Volunteer coastguard’s
big swim to give back
• By Dylan Smits
ANDREW SOUTHEN
is making a splash for
Coastguard New Zealand
funding by swimming 50km
this month.
The volunteer coastguard
is raising funds for the
organisation after joining 18
months ago.
“I’m into boating and
anything to do with water and
the sea. I thought it was good
to put something back into the
community,” he said.
The Big Swim is a fundraiser
for Coastguard NZ where
participants get sponsored for
swimming a distance of their
choice during July.
Southen hopes the challenge
will prepare him for the South
Island masters short course
championships next month at
Jellie Park.
He will compete in the 100m
individual medley, 50m and
100m freestyle, and 50m, 100m
and 200m backstroke.
The 64-year-old swims with
the Jasi Masters Swim Club and
has already completed 30.2km
of the challenge.
“The most I’ve probably done
before is 30km in a month. It
is a bit of an effort, but I’m just
enjoying the challenge so that
gives you a bit of incentive to
carry on,” said Southen.
Playground
plans get a
rethink
following
petition
• By Geoff Sloan
PUBLIC PRESSURE has forced
the city council to take another
look at its replacement plans
for a popular Eastern suburbs
playground.
Earlier this year, council
officials revealed Thomson Park’s
50-year-old fort playground
would be demolished due to safety
concerns.
Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community Board
member Alex Hewison said it was
a safety risk.
“And for us elected members,
our priority is ensuring that our
community is safe. What was
disappointing was the redesign.”
The council proposed replacing
the largely wooden facility with
an imported, $80,000 modular
kitset funded by the city council’s
‘community parks play item
renewal’ project.
Those plans led to a community
backlash. Residents were angry
about the lack of consultation,
slamming the replacement model
as “too plastic”, with its smaller
size making it only suitable for
small children.
Hewison launched a petition
calling on city council staff to
consider a more suitable likefor-like
replacement. He said
media attention had significantly
boosted the reach of the petition.
Landfill gets extension
OPERATIONS will continue
on part of the Burwood landfill
until 2026.
The 9.62 ha section of the
Burwood Resource Recovery
Park was expected to close when
its resource consent expired on
June 30.
But a two-year extension
for operations at site C has
been granted by Environment
Canterbury.
Said city
council resource
recovery manager
Dr Alec
McNeil: “We had
anticipated we’d
need to close site
C by 2024 when
it was expected
to have reached
capacity, but soil
Alec
McNeil
volumes delivered to the site have
been lower than predicted, so
there’s enough room for another
two years of operation.”
McNeil said there are no
other soil disposal sites in the
Christchurch area that could fill
the gap in the market.
“Continuing operations here
means we don’t need to travel
outside of Christchurch to other
disposal sites, which cuts costly
transport distances and provides
time for the industry to open
new landfill sites.”
The Burwood Resource
Recovery Park was established
by Transwaste Canterbury to
another two years after a resource consent extension was
granted.
process earthquake waste from
the city’s demolished buildings.
Since 2019, Burwood landfill
has been progressively closing,
with only site C remaining
open.
The small section of the landfill
is used to dispose of soils that
contain low levels of contaminants.
No hazardous material is
accepted.
“Continuing at site C until
it reaches capacity is the best
and most economical option,”
McNeil said.
“I want to assure local residents
that apart from the change to the
resource consent, all operations
will remain the same and will
not involve any new excavations
or an increase in size – we’re
adding material to the existing
site area.”
The city council will not be
seeking a further extension when
the consent expires in June 2026.
Once closed, the site will
be incorporated into the
neighbouring Bottle Lake Forest
Park.
Playground gets
$20,000 boost
• From page 1
The strong community
response has seen a partial
backdown from the city council.
It is now adding an extra
$20,000 out of existing budgets
to bolster the project.
“There’s a significantly larger
footprint. There’s a tunnel,
unfortunately there isn’t that big
double slide because once again
that would require additional
funding and we’re really proud
to have kept that within existing
budgets to ensure that our
community have a bigger and
playground without breaking
the bank,” Hewison (above)
said.
He believes the public will be
happier with the new upgrade.
“I think anything is better
than the original design.”
Hewison said the new design
will allow more play elements to
be added on in future, subject to
funding.
The change in plans will result
in a delay, but he hopes the new
expanded playground will be
up and running for the area’s
children by the end of the year.
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Volunteers step up
to build picnic tables
FOUR NEW picnic tables are being
installed at McCormacks Bay and
Charlesworth reserves after coordination
between community groups.
The Ferrymead Rotary Club funded the
tables which were built by Linwood Menz
Shed volunteers.
