ANDREA KRUGER, MAY 2024 IN A WORLD OF INSTANT INFORMATION, WE CAN EASILY BECOME CONSUMED BY WHAT WE ARE INVOLVED IN OR WITH BUT WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE INFORMATION WE’RE CONSUMING SCROLL BY SCROLL? WHAT STICKS? AND WHAT AND WHO LEADS OR CAUSES US TO ACT? WHAT DO WE STAND UP FOR? WHERE DO WE SHOW UP? WHEN DO WE SPEAK UP? Say for example you read an article of a new bill the Government wants to pass. Do you do research on the proposed bill? Find out what the practical implications would be? Maybe start a petition? Or do you just know about it until you forget about it? In this scenario, do you stand up by signing a petition? Show up by protesting or speak up by joining conversations concerning the bill? Another example would be if you see a post on social media concerning the abduction of a child. Do you repost instantly, warning your social media circle? Do you start digging for more information to check the facts? And do you change your behaviour and/or movements in response? Again, the questions arise, stand up, show up or speak up? In a consumer and reaction driven society how can we utilise the vast information at hand not only to be consumers but to become active contributors, transforming information into weapons to fight the battles of today and tomorrow? Taking what we are learning and standing up for what is just, showing up for those who need us and speaking up against injustice. Across the world Intelligence Agencies make use of a cycle called the Intelligence cycle, transforming information into intelligence. These reports are part of the Government’s decisionmaking processes. Following the same cycle can lead to informed decision making enabling the correct action is taken to implement an appropriate solution. 20

STEP 01 1. PLANNING AND DIRECTION Say you hear or heard of a topic that is concerning to you. Stop for a moment, ask yourself. Do I plan to stand up, show up or speak up about this? Do I want to find out more? Or do I want to share it without any further knowledge about its validity? Answering yes to any of these questions leads you into what happens next. Forward, skip or start asking more questions. Should you want to find out more, start planning where you will find out more about the topic, who you can ask and what you can do. STEP 02 2. COLLECTION Start collecting the information. This can take on various forms e.g. reading up about laws, speaking to a professional or reading different articles about the same subject. Get to know the topic. WHAT DOES THIS CYCLE ENTAIL? 3. PROCESSING AND STEP EXPLOITATION 03 The amount of information you have gathered can be daunting. Little by little process the information by looking at similarities and differences. Highlight what stands out and what raises more questions. STEP 04 4. ANALYSIS AND PRODUCTION Consider the information gathered, is it reliable, valid, and relevant? Ask and answer who, what, where, why, when and how on every occasion. Continually answering these questions will lead you to produce intelligence from information. In a world of instant information, we can easily become consumed by what we are scrolling through. But what if we apply this cycle to our daily lives? Using information so STEP 5. DISSEMINATION AND 05 INTEGRATION Policy makers across the world make daily decisions based on intelligence reports compiled by analysts. Integrating it into policies and actions. Some of these decisions lead to more reporting requirements. Leading back to the planning step in the cycle. . widely available to make informed decisions whether the situation at hand requires us to stand up, show up or speak up, not to be consumed by the information but contribute to our families, communities and nation with it.
