Volunteer coastguard’s
big swim to give back
• By Dylan Smits
ANDREW SOUTHEN
is making a splash for
Coastguard New Zealand
funding by swimming 50km
this month.
The volunteer coastguard
is raising funds for the
organisation after joining the
Lyttelton-based branch 18
months ago.
“I’m into boating and
anything to do with water and
the sea. I thought it was good
to put something back into the
community,” he said.
The Big Swim is a fundraiser
for Coastguard NZ where
participants get sponsored for
swimming a distance of their
choice during July.
Southen hopes the challenge
will prepare him for the South
Island masters short course
championships next month at
Jellie Park.
He will compete in the 100m
individual medley, 50m and
100m freestroke, and 50m,
100m and 200m backstroke.
The 64-year-old swims with
the Jasi Masters Swim Club and
has already completed 30.2km
of the challenge.
Cottage
could be
moved
to higher
ground
• By Dylan Smits
MOVING TO a new site is
likely for Akaroa’s Yew Cottage
as options for the flood-prone
heritage building are assessed.
Its foundations and lower
interior are water-damaged after
sitting unoccupied since 2007 in a
low lying area.
The cottage in Rue Jolie was
built by a cooper in 1877 and
passed into city council ownership
after being purchased by the
Banks Peninsula council in 1981.
The Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board directed city council staff
on Monday to focus on finding a
new site on higher ground.
To make way for potential
commercial use, board members
also asked staff to investigate rescinding
the 2022 board decision,
which designated residential use
for the cottage.
Akaroa Civic Trust chair
Mike Norris was pleased the
community board was looking
into moving the cottage
for restoration, rather than
demolishing it.
KAITORETE SPIT is being
considered as a site for multiple
launch pads by a joint venture.
The joint venture running the
project on 1000ha of the spit
beside shallow Lake Ellesmere
is gauging demand from
international space companies
and asking them what they need.
International commercial
and military demand has been
growing rapidly since 2020 for
launches of the small and cheap
type of satellite that Kaitorete is
well suited for.
The Tāwhaki National
Aerospace Centre which was set
up four years ago, has recently
opened a small runway and
hangar on the spit.
It told RNZ it had “the
potential to scale up the centre,
working with the appropriate
partners, to cater for multiple
vertical launch sites”.
“We’ve also been talking to
international companies to
understand sector demand
and potential infrastructure
requirements for vertical
launch,” chief executive Linda
Falwasser said.
The National Space Agency
said it had funded Tāwhaki to
investigate and “the government
is expecting a business case to be
finalised later in 2024”.
The spit could fit up to six
launchpads, a report to the
government in 2020, released
under the OIA, advised.
“The maximum possible
number of launch pads is six
micro-small pads or three heavy
launch pads,” it said.
However, it was more likely
to get two or three pads for
launching small or micro-size
rockets under five tonnes each,
depending on how much area
was needed for emergency debris
dispersal (up to 15km, though
Elon Musk’s SpaceX rockets use
much less).
The aim is to get pads that
multiple companies can use,
with the country’s only existing
launch site, at Māhia in Hawke’s
relishing
• From page 1
“The most I’ve probably done
before is 30km in a month. It
is a bit of an effort, but I’m just
enjoying the challenge so that
gives you a bit of incentive to
carry on,” said Southen.
He has to swim 12km a week,
split between four sessions, to
reach his goal.
Southen moved to Lyttelton
two years ago. After reducing
his workload in his plumbing
company, Isovalve Ltd, he
decided to join Coastguard
Canterbury.
“I’m teeing up something to
spend my time with in retirement,”
he said.
Southen has raised $350 of his
$750 goal so far and hopes to
surpass it.
He is also training fortnightly
to become part of the coastguard’s
operational crew and
aims to be qualified to go on
rescues in six months.
“I’m looking forward to
getting called out. Might be
incidents where you get dragged
out of your living room, but
that’s part of it,” he said.
Cottage’s future still on table
• From page 1
“It would be a shame to
demolish it. I think if it can be
preserved. We’d support that,”
Norris said.
No final decision
has been
made as Monday’s
session
was information
only. The community
board
still needs to
take an official
vote when staff
Mike
Norris
return with more detail.
Norris said previous
indecision by the city council
has made it more difficult to
find a long-term solution for the
cottage.
