Development
Academic Hub
In January 2024, Minister for Further and
Higher Education, Research, Innovation and
Science and our current Taoiseach, Simon
Harris, TD and Minister for Public Expenditure,
NDP Delivery and Reform Paschal Donohoe,
TD marked the next phase in the construction
of the new Academic Hub.
The Academic Hub is set to be a single
integrated campus library that will, when
completed, provide a 12,600m2 building to
accommodate a range of student and staff
supports, including the Career Development
Centre, Assistive Technologies, Maths Learning
Centre and the Academic Writing Centre.
‘I have seen first-hand the evolution of the TU Campus
at Grangegorman, in the heart of my constituency, and
the positive impact it has had on the local, academic
and student communities. The Academic Hub & Library
project is a wonderful example of the transformation
of this development, investing in our economy through
the creation of employment and providing greater
access to education for current and future generations
of students. The Government’s provision of €14
million euro in Exchequer funding emphasises the
commitment to continue the development process as
part of the National Strategic Outcomes of Project
Ireland 2040, both within the National Development
Plan and the current National Planning Framework.’
Minister Donohoe, TD
Aras Gael General Teaching
Building-PPP Blanchardstown
Opening in Q1 2025, the new 4,080m2 teaching facility in
Blanchardstown will support the future needs of learners in West
Dublin. With universal design at its heart, the modern educational
facility will include open, flexible spaces for active learning and
will enable TU Dublin to meet the needs for worker upskilling in the
region.
05
The project represents an investment by the
State in third level education in excess of
€90m funded through a combination of the
sale of TU Dublin properties and exchequer
funding.
This development will ensure TU Dublin’s seven
library sites are merged into the one state-ofthe-art
building as shown on page 5.

06 CAET Building - PPP
Tallaght
This project is a 5,200m2 multi-disciplinary
building to house our teaching and research
in hospitality, culinary arts, engineering and
apprenticeship activities. Building commenced
in January 2023 and when completed will
deliver lecture theatres, a training restaurant,
design studios, and research facilities. As part
of the Government Third Level PPP bundle, this
very significant capital investment project will
further reinforce the commitment of TU Dublin
to South Dublin. It will facilitate collaboration
between students, staff and members of local
organisations in modern facilities that promote
research and student learning, while also
directly addressing the needs of industry and
organisations in the region. The CAET Building
is due to be completed in Q3 2025.
Launch of the
West Quad,
Grangegorman
Property Exchange
Procurement
The Grangegorman Development
Agency were very pleased to launch the
West Quad, Grangegorman Property
Exchange procurement in 2024, seeking
a development partner for another capital
project on the City Campus.
The West Quad will provide a new home
for TU Dublin’s Faculty of Business, along
with spaces for general teaching, informal
learning and a conferring hall.
An impressive multi-storey brick structure,
it is planned around an airy quadrangle
with a public thoroughfare. It includes a
c.850-seater hall, which is arranged flexibly
to support a variety of uses. The overall
development will make convivial spaces for
our existing and emerging university and
neighbourhood for many generations to
come.
This c.21,000m2 project significantly
advances the consolidation of efficient
and environmentally responsible new
and repurposed facilities underway at
Grangegorman.
Sustainability at TU Dublin
The 2023 calendar year was a significant period for progressing
sustainability at TU Dublin.
Over the last 12 months, we saw the appointment of leadership roles
within the Sustainability Team including Sustainability Education,
Decarbonisation, Sustainability Intelligence, and Societal Engagement.
Together with the Vice President for Sustainability, Jennifer Boyer, these
new teams provide support across the University for the transformative
change required to develop our people to become responsible global
citizens, achieve our climate action targets, and to make positive
societal impact through our research, learning and operations activity.
TU Dublin’s Commitment to
Climate Action and Environmental
Sustainability
In March 2023, TU Dublin published its first Climate Action Roadmap
which set out a route towards meeting our obligations under the
Public Sector Climate Action Mandate, and our ambitions to; advance
new knowledge, shape policy, and transform our campus into a living
breathing beacon of sustainability.
As part of student orientation in September, a Sustainability and Climate
Action programme was delivered to over 5,400 first year students
who participated in 30 individual interactive sustainability workshops.
