
Scouts and Venturers sections which
use the den weekly.
It also has awaiting list which it says
could be reduced if new leaders or
adult helpers could be found.
Agroup spokesperson says scouting
is very rewarding, satisfying and fun.
‘‘Scouting teaches life skills and at
the same time youth members and
leaders can enjoy lots of outdoor
activities and games, in apositive
environment.
‘‘Also there is an opportunity for the
youth to work towards and earn
badges, learning new or improving on
existing skills.’’
If anyone is looking for anew,
exciting experience and is keen to join
the group, phone Greg Heaven (03) 313
Pastoralsupport benefits young employees
ANorth Canterbury processing
plant is extending its successful
pastoral support model to
benefit Hurunui’s young people.
Harris Farms General
Manager Nick Tobin says the
businesses rapid expansion
about10years ago had
established aneed for
additional workers from further
afield, including Samoa, Fiji
and the Philippines.
‘‘We set up asystem of
pastoral support to help our
migrants successfully
integrate.’’
Hurunui Council’s Chris
Sutherland, who was appointed
this year as Hurunui Mayors
Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ)
Programme Lead, immediately
saw the potential for MTFJ
placements to benefit from the
support system.
‘‘The more young people we
can attract the better,’’ says Mr
Tobin. ‘‘We encouraged Chris to
visit us and have adiscussion.’’
Hawarden’s Laura Clyma (24)
was placed at Harris Farms
three months ago, working in
the packing room.
Her success paved the way for
Horton McKay (18) from
Amberley to start amonth ago.
‘‘Moving into an affordable
rental in the township, it’s a
secure way for ayoung person to
start outindependently,’’ says
HurunuiDistrict Mayor Marie
Black.
‘‘The support from the MTFJ
programme, which is acrucial
part of helping our young
people, alongside Harris Farms
pastoral support, offers wraparound
support for young
‘‘They’re setting up their own
says.
‘‘It’s providing support with a
high level of accountability, and
Operating from its factory in
hectares of sheep and beef
farms, and both wholesale and
retail components.
It employs around 60 staff.
Last month the business won
the Foodstuffs South Island
Fresh Partnership Award for
2024 in recognition of its
achievement distributing
directly to Foodstuffs South
Island stores.
‘‘The company’s success
provides opportunities for
young people wanting to take
that first step into acareer,’’ Mr
Tobin says.
‘‘There’s plenty of scope in the
business to try different things.
We want to give young people
the opportunities —ifwesee
potential, we will make it work.’’
Horton started his first day in
the yards, but quickly realised
his strengths lay in adifferent
direction.
After adiscussion with
Operations Coordinator
Bridget Galbraith, he moved to
the boning room, with the
opportunity to start abutchers
apprenticeship.
He and Laura agree the
opportunity to be able to work
within the district is abig win.
‘‘This is my first fulltime
position,’’ Horton says.
Laura relishes being close to
family, and being exposed to all
sides of the business. ‘‘It’s an
opportunity to be in the
workforce.’’
Young farmer studying hard for YFC finals
There’snot enough minutes in the day for aCanterbury dairy farmer who’s packing
in homework for the Young Farmer of the Year final, on top of his job, writes Tim
Cronshaw.
Early morning starts don’t faze
Charing Cross dairy farmer
George Dodson.
Getting up before the sun rises
is part of the job and he finds it
relatively easy to get his head off
the pillow when the alarm rings.
The 22yearold is secondincharge
for owner operators
Andrew and Hayley Slaterat
their 430cow farm on 113
hectares halfway between
Canterbury’s Dunsandeland
Darfield.
‘‘The early starts aren’t too bad
and I’m pretty used to it now.
‘‘I’m not one of those people
that needs ahelluva lot of sleep.
‘‘I suppose if you are one of
those people who needed that,
it’s not well suited for you,but
I’ve just got used to it.’’
As for the double daily grind of
milking, he’s at peace with that
too.
‘‘You just sort of zone out and
daydream and listen to music
with abit of singing and you’ll be
right.
‘‘The more you focus the
harder it gets Isuppose.’’
Through the milking season
he’s up at 4am and out the door
getting the cows to the milkshed
with the cups on at 5am.
Milking followed by the
cleanup is usuallyfinished by
7.30am at the 36bale rotary shed
with cup removers, auto drafting,
feeding and cow manager tags.
Milking wound up for the
season on May 30 and, again in
theory, this is typically the quiet
stage of the season when the busy
rush of dairyingslows down.