“It’s been neglected so much
that I think the council needs
to have a really good long look
at what they’ve proposed to do
with it if they do restore it. It’s no
good having an empty building,”
he said.
Banks
Peninsula city
councillor
Tyrone Fields
rejected the idea
city council
indecision
has further
damaged the Tyrone
building, saying Fields
a lack of community input in
the past has created uncertainty
about how the cottage should be
used.
“We’ve tried to be responsible
with ratepayers’ money and
have asked staff to find the best
solutions for that.”
Fields favours moving the
building over demolition, but
would prefer the city council
RESTORE: Yew Cottage, built in 1877, is an example of early settler homes in Banks
Peninsula. The Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Community Board is directing city
council staff to investigate moving the flood-prone cottage to higher ground.
does not pay for it and a new
private owner is found to
foot the bill for the move and
restoration.
Council staff also presented
other options for the cottage to
the community board, which are
unlikely to go ahead.
Raising the building’s level
1.9m was last discussed in June
last year, but board members
found the about $500,000 cost
too expensive and requested staff
provide alternatives.
Demolishing the building is
another, cheaper option.
City council acting head of
parks Rupert Bool said the costs
for the different options have not
been estimated.
Me and Mr Jones By Suzi Ronson
My Life with David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars
From the stylist behind David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust
look, an electrifying peek behind the curtains during a
legendary chapter of pop culture history. ‘Suzi Ronson
was there as Bowie transitioned from suburban folkie to
world superstar and genius. Few can offer such insight,
and tell this fascinating story with such verve.’ HANIF
KUREISHI Suzi Ronson was working in a Beckenham hair
her weekly shampoo and set. After being introduced to
her son David and his wife Angie, Suzi finds herself at
in their raucous world. Having crafted his iconic Ziggy
Stardust hairstyle, Suzi becomes the only working
Community comes together for icy dip
A CHILLING plunge and
Organiser Julie Zarifeh started
the swim to remember her
both passed away within weeks of
each other in 2017.
Paul Zarifeh, died in November
RECIPIENTS of the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation’s
Scholarships & Awards
Programme, and the
Community Grants Programme
were recognised on Friday
night at the foundation’s awards
evening.
This is the fourth year of
the Scholarships & Awards
Programme, and once again
there were some outstanding
candidates.
Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation trustee John
Christensen has been involved
with the programme since its
inception.
“Each year we shortlist
the candidates, interview the
shortlist and then have a lively
discussion as to who will be the
recipient for each scholarship or
award,” Christensen said.
“Whilst it’s time-consuming
and challenging to identify
the successful recipient, it’s an
incredibly rewarding process
to go through as there as some
fantastic young people out
there.”
The Scholarships & Awards
programme is sponsored by
locals – both individuals and
businesses – so it’s great to be
able to introduce their recipients
• $5000 Sciences Scholarship: Ben Isles
• $5000 Health Sciences Scholarship: Tilly Pritchard
• $5000 Humanities Scholarship: Rupert Shepherd
• $2000 Apprentice Award: Sam Price
• $5000 Outward Bound Scholarship: Cara Brignull
• $3000 Environment Award: Seed Ladies
to the sponsor of the award at
the evening, so that they too can
see the calibre of the recipients.
A Sumner resident who
sponsors the Environment
Award, said sponsoring an
award is a great way to put
something back into your local
community.
“I love walking over the Port
Hills so the Environment Award
ticks both the ‘greening NZ’ and
the ‘local community’ boxes
for me. I’d encourage anyone
to support these awards when
reviewing which registered
charities to support,” the
sponsor said.
“In my case it’s great to know
and see how your donation is
being used locally. Plus, you
get to meet the people who are
doing the hard work to make
our community a better place to
work, live and play, and to say
thank you to them.”
This year the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation also
provided five community grants
to celebrate the foundation’s 30
years of support for the local
community.
Foundation trustee Andrew
Regreening Project
community grants was a great
way to mark 30 years of service.
“We were pleased with the
number and quality of the
applications from groups,
clubs and organisations from
within the catchment area –
from Taylors Mistake through
to Heathcote and around to
Brookhaven,” Clark said.
