Volunteer coastguard’s 

big swim to give back

is making a splash for 

Coastguard New Zealand 

funding by swimming 50km 

this month. 

The volunteer coastguard 

is raising funds for the 

organisation after joining 18 

months ago. 

“I’m into boating and 

anything to do with water and 

the sea. I thought it was good 

to put something back into the 

community,” he said. 

The Big Swim is a fundraiser 

for Coastguard NZ where 

participants get sponsored for 

swimming a distance of their 

choice during July. 

Southen hopes the challenge 

will prepare him for the South 

Island masters short course 

championships next month at 

Jellie Park. 

He will compete in the 100m 

individual medley, 50m and 

100m freestyle, and 50m, 100m 

and 200m backstroke. 

The 64-year-old swims with 

the Jasi Masters Swim Club and 

has already completed 30.2km 

of the challenge. 

“The most I’ve probably done 

before is 30km in a month. It 

is a bit of an effort, but I’m just 

enjoying the challenge so that 

gives you a bit of incentive to 

carry on,” said Southen.

rethink

PUBLIC PRESSURE has forced 

the city council to take another 

look at its replacement plans 

for a popular Eastern suburbs 

playground. 

Earlier this year, council 

officials revealed Thomson Park’s 

50-year-old fort playground 

would be demolished due to safety 

concerns. 

Waitai Coastal-Burwood- 

Linwood Community Board 

member Alex Hewison said it was 

a safety risk. 

“And for us elected members, 

our priority is ensuring that our 

community is safe. What was 

disappointing was the redesign.” 

The council proposed replacing 

the largely wooden facility with 

an imported, $80,000 modular 

kitset funded by the city council’s 

‘community parks play item 

renewal’ project. 

Those plans led to a community 

backlash. Residents were angry 

about the lack of consultation, 

slamming the replacement model 

as “too plastic”, with its smaller 

size making it only suitable for 

small children. 

Hewison launched a petition 

calling on city council staff to 

consider a more suitable likefor-like 

replacement. He said 

media attention had significantly 

boosted the reach of the petition.

Landfill gets extension

The 9.62 ha section of the 

Burwood Resource Recovery 

Park was expected to close when 

its resource consent expired on 

June 30. 

But a two-year extension 

for operations at site C has 

been granted by Environment 

Canterbury.

disposal sites, which cuts costly 

transport distances and provides 

time for the industry to open 

new landfill sites.”

Recovery Park was established 

by Transwaste Canterbury to 

SITE C: Operations at Burwood landfill will continue for 

another two years after a resource consent extension was 

granted.

The small section of the landfill 

is used to dispose of soils that

and most economical option,” 

McNeil said. 

“I want to assure local residents 

that apart from the change to the 

resource consent, all operations 

will remain the same and will 

not involve any new excavations 

or an increase in size – we’re 

adding material to the existing 

site area.” 

The city council will not be 

seeking a further extension when 

the consent expires in June 2026. 

Once closed, the site will 

be incorporated into the 

neighbouring Bottle Lake Forest 

Park.

He moved to Lyttelton two years ago. 

After reducing his workload in his plumbing 

company, Isovalve Ltd, he decided to 

join Coastguard Canterbury. 

“I’m teeing up something to spend my 

time with in retirement,” he said. 

Southen has raised $350 of his $750 goal 

so far and hopes to surpass it. 

He is also training fortnightly to become 

part of the coastguard’s operational crew 

and aims to be qualified to go on rescues 

in six months. 

“I’m looking forward to getting called 

out. Might be incidents where you get 


dragged out of your living room, but that’s 

part of it,” he said.

Volunteers step up 

to build picnic tables 

FOUR NEW picnic tables are being 

installed at McCormacks Bay and 

Charlesworth reserves after coordination 

between community groups. 

The Ferrymead Rotary Club funded the 

tables which were built by Linwood Menz 

Shed volunteers. 

“The generosity of the Ferrymead 

Rotary Club will allow locals to sit down 

and enjoy the stunning environment that 

these two reserves have to offer,” said 

Avon-Heathcote Estuary Trust manager 

Tanya Jenkins. 

The trust approached the Menz Shed 

about designing the tables after being 

offered funding by the Rotary club. 

The handy volunteers, part of the 

Linwood Resource Centre, were happy 

to support the initiative and fulfil 

instructions to create sturdy tables, said 

Jenkins. 

“The project has provided the 

opportunity for local men to share and 

pass on knowledge of woodworking to 

others,” said Charlie Hulbert, Linwood 

Menz Shed community development 

co-ordinator. 

Two of the tables are now available for 

use at McCormack’s Bay Reserve. 

“Trust volunteers have spent eight 

years here on a regular basis to plant, 

weed, water, and mulch several thousand 

seedlings for people and wildlife to enjoy 

and it is certainly worth a look,” said 

Jenkins. 

