New Indigenous Gathering Space
Overlooking the rugged beauty of the West Arm of Kootenay
Lake, the community came together to officially open
the Tenth Street Indigenous Gathering Space that will support
transformative learning and reconnection.
In a ceremony on Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus that
included representatives from Indigenous Nation partners,
Selkirk College students and staff, the City of Nelson, School
District #8 and Kootenay Kids, more than 80 people gathered
to celebrate through drumming, dancing, speeches, food and
strengthened connections. Constructed of timber and tin, the
strikingly impressive space features a central fire pit to accommodate
sacred fires for ceremonial and healing practices.
“Completing the opening of the Indigenous Gathering Space
is full circle to me and those who helped with the project proposal,
the building of this beautiful structure and awakening
the space,” said Dianne Biin, the college’s Director of Indigenous
Education & Engagement. “The voices, songs and dances
shared in the space are healing and demonstrate reconciliation
through authentic partnerships.”
The new space has been in the works since November 2021
and reflects the dynamic partnership between the City of Nelson,
Selkirk College and regional Indigenous Nations. Made
possible through Heritage BC’s 150 Time Immemorial Grant
program that is administered by the First Peoples’ Cultural
Foundation, the $220,000 project began construction last
summer.
An intimate awakening ceremony took place on winter
solstice to bless and honour the space. The mid-June official
opening was a way to recognize those who helped make the
arbour a reality and those who will use the sacred space going
forward.
“We stand on this land to celebrate this splendid structure
which will serve as a cultural gathering and ceremonial space,
acting as a central focus for community events, celebrations,
performances and learning related to Indigenous history, education,
truth, justice and reconciliation,” said City of Nelson
Mayor Janice Morrison at the opening. “The Indigenous Gathering
Space is a place for healing, celebration, learning and
connecting to place, promoting intergenerational transfer of
knowledge, skills and stories, and strengthening community
dialogue and cross-cultural understanding.”
A key element of the Tenth Street Indigenous Gathering
Space is fire, which is regarded as a living spirit and sacred gift.
Firekeeper Melissa Dorey—who is a Selkirk College instructor
and Indigenous Projects Lead—explained that fire pit is a
place to go for guidance, healing and wisdom. The space is a
place to pray, call in ancestors and helpers, gather, share and
give thanks.
Operated by Selkirk College, the Tenth Street Indigenous
Gathering Space will be available for ceremony, community
events, celebrations, performances and learning related to
Indigenous history, education, truth, justice and reconciliation.
Prior to booking, users will be oriented on respectful use
of the space, including teaching on the role and responsibility
of the Firekeeper.
“This is more than just a structure—it’s a symbol of partnership,
reciprocity and a shared commitment to reconciliation,”
said Selkirk College President Maggie Matear. “It’s a way for
us to honour and learn from the ways and knowing and being
of Indigenous peoples who have stewarded these lands since
time immemorial. And it’s a legacy that will remain for generations
to come.”
Nelson Pride
Nelson Pride Board
The volunteer board of Nelson Pride
has started work on this year’s events
that will be taking place starting August
26th and culminating with the Pride
Parade on Sunday, September 4th. This
has been the first full year of incorporation
for the Nelson Pride board and
they feel encouraged by the feedback
they have received. The board is always
looking for individuals who would be
interested in joining the board. If this
is you, please reach out to info@nelsonpride.ca.
Nelson Pride is excited to be organizing
a Monthly Queer Games Night, in
collaboration with local 2SLGBTQ ally,
the Nelson United Church. Everyone
age 14 and older is welcome to come
join us to play games
and meet new friends
on the first Friday of
every month from
6 to 9pm! They plan
to have both video
games and regular
tabletop games available,
but attendees
are welcome to bring
their own easy-tolearn
tabletop favourites
to share.
project to ensure it truly represents the
history and tells the complete story
of the queer experience in this area. If
you have questions about the archive
or something you want to share, please
email archive@nelsonpride.ca.
The board is excited to share some
great events for the upcoming Pride
celebration with the community. We
will be hosting events like Flag Raising,
Drag Brunch, Welcome BBQ and more.
If you are interested in helping with any
of these events or have an event you
wish to host for Nelson Pride, contact
Words and Wilderness
Shuswap author Deanna Barnhardt
Kawatski has a remarkable number of
published books under her belt. Her
nine books vary in genre from fiction
to memoir to children’s books to travel
writing, but a theme that rises often
through her work is an intentional
respect for the
land. All are
invited to the
Nelson Public
Library on
Wednesday, July
17th, 7pm to
hear the author
read from an
assortment of her
books around the
theme of love of
nature. Included
will be her newest
book called
My Life is in Your Hand, a historical
novel based on the life of her greatgrandmother
who made her way from
Norway to the Shuswap in the 1800s.
The author’s intense experiences
tree-planting during the 1970s, and
then working as a forestry lookout
attendant in Northern BC, and finally
raising a family in the northern wilderness
for fourteen years, has given her a
unique perspective on land. This perspective
informs her work and helps her
make connections between living on the
land and her concerns around climate
change. Barnhardt Kawatski reflects on
the hope she still has despite the challenge
we face: “What I have done consistently
is honour nature and I think
our great failure, which has led to the
climate crisis, is not doing that as a society.
I’d like to think it isn’t too late and
awareness and respect for the natural
world has certainly grown.”
July 18-21
Thursday 7:30 pm • Man made in God’s image
Saturday 7:30 pm • Man’s need of a Saviour
sponsored by
Lunch provided, all are welcome!
Sunday 7:30 pm • Man’s triumph in death
Hosted by Castlegar Mennonite Church
at Tarry’s Hall, 1986 Hwy 3A Castlegar
EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
Magnus is an energetic Coonhound who loves nothing
more than a good romp in the yard or a gopher to chase.
He is picky with other dogs, and prefers two legged
company. Magnus is a smart-cookie – give him the hardest
puzzles and you’ll be amazed at how quickly he will
solve them.
Magnus is seeking a home where his bark & exuberance
will be appreciated and celebrated. He will shine with his
very own fenced yard or acreage. He thrives on mental
and physical stimulation, so puzzle toys, interactive
games, and plenty of playtime will keep him happy and
engaged. If interested please contact us right away!
the numbers 1 through 9
must fill each row, column
Reviving the Columbia
Nestled in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, the
Columbia River, once hailed as the greatest salmon-producing
river in the world, hasn’t seen a significant
spawn in its upper portion for 85 years. However,
Indigenous-led salmon restoration efforts are currently
underway to try to change that.
Since the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in
1939, salmon have been blocked from returning to the
Canadian portion of the upper Columbia River. Despite
this, Indigenous Nations have remained committed to
the goal of salmon reintroduction. Five years ago, Bringing
the Salmon Home: the Columbia River Salmon
Reintroduction Initiative was launched. This initiative,
led by the Syilx Okanagan Nation, Secwépemc Nation
and Ktunaxa Nation, is in partnership with the Government
of Canada and the Province of British Columbia,
with support from Columbia Basin Trust. The initiative
aims to reintroduce salmon to Indigenous food, social
and ceremonial needs, as well as to benefit the region’s
residents and ecosystems.
Combining Indigenous knowledge, Western science
and cultural engagement, the initiative aims to reintroduce
salmon to the Canadian portion of the Columbia
River, a significant goal as nearly 40 per cent of the river’s
main stem originates in southeastern BC. Ongoing
efforts include ceremonial salmon fry releases and technical
studies. Learn more at columbiariversalmon.ca.