“In an ideal world we’d love
to offer the community grants
each year if we could find
sponsors in the same way we do
for the Scholarships & Awards
Programme. We’ve already
had one expression of interest
following the awards evening
but we need a few more for this
to be viable.”
Volunteers step up to
construct picnic tables
FOUR NEW picnic tables are
being installed at McCormacks
Bay and Charlesworth Reserves
after co-ordination between
community groups.
The Ferrymead Rotary Club
funded the tables which were
built by Linwood Menz Shed
volunteers.
“The generosity of the
Ferrymead Rotary Club will
allow locals to sit down and
enjoy the stunning environment
that these two reserves have
to offer,” said Avon-Heathcote
Estuary Trust manager Tanya
Jenkins.
The trust approached the
Menz Shed about designing
the tables after being offered
funding by the Rotary club.
The handy volunteers, part of
the Linwood Resource Centre,
were happy to support the
initiative and fulfil instructions
to create sturdy tables, said
Jenkins.
“The project has provided the
opportunity for local men to
share and pass on knowledge
of woodworking to others” said
Charlie Hulbert, Linwood Menz
Shed community development
co-ordinator.
Two of the tables are
HANDY: Menz Shed volunteers building the picnic tables for
McCormacks Bay and Charlesworth Reserves.
now available for use at
McCormack’s Bay Reserve.
“Trust volunteers have spent
eight years here on a regular
basis to plant, weed, water,
and mulch several thousand
seedlings for people and wildlife
to enjoy and it is certainly worth
a look,” said Jenkins.
The other two will be placed
in Charlesworth Reserve soon.
Each table is secured to a
concrete base and milled from
macrocarpa wood with a thick
top and seating.
They have been crafted
to be durable in the salty
environment.
TRAVELLERS: The Dolphins rugby team are looking for
sponsorship to help pay for travel and accommodation costs.
Dolphins juniors set
for Wellington visit
• By Dylan Smits
A LYTTELTON Rugby Club
tradition spanning nearly 60
years is returning with the club’s
year 6 juniors on their way to
Wellington to face Norths RFC.
The exchange tournament is
making a comeback after being
on hold since the Covid-19
pandemic in 2020.
The 9 to 11-year-olds of the
Dolphins team are fundraising
for the trip in September with
raffles, bake sales and uniform
sponsorships.
“We’re going to come up
against 11, 12 going on 13-yearolds.
So it’s going to be a bit of
a challenge for the boys,” said
coach Joe Forster.
The Norths team will come
to Lyttelton first on September
6 for a game hosted by the
Lyttelton club. The following
weekend, the Dolphins will
travel to Wellington to play.
“The boys are very excited. It’s
something fun, it’s something
new and you don’t get a lot
chance to do these kinds of
rugby exchanges at their age.”
Ease Those Aching Joints at Kōwhai Vet
Caring for Dogs with Arthritis
At Kōwhai Vet, we understand how much your furry friend
means to you. Seeing them struggle with arthritis can be heartwrenching,
but with the right care and adjustments, we can
help make their life more comfortable and enjoyable. Here’s a
guide to understanding and managing arthritis in dogs.
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is like the wear and tear we humans
experience in our joints as we age. It’s a condition where the
protective cartilage in a dog’s joints wears down over time,
leading to pain and stiffness. This is particularly common in
older dogs and certain breeds that are more prone to joint
issues.
Diagnosing Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is diagnosed through a combination of signs
that you may notice at home about your pet’s reduced
mobility, physical examination and x-rays. When you bring
your dog to Kōwhai Vet, our vets will perform a gentle and
thorough physical exam. We’ll check for signs like swelling,
reduced range of motion, and any discomfort your dog might
feel when we touch their joints. We’ll also watch how they walk
and move around. To get a clearer picture, we might suggest
taking some x-rays. These images help us see the inside of
Normal Hips
Severe arthritis in hips
The hips are a common joint for the
development of osteoarthritis
your dog’s joints and check for signs of osteoarthritis like
bone spurs or narrowed joint spaces. It also helps us to rule
out other possible causes of the pain such as bone tumours.
Sometimes, we might recommend more detailed imaging, but
x-rays are usually a great start.
Medical Treatments for Pain Relief Managing
your dog’s pain is our top priority.