Except the Tasman finalist for
the Young Farmer of the Year
grandfinal in Hamilton from
today until Saturday, July 1113,
has had his nose buried deep in
book work preparing for the
event.
‘‘Normally it would be quiet,
but I’m doing alot of studying and
work is almost the relaxing part.’’
This was his second crack in
the regional final, finishing
fourth in2022 and last year
missing out in the final cutfor the
Southland regional competition.
He’s one of seven finalists after
being somewhat taken aback to
surface ahead of a22strong field.
Now he’supagainst asmaller,
but arguably sharper,lineup
who are all older than him with
the exception of another 22yearold.
People tell him he has an old
head on his shoulders. Being
fairly young totake on leadership
—and more older opponents in
the competitive arena —doesn’t
deter him.
Undaunted, he’s taking a
pragmatic approach to the
challenge and leavingnostone
unturnedinhis preparation.
That’sincluded working on his
knowledge of sheep farming —
perceivedasamain weakness —
and brushingupon his
homework for seeds, fertiliser
and plants.
Trusted experts in forestry
George Dodson
‘‘There’s acouple of sheep
farmers around the area so I’ve
done abit of shearing and
crutching with them, Just enough
to get the wool off the sheep, but
it’s not that pretty. That’s
probably my main focus and
there’s alot more stuff to do with
business that I’ve had to learn.’’
Part of making the final was
completing atimeconsuming
3000wordinnovationproject
that was handed in afew weeks
ago, under ascenario of
inheriting afarm from parents
and having to pay out siblings.
That’s involved putting
together an investment plan,
which he believes will come in
useful later when he tries to get
onafarm, set budgets and
possibly bring in outside
investors.
His prep work for the
Canterbury/North Otago dairy
manager of the year competition,
where he finished runnerup,
might also be invaluable.
Research which included new
freshwater management policies
will hopefully come to play out in
his favour.
In the past he’s had agood
measure of success in the Dairy
Industry Awards, finishing third
in the Canterbury/North Otago,
dairy trainee of the year contest
in 2022, of which North
Canterbury is part of, and
runnerup for Otago/Southland
dairy manager of the year last
year.
‘‘It’s an aggravating one to tick
off my list after two seconds in a
row so Ihaven’t quite cracked the
nationals yet and you have to get
first to do that. That’s one to do,
but if I’m going to be owning my
own business next year this is my
last crack this year and it will
certainly be on the watchlist. I
will have acouple of months to
calve and mate and then recover
and get back into it again.’’
Already, he’s overachieved on
his goal in the Young Farmer of
the Year competition —making a
national final before ‘‘ageing out’’
at 31 years old.
His strength in the Tasman
final was agrisports, but he was
consistently in the top three for
most of the events to find him
top of the leaderboard before
the quiz.
Finishing second in the rapidfire
quiz, he’s brought his
QUALITY FENCING
BUILT TOYOUR BUDGET!
parents in again to sharpen his
buzzer skills.
‘‘I’ve certainly done alot of
buzzer practise. We try to have
one here every week because
we’ve got practise buzzers in the
region. Ihave afew mates
around and afew beers and
Fred Dodson, his dad is the quiz
master.
‘‘He loves it as well and
competed in the grand final in
2000 and my uncle has won it as
well. Dad was down in
Southland and his older brother
was in Marlborough and won it
for Tasman. So no pressure.’’
The quiz master makes sure
the questions come thick and
fast and having his mates
around makes it fun, as so much
of the prep work he has to do
himself.
There will still be nerves to
overcome competing in front of
alarge crowd.
His plan is to ignore the
outside distractions and put all
his focus on what he’s doing.
He travelled to Waikato in
April to try to learn more about
the region, and visit kiwifruit,
blueberry and avocado orchards
in the hope some of this
material will surface during the
competition.
This was followed by areturn
visit in apromotions event at
Mystery Creek’s Fieldays where
he met the other finalists after
eyeing up the competition at a
photo shoot in Christchurch in
May.
‘‘People keep telling you, even
if you don’t win it’s prettyunreal
to even get there and so many
people try and don’t make it.
Native corridor planbegins to
take shape for pupils at RHS
By SHELLEY TOPP
Atrapping programme from Rangiora
High School to the AshleyRakahuri
Regional Park, is helping create a
native tree corridor.
It is acollaboration between Pest
Free Waimakariri, the school, and
Comcol North Canterbury.
