Proud of Me comp. Michele Fernández Demo recording at www. Michele-Fernandez.com Commissioned by the South Florida Pride Bands, sponsored by FLoatarama, Inc., to celebrate diversity and the 13th season of the Pride Youth Band on February 25, 2024 "Proud of Me" is a work that is deeply meaningful to me. When I was first approached about wriJng a serious symphonic work with a disco feel to celebrate diversity and share the tropical South Florida vibe, I felt immediately energized. At the same Jme, the occasion also reminded me of the immense responsibility that we all have to remind the young people in our lives, as oMen as possible, of their unique special giMs and how priceless each soul really is (while we also remind them of things that could be worked on for their own sakes, of course). This mulJcultural flavored work is based on the chord progression to "Over the Rainbow" to symbolize that every young person can "fly" if we can offer appreciaJon for each person's diverse humanity. Its mood is upliMing, triumphant, and offers a rhythmic groove to (hopefully) moJvate players and listeners alike to move without fear of judgment... to be comfortable in one's own skin, whatever that skin that may be for each one of us. The next Jme you are near a mirror, look into it. Instead of picking out the things that you might wish to be different, try to instead think to yourself, "I'm proud of me", because- we are proud of you, too.