Here are some common treatments we might recommend:
• Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): NSAIDs
are a staple for reducing inflammation and pain in dogs
with arthritis. Medications like carprofen, meloxicam,
and deracoxib can make a big difference. Of course, we’ll
monitor your dog closely to avoid any side effects.
• Beransa: We’re
excited about Beransa
(bedinvetmab), a newer
treatment that’s been
helping many dogs. It’s
a monthly injection that
targets and neutralises a
protein involved in pain
signalling, providing
significant relief and
improving mobility.
Supportive Treatments
Alongside medications, there are several other ways we can
support your dog’s joint health:
• Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These supplements, found in fish
oil, can help reduce inflammation. We’ll guide you on how
to incorporate them into your dog’s diet safely.
• Weight Management: Keeping your dog at a healthy
weight is crucial. Extra pounds put more strain on their
joints, so we’ll work with you to develop a balanced diet
and exercise plan.
• Physical Therapy: Just like humans, dogs benefit from
physical therapy. Tailored exercises and stretches
can improve joint function and muscle strength.
Hydrotherapy, or water therapy, is especially gentle on
joints and very effective.
Making Your Home Comfortable
Small changes at home can make a big difference for a dog
with arthritis:
• Non-Slip Mats: Adding non-slip mats or rugs on slippery
floors can help your dog move around more confidently
without the fear of slipping.
• Orthopaedic Dog Beds: Invest in a good orthopaedic
dog bed. These beds provide excellent support and
cushioning, helping your dog rest comfortably.
• Ramps: Using ramps instead of stairs helps your dog
avoid the strain of jumping or climbing. This is great for
getting in and out of cars or navigating steps.
• Raised Food and Water Bowls: Elevate your dog’s food
and water bowls. This simple change means they don’t
have to bend down as much, reducing strain on their neck
and joints.
• Slings or Harnesses: For dogs with severe mobility issues,
a sling or harness can be very helpful. It allows you to
support your dog and help them move around without
putting extra pressure on their joints.
At Kōwhai Vet Clinic, we’re here to support you and your
dog through every stage of their arthritis journey. By
combining medical treatments, supportive therapies, and
a few home adjustments, we can help your furry friend live
a comfortable and happy life. If you have any questions or
need personalised advice, please don’t hesitate to reach out
to us. Together, we can make a world of difference for your
beloved pet.
For any specific treatments and recommendations tailored
to your dog’s condition, please consult with us at Kōwhai
Vet Clinic. We’re always here to help.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
From Polly Woodside to Rona and back
• By Steve McKelvey
OF THE many sailing ships in
Te Ūaka Lyttelton Museum’s
online collection only one or
possibly two remain floating.
Many were among the
hundreds wrecked on the New
Zealand coast, sunk during
World War 1, or broken up when
old and no longer useful. Some
spent their last days as hulks
towed around ports, carrying
coal for refilling steam ships’
bunkers.
One of the sailing ships in our
photograph collection was used
to provide coal to steam dredges
in Melbourne, Australia in the
early 1960s.
She was the coal hulk Rona,
which had a previous special
connection with Lyttelton,
where she often visited between
as a three-masted barque
carrying timber, coal, grain, and
produce. From 1904 until 1912
she was registered in Lyttelton.
Her original name was Polly
Woodside.
In 1885, the Polly Woodside,
owned by William Woodside,
was launched in Belfast,
Northern Ireland. A steel-hulled
ship, she was 58.5m long with
a gross tonnage of 678 imperial
tons. She carried bulk cargo
such as coal, grain, and fertiliser
mostly between Britain and
North and South America.
After the Woodside family
moved to California, the Polly
Woodside was sold.
The New Zealand purchasers
in 1904 were AH Turnbull, a
Christchurch merchant who had
shipping interests, and Captain
Hugh Monro of Lyttelton. The
Polly Woodside was renamed
Rona after Monro’s daughter.
In 1906, Arthur Turnbull’s
brother David, a Timaru grain
and seed merchant who owned
DC Turnbull and Co, joined
them to incorporate the Colonial
Sailing Ship Company Ltd.
The company operated three
sailing vessels, the Rona, Wai-iti
and Lutterworth, trading mostly
on the New Zealand coast and
the Australian run. Coal and
timber were the main cargoes.
All three eventually
became coal hulks, the Waiiti
in Lyttelton Harbour, the
Lutterworth in Wellington, and
Rona in Melbourne.