The ambitious, longterm goal once
the tree corridor has been established
along East Belt, says school’s
technology teacher David Woodstock,
is for the high school and college to
supportthe AshleyRakahuri
Rivercare Group to grow the trapped
area south through Rangiora.
‘‘Additionally, we could support
trapping activities around Matawai
Park and Northbrook Wetlands,’’ he
says.
‘‘We intend to engage with our
neighbours, offering traps in
exchange for monitoring and
maintenance of those traps.’’
The first traps, which have been
made at RangioraHigh School by one
of David’s Year 9technology groups,
were laid on the school grounds last
Friday.
The trapping programme is avital
component to the tree corridor project
❛Hedgehogs are aspecific
pest in our district due to their
predation on ground nesting
eggs and chicks, particularly
around our braided rivers.❜
—RHS technology teacher David Woodstock
because it will improve biodiversity
which will help ensure the survival of
the expected increase in native birds
to the area.
‘‘We started by using tracking
tunnels placed around the high school
property in an effort to establish
which pests we have on site,’’ David
says.
This identified mice, and afew rats
but far more hedgehogs.
‘‘Hedgehogs are aspecific pest in
our district due to their predation on
ground nesting eggs and chicks,
particularly around our braided
rivers,’’ he says.
‘‘They also eat our native reptiles;
geckos and skinks.’’
Consequently David and his pupils
have designed and made traps
suitable for eliminating hedgehogs,
using aDepartment of Conservation
150 trap mechanism.
Next term they will focus on making
smaller traps to catch mice and rats.
Across the road from the school, at
Comcol North Canterbury, tutor Eru
Metcalfe has been preparing for the
planting programme needed to create
the native tree corridor by growing
trees in the college’s Living
Laboratory Native Nursery.
He has also been collecting
superfluous native trees, saplings and
seedlings donated by community
members from private gardens to add
to his collection.
Arisk assessment is done on each
plant to make sure it is healthy, before
it is added to the Living Laboratory
collection.
It is estimated 10,000 trees will be
needed for the native tree corridor
which will require community support
to succeed.
Anyone who can help support the
tree corridor initiative, by allowing a
rodent trap to be placed on their
property, or by donating healthy
native trees, saplings and/or
seedlings, can contact Eru at Comcol
Ohoka,Hurunui in battle for semi-final spot
33
RUGBY
Collated BY PETER WILLIAMS
The most significant result last
Saturday in the North
Canterbury senior rugby
competition was Hurunui’s
victory over Ohoka.
While it still leaves Hurunui
two points behind Ohoka with
just one Saturday of roundrobin
play remaining, Ohoka
has to front in ahome game
against high flyers Glenmark
Cheviot this Saturday, while
Hurunuitravels to Loburn and
will probably have to beat
Ashley if it is to make the semifinals.
Points with just one round
remaining are: Glenmark
Cheviot 29, Kaiapoi 24, Ashley
20, Ohoka 18, Hurunui 16,
Oxford 15, Woodend 1, Saracens
0.
Hurunui vOhoka
After a20minute tussle for
control, Hurunui opened the
scoring with aDigby Heard
penalty.
Ohoka quickly equalised,
before centre Scott Allin scored
an easy try under the posts,
giving his side a133 lead.
Hurunui managed to get the ball
into space often, but Ohoka’s
pressure successfully slowed
any momentum, allowing its
cover defence to clean up.
Hurunui finally unlocked that
defence three minutes before
halftime, with apick and go try
to Cale Dobby.
Hurunui got itself back in
front 10 minutes into the second
half, when Gus Waghorn
snapped up an opportunity off
loose lineout ball to dive over
and score. He was involved
again moments later, grabbing a
turnover penalty which
Hurunui kicked for touch. It
drove the lineout towards the
posts, shortening the defence up
the middle, with Jono Schwass
then cutting back to the right
and toeing apinpoint grubber
through to put winger, Andrew
Murdoch, over in the corner.
Trailing by 14 points with 8
minutes to go, amidfield cut out
pass allowed Taylor Direen to
pierce the line, setting Ohoka up
five metres out. Its forwards
jibed for another eight phases
before quick ball to prop Connor
MacKinnon, delivered the blow.
As the intensity of the game rose
in the final stages, Hurunui
managed to hold on when
replacement flanker Ryan
Nesbit won abreak down
penalty.
