Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny 

on what we ate, who served us, who we bumped into and, you 

know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Dockside Dave’s Seafood Market, at the site of what 

used to be Cappelletti and Sons Italian Deli, on West Perry Street. 

The vibe: Rustic nautical is the decor theme here, with fishing nets, 

ropes, reclaimed wood boards and myriad little statues of sea captains, 

boats and sealife. It feels like a market, which is exactly the point. 

The owner: Kyle Mattera is a Cape May Court House lad who cut 

his kitchen teeth cooking at Stone Harbor Pizza and Avalon Seafood. In 

2022, he went out on his own with a food truck called Dockside Dave’s, 

in honor of his late father, David, who passed in 2017. You can find the 

truck on weekends at Lazy Bass, a bar located under the North Wildwood 

bridge in a rather alluring little waterfront spot at Grassy Sound 

Marina. Then, last year, Kyle and wife Karylin (with help from his 

mother, brother and sister) expanded and leased a brick-and-mortar 

place in Cape May. So, this is their second summer of operations on our 

magical little island. 

The food: We mixed it up with our takeout order, going for a little 

bit of land and a little bit of sea. We had the chicken cheesesteak, on an 

Atlantic City long roll, and the lobster mac and cheese, topped with the 

housemade cheese sauce. 

Next time: It’s grillin’ season! And we plan on returning to Dockside 

Dave’s to stock up for a mighty round of seafood to throw on the 

grill. There’s always an excellent variety of fish, usually including ahi 

tuna, flounder, sea bass, salmon and swordfish, along with the shore 

crustacean and mollusk essentials, such as shrimp, scallops, clams 

and oysters. For your sides, there are soups and an excellent variety of 

salads, along with their apparently famous Docksauce! Add in grocery 

items such as seasonings, marinades, local produce, plus cheeses, jams 

and snacks, and you’ve got everything you need in one pitstop. 

The info: There’s onsite parking, which is a major plus, especially 

in the heart of the island. Opening hours are 11-7 on Sunday and Tuesday, 

and 10-7 Wednesday thru Saturday. Dockside Dave’s is closed on 

Mondays.

Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy 

renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and 

there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to 

enjoy great drinks and a great vibe. 

Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw 

bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus 

outside tables for some great people-watching! 

Enjoy a fun and creative twist on an age-old favorite. 

From wild combinations, to classic ingredients, there’s 

plenty you’ll want to try when you visit. 

Serving great classic comfort food in a beautiful 

location with a historic vibe. Chef Sherry Sheldon 

created a menu that offers pub-style fare while 

embracing the farm-to-table concept. 

The Kulkowitz family’s latest culinary adventure. 

They’re bringing a new vibe to the Cape May dining 

scene with menu featuring local food with global 

flavors. 

As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get 

Guinness and good pub grub. The burgers and meat 

pies have been receiving rave reviews.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

My friend Peter Manzleman 

just phoned to tell me that two 

Oystercatcher chicks are following 

adults about at Corson’s Inlet State 

Park and to tell me that the new 

shorebirds book has helped him with his interpretive 

duties. Delighted to hear it. But Peter’s 

call reminded me to warn readers to please 

keep dogs on a leash when walking beaches. 

Corson’s Inlet is not the only place these 

football-sized, pied-plumaged, beach-nesting 

shorebirds breed. The South Cape May 

Meadows/State Park beach hosts multiple 

Oystercatchers, as does Stone Harbor Point. 

Because of the specialized feeding habits 

of this loud, chunky shorebird, the puffball-shaped 

chicks are dependent upon adults 

for food for several weeks. This is very unlike 

most shorebird species, whose chicks are able 

to fend for themselves hours after hatching. 

So precocial are birds like Red Knot and Semipalmated 

Sandpipers that one adult typically 

abandons the eggs, leaving incubation duties 

and the job of parenting to the remaining adult. 

Where does the unbridled adult go? South. 

Their procreative duties done for another year, 

one member of the dyad splits heading for winter 

quarters. Indeed these first fall migrants are 

arriving in Cape May, now, in July. The second 

adult will follow in a few weeks. The kids will 

follow in August. This staggered migratory 

strategy reduces competition at key feeding 

areas where younger birds would otherwise be 

at a competitive disadvantage. 

How do young shorebirds know where 

to go without adult guidance? The routes and 

timing appear to be hotwired into the shorebird 

brain. All of New Jersey’s coastal habitats 

support migrating sandpipers, although most 

would be more accurately be dubbed mudpipers. 

Sand, once shed of its film of water, 

hardens into near impenetrable concrete. This 

is why the tiny Sanderlings play tag with the 

waves, probing at the water’s edge where sand 

is still held in semi-suspension. 

But do go out to Stone Harbor Point and 

witness a marvelous spectacle of nature as 

Whimbrel gather to sit out the high tide. These 

large curlews with forceps-like bills forage in 

salt marsh, with bills specialized to pluck fiddler 

crabs from burrows. The end of Shell Bay 

Boulevard often hosts a feeding flock, but they 

can be found behind Wildwood’s beaches, too. 

I encourage you to go out and celebrate 

the 53 or so shorebird species that thrive here, 

ferried daily to our marshes, beaches and mud 

flats with every passing cold front — a National 

Geographic Special right on our doorstep from 

now until October.

few weeks ago, I wrote about The 

Beekeeper, a film where the villains 

were evil scammers that prey on the 

elderly — and their annihilation was 

so gratifying. Let’s add another group 

of treacherous scum to the list of vermin we 

love to see get pummeled, namely Nazis. 