In 1911, Rona was sold
for £3,000 (NZ$900,000) to
Auckland owners, and then
purchased by Wellington ship
owner George Scales in 1916.
The ship traded in the Pacific
and often returned from San
Francisco with cases of benzene.
Many New Zealand maritime
apprentices served their time on
the Rona including Captain Roy
Champion, who later became
Harbour Master of Lyttelton.
In 1922, the Rona made her
last trans-Tasman voyage from
Wellington to Sydney. The
37-year-old barque had been
sold to the Adelaide Steamship
Company.
After having masts and
rigging dismantled, she was
used for loading coal onto steam
ships. Two years later she was
towed to Melbourne where she
continued as a hulk until 1943.
Rona’s next chapter was in
New Guinea where she was
drafted into service as a barge
for the Australian Navy, being
towed to various ports over the
next three years.
Finally back in Melbourne,
Rona continued carrying coal.
In 1962 with the decline in
steam, Rona’s future looked
uncertain, however a proposal
was put to the National Trust of
Australia to restore her.
After much discussion,
planning, and fundraising,
volunteers (mostly from a
seafaring background) began the
physical work in 1973.
In 1978, the renamed Polly
The Rona, renamed as Polly
Woodside in Melbourne,
1986.
MUSEUM REF 11334.1
Woodside was opened to the
public as part of a new maritime
museum in Melbourne, housed
in a restored wooden-walled dry
dock at South Wharf near the
mouth of the Yarra River.
She is described as a ship that
circumnavigated the world 17
times, travelling 2.5 million
kilometres.
As for the Rona’s Lyttelton
owners, DC Turnbull and Co is
still going strong in Timaru after
130 years. The Turnbull brothers
and Captain Monro went on to
expand the Canterbury Steam
Shipping Company, owning
well-known coastal shipping
vessels such as the Calm, Breeze,
Gale, and Storm.
Anytime is a good time to replenish
and revitalize your skin. We all want
our skin to look healthy, smooth, clear
and radiant. Body Care has just the
treatments to help achieve this goal.
“We tend to cover up in colder months
and cut back on beauty routines, but it’s
actually the best time to replenish and
revitalise the skin,” said Tina Day, Body
Care owner/operator. “At Body Care our
most important consideration is ‘you’.
Bespoke facial treatments are tailor
made specifically to address all skin types
procedures.
“SQT is a brand new revolution in Bio
Microneedling,” said Tina. “The results
speak for themselves and it has become
one of my most requested treatments.”
SQT has developed the first of its kind
treatment using fresh water siliceous
sponge spicules to create channels in the
skin.
There is no device, no blood and no
breakage of the skin. And it’s effective.
REAL ESTATE
Reimagine and Transform
29 Ripon Street, Lyttelton
Deadline Sale by 24 July (USP)
3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen/dining,
1 living, no garage or off-street parking
Listing No. RH1251
Open Home: Sun 21 July 1pm-1:30pm
Here is a once in a lifetime invitation to
reimagine, renovate and transform this early
1900s Villa into the Lyttelton home of your
dreams. Prime location. Fantastic sun exposure.
Easy access. Single level. The potential is
undeniable and the hard work is inevitable.
On offer here is an exceptional opportunity
for buyers who have the passion, vision,
renovation and building skills to bring this
home back to its former glory; to create an
ideal forever family home in this sought
after location.
Primarily in original condition, the home is
configured to offer a large separate lounge;
open plan kitchen with dining; internal
bathroom with shower over bath and vanity;
three double bedrooms; and an external
separate laundry with toilet.
Whether you choose to renovate or completely
rebuild, this prime elevated and easily accessible
land parcel with potential harbour views,
ensures the possibilities here are favourable.
Make no mistake this is not for the faint of
heart. But fortune favours the brave, and
seldom do you get a chance to strip a home
back to the bones and restart. Then job done,
the hard decision will be to either move in
and enjoy your hard work, sell it for the next
project, or start your investment portfolio.
All options are a win for this property - so
long as you can roll your sleeves up and get
stuck in with your specialist team.
Imagine if this was one of the last true
renovation opportunities in Lyttelton - will
you be disappointed if you didn’t grab this
while it existed? See you at the Open Home,
or better yet, book a private viewing and let’s
talk design ideas.