Hurunui 27 (Cale Dobby, Gus
Waghorn, Andrew Murdoch,
Ben Funnell tries, Logan Topp 2
conversions, Digby Heard
penalty) beat Ohoka 20 (Connor
MacKinnon try, Scott Allin, try, 2
conversions, 2penalties).
GlenmarkCheviot vAshley
GlenmarkCheviot started very
well against agood Ashley side
with Nick Hyde and Andrew
Zuppicich crossing inside five
minutes to get the home side off
to an early lead.Ashley fought
back with awell worked try to its
fullback Anthony Tavendale. It
was converted by sharp shooter
Korbyn Gray wresting the score
back to 127.
Nick Hyde bagged another try
on the quarter hour mark,
quickly followed by a
touchdown from Guy Jensen.
Ashley kept in touch through a
Korbyn Gray penalty. However,
GlenmarkCheviot kept the acid
on with winger James Kellow
crossing for awell worked try. It
was an impressive display from
him. He normally plays flanker
but filled in very ably on on the
wing. Credit to Ashley as it kept
fighting with James Ensor and
Jack Regan scoring.
Alate Anthony Tavendale try
was the last of the scoring for
Ashley.
The scoreline then blew out
courtesy of astrong second half
display from man of the match,
Jacob Vincent, and some well
worked tries to Ben Morris and
Will Chaffey.
GlenmarkCheviot 61 (Nick
Hyde (2), Andrew Zuppicich,
Guy Jensen, James Kellow,
Jacob Vincent, Ben Morris, Will
Chaffey tries) beat Ashley 29
(Anthony Tavendale (2) James
Ensor, Jack Regan, tries Korbyn
Gray 3conversions, 1penalty)
Oxford vWoodend
On asurface that was slippery
after morning rain, Oxford
prevailed in abattle of attrition
between two evenly matched
teams. The slippery conditions
did make the ball difficult to
handle which explains why
there were aplethora of scrums
in the match.
After 15 minutes Woodend
manoeuvred itself into a
position where it likely to score,
as its hardrunning backs
mounted an assault on the
Oxford line. One dropped pass
changed it all.
An Oxford defender gratefully
grasped the loose ball
unleashed amassive kick into
Woodend territory. Oxford’s left
wing, Harry Muir, showed a
clean pair of heels, was able to
speculate it deep into
Woodend’s red zone and then
gathered up akind bounce to
score in the left hand corner.
As if stung by this unfortunate
turn of events Woodend’s inside
backs fired out two long passes
that gave second five, Takaye
Kaito plenty of room to move.
He still had to brush off acouple
of wouldbe tacklers before
crossing wide out for afine try.
The seesaw nature of the
scoring continued when Oxford
captain, George Prain, made a
good break before offloading to
Andrew Shipston to score. Then
Woodend’s loose head prop,
Yusaku Sihara, found himself in
the clear with asolitary Oxford
defender between him and the
goalline20metres away.
The massive sidestep, at full
pace, that took him past the last
line of defence would have done
an All Black winger proud and
gladdened the heart of any prop
who saw it.
Jordy Swain’s second
conversion gave Woodend a
shortlived 1410 lead, but
Oxford got its nose in front right
on halftime when fiveeighth,
Korbyn Newman, scored.
This lead was extended soon
after the resumption when
Prain was rewarded for afine
game by scoring for Oxford what
proved to be the last points of
the match. Lock, Joseph
Lockwood was another Oxford
player to impress.
Woodend’s two tries in this
match were scored by interns of
the Panasonic Wild Knights
academy who have joined
Woodend for the second half of
this season.
It is heartening to see that
these players were pointed
towards Woodend, aclub which
had been languishing at the
bottom of the competition as
there is no doubt that
Woodend’s performances have
been lifted as aresult of having
these players join their ranks,
and the players themselves are
sure to be learning alot from
being immersed in atotally
different style of rugby to what
they experience in Japan.
Oxford 20 (Harry Muir, Andrew
Shipston, Korbyn Newman and
George Prain tries) beat
Woodend 14 (Takaye Kaito,
Yusaku Sihara tries, Jordy
Swain, 2conversions).
Saracens vKaiapoi
Kaiapoi all but locked up
second spot in the competition’s
round robin stage with a
comprehensive nine try 5814
romp over long time rival
Saracens.
The scene was set in the
opening exchange when
Kaiapoi effectively scored from
the kick off. With aconversion
that looked to be astray,
Saracens returned the
compliment by doing the same
thing from the next kick offand
after less than five minutes the
scores were locked at sevenall.
