New wheels
for teaching
cycle safety
SENIOR CONSTABLE Jeff
Martin has a new learning aid
to help teach kids about cycle
safety, thanks to the generosity
of a local bike shop.
For more than 20 years, the
team at Around Again Cycles
have been keeping Cantabrians
moving – repairing and
restoring second-hand bikes.
They’re passionate about all
things cycling, including safety.
When Martin approached
the team for an old bike to
use to talk to primary school
children about bike safety, they
were only too keen to help.
The team purpose-built
him a demonstration bike,
complete with working brakes
and reflector lights, but small
enough to transport easily.
“It’s so much easier to
explain the safety features of
a bike when I have a working
model,” said Martin.
“It’s compact enough that
I can take it from school to
school easily. It’s also great for
the visual learners.
“The kids always ask ‘Is that
your bike, Constable Jeff?’ It’d
take me a while to get to work if
it was!” Martin lives more than
40km from his home station.
explain safety features to pupils at Waitākiri Primary School. PHOTOS: NZ POLICE
As a school community
officer, Martin supports
the city council’s Cycle Safe
programme by talking about
cycling and law.
“The Cycle Safe team do
an amazing job. They visit
primary schools and over two
days they check the kids’ bikes
and helmets, talk about the
importance of being visible
and teach them the road rules.
“Then they go out on the
road and practise what they’ve
learned. It’s a bit like getting a
licence to ride.”
Playground
plans get a
rethink
following
petition
• By Geoff Sloan
PUBLIC PRESSURE has forced
the city council to take another
look at its plans for a replacement
playground at Thomson Park.
Earlier this year, council officials
revealed the suburb’s popular
50-year-old fort playground
would be demolished due to safety
concerns.
Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community Board
member Alex Hewison said it was
a safety risk.
“And for us elected members,
our priority is ensuring that our
community is safe. What was
disappointing was the redesign.”
The council proposed replacing
the largely wooden facility with
an imported, $80,000 modular
kitset funded by the city council’s
‘community parks play item
renewal’ project.
Those plans led to a community
backlash. Residents were angry
about the lack of consultation,
slamming the replacement model
as “too plastic”, with its smaller
size making it only suitable for
small children.
Hewison launched a petition
calling on city council staff to
consider a more suitable like-forlike
replacement.
He said media attention had
significantly boosted the reach of
the petition.
Extra two years for landfill
OPERATIONS will continue
on part of the Burwood landfill
until 2026.
The 9.62 ha section of the
Burwood Resource Recovery
Park was expected to close when
its resource consent expired on
June 30.
But a two-year extension for
operations at site C has been
granted by Environment Canterbury.
Said city
council resource
recovery manager
Dr Alec
McNeil: “We had
anticipated we’d
need to close site
C by 2024 when
it was expected
to have reached
capacity, but soil
Alec McNeil
volumes delivered to the site have
been lower than predicted, so
there’s enough room for another
two years of operation.”
McNeil said there are no
other soil disposal sites in the
Christchurch area that could fill
the gap in the market.
“Continuing operations here
means we don’t need to travel
outside of Christchurch to other
disposal sites, which cuts costly
transport distances and provides
time for the industry to open
new landfill sites.”
The Burwood Resource
Recovery Park was established
by Transwaste Canterbury to
EXTENSION: Operations at Burwood landfill will continue for another two years after a
resource consent extension was granted.
the city’s demolished buildings.
Since 2019, Burwood landfill
has been progressively closing,
with only site C remaining
open.
The small section of the landfill
is used to dispose of soils that
contain low levels of contaminants.
No hazardous material is
accepted.
“Continuing at site C until
it reaches capacity is the best
and most economical option,”
McNeil said.
“I want to assure local residents
that apart from the change
to the resource consent, all
operations will remain the same
and will not involve any new
excavations or an increase in size
– we’re adding material to the
existing site area.”
The city council will not be
seeking a further extension when
the consent expires in June 2026.
Once closed, the site will
be incorporated into the
neighbouring Bottle Lake Forest
Park.
Menz Shed
steps up for
picnic table
project
VOLUNTEERS from Linwood
Menz Shed have built four new
picnic tables which are being
installed at McCormacks Bay and
Charlesworth reserves.
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary
Trust approached the Menz Shed
about designing the tables after
being offered funding by the
Ferrymead Rotary club.
“The generosity of the Ferrymead
Rotary Club will allow locals to
sit down and enjoy the stunning
environment that these two
reserves have to offer,” said trust
manager Tanya Jenkins.
The handy Menz Shed
volunteers, part of the Linwood
Resource Centre, were happy to
support the initiative and fulfil
instructions to create sturdy tables,
said Jenkins.