“The generosity of the Ferrymead
Rotary Club will allow locals to sit down
and enjoy the stunning environment that
these two reserves have to offer,” said
Avon-Heathcote Estuary Trust manager
Tanya Jenkins.
The trust approached the Menz Shed
about designing the tables after being
offered funding by the Rotary club.
The handy volunteers, part of the
Linwood Resource Centre, were happy
to support the initiative and fulfil
instructions to create sturdy tables, said
Jenkins.
“The project has provided the
opportunity for local men to share and
pass on knowledge of woodworking to
others,” said Charlie Hulbert, Linwood
Menz Shed community development
co-ordinator.
Two of the tables are now available for
use at McCormack’s Bay Reserve.
“Trust volunteers have spent eight
years here on a regular basis to plant,
weed, water, and mulch several thousand
seedlings for people and wildlife to enjoy
and it is certainly worth a look,” said
Jenkins.
The other two will be placed in
Charlesworth Reserve soon.
Each table is secured to a concrete base
and milled from macrocarpa wood with a
thick top and seating.
They have been crafted to be durable in
the salty environment.
Community comes together for icy dip
• By Dylan Smits
A CHILLING plunge and
community connection brought
more than 100 people together for
the seventh annual mid-winter
swim at Scarborough Beach on
Sunday.
Now part of the Scarborough
Dipper’s Wet July event, the swim
brings attention to the fundraising
initiative for a new defibrillator at
Taylors Mistake and the Sumner
based mental health initiative Surf
Ora.
Organiser Julie Zarifeh started
the swim to remember her
husband, Paul, and son Sam, who
both passed away within weeks of
each other in 2017.
Paul Zarifeh, died in November
2017 after a battle with pancreatic
cancer and 27-year-old Sam
drowned while on a rafting trip 16
days later.
After their chilly dip, participants
were treated to a sausage sizzle.
“People were exhilarated,
buzzing, proud of themselves,
and loved the whole vibe and
connection aspect,” said Zarifeh.
Fancy dress was encouraged
this year to encourage a “fun and
frisky” community event.
Participants are tasked to take
a dip in the sea every morning for
the entire month of July.
Scarborough Dippers bank
account at 01-0811-0814833-
SPLASH: More than 100 people turned out for the mid-winter swim at Scarborough Beach on Sunday. The community
Ease Those Aching Joints at Kōwhai Vet
Caring for Dogs with Arthritis
At Kōwhai Vet, we understand how much your furry friend
means to you. Seeing them struggle with arthritis can be heartwrenching,
but with the right care and adjustments, we can
help make their life more comfortable and enjoyable. Here’s a
guide to understanding and managing arthritis in dogs.
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is like the wear and tear we humans
experience in our joints as we age. It’s a condition where the
protective cartilage in a dog’s joints wears down over time,
leading to pain and stiffness. This is particularly common in
older dogs and certain breeds that are more prone to joint
issues.
Diagnosing Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is diagnosed through a combination of signs
that you may notice at home about your pet’s reduced
mobility, physical examination and x-rays. When you bring
your dog to Kōwhai Vet, our vets will perform a gentle and
thorough physical exam. We’ll check for signs like swelling,
reduced range of motion, and any discomfort your dog might
feel when we touch their joints. We’ll also watch how they walk
and move around. To get a clearer picture, we might suggest
taking some x-rays. These images help us see the inside of
Normal Hips
Severe arthritis in hips
The hips are a common joint for the
development of osteoarthritis
your dog’s joints and check for signs of osteoarthritis like
bone spurs or narrowed joint spaces. It also helps us to rule
out other possible causes of the pain such as bone tumours.
Sometimes, we might recommend more detailed imaging, but
x-rays are usually a great start.
Medical Treatments for Pain Relief Managing
your dog’s pain is our top priority.
Here are some common treatments we might recommend:
• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): NSAIDs
are a staple for reducing inflammation and pain in dogs
with arthritis. Medications like carprofen, meloxicam,
and deracoxib can make a big difference. Of course, we’ll
monitor your dog closely to avoid any side effects.
• Beransa: We’re
excited about Beransa
(bedinvetmab), a newer
treatment that’s been
helping many dogs. It’s
a monthly injection that
targets and neutralises a
protein involved in pain
signalling, providing
significant relief and
improving mobility.
Supportive Treatments
Alongside medications, there are several other ways we can
support your dog’s joint health:
• Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These supplements, found in fish
oil, can help reduce inflammation. We’ll guide you on how
to incorporate them into your dog’s diet safely.
• Weight Management: Keeping your dog at a healthy
weight is crucial. Extra pounds put more strain on their
joints, so we’ll work with you to develop a balanced diet
and exercise plan.