Kaiapoi’s domination was
quick to be revealed with a
scrum that began to dominate,
and it was this that laid the
foundation for their win.
Saracens held on for the first 20
minutes until Kaiapoi number
eight Sidney Coster was on hand
to score and five minutes prior
to half time, half back Leo
McConchie scooped up aloose
ball near the Saracens line to
score.
Following the half time break
and 197 lead, Kaiapoi scored
five tries in the first 20 minutes
of the second spell, often
leaving Saracens defenders outnumbered
and wrong footed in
attacks on their line. The third
of these tries was aided by a
lucky bounce which simply
rubbed more salt into Saracens’
season long wounds.
In the final quarter, Saracens
kept Kaiapoi scoreless until
right on full time, but not before
it cored its second try after a
rare raid into the Kaiapoi 22.
This was awarded to Alex
Kennedy who was playing his
first game of the season.
The Kaiapoi effort was led by
half back McConchie who
dictated terms behind the
dominant pack, and Crusaders’
squad member Brodie
McAllister who was the anchor
figure in the front row. The
inside back combination of
Lance Taylor and Taine Jacobs
Lawson regularly opened gaps
in Saracens’ defence.
Nathan Goodwin put in an
aggressive eighty minutes for
Saracens and Hadrian Jackson
made the most of the limited
opportunities he received. The
longer the game went the more
Kennedy at number eight got
himself into the action.
Kaiapoi 55 (Sidney Coster (2),
Leo McConchie (2), Shak Bassi,
David Cook, Lance Taylor tries.
Taine JacobsLawson 2tries, 5
conversions) beat Saracens 14
(Hadrian Jackson, Alex
Kennedy tries. Oscar Burney 2
con).
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
More people are taking the bus,
as the cost of living crisis
continues to bite.
Environment Canterbury says
it has seen asignificant increase
in bus patronage since it
introduced its $2 and $1 fares
trial last year, particularly in
Waimakariri and Selwyn.
Passenger numbers were now
above preCovid levels and close
to levels before the 2010 and 2011
earthquakes, acting chairperson
Craig Pauling said.
The regional council launched
the twoyear flat fares trial, of a
$2 standard fare and $1 for
students, children and
community service card holders,
on July 1last year.
Whether the trial will be
continued will depend on
funding from Waka Kotahi New
Zealand Transport Agency.
Cr Pauling said the council
planned to continue the trial
until June 30 next year, but could
review it once it knew what
funding was available.
Plans to increase the
frequency for route 7
(Queenspark) had been delayed
from July 1toJanuary, while
reviews of other routes were on
hold.
‘‘We have put our money in, but
now we have to wait to see what
funding we will get,’’ Cr Pauling
said.
‘‘If we need to reconsult then
❛People really value the
express buses (from
Rangiora and Kaiapoi to
the city) and I
understand they are
being well used.❜
—Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon
wewill. We weren’t going to
preempt it (Waka Kotahi’s
funding) by not funding it
ourselves.’’
Cr Pauling said he had raised
with Infrastructure Minister
Chris Bishop the possibility of
the regional council obtaining a
share of development
contributions to fund transport
planning.
‘‘The regional council needs to
be included because when there
is anew subdivision it may need
to have public transport and we
can’t just turn it on if we don’t
have the funding.’’
He said the council will also
look to protect apotential route
for the proposed mass rapid
transport (MRT) by designating
the land.
‘‘We want to see MRT and
public transport in general
sorted because it is critical to
how Greater Christchurch is
going to go forward.
‘‘As we grow to 700,000 people
over the next 30 years and then to
one million over the next 50 years
NC SPORTS RESULTS
weneed to have that in place.’’
Bus user and Waimakariri
Mayor Dan Gordon said it was
‘‘pleasing’’ to see bus patronage
improve across the region.
‘‘I don’t use it as often as I
would like, but having used it
extensively overseas Irecognise
the benefits of agood public
transport service and we are
keen to see improvements.
‘‘People really value the
express buses (from Rangiora
and Kaiapoi to the city) and I
understand they are being well
used.’’
Mr Gordon said his council had
submitted to Environment
Canterbury on extending
services in the Waimakariri
district to include the Rangiora
western bypass route and local
suburbs.
He would like to see amini bus
service, similar to Timaru’s
MyWay service, introduced in
Waimakariri.
‘‘But there is aconsequence,
which is the impact on
ratepayers and it relies on the
Government subsidy to keep it
functioning.’’