“The project has provided the
opportunity for local men to
share and pass on knowledge of
woodworking to others,” said
Charlie Hulbert, Linwood Menz
Shed community development
co-ordinator.
Each table is secured to a
concrete base and milled from
macrocarpa wood with a thick top
and seating.
They have been crafted to be
durable in the salty environment.
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
advertorial
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
heat pump is installed.
Playground gets a
$20k funding boost
• From page 1
The strong community response has
seen a partial backdown from the city
council. It is now adding an extra $20,000
out of existing budgets to bolster the
project.
“There’s a significantly larger footprint.
There’s a tunnel, unfortunately there isn’t
that big double slide because once again
that would require additional funding
and we’re really proud to have kept that
within existing budgets to ensure that our
community have a bigger and playground
without breaking the bank,” Hewison said.
He believes the public will be happier
with the new upgrade.
‘bigger and better’ playground for Thomson Park. Below – the old fort
“I think anything is better than the
Hewison said the new design will allow
more play elements to be added on in
The change in plans will result in a
delay, but he hopes the new expanded
CHALLENGE: Aquagym swim club members working hard to achieve their
840km goal.
Swimmers clock up
length of South Island
• By Isabella Adams
A SWIM club challenged themselves to
swim the length of the South Island in a
week.
The Aquagym swim club ran their first
ever “aquathon” to fundraise for the club.
The goal was to swim the length of the
South Island, a total of 840km, which they
achieved through weekly training sessions
and a wrap-up event at the end of the last
month.
Club president Mike Walker said the
idea came from one of the parents.
“What we wanted to do was raise money
at the club for supporting our coaches,
getting equipment for the swimmers and
things like that.
“One of our mums said, ‘well, why don’t
we swim the length of the South Island?
And we’ll count it, we’ll do it over a week,
and we’ll count all our trainings together’.”
The Cashel St based club set a goal of
$6000 and fundraised through Givealittle.
They raised $7037.
Walker said they would run a similar
event in the future.
“The people who got behind it that I saw
and swam with seemed to have a good
time and really enjoy it.
“I think we’ll definitely do it again.”

Only have two weeks leave during the year due to Xmas closures?
Have kids at school and can only go away during school holidays?
Have precious pets that you cannot leave for long? OR simply don’t like to fly far?
We are often faced with the above scenarios and sometimes it can be hard to
come up with some new and exciting ideas about where to go for your holiday….
Families with kids in high school are now faced with stricter school rules over taking
kids out during term time. Many businesses close down over Xmas and New Year
which can enforce leave for many of their employees, limiting your mid-year
holidays to a shorter period. Many others with work or family commitments also
struggle to take longer holidays and take time out of their busy lives.
So, we have come up with a few interesting destinations and ideas that you can
easily fit into a two-week period. Our Prestons store has been open now for a few
months and we have already met a lot of locals and invite you to pop in to say HI to
our team. We recommend you join our Facebook page to keep up to date with our
team. Please feel free to email us with your travel enquiry and one of our
experienced team will get back to you – prestons@hot.co.nz
Best regards, Nicky, Lisa and team.
LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION
Tasmania
Tahiti
The Philippines
This little island sits at the bottom of Australia and if you like friendly folk,
cool things to see and do then this is a great under-rated destination.
Perfect as a self-drive destination with short distances and easy driving.
Some highlights are: MONA Gallery in Hobart, Port Arthur Historic site,
Freycinet National Park (fab beaches), Launceston, Cradle Mountain
National Park (stunning walks and a chance to see the local wildlife up
close – those Wombats are super cute). If you enjoy wine, beer or
whiskey then Tassie has so many fantastic cellar doors and distilleries.
Fiji
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK – while the popular resorts book up 12 months
in advance there are a few gems in Fiji that are relatively unknown still.
Depending on your budget you can get a unique experience and avoid
the crowds. Some of our favourite options are: Toberua Island Resort,
Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort and Navutu Stars Resort in the Yasawas.
For those who like to cruise we would definitely recommend Blue
Lagoon Cruises OR Captain Cook for their fabulous 3, 4 or 7 night
cruises around the Yasawa Islands.
Located just over a four-hour flight from Auckland this South Pacific paradise
has a distinct French feel. A stunning destination - beautiful beaches and
lagoons with a mountainous backdrop. You can easily head over to Moorea on
a short 30min ferry ride OR take a flight over to Bora Bora and indulge in an
overwater bungalow at one of the many gorgeous resorts. Tahiti also has some
fantastic cruise lines operating around their islands – Paul Gaugin and
Windstar offer small ship itineraries that get you to the outer islands that are
well and truly off the beaten track.