The inaugural programme was designed to introduce students to
sustainability at TU Dublin and to inspire them to get involved in learning
opportunities, projects, and events. Partnering with faculties and
schools, strategic projects, local community groups and businesses,
the Sustainability Education Team delivered a series of Sustainability &
Climate Action challenges with more than 300 students participating
in a challenge.
The end of 2023 saw TU Dublin reach a strategic milestone with the
achievement of Green Flag accreditation for all campus locations by An
Taisce’s Green-Campus Programme. The Green-Campus Committee,
together with the wider collective Green Team and over 50 external
partners, progressed environmental action on campus under the
themes of Litter & Waste, Energy, Transport & Travel, and Biodiversity.
TU Dublin continues to engage with its local communities through key
events including Green Week, Climate Action Week, and Smarter Travel
initiatives.
09
TU Dublin is the first University in Ireland to embed sustainability
as a learning outcome in all academic programmes.
In
Making Societal Impact through
Community Gardening
spring 2023 the ‘GLAS at TU Dublin’
community garden officially opened at the
Blanchardstown Campus. This garden provides
a space for community groups, students, and
local schools to grow fresh produce, reconnect
with nature, and foster a stronger sense of
community through growing together. This
project is a collaborative effort between Fingal
County Council, Global Action Plan Ireland, TU
Dublin, and the local community.
Inspired by this successful model, a new
community garden pilot project at the
Grangegorman Campus took shape at the
end of 2023. The Grangegorman Community
Garden - a collaboration between TU Dublin,
The Grangegorman Development Agency,
D7 Educate Together National School, and
corporate partners - was established to restore
a purpose-designed, but recently neglected,
growing space. With funding support from
Workday and Hooke & MacDonald, this
group is working to develop a suite
of educational experiences around
sustainable horticulture and aims to develop
a sustainable collaborative governance
model for a community garden, co-created
and trialled by a multi-stakeholder group.
Towards a Sustainable Campus
In September 2023, the Department of Further and Higher
Education, Research, Innovation and Science awarded five higher
education institutions a combined €5.5 million in recognition of
their outstanding contribution to national strategic priorities and
policies. Performance funding of €1 million was awarded to TU
Dublin in recognition of the University’s major decarbonisation
initiatives: the District Heating System initiative at the Tallaght
Campus, and the deep-bore geothermal heating exploration
project in Grangegorman.
These projects are a first in the Irish market and act as a testbed
for other organisations as they plan their clean energy transitions.
They offer TU Dublin researchers the chance to study replicability
and allows students the opportunity to develop new urban
services, products, and skills as they prepare for engagement in
this emerging industry.
Intel Scholarship Awards
In January 2023, TU Dublin extended a warm welcome to Intel Ireland,
for their annual scholarship awarding ceremony. In its fifth year, the
event was a celebration of the seven recipients of the 2022/2023
TU Dublin Intel Scholarships, students of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science.
The event took place in the Intel Auditorium, the largest teaching space
in the heart of the Central Quad on the University’s City Campus. The
audience, made up of students, lecturers, Intel colleagues and proud
parents, were warmly welcomed by Neil Philip, Intel’s Vice-President
and Factory Manager and TU Dublin former President, Professor David
FitzPatrick.
In their opening remarks, Mr Philip and Professor FitzPatrick spoke
about the important strategic collaboration between TU Dublin and
Intel, which began in 2018. Working together, wide-ranging impact has
been achieved across the University, including the annual scholarship
programme.

16 Creating Opportunities
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the hard
work of many dedicated students is recognised
and celebrated, while new opportunities are
created.
Scholarships
Many of our scholarships not only provide vital
financial assistance, but also offer students
practical experience, and in some cases the
aid of an industry mentor, offering invaluable
support and guidance. Some of our students
have real challenges in engaging with full time
education, and their personal commitments
often impair their ability to focus on their
studies. Any support, but in particular financial
support, is enormously important and beneficial
to the students and can improve, in a very
fundamental way, the quality of their experience
in University and their ability to remain in higher
education.
Supporting Students in Challenging Situations
25
Over the years, thanks to your generosity, we have raised almost
€100,000 to support our students facing unexpected and extreme
financial challenges.
As you know, access to education changes lives and our students may
occasionally find themselves in difficult financial situations that creates
a barrier to their studies, ones which require immediate assistance.