• Physical Therapy: Just like humans, dogs benefit from
physical therapy. Tailored exercises and stretches
can improve joint function and muscle strength.
Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is especially gentle on
joints and very effective.
Making Your Home Comfortable
Small changes at home can make a big difference for a dog
with arthritis:
• Non-Slip Mats: Adding non-slip mats or rugs on slippery
floors can help your dog move around more confidently
without the fear of slipping.
• Orthopaedic Dog Beds: Invest in a good orthopaedic
dog bed. These beds provide excellent support and
cushioning, helping your dog rest comfortably.
• Ramps: Using ramps instead of stairs helps your dog
avoid the strain of jumping or climbing. This is great for
getting in and out of cars or navigating steps.
• Raised Food and Water Bowls: Elevate your dog’s food
and water bowls. This simple change means they don’t
have to bend down as much, reducing strain on their neck
and joints.
• Slings or Harnesses: For dogs with severe mobility issues,
a sling or harness can be very helpful. It allows you to
support your dog and help them move around without
putting extra pressure on their joints.
At Kōwhai Vet Clinic, we’re here to support you and your
dog through every stage of their arthritis journey. By
combining medical treatments, supportive therapies, and
a few home adjustments, we can help your furry friend live
a comfortable and happy life. If you have any questions or
need personalised advice, please don’t hesitate to reach out
to us. Together, we can make a world of difference for your
beloved pet.
For any specific treatments and recommendations tailored
to your dog’s condition, please consult with us at Kōwhai
Vet Clinic. We’re always here to help.
MG4 X-Power potent but lacking polish
THE X-POWER is the wild child
hot EV hatch in the MG4 range
that has a bit of larrikin thrown
into the mix, adding intrigue
and excitement to its multidimensional
personality.
The adrenalin charged,
X-Power is easily the fastest and
most potent production MG ever.
It is capable of knocking out the
0-100km/h dash in a vivid 3.8
seconds, boasting dual-motor
power of 320kW and 600Nm of
torque all for $69,990.
It’s a performance car steal even
in a post Clean Car Discount
world. Nine months ago it would
have attracted a healthy $7015
rebate, meaning you could have
driven away in this barnstormer
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
for an absurdly cheap $62,975.
Specification enhancements
include orange brake calipers, a
two-tone black roof, 18-inch alloy
wheels and polished trim accents,
and an exclusive attention
grabbing new Hunter Green
colour option that the test vehicle
sported.
Not only is this compact fivedoor
hatch quick, it’s also a fast
charger capable of recharging at
up to 140kW, in a charge time of
only 26 minutes from 10-80 per
cent using a 150kW DC rapid
charger.
The X-Power is equipped
with an all-new dual motor
configuration delivering up to
320 action packed kilowatts of
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Styling 7; Value
for money 9; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
peak performance to all four
wheels, via front (150kW) and
rear (170kW) electric motors.
Its accelerative powers are
remarkable with throttle
response both breathtaking and
instant.
Tyre rumble, especially on
coarse road surfaces, becomes
especially niggly on longer trips.
Apart from this irritation, it’s
smooth and silent around town,
ticking even more boxes for an
already appealing vehicle.
The claimed 450km plus allelectric
driving range shrinks
rapidly if you binge on the
X-Power’s addictive performance.
A modern and thoughtfully
designed cabin is well
put together but given its
performance hero status in the
MG family, the interior doesn’t
have the expected X-factor.
On the outside, the generic EV
styling looks far too much like its
mainstream siblings. A bit more
X-factor wouldn’t go amiss here
either.
The X-Power has almost every
technology base is covered.
I especially liked the clever
dual-screen technology with
configurable driver display,
featuring a floating infotainment
screen, and an audio system with
Apple Car Play and Android
Auto.
A rotary dial gear selector is
intuitive and easy to use, while
getting to where you want to
go is made easy with satellite
navigation.
The MG Pilot system makes
a compelling safety statement
off the back of a comprehensive
package of standard safety kit.
The test car felt super solid,
agile and stable on the road and
body roll is superbly contained
under brisk cornering.
Direct and well-weighted
steering with just the right
balance of road feel, rounds
things out nicely. However, as
an overall ride and handling
package it falls short of the best
hyper hot hatches, although you
have to cut the X-Power a little
slack as most of are priced well
north of this one.
Even making those allowances,
more finessing is required to take
some of the edge off the hard
low-speed ride. Another work-on
is dialling back the suspension
noise that’s fairly strident over
more demanding patchwork and
potholed road surfaces that ask
the hard questions of a vehicle’s
suspension.