Broome & Darwin
Best to head up this way from June to September when the weather is the best.
Here you will find something to fit all budgets, but our advice is to get out and
explore the National Parks – from Darwin you have Kakadu, Katherine and the
Lichfield where you can go glamping OR stay in luxury lodges. From Broome
you can jump on a small ship cruise up into the Kimberley region. This is a
stunning location to do a 7-day cruise and combine with a few days on the
beach in Broome OR a city break in Perth.
Again a destination that Kiwi’s are not that familiar with. You can fly up
to Manila OR Cebu and then take a ferry or a short flight onto some
absolutely stunning island destinations. Some still largely untapped by
the tourist market this archipelago of islands not only offers the clearest
blue waters and an interesting culture it presents very good value for
money. A great alternative to Bali or Thailand.
OUR HOT TIPS TO PLANNING YOUR
NEXT SHORT BREAK…
• For parents: book early if travelling in the
school holidays. We recommend booking at
least three school holidays in advance
• Come in for a chat – collectively we have
“been there, done that” – don’t spend hours
trying to do all of your own research. It can be
overwhelming and very time-consuming!
• Unique “off the beaten track” destinations can
often consist of a collection of quite small,
boutique resorts which can book up early –
so get in touch now!
• At House of Travel we are TAANZ bonded
which means your money is safe with us.
Fraud is rife globally and you have to be very
careful where you send your funds.
two deep 20cm cake tins.
• Melt butter, brown sugar and golden syrup
in a saucepan until smooth and combined.
• With a whisk, stir together flour, salt,
ginger and cinnamon then sift in the baking
powder and baking soda in a large bowl.
• Mix eggs and milk in a separate bowl.
Then very gently combine the eggs and milk
with the dry ingredients and butter/sugar
mixture in the large bowl, folding until
combined. It should be a reasonably wet
mixture.
• Pour batter into the cake tins and top with
sliced pear, then bake for 50-60 minutes
until a skewer comes out clean.
• Allow to cool in pan for 20 minutes before
turning out on to a cake rack and allowing
to cool completely before layering together
with the whipped chocolate ganache (see
below).
Whipped chocolate ganache
Ingredients
375g 70% dark chocolate, finely
chopped
1½ cups cream
Method
• Place the finely chopped dark chocolate in
a heatproof bowl.
• In a saucepan, heat the cream until it
barely comes to a simmer, but do not let it
boil.
• Pour the heated cream over the chopped
chocolate. Let it sit for about 2-3 minutes to
soften the chocolate.
• Gently stir the chocolate and cream
together until the chocolate is completely
melted and the mixture is smooth and
glossy.
• Allow the ganache to cool completely in
the fridge then whip in an electric mixer on
high till doubled in size before topping each
cake and sandwiching together.
Triple ginger and
cardamom kisses
Similar to the classic; however, I like to do
these ginger kisses in a lined muffin tray,
simply because it’s easier and tidier than
piping on to oven trays and sandwiching
with butter cream, but you can do that too.
Topped with fluffy ginger buttercream and
glacé ginger, these pack a gingery punch.
Ingredients
Makes 12 medium cupcakes
2 cups flour (240g)
¾ tsp baking soda
¾ tsp baking powder
3 Tbsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp ground cinnamon
115g butter, softened
¾ cup white sugar (150g)
4 Tbsp golden syrup
3 large eggs
½ cup milk
Ginger butter cream and
glacé ginger to serve
Instructions
• Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease and
line a 12-cupcake tin with paper liners.
• In a large mixing bowl, cream together
the softened butter, sugar and golden syrup
until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a
time, beating after each addition.
• In a medium bowl, sift together the flour,
ground ginger, ground cardamom, ground
cinnamon, baking soda and baking powder.
Set aside.
• Gradually add the dry ingredients to the
butter mixture, add milk and mix until just
combined.
• Spoon the batter into the prepared muffin
tin, filling each cup about ⅔ full.
• Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20
minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into
the centre of the cake comes out clean.
• Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for a
few minutes before transferring them to a
wire rack to cool completely. Then pipe on
big dollops of the buttercream (see below)
and top with glacé ginger.
Ginger buttercream
Ingredients
225g softened butter
4 cups icing sugar, sifted
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp vanilla extract
2-3 Tbsp milk or cream
Method
• With the whisk attachment, beat softened
butter on medium speed until smooth
and creamy and gradually add icing sugar,
beating on low, then medium speed until
well combined.
• Add salt and vanilla extract, beat until
combined.
• Add cream or milk, one tablespoon at a
time, until desired consistency is reached.
• Beat on medium-high speed for 3-5
minutes until light and fluffy.