The other two will be placed in 

Charlesworth Reserve soon. 

Each table is secured to a concrete base 

and milled from macrocarpa wood with a 

thick top and seating. 

They have been crafted to be durable in 

the salty environment.

Community comes together for icy dip

A CHILLING plunge and 

community connection brought 

more than 100 people together for 

the seventh annual mid-winter 

swim at Scarborough Beach on 

Sunday. 

Now part of the Scarborough 

Dipper’s Wet July event, the swim 

brings attention to the fundraising 

initiative for a new defibrillator at 

Taylors Mistake and the Sumner 

based mental health initiative Surf 

Ora. 

Organiser Julie Zarifeh started 

the swim to remember her 

husband, Paul, and son Sam, who 

both passed away within weeks of 

each other in 2017. 

Paul Zarifeh, died in November 

2017 after a battle with pancreatic 

cancer and 27-year-old Sam 

drowned while on a rafting trip 16 

days later. 

After their chilly dip, participants 

were treated to a sausage sizzle. 

“People were exhilarated, 

buzzing, proud of themselves, 

and loved the whole vibe and 

connection aspect,” said Zarifeh. 

Fancy dress was encouraged 

this year to encourage a “fun and 

frisky” community event. 

Participants are tasked to take 

a dip in the sea every morning for 

the entire month of July.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is like the wear and tear we humans 

experience in our joints as we age. It’s a condition where the 

protective cartilage in a dog’s joints wears down over time, 

leading to pain and stiffness. This is particularly common in 

older dogs and certain breeds that are more prone to joint 

issues. 

Diagnosing Osteoarthritis 

Osteoarthritis is diagnosed through a combination of signs 

that you may notice at home about your pet’s reduced 

mobility, physical examination and x-rays. When you bring 

your dog to Kōwhai Vet, our vets will perform a gentle and 

thorough physical exam. We’ll check for signs like swelling, 

reduced range of motion, and any discomfort your dog might 

feel when we touch their joints. We’ll also watch how they walk 

and move around. To get a clearer picture, we might suggest 

taking some x-rays. These images help us see the inside of

The hips are a common joint for the 

development of osteoarthritis 

your dog’s joints and check for signs of osteoarthritis like 

bone spurs or narrowed joint spaces. It also helps us to rule 

out other possible causes of the pain such as bone tumours. 

Sometimes, we might recommend more detailed imaging, but 

x-rays are usually a great start. 

Medical Treatments for Pain Relief Managing 

your dog’s pain is our top priority. 

Here are some common treatments we might recommend: 

• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): NSAIDs 

are a staple for reducing inflammation and pain in dogs 

with arthritis. Medications like carprofen, meloxicam, 

and deracoxib can make a big difference. Of course, we’ll 

monitor your dog closely to avoid any side effects. 

• Beransa: We’re 

excited about Beransa 

(bedinvetmab), a newer 

treatment that’s been 

helping many dogs. It’s 

a monthly injection that 

targets and neutralises a 

protein involved in pain 

signalling, providing 

significant relief and 

improving mobility. 

Supportive Treatments 

Alongside medications, there are several other ways we can 

support your dog’s joint health: 

• Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These supplements, found in fish 

oil, can help reduce inflammation. We’ll guide you on how 

to incorporate them into your dog’s diet safely. 

• Weight Management: Keeping your dog at a healthy 

weight is crucial. Extra pounds put more strain on their 

joints, so we’ll work with you to develop a balanced diet 

and exercise plan. 

• Physical Therapy: Just like humans, dogs benefit from 

physical therapy. Tailored exercises and stretches

Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is especially gentle on

On the outside, the generic EV 

styling looks far too much like its 

mainstream siblings. A bit more 

X-factor wouldn’t go amiss here 

either. 

The X-Power has almost every 

technology base is covered. 

I especially liked the clever 

dual-screen technology with 

configurable driver display, 

featuring a floating infotainment 

screen, and an audio system with 

Apple Car Play and Android 

Auto. 

A rotary dial gear selector is 

intuitive and easy to use, while 

getting to where you want to 

go is made easy with satellite 

navigation. 

The MG Pilot system makes 

a compelling safety statement 

off the back of a comprehensive 

package of standard safety kit. 

The test car felt super solid, 

agile and stable on the road and 

body roll is superbly contained 

under brisk cornering. 

Direct and well-weighted 

steering with just the right 

balance of road feel, rounds 

things out nicely. However, as 

an overall ride and handling 

package it falls short of the best 

hyper hot hatches, although you 

have to cut the X-Power a little 

slack as most of are priced well 

north of this one. 

Even making those allowances, 

more finessing is required to take 

some of the edge off the hard 

low-speed ride. Another work-on 

is dialling back the suspension 

noise that’s fairly strident over 

more demanding patchwork and 

potholed road surfaces that ask 

the hard questions of a vehicle’s 

suspension.
