1 Water the plant the day before so it is easy to remove from
the pot. Remove the plant from its pot, prune any dead roots
and remove the old bark, retaining a root ball of good size.
2 Look for old brown pseudobulbs and remove them. Don’t
remove any pseudobulbs that are still green. Remove any old
sheaths (dead bases of old leaves) or any old flower stems.
3 Choose a larger pot so there is sufficient room for two years’
growth – about 2.5–5 cm (1–2 in) larger in diameter should be
fine. Place a layer of bark at the bottom and stand the plant so
that the base of the new growth is level with the rim of the pot.
4 Hold the plant in the middle and add bark mix. Tap the pot
down to ensure that there are no gaps in the bark mix and repeat
until the pot is full. Water the plant immediately and thereafter
sparingly while the plant gets established in its new pot.
Potting on
This Cymbidium was due
for repotting as it was sitting
proud of the pot.
The root system is
very healthy and the
bark has not degraded
much, so it is potted
on to a larger pot as in
steps 3 and 4 above.
Phalaenopsis
Phalaenopsis, which originate from South-East
Asia, are the most popular orchids by far and
are what most people think of when orchids
are mentioned. They are very tolerant of a wide
range of conditions, their flowers come in a huge
variety of striking colours, and they will last for
months. They are the perfect houseplants!
Temperature
Phalaenopsis are warm-growing orchids
preferring a temperature range of 18–24°C
(64–75°F). Providing the right temperature
will not be a problem in an average house, but
unheated spare rooms or conservatories are not
really suitable for Phalaenopsis as they dislike large
temperature fluctuations.
Windowsills next to double-glazed windows
are the best place for them in winter, as cold
air coming off a single-glazed window can be a
24 Orchid care by type and species
problem. If your Phalaenopsis is on a windowsill
with curtains that separate it from the warmth of
the room when they are closed at night, move the
plant on to a table near the window.
Light
Phalaenopsis will be damaged by full sun in the
summer but will thrive in a sunny position in
winter. South-facing windowsills are ideal in
winter, but from early spring, move them out
of direct sunlight either by using some kind of
shading or by moving them to a north-, east- or
west-facing windowsill. In the middle of the
summer, when the sun is at its strongest, it is
possible that even the direct light on an eastfacing
windowsill would be too much.
A large, bright, north-facing window with
no blinds or curtains and no trees shading it is a
good place for a Phalaenopsis in summer.
Jen Sievers art adorns
thousands of homes around
the world. Her style is
contemporary and always
infused with her positive
energy. She uses acrylic
paints with fresh colours
and sweeping lines.
Much is an inspirational guide to maximalist decor, that
encourages the reader to tap into their inner-creative.
Artist, designer and interior stylist Evie Kemp has found
increasingly over the years that people want to create a
home they love, but are frozen and at times intimidated
by rules and trends.
Evie’s opinion is that all homes should tell a story, and
Much reminds us of the stories we all have to tell.
Alongside an abundance of self-discovery is practical
advice for how to create a layered and maximalist home
in your own space. From installing a fool-proof gallery
wall, to tips for sourcing second-hand, a masterclass on
pattern mixing, room layout and more.
Much is not a ‘how-to’ guide for a prescriptive style,
instead it’s filled to the brim with Evie’s own take on
maximalism, illustrating her way of helping you discover
your own unique style to create a home that is entirely
for you.
76 ASPARAGACEAE–ARECACEAE
regular; stamens 6; ovary superior or inferior and 3-parted. Fruit a splitting capsule; seeds
numerous. Native to the Americas.
Agave americana pitera, century plant A very large and imposing succulent 6–8 m during
flowering; plants take at least 10 years to flower, after which they die, but perennate by offsets.
Leaves very large and succulent, to 2 m long and 15–22(30) cm wide, with a stout black spine at
the tip 30–50 mm long; blue-green or variegated with yellow stripes. Flowers borne in summer
on a tree-like inflorescence that persists for years, greenish-yellow, to 90 mm long, borne on at
least ½ the length of the inflorescence scape. Fruit an oblong capsule. Common, particularly
near developed areas; cliffs and roadsides. L, F, C, T, G, H, P. A. sisalana sisal has straight, rigid
leaves that are much narrower, 5–11 cm wide, which when mature are spineless along the margins;
terminal spine 15–25 mm long. Flowers blue-green, and mixed with leafy bulbils which detach and
form new plants. L, F, C, T, G, H, P. A. fourcroydes henequén is similar to both the above species but
with a distinct basal trunk 50 cm–1(2) m (not stemless). Planted and naturalised. L, F, C, T, G, H, P.
40 TREASURED TREES
41 TREASURED TREES
DR. MAX COLEMAN
ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS, EDINBURGH
Scotland’s
mountain elm
Driving south along the A9 past Inverness my eye is
caught by the bleached skeleton of a dead tree. Its
distinctive shape and branching pattern are that of
an elm and the presence of smaller twigs indicate it
has died recently. Paying as much attention to the
roadside trees as I can without becoming a danger
to other drivers, I start to see more dead elms.