If you would like to make a contribution to support
students in need, please click on the following link
https://www.tudublin.ie/connect/the-tu-dublinfoundation/ways-to-give/donate/
This fund helps students whose needs go beyond the aid available
elsewhere, providing direct support to those experiencing extreme
and immediate financial difficulty. It is open to the entire student body,
including our apprentices and international students, across all our
campuses.
The median gift awarded to a student in need is €500, depending on
their situation. This is sent directly to the student, often on the same
day they have let us know their need.
Thank you again for all you do to support our students. Your generosity
has ensured all our students have equal opportunity to reach their full
potential and has a truly profound impact.
Thank you to all those who contributed the fund.
Network
Going Beyond Learning
The TU Dublin Alumni Network is a thriving community that
connects graduates worldwide. As a dynamic hub, we provide
a platform for lifelong relationships, professional growth, and
collaboration. During 2023, our network offered a wealth of
resources and opportunites through many in-person events,
including graduations, careers fairs, events abroad and oncampus
reunions.
International Reunions
In May 2023, we were delighted to visit Chicago
and San Francisco to host graduates and guests
at reunions in both cities. Establishing a footprint
in the US is a strategic move to amplify the impact
and influence of TU Dublin’s alumni community.
The United States serves as a hub for innovation,
entrepreneurship, and diverse industries. By
creating a presence there, alumni can tap into a
vast network of professionals, potential mentors,
and job opportunities.
Following the events, interested alumni formed local
networks in Chicago and San Francisco, and now
meet regularly.
27
Leveraging visually appealing content, we embraced platforms
like Instagram Reels to engage our audience, fostering a vibrant
online community. Regular alumni spotlights and success
stories created a sense of pride and connection amongst
graduates.
‘I was delighted to be part of a very fun and informative evening.
It’s amazing what you and your team are doing with TU Dublin
and probably no better time to ignite the alumni base than
now! I look forward to hearing more around the plans to start
an Alumni chapter, and would be happy to be a part of its
development and growth. I believe we have a strong base
over here to feed off!’
Reunions
We were delighted to welcome graduates from
the course of Laboratory Science 1973 to our
Grangegorman Campus for a reunion in October 2023.
The reunion offered a unique opportunity for these
graduates to reconnect, reminisce about their time
spent working in laboratory science, and reflect on the
evolution of their respective careers. The group were
treated to a tour of the labs in our Central Quad by
Dr. Jan Guerin, (Head of Discipline in Biological Health
& Sports Sciences), Kathy Keogh, (School Operations
Lead), and Dr. Celine Herra, (Senior Lecturer of
Biological Health & Sports Sciences) followed by a
reception in St Laurence’s.
‘Personally and on behalf of the entire group we would
like to thank you all for the great welcome you gave
us. Everyone really enjoyed the tour, the Whatsapp
messages are coming in all morning!!
It is really nice for us to know that the future of medical
laboratory science is in such safe and enthusiastic
hands. Not to mention the facilities! Many of us came
along yesterday with a little trepidation as we had not
been together in so long - we need not have worried!
Again thank you both for looking after us so well it
was a wonderful day.’
Journalist explores how AI technology is
shaping our future
A new documentary screened by RTE gives Anne-Marie
Tomchak a platform to examine how AI’s increasing power
and influence impacts on our lives.
‘Game Changer: AI and You’, made in partnership with
Science Foundation Ireland and Science Week, sees
Anne-Marie taking a look at how artificial intelligence is
transforming the human experience.
Background: Anne-Marie Tomchak is a reporter and
presenter on BBC Trending. She brings an expert voice
and original journalism to the BBC’s social media coverage
on its domestic and international news outlets and social
platforms. In 2014 she was nominated for a Radio Academy
Award for Innovation after breaking a story about the
‘offer’ of illegal drugs on Instagram, which led to a
change in policy by the platform. She uses social media
to find, develop and break stories and applies traditional
journalistic practices and analytics tools to report on the
real stories behind the trends.
She made particular reference to Katie’s work on exposing
allegations of sexual assault of women in the Irish Defence
Forces in a special programme entitled Women of Honour
in 2021.
‘I am absolutely thrilled to be selected Kerry Person of
the Year. I have always been so proud of my Kerry roots.
I am humbled and honoured.’
