Volunteers step up
to build picnic tables
FOUR NEW picnic tables are being
installed at McCormacks Bay and
Charlesworth reserves after coordination
between community groups.
The Ferrymead Rotary Club funded the
tables which were built by Linwood Menz
Shed volunteers.
“The generosity of the Ferrymead
Rotary Club will allow locals to sit down
and enjoy the stunning environment that
these two reserves have to offer,” said
Avon-Heathcote Estuary Trust manager
Tanya Jenkins.
The trust approached the Menz Shed
about designing the tables after being
offered funding by the Rotary club.
The handy volunteers, part of the
Linwood Resource Centre, were happy
to support the initiative and fulfil
instructions to create sturdy tables, said
Jenkins.
“The project has provided the
opportunity for local men to share and
pass on knowledge of woodworking to
others,” said Charlie Hulbert, Linwood
Menz Shed community development
co-ordinator.
Two of the tables are now available for
use at McCormack’s Bay Reserve.
“Trust volunteers have spent eight
years here on a regular basis to plant,
weed, water, and mulch several thousand
seedlings for people and wildlife to enjoy
and it is certainly worth a look,” said
Jenkins.
The other two will be placed in
Charlesworth Reserve soon.
Each table is secured to a concrete base
and milled from macrocarpa wood with a
thick top and seating.
They have been crafted to be durable in
the salty environment.