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an 

action/comedy set during the onset of World 

War II. There is a band of undercover and 

“loosely sanctioned” British spies. This team 

of rogues are directed by Winston Churchill in 

1940 to find a way to cripple Hitler by stopping 

a massive fuel delivery to his fleet of U-boats. 

These are no “James Bond” spies, but they 

may have inspired Bond’s author. More on 

that later. 

These “spies” don’t follow a well-mapped 

plan, and they may not even have everything 

worked out in their heads. But they’re committed 

to killing Nazis quite personally and 

stopping their plans at every turn. Guy Ritchie 

directs. He’s known for his big money makers 

— the reimagined Sherlock Holmes (the

Robert Downey, Jr versions from 2009 and 

2011) and the live-action Aladdin (2019). 

The movie stars two fan favorites: first, 

the dashing Henry Cavill (the one who 

played Superman in more recent movies). 

Wait, what? You say you don’t see him? That’s 

because in this movie he’s unkempt and wacky 

AF. He brings a lot of the comic relief while 

remaining genuine. Next is Alan Ritchson, the 

hunk who plays Reacher in the Amazon series. 

He pretty much plays the same character with 

a British accent, and his weapon of choice is a 

bow and arrow. 

The film moves with action and espionage. 

The Nazis go down like so many bad 

guys in a John Wick flick. This isn’t the best 

action movie you’ll ever see, but it’s certainly 

worth the watch. It didn’t make all that much 

money, and it’s streaming now since a theatrical 

release a few months ago. Critics are 

positive about it, while audiences are thrilled. 

Author of the James Bond books, Ian 

Fleming, was an actual ranking member of 

the Naval Intelligence Division during WWII. 

Was he helpful in getting this ragtag team 

together as portrayed in the movie? Well, 

maybe or maybe not. Were all of the events of

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, The Last Waltz 

Don’t trust anyone over 30.” That 

Sixties shorthand for the hope and 

energy of young people still made 

sense in 1978 when my sister Sally 

and her friends walked to the movie 

theater next to Korvette’s to see The Last Waltz. 

At 17, they were achingly cool, confident in 

their expertise on the album Music from Big Pink. 

They “knew” the personalities of The Band — 

Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, 

Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel — and the 

addictions and accidents that troubled them. 

They could opine on the lyrics or the meaning 

of the elephant in Bob Dylan’s cover art. They 

agreed with Rolling Stone’s praise of the “simple, 

back-porch vibe” of the music. Dylan could 

have been singing “Forever Young” directly to 

that group — they couldn’t imagine being anything 

but young, so it seemed logical that The 

Band’s members needed to retire at the ripe old 

age of thirty-something. 

The Band performed together for the last 

time on November 25, 1976 at the Winterland 

Ballroom in San Francisco. It was Thanksgiving, 

so the audience of 5,000 enjoyed turkey as The 

Band performed. From the outset, concertgoers 

expected something special — tickets 

were $25 in a time when most concerts were 

$7. Martin Scorcese, fresh out of film school 

and high off of the success of his film Mean 

Streets and a dangerous cocaine habit, captured 

the magic of that farewell. The Last Waltz could 

be a highlight reel of rock and roll, featuring 

standout performances from The Band and 

from their guests. They opened with “Up on 

Cripple Creek” and closed with “I Shall Be 

Released.” Poets and ballroom dancers blended 

in, and Van Morrison’s Irish lullaby, “Tura Lura 

Lural,” doesn’t seem out of place. Joni Mitchell, 

offstage, backed up Neil Young’s haunting performance 

of “Helpless” before coming onstage 

for “Acadian Driftwood.” Scorcese filmed some 

of the best bits later, on a soundstage, capturing 

singer Mavis Staples mouthing “beautiful” 

after performing “The Weight” and Emmylou 

Harris in blue singing “Evangeline,” along with 

interviews with the performers. The Last Waltz 

“captures the euphoria of live music.”

Not long ago, I went to a birthday party celebrating 

a woman’s 60th. I was there as a plus 

one so I do not know the birthday girl that well.

was a frilly wishing well for cards, which I presume 

was for cash gifts. Really? This woman 

is obviously wealthy and, to me, the well was 

a crass invitation to give money. When I mentioned 

it to my date, he said, “If you don’t want 

to give money, don’t.” It just seemed tasteless.

time on this. This, as you said, is not someone

I had some friends over for dinner. After 

the first wave of eating, I asked if they wanted 

seconds and said I’d be happy to pass the 

serving dishes around. One of the guests — a 

woman I did not know all that well — said, “No 

thanks, but I’ll take some to go.” To go?! I was 

so mad, but, of course, bit my tongue and gave 

her one of my Tupperwares, which I doubt I’ll 

ever get back. Should I have said, “We’re not 

prepared for to-go orders, but will work on 

that for the next time.” Or did I do the right 

thing? — To Go Irked 

Dear Irked 

As you said, “of course” you bit your 

tongue. That was the right thing to do. Look 

at it as a lesson learned in terms of who gets 

another invitation. What you need to now is 

to treat yourself to a takeout. We’re thinking a 

Delaney’s burger, an Oyster Bay slider of the 

day, or a curry from the Filling Station. As to 

the question of whether she was out of line — 

maybe. She has done this before. Clearly, she 

did not read the room, let’s leave it at that.