Vibrant artwork
celebrates our city
The stunning artwork Christchurch
Landing by Keith Drury – a fitting tribute
to our much-loved and resilient city, is
available in limited edition prints at Frame
‘n’ Copy in North New Brighton.
In fact, the story of this unique and
colourful artwork began at Frame ‘n’
Copy. A customer had taken another
print of a Keith Drury painting, Belfast
Cove, into Frame ‘n’ Copy to be framed.
The style and vibrant colours of that work
captivated the team, sparking the idea
to approach Keith to create an artwork
depicting Otautahi Christchurch.
He was delighted with the opportunity
and the resulting painting, Christchurch
Landing, is a truly special representation
of the city.
Natural support for healthy joints
Joint issues will affect most of us at
some point. They can appear in any joint,
such as the neck, back, shoulders, elbows,
wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.
Cartilage is the protective surface
between moving bones that allows them
to move freely. It is constantly worn
away and needs to be rebuilt. This repair
process slows down for most of us as
we age. The result is that some joints do
not have enough cartilage, causing the
joint function to be less smooth. This
is the most common form of arthritis,
osteoarthritis, leading to inflammation,
pain, stiffness, and reduced joint mobility.
Joint pain can also be a factor in falls.
Generally, joints with the most use or
stress show problems first.
Many people seek pain relief from
their doctor. The usual prescription is
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,
or NSAIDs, which offer pain relief but
do nothing to stop the progression of
arthritis.
According to the British Journal
of General Practice, NSAIDs are not
recommended for long-term use and
are responsible for 30% of hospital
admissions, mainly due to internal
bleeding, heart attack, stroke and renal
damage. Research shows that all NSAIDs
double the risk of hospitalization due to
heart failure.
MG4 X-Power potent but lacking polish
THE X-POWER is the wild child
hot EV hatch in the MG4 range
that has a bit of larrikin thrown
into the mix, adding intrigue
and excitement to its multidimensional
personality.
The adrenalin charged,
X-Power is easily the fastest and
most potent production MG ever.
It is capable of knocking out the
0-100km/h dash in a vivid 3.8
seconds, boasting dual-motor
power of 320kW and 600Nm of
torque all for $69,990.
It’s a performance car steal even
in a post Clean Car Discount
world. Nine months ago it would
have attracted a healthy $7015
rebate, meaning you could have
driven away in this barnstormer
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
for an absurdly cheap $62,975.
Specification enhancements
include orange brake calipers, a
two-tone black roof, 18-inch alloy
wheels and polished trim accents,
and an exclusive attention
grabbing new Hunter Green
colour option that the test vehicle
sported.
Not only is this compact fivedoor
hatch quick, it’s also a fast
charger capable of recharging at
up to 140kW, in a charge time of
only 26 minutes from 10-80 per
cent using a 150kW DC rapid
charger.
The X-Power is equipped
with an all-new dual motor
configuration delivering up to
320 action packed kilowatts of
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Styling 7; Value
for money 9; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8
peak performance to all four
wheels, via front (150kW) and
rear (170kW) electric motors.
Its accelerative powers are
remarkable with throttle
response both breathtaking and
instant.
Tyre rumble, especially on
coarse road surfaces, becomes
especially niggly on longer trips.
Apart from this irritation, it’s
smooth and silent around town,
ticking even more boxes for an
already appealing vehicle.
The claimed 450km plus allelectric
driving range shrinks
rapidly if you binge on the
X-Power’s addictive performance.
A modern and thoughtfully
designed cabin is well
put together but given its
performance hero status in the
MG family, the interior doesn’t
have the expected X-factor.
On the outside, the generic EV
styling looks far too much like its
mainstream siblings. A bit more
X-factor wouldn’t go amiss here
either.
The X-Power has almost every
technology base is covered.
I especially liked the clever
dual-screen technology with
configurable driver display,
featuring a floating infotainment
screen, and an audio system with
Apple Car Play and Android
Auto.
A rotary dial gear selector is
intuitive and easy to use, while
getting to where you want to
go is made easy with satellite
navigation.
The MG Pilot system makes
a compelling safety statement
off the back of a comprehensive
package of standard safety kit.
The test car felt super solid,
agile and stable on the road and
body roll is superbly contained
under brisk cornering.
Direct and well-weighted
steering with just the right
balance of road feel, rounds
things out nicely. However, as
an overall ride and handling
package it falls short of the best
hyper hot hatches, although you
have to cut the X-Power a little
slack as most of are priced well
north of this one.
Even making those allowances,
more finessing is required to take
some of the edge off the hard
low-speed ride. Another work-on
is dialling back the suspension
noise that’s fairly strident over
more demanding patchwork and
potholed road surfaces that ask
the hard questions of a vehicle’s
suspension.
